Arizona? Let’s play it at the Yale Bowl

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jan 20, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Admit it, none of you Giants fans thought Lawrence Tynes was going to hit that one after missing the previous two.

Good for the G-Men and Eli Manning, who finally escapes the shadow of his big brother. Amazing that Brett Favre could play so poorly. Their offense was brutal.

Prepare yourself for two weeks of non-stop hype. The unbeaten Mighty Patriots against the plucky Giants. The undefeated team on the verge of history against what would be one of the NFL’s most unlikely champions. New York vs. Boston. Two Bill Parcells guys as the coaches.

No prediction yet. But suffice it to say I won’t be picking the Giants for the third week in a row.

The giants in the super bowl i dont bleieve it yet man… and no i didnt think tynes had a shot in hell of making that field goal.

  2. Ryan January 20th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

you’re absolutely right Pete, i didnt even think Tynes was gonna reach the endzone with that last kick

    amazing

    see you in Arizona

  3. YANKEE BIAS January 20th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Who would’ve thought the G-Men would be in the Super Bowl at the beginning of the season.

    Unreal.

Eli Manning was fantastic today. I hope they kick the Patriots you know what.

  4. Go NYR January 20th, 2008 at 10:25 pm

The Patsies are gonna lose. I have a feeling. Could just be the Jets fan in me talking, but the Giants nearly beat the Patsies in week 17. They played like garbage today and Brady threw 3 picks. If he throws 3 picks in the Superbowl, the Patsies will not win.

  5. Jeff NJ January 20th, 2008 at 10:25 pm

Pete, can I get a shout out for my prediction on your football post a few days ago? I predicted 24-20, I missed by one point! I’m glad I put that down in writing. Amazing that we’ll get a rematch with the Patriots!

  6. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! January 20th, 2008 at 10:26 pm

Pete, are you gonna live blog the Super Bowl?

  7. Go NYR January 20th, 2008 at 10:26 pm

Tynes’ approach for that kick- kick it as hard as I can and pray

  8. tterba January 20th, 2008 at 10:26 pm

go giants ! please beat the pats for us yankee fans

  9. Jeff NJ January 20th, 2008 at 10:28 pm

By the way, I think it worked out great that the Giants got New England in week 17. The Giants had no choice but to play that game hard. They did and they built momentum from it. Amazing story. I’m going to enjoy the next two weeeks immensely.

  10. Lori January 20th, 2008 at 10:28 pm

Pete – you have to admit, Brady hasn’t looked good this entire playoffs. That they made it to the big game is amazing to me. Ok, so it is AMAZING to me that the G-Men are there as well. But Manning looked good. Let’s see, 3 INT vs. 0 INT. Who has the momentum?? Go ahead, pick NE as the favorites. I’m going with Manning. ELI Manning.

  11. Norm Snead January 20th, 2008 at 10:29 pm

I swear to you Pete I saw the Cowboys beat the Giants at the Yale Bowl 23-10 November 23rd 1973. I was 9 years old.

  12. B'H January 20th, 2008 at 10:29 pm

I believed he could do that kick. You know third times the charm. Now in two weeks. That’s gonna be great.

  13. Global Warming January 20th, 2008 at 10:32 pm

I would love to see Shady Brady and Bill Belicheat lose to Eli and the Giants.

    Pleaaase!!

  14. JRVJ January 20th, 2008 at 10:34 pm

I don’t follow the NFL, so the best thing I can say about this result is that it will keep the NY press busy and away from steroids stories.

  15. Peter Abraham January 20th, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Enjoy it, Giants fans. But two things: The Pats played a totally vanilla base defense against the Giants in that final game of the regular season and sat out two starting linemen on offense: Kaczur and Neal. And Brady is not going to play two bad games in a row. Belichick havingt two weeks to prepare for the Giants is a big advantage.

But that’s for two weeks from now. Enjoy your win, it was a great one.

As for me, these next two weeks will be like vacation. No baseball stories needed.

