Compiling a Tampa playlist

brucespringsteen.jpgYou spend a lot of time in your rental car during spring training. There’s brutal traffic in Tampa and you have 15 or so away games. The local radio stations are generally useless and I don’t want to tote a bunch of CDs down there, so an iPod hookup is vital.

With that in mind, I’ve started compiling a Tampa 2008 playlist. Some new stuff, lots of old stuff. Mostly it’s music designed to keep me awake on those 7:30 a.m. trips to Legends Field and occupied while waiting forever to take that left onto Steinbrenner Drive.

(Yes, there’s actually a Steinbrenner Drive).

Here is what I have so far. There will be some additons and subtractions in the coming days. I’ll happily take any suggestions of new songs.

No Sleep Till Brooklyn (Beastie Boys)
Fake It (Seether)
New Dark Ages (Bad Religion)
It’s Tricky (Run-DMC)
Ladies and Gentlemen (Saliva)
I’m So Hood (DJ Khaled)
Keep the Car Running (Arcade Fire)
Party Like a Rock Star (Shop Boyz)
Girls In Their Summer Clothes -Live (Bruce Springsteen)
One More Road To Cross (DMX)
Go Getta (Young Jeezy_
Last to Die (Bruce Springsteen)
Where The Streets Have No Name (U2)
Kashmir (Led Zeppelin)
Only Rock ‘n Roll (But I Like It) (The Rolling Stones)
Rock And Roll Music (The Beatles)
The Real Me (The Who)
Working On The Highway (Bruce Springsteen)
American Land (Bruce Springsteen)
Police On My Back (The Clash )
Aftermath USA (Drive-By Truckers)
High Fidelity (Elvis Costello)
American Idiot (Green Day)
Paradise City (Guns N’ Roses)
Your Little Hoodrat Friend (The Hold Steady)
All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix)
Settle For Love (Joe Ely )
The Harder They Come (Jimmy Cliff)
Devil’s Right Hand (Johnny Cash)
The Revolution Starts Now (Steve Earle)
Danger Zone (Kenny Loggins)
I Am a Patriot (Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul)
Let My Love Open the Door (Pete Townshend)
Let’s Go Crazy (Prince)
You Got Me Rocking (The Rolling Stones)
Ball and Chain (Social Distortion)
Rock & Roll Queen (The Subways)
Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa (Vampire Weekend)
Lawyers, Guns And Money (Warren Zevon)

Pete, you have to throw some Nirvana in there. Smells like teen spirit maybe.

  2. RangerRob January 22nd, 2008 at 2:43 pm

    hey first post…cool

  3. Andrew January 22nd, 2008 at 2:46 pm

Kanye West’s Graduatin is a fantastic CD. “Flashing Lights” is a great song..

  4. Rob from NJ January 22nd, 2008 at 2:47 pm

Nice look on Vampire Weekend. You can download one of their tunes ‘Walcott’ on iTunes. Worth the $0.99.

The Subways are quite good. Saw them when they were in NYC two years ago.

I’d track down anything off the new album by Spoon (You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb is probably the best).

  5. Rob from NJ January 22nd, 2008 at 2:49 pm

Check that, Mansford Roof is the Vampire Weekend song on iTunes. Also a good one. The full album comes out next week.

  6. Kevin January 22nd, 2008 at 2:51 pm

Oh yeah baby, a little Social Distortion
They also do a great “Ring of Fire” not as good as Mr Cash but who could.

  7. Rick (Columbus) January 22nd, 2008 at 2:52 pm

I thought High Fidelity was REO Speedwagon :)

  8. Fernando Alejandro (Respect Jeter's Gangster) January 22nd, 2008 at 2:53 pm

I say you need to add Wutang’s “The Heart Gently Weeps”. Its a Wutang remake of the Beatle’s “My Guitar Gently Weeps”, and it features Dahni Harrison (George Harrison’s son) on the guitar.

  9. raymagnetic â„¢ January 22nd, 2008 at 2:53 pm

A Tribe Called Quest – Award Tour
Tupac – Definition of a Rider
    Dre – Let me Ride
Master Ace – Sitting on Chrome
    Snoop – Gin & Juice

  10. Dr. Cox January 22nd, 2008 at 2:57 pm

Thats a pretty weak setlist if you ask me. Give me one day, Pete. Ill have your ear drums salivating with my mix tape abilities….

  11. Pete January 22nd, 2008 at 2:58 pm

Possibly Free Fallin’ by Tom Petty

    Or maybe…

    Dr Dre’s Nothing But A G Thing

    Or even…

California Love by 2 Pac Ft. Dr Dre

All great songs if you ask me

  12. mel January 22nd, 2008 at 3:00 pm

I’ve got only one suggestion but it’s a kickass song.

    Conquest by White Stripes.

