Bowling for a good cause

Fernando, a loyal reader from San Juan, sent us this photo of Bernie Williams, Tino Martinez, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada with golf legend Chi Chi Rodriguez. Fernando’s friend Ana María Abruña Reyes snapped the photo.

The Ring Boys were in town for a charity bowling tournament hosted by Jorge and Laura Posada. Fernando said that Miggy Cairo, Joba Chamberlain (he’s everywhere!) and Jose Molina were also in the house along with the former Miss Universe, Denise Quiñones.

(Miss Universe? We pause here to say, “Way to go, Derek”)

Fernando tells me we have a lot of readers from Puerto Rico and that they are good fans. I’ve been there several times and the baseball culture is great. Thanks for the e-mail, Fernando.

    World Series #27? ‘08!

3 players in the article above will be huge this season: Jeter, Posada, Joba.

    Anyone else pumped?

  2. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers!

    I’m pumped.

  3. from Captain Clutch to Derek Choker

bernie looks fat! ahahha so much for “baseball shape”

  4. McLovin

Wonder if Pettitte played if he would be tested for HGH or does bowling have a loose testing program.

The ever brilliant Steve Goldman offered his 2 cents (as opposed to 50 cent, as opposed to the congress referred Mr. Half Dollar) on the congressional hearing:
    http://www.yesnetwork.com/news.....amp;vkey=5

“Do we have evidence that any of these drugs do anything to alter the game?” The Commissioner’s answer boiled down to “Yes” without offering any of that evidence. A discussion of the placebo effect ensued, which is to say that even if your attempt at cheating has no physiological effect, if you feel like cheating you are cheating. If only other areas of human endeavor were equally vulnerable to the placebo effect. If you feel you deserve a raise, you will get a raise. If you are convinced that girl is buying your line, she is buying your line. If you want to lose weight, have a Big Mac and make believe it was Ex-Lax. And don’t forget to applaud if you believe in fairies.

Donald Fehr also said spoke the unspeakable, wondering if therapeutic doses of HGH might be medically beneficial. He said he didn’t know, and that his thinking aloud didn’t represent the Union’s position, but even so, he raised a very significant point: if HGH isn’t a performance enhancer, why isn’t it regulated instead of banned? And if its primary purpose is indeed healing, how is it different than any other medical therapy a player would use to get off the disabled list, from band-aids to cortisone shots to arm surgery?

Thank you so much for the picture with my favorite (former) Yankee – Bernie Williams!

As I was wondering who the gentleman pictures with them was and then discovered it was Chi Chi Rodriguez, I couldn’t help but chuckle because I remembered how Less Nessman on WKRP pronounced his name: Chai-Chai Rod-rah-gheez.

Any of my fellow 70s/80s children should remember that one :-)

Jeter looks kinda scrawny (as least compared to the other non-golfers). Time to hit the gym with ARod and have some sleepovers.

  8. Derek "The GIDP Machine" Jeter

What does that say on GIDP Machine’s t-shirt?

  9. Joe Buck ruins my life with his bad MLB/NFL playoff announcing

    Yes! A Tino sighting.

  10. Noname

TINO!! One of my favorite ex-Mariners… :)

Rick Reilly tells a great Derek Jeter/Miss Universe story in his book, Hate Mail From Cheerleaders.

Jeter had a huge pile of fan mail in front of his locker and Reilly asks him if he can go through some. Jeter agreed and one he opened was a letter and a picture from a Miss Universe. He was excited to show it to Jeter and amused that Jeter’s response was that he wasn’t going down the Miss Universe road again. Reilly said that’s not a phrase he thought he’d ever hear a guy say again.

Jeter could use some gym time with A-Rod. That t-shirt is falling off him.

  14. Bronxie Brenda

Tino will be in spring training this year as a guest instructor and hopefully one day on the coaching lines. There’s nothing not to like about Tino. Class guy.

  15. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers!

    *sighs and mopes*

This grad school application stuff…totally not fun.

  16. Clay Bellinger

Thank god Tino is off Baseball Tonight.

  17. murphydog

Jeter won’t benefit from bulking up. He needs all the quickness he can find. If he’s still the guy I think he is, he has made damn sure he’s in shape for 2008.

  18. murphydog

“Thank god Tino is off Baseball Tonight.”

Well, he’s no Michael Kay. (How ironic).

  19. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

Grad school. :wow: I stopped once I got my bachelor’s degree in business management.

  20. mel

A lighter frame will help Jeter’s knees. And his swing. And baserunning. And staying out of double plays. He’s tired of hearing about GIDPs here.

  21. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

He looks more muscular in the chest.

  22. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers!

Jennifer: I don’t have much of a choice; it’s nearly impossible to get a decent teaching job at the high school level without a masters, and it IS impossible to get a teaching job at the PhD level without a masters

  23. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers!

I’m sorry I meant the university level without a PhD

  24. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

Really you need a masters to get a teaching job at a high school level. Wow, I guess times have changed.

  25. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

This is the first time Tino is returning to coach right? Maybe he can give Eric Duncan some pointers. I’m really hoping he’ll finally get it together and be the player everyone thought he’d be. If I recall correctly he started to get it together at the end of last season. His previous seasons were hampered by injuries. I know one season he was drilled in the head, I wouldn’t be shocked if that threw him off.

  26. Buddy Biancalana

My wife’s colleague is in the middle of her 2nd Masters.

  27. Angel

I think Jeter looks fine. I’m not one to go “gaga” over him, but he looks in pretty damn good shape to me.

  28. Buddy Biancalana

    Jennifer-

Did you find out if Yahoo can handle a 32 team league?

  29. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

    No I will check now.

  30. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers!

Jennifer: Yeah, it’s incredible. I’d be okay if I wanted to teach math or science because there’s always a shortage, but I like history…

  31. Yanksrule57

    Rebecca,

If I can get into Grad school after a 20 year break (started last week) you can absolutely do it.

All my Prof’s are PHD’s which kind of surprised me really, but where I go (UNF) is a pretty big school.

  32. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

I just looked on Yahoo and I can’t find the information. Also I just realized when I played in last year we did baseball plus. Does anyone know if baseball plus is free?

  33. Buddy Biancalana

    Rebecca-

Make sure to include a video presentation of your sword skills with your grad school application, that will help your chances immensely.

  34. Buddy Biancalana

You have to pay for baseball plus

  35. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

Ah, I guess the guy who set it up paid for it than.

  36. Old Goat

I don’t see where Jeter has to go work out. His strength is fine. I think some of his fielding problems are more due to his knee than his being bulked up.

  37. ken777

    Rebecca
History! That was my masters, back in ‘60 Uni Nebr. Football full ride. But I wasted mine, I went into the army rangers and VN in ‘62…40 some years later. I get to travel around and see all the players we have been talking about. Good life. Good luck on your masters.

  38. dadofjft

Christine, I can’t see Chi Chi’s name without thinking of WKRP. That show holds a warm spot in my heart, if only for that bit and the Thanksgiving turkey drop. “As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.”

  39. Christine

    dadofjft

I think the “Turkeys” episode of WKRP is one of my most favorite too. That and the one where Venus and Andy are playing games and Andy steals Venus’ chair and then Mrs. Carlson comes in. And the one where Venus and Johnny are taking the breathalyzer and the more Johnny drinks, the better his reflexes get.

There were so many good ones, but Less’ news reports took the cake. :-)

  40. YanksAngel

Jorge has some more pics on his website. A couple of Joba are on there!!