  16. B'H January 20th, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Last week we won thanks to an interception. This week we won thanks to another interception. The way Brady’s been playing there might be an interception or two to catch at the superbowl. B’H Giants Win

  17. dontfirecash January 20th, 2008 at 10:37 pm

    Lori,
Did you see Brady’s game against jacksonville? 26-28 isn’t good?

  18. Rob NY January 20th, 2008 at 10:37 pm

This is the road to redemption:
Lose to Dallas bad twice, come back and beat them when it counts; Check
Lose to Green Bay in the regular season bad, come back and beat them when it counts: Check
Lose to the Pats in what was the best played game for the G-Men of the year and come back to take their undefeated season: TBD

  19. Bronx Liaison January 20th, 2008 at 10:39 pm

The Giants deserved to win that ball game. I was rooting on the Packers due to family from Wisconsin, but there is no downplaying how well Eli Manning performed tonight. Completely outplayed Favre and a strong, young defense.

Hopefully the next game will be a good one.

  20. Rob NY January 20th, 2008 at 10:40 pm

Let’s talk about how big Plax came up today…. if thats the Burress we get in 2 weeks than we have a real good shot.

  21. B'H January 20th, 2008 at 10:41 pm

Pete, saying that Brady won’t have two bad games isn’t a sure thing. The Giants proved themselves to be great underdogs and have a chance to prove it again. Two weeks? Does Brady want a vacation? We saw how good that did for Romo.

  22. mel January 20th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

    B’H,

    What is B’H?

The early line: Patriots favored by 13.5 points.

  35. Marc from Portland Maine January 20th, 2008 at 10:56 pm

    Pete,

I’m from NY but I was always a Packer fan since my dad was from Green Bay. I’m a giants fan next and am glad to see one of my 2 teams will be there to kick the a** of your very overhyped NE team. I’m just sorry it won’r be Brett.

  36. JDnotDrew January 20th, 2008 at 10:57 pm

“Third Tynes a charm”-Love it!! Go G-men. Sorry no perfect season Pete, book it.

  37. England Jones January 20th, 2008 at 11:01 pm

The other really cold games had names The Ice Bowl, The Freezer Bowl, This one should be called The Chill Bowl. Now lets Chill Giants and beat the pats in the superbowl

  38. Rusty January 20th, 2008 at 11:02 pm

2 weeks time, one way or another; gonna get mad ugly on this blog son.

  39. #9 January 20th, 2008 at 11:02 pm

Who would have thought the way the Giants started this season that they would play in the big game.

Wonder how much video Belichick has on the Jints?

  40. Scott Proctor's Arm January 20th, 2008 at 11:03 pm

  42. Jonathan Everett January 20th, 2008 at 11:09 pm

    OH YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Let’s go Giants!!!!

  43. Mark January 20th, 2008 at 11:10 pm

I pick the Giants to upset the Packers. I had a Packer fan in my vicinity and he talke nothin but trash. We let him have it when the game was over and the Giants were victory. I had little faith in Tynes after missing two in a row. GGOO G-MEN.

  44. PAT M. January 20th, 2008 at 11:11 pm

Saw Joe Willie Namath beat the G-Men at the Yale Bowl……Namath boot-legged for a 3 yard TD ….It was the first meeting for both teams….Fran Tark was the QB for the Giants…..In was only a Pre-season game but it was the talk of the town back then……

  45. England Jones January 20th, 2008 at 11:11 pm

Detroit free press used your line THIRD TYNES THE CHARM. Nice. Superbowl 2008 champions GIANTS.

  46. Joba the Great January 20th, 2008 at 11:13 pm

Do the Giants get to wear the home blues against the Pats?

  47. Kevin January 20th, 2008 at 11:16 pm

I love how there is a giants blog on this site and there’s more posts and comments about the game on here. lol

  48. i miss bernie January 20th, 2008 at 11:18 pm

im hoping they wear the white but they beat dallas last week wearing the blue.

  49. Joba the Great January 20th, 2008 at 11:20 pm

Just looked it up: the Pats are the designated home team, so the Giants will be wearing the road whites, which is probably for the best.

  50. i miss bernie January 20th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

that farve-eli hug at the end…
did he pass him a torch?

  51. i miss bernie January 20th, 2008 at 11:23 pm

home team gets to choose thier solid or whites.
    NE could choose either.

  52. Lori January 20th, 2008 at 11:23 pm

    Yes – another road game!

  53. Bob January 20th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

OK, so what is Hank gonna say during the next 2 weeks to try and steal the spotlight from the Giants? lol

  54. i miss bernie January 20th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

used to be home team wore solid and whites were traveling unis….
but the cowgirls wanted to wear thier white at home and messed it up for everyone

  55. gianthinker January 20th, 2008 at 11:27 pm

I’m a huge Giants fan and I have to say I’m thrilled and in awe. I did have faith in Tynes on that last one because I figured he couldnt miss them all. Otherwise you’re right Peter I had no faith in him.

  56. Ginsengsully January 20th, 2008 at 11:27 pm

    Peter,

Great blog might I say! Huge Giant fan, and have a few friends who root for the other team.

This is a great day! No matter the outcome, I am going to enjoy these two weeks like none other!

    Go GMEN!

    Lets Go GIANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so the G-men will be playing like 12 days before P&C’s…nice!

  58. i miss bernie January 20th, 2008 at 11:32 pm

  59. i miss bernie January 20th, 2008 at 11:33 pm

mike francessa has been saying all year that tynes was gonna cost them a game, he was almost right but the giants play on!

  61. ansky January 20th, 2008 at 11:42 pm

“I won’t be picking the Giants for the third week in a row.”

Fine by me, David is going to curb-stomp Goliath

  62. Yazman January 20th, 2008 at 11:43 pm

One of the best conference championship games ever! Giants showed amazing heart.

Arguably, the Giants had a much tougher road to the Super Bowl tnan NE (in Dallas and GB vs. NE’s home games against Jac and San Diego sans LT).

Very hard to pick against the 18-0 Patriots, but I predict the Giants play them even tougher than last time.

  63. JDnotDrew January 20th, 2008 at 11:44 pm

Patriots might have be going for dynasty but Eli will be going for Legacy. Long live the Mannings!

  64. i miss bernie January 20th, 2008 at 11:46 pm

pats better bring thier A game!

  65. JDnotDrew January 20th, 2008 at 11:47 pm

    woops

  68. JDnotDrew January 20th, 2008 at 11:50 pm

Just kiddin Pete and may the best team win.

  69. Scooter January 20th, 2008 at 11:52 pm

All I know – I yelled a LOT during the game.

    The most yelling?
    - Bradshaw’s amazing TD run called back on a questionable hold
    - McQuarters carrying the ball like a loaf of bread on the interception AND the punt return
    - Coughlin opting not to run a few plays at the end of regulation to get Tynes closer
    - Coughlin sending Tynes out for the 47-yarder.

Honestly I couldn’t believe he didn’t go for it on 4th and 7. No way I thought Tynes would kick it through

Wellington Mara and Bob Tisch are smiling down on the Giants right now

  70. Peter Abraham January 20th, 2008 at 11:54 pm

curb stomp? classy. just relax, it’s a game

  71. Marc YF January 21st, 2008 at 12:17 am

    Pete,

Please tell us all what we all want to know. Are you a Yankee fan, or a Red sux fan.

    Enquiring minds want to know.

  72. Eric Haskell January 21st, 2008 at 12:21 am

B’H – Your name is also German for “bra.”
Just thought you’d like to know ;)

  73. Peter T January 21st, 2008 at 12:23 am

How come the “Mighty Patriots” get a capital “M” and the “plucky Giants” get a lowercase “P”? Clearly, this is bulletin board material for the Giants!

  74. Buddy Biancalana January 21st, 2008 at 12:24 am

    Pete,

Please tell us all what we all want to know. Are you a Yankee fan, or a Red sux fan.

  75. Peter Abraham January 21st, 2008 at 12:25 am

Marc: I covered my first MLB baseball game when I was 18. I learned that day that it’s best to root for individuals and not teams.

So I’m not a fan of the Yankees or Red Sox or any other MLB team. I can say I’m a fan of Cliff Floyd, Ty Wigginton, Jose Reyes, Chien-Ming Wang, Mike Lowell, Tony Clark, Tom Glavine, Joe McEwing, Gary Sheffield, Mike Mussina, Johnny Damon and other guys who I was fortunate enough to get to know over the years.

I root for quick games and something good to write about. I’d like to see the Yankees do well because I don’t want to cover a bad team. I want to write about big games.

I am a Patriots fan and have been since I was a kid because my dad has season tickets. I root for the UMass football team and I’ve always like North Carolina basketball.

  76. Eli Manning January 21st, 2008 at 12:28 am

HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW TIKI!!!!!!!!

  77. Thrillington January 21st, 2008 at 12:34 am

    Alright Giants!

If they lose in two weeks, do you think the tabloids will blame A-Rod?

  78. B'H January 21st, 2008 at 12:39 am

Nice players to be a fan of Pete. So I guess you’re not a fan of Pettitte (or maybe you stopped after he admitted). Are you a fan of Joba, Cano, or other present or former yankees you have not mentioned?

  79. Peter Abraham January 21st, 2008 at 12:47 am

B’H: I didn’t say I wasn’t a fan of anybody. Those are just some guys I’ve gotten to know well over the years, better than others. I like Andy just fine. Just never had occasion to have lunch or dinner with him or to hang out. That’s all.

  80. jk January 21st, 2008 at 12:50 am

    Three Tynes a Charm!

  81. jk January 21st, 2008 at 12:51 am

    Take the Giants and 13.5.

The Pats have not covered the spread the last 4-5 games.

  82. Marc YF January 21st, 2008 at 12:53 am

    Thanks Pete,

I know you have to be objective in the game. You are doing great job in that way.

  83. Nick in SF January 21st, 2008 at 1:00 am

What a great game! Not only a great win, but another great COVER, if you know what I mean and I think you do.

Super Bowl should be a win-win: either the Giants pull off the upset for the ages or the dinosaurs from the ’72 Dolphins finally have to shut up. I can’t wait.

  84. i miss bernie January 21st, 2008 at 1:01 am

i have to say the Super Bowl is often disappointing but Championship Sunday never lets you down! that was a GREAT game!

  85. jimmy1138 January 21st, 2008 at 3:27 am

Lession learned yesterday: the rushing game won both games.
The Giants took Ryan Grant out of the game and Favre couldn’t do it alone (actually he reverted back to his old errors).
Congratulations from a Packers fan. Giants deserved to win.

  86. Chuck January 21st, 2008 at 4:17 am

    Giants win 31-28. No brainer.

  87. Kj January 21st, 2008 at 5:30 am

G-MEN!!!!!!! I was brought to tears by this win

  88. David Pinto January 21st, 2008 at 8:59 am

A super Yale Bowl would be cool. I’ve been on the field there with 80,000 people in the stands (I was in the Harvard Band) and it’s the most amazing feeling. You feel like you’re floating in a sea of people.

  89. NYPD113th January 21st, 2008 at 9:03 am

Remember ladies, it’s the 21 century, a place where NY teams do not win championships.

Congrats on being the bridesmaids again. ;)

  90. pat January 21st, 2008 at 9:26 am

Boston started the 20th century preyty well too. How did that one work out for you? Can you say 86 year drought.

  91. NYPD113th January 21st, 2008 at 9:33 am

“Boston started the 20th century preyty well too. How did that one work out for you? Can you say 86 year drought.”

A brief look at Boston v. NY/NJ right now:

    Sox > Yank$* & Mets
    Pats > Giants & Jets
    Celts > Knicks & Nets
    Bruins > Isles & Rangers

  92. pat January 21st, 2008 at 10:46 am

    NYPD
It is a great time to be a fan of the Boston teams. But the great thing about sports is that you play the games and sometimes the improbable happens. The 2004 Sox should have taught you that.

Sox friends tell me that Boston fans are tired of being the middle child in sports. For them the underdog role is pretty hard to take but….sometimes the front runner role is even harder to handle.

The Giants are relishing the underdog role. The Yankees seemed to embrace it pretty well the 2nd half of last season too. Not a close watcher of pro basketball or hockey so I wouldn’t attempt to discuss them.

Should be a fun SuperBowl and I look forward to the 2008 baseball season.

  93. Don Vito January 21st, 2008 at 11:50 am

DUDE….How can you call yourself a Yankees Fan and root for the favorite Football team of all BoStinx fans ? The NEW YORK Giants are playing the New England ( or more aptly the BOSTON ) Patriots and you’re loyalty is with the PattyCakes ? Do you root for the Celtics instead of the Knicks, too ? No question, your Yankees Blog is the best on the planet….but as most Yankees Fans are NEW YORK fans….I’ll bet I am not the only one who wants to see YOUR PATRIOTS fall on their faces in the Super Bowl…..over and OUT !

  94. Vince January 21st, 2008 at 12:55 pm

The Bruins are 3 points better than the Rangers, get real. Oh and wow, you are in the superbowl as opposed to the superbowl and the Yankees are 14 time playoff contenders (consecutively) Boston teams are performing better on the whole but don’t even pretend there is a dominance factor there. Besides, if the Giants somehow pull this one out, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the cities start to flip flop (minus the Knicks) in the next 1-3 years.

  95. Jeff NJ January 21st, 2008 at 12:57 pm

If the Giants can sum how harness all their strength and win the game over the previously undefeated Patriots. It will be the biggest NY over NE win in history. Bigger than Bucky in ’78, bigger than Boone in ’03. Probably equivalent to the Sox winning in ’04. It would just be outstanding. These next two weeks rule, let’s enjoy them.

  96. Big Three 08 January 21st, 2008 at 1:08 pm

    NYPD:

I’ll give you the fact that the Celts are better than NY basketball teams and the bruins are probably better than NY hockey teams(actually I don’t follow or care about hockey). But before you start putting astericks next to NY teams, you should really evaluate the moves and actions of your own Boston teams. Yes, the Patrios thus far have been the best football team, likely ever, but don’t forget that if anyone on that list deserves an asterik, it is the team that was caught cheating by its own league.

But seriously, please do not play that yankees spend all the money, but we are the poor underdog redsox who don’t have any money to spend card. In two years the red sox will have a higher payroll than the yankees. They have been increasing their payroll each year, while the yankees have at least made an effort to reduce theirs. Even if the yankees spent alot this offseason, they resigned their own guys (3 of whom started in their farm system). Congratulations on winning the series, but once the red sox decided to start throwing $50 million around on posting fees and paying average outfielders $14M + to opt out of their contracts, the we are poor card just doesn’t work anymore.

  97. Spyder January 21st, 2008 at 2:49 pm

This guy amazes me, a New York Blog with our team the Giants in the Super Bowl and he give us this Boston Patriot smack.

I hope the Giants make believers of another team that they only lost to by three points and could have won easily.

I don’t think the Pats are mighty, they have just gotten by in a few games.

I’d have to say the Giants are pretty mighty to for winning 10 games on the road, setting a new NFL record, and getting there with a 4th year QB. They are after all PETE one of the two last teams standing.

  98. t. barber January 21st, 2008 at 3:16 pm

eli and the g-men will get waxed in 2 weeks!

  99. TC January 22nd, 2008 at 8:38 am

I think I speak for most Giants fans when I say THANK YOU! Thank you for NOT picking the Giants. The second someone picks them, they are in trouble!