  13. Dr. Cox January 22nd, 2008 at 3:02 pm

    Free Falling?!?!?!?!

    leave the boards quietly, please…

  14. Yanksrule57 January 22nd, 2008 at 3:05 pm

    Rick,

That REO album I believe was “High Infidelity”. I only know that because my best friend from HS made me listen to it in his car constantly (on 8 track BTW).

  15. mel January 22nd, 2008 at 3:08 pm

Ugh, Tom Petty’s the halftime show at the most glamourous Superbowl ever. His music’s great, but I think I’ll just listen, not watch. Even Rick Ocasek’s better looking. I can’t believe he’s still married to Paulina Porizkova!

I wonder if Petty will top Prince in the naughty department? :)

  16. Camaroon15 January 22nd, 2008 at 3:09 pm

Here are some of my favorite:

Won’t get Fooled Again – Who

  18. bonnieh January 22nd, 2008 at 3:12 pm

Sounds like Radio Nowhere is really appropriate!
Also, forget Free Falling – Running Down A Dream from Tom Petty will keep you awake!!

  19. Yanksrule57 January 22nd, 2008 at 3:12 pm

    Pete,

I see you are a fan of the Beastie Boys also, good taste my friend…

Old stuff: How about the B-52′s? “Love Shack” is a good road tune.

    New Stuff: Finger Eleven, “Paralyzer”.

Also, your Ipod needs some Motown flava so anything by Stevie or Smokey would be good.

  20. 56Bomber January 22nd, 2008 at 3:13 pm

“Techno D-Day” or “Cool N Out” (Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros) would compliment that list nicely.

  21. Eric January 22nd, 2008 at 3:15 pm

Great list! You might consider some Boo Radleys (“Lazarus” or “C’mon Kids”) or Blue Aeroplanes (“Yr Own World”) or Ned’s Atomic Dustbin (“Kill Your Television”) You also can’t go wrong with “Up On Cripple Creek” by the Band or “Green River” by CCR. For some serious cruising, try “Amphetamine” by Steve Wynne …And, finally, “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” by the Stones will always take your mind off the traffic.

  22. nettles January 22nd, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Get some David Gilmour in there!

  23. Jim PA January 22nd, 2008 at 3:18 pm

Any Zevon fan’s gotta have “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner” and “Excitable Boy”. If you like Jimmy Clif’s stuff, the whole soundtrack from “The Harder The Come” is terrific.

  24. Vader January 22nd, 2008 at 3:20 pm

Danger Zone?? don’t tell me you have a bomber jacket and aviator sunglasses…only kidding.

I am a Patriot by Pearl Jam
Anything off Pearl Jam – Ten
Jane’s Addiction – Ritual De Lo Hibitual or Kettle Whistle
Chilli Peppers Stadium Arcadium and Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Nine Inch Nails – Pretty Hate Machine
    Metallica – Ride the Lightning
Rollin” by Limp Bizcut featuring Busta and Method Man.
N.E.R.D. – Rock Star, She Likes to Move, Lapdance
    Biggie – Hypnotize
    DMX – Rough Riders Anthem
Jay-Z – Show Me What You Got

So many more and if you like the Dead, any show can take you on a 2-3 hour trip.

  25. li January 22nd, 2008 at 3:20 pm

Brady has a bad right foot?

  26. mel January 22nd, 2008 at 3:21 pm

What you really need is some Bob Marley. Also expand those horizons with some arias like “Habanero” from Carmen or “The Flower Duet” from Lakmé

  27. Andrew January 22nd, 2008 at 3:22 pm

    Atlantic City – Bruce Springsteen

  28. Mike NYY- Save the Big Two January 22nd, 2008 at 3:23 pm

Not bad you need to get some more of that heavier stuff.

Nirvana is the greatest like the first commenter mentioned. If you some vicious hgardcore punk get Negative Creep (on Bleach). If you want some Beatles style rock get About a Girl (Bleach), Come As You Are (Nevermind) or really their entire MTY Unplugged in New York album. Its a chilling accoustic version of some old covers and original songs. Nevermind is one of the greatest lbums ever though. Smells Like Teen Spirit is a classic song on it but it doesn’t stop there. Just an amazing collection ranging from the softest most chilling song you`ve ever heard (Something in the Way) to the screaming Territorial P*******. In Utero is a great punk rock album. The versatitlity of the band was amazing.

  29. Mike in RI January 22nd, 2008 at 3:24 pm

    Pete,
Throw anything from Elephant by the White Stripes on and you’ll be good to go.

  30. RussoMcbo January 22nd, 2008 at 3:25 pm

    Cocaine – Eric Clapton
    Hold The Line – TOTO
    Amsterdam – Van Halen
On The Run – Lenny Kravitz
    Crazy Train – Ozzy Osbourne
Rock you like a hurricane – Scorpions
you can get the best of me – Cypress Hill

  31. Drive 4-5 January 22nd, 2008 at 3:27 pm

Depending how old old is.. in receeding order:

The Ticki Bar Is Open – John Hiatt
    American Music – The Blasters
    Spanish Moon – Little Feat
I Knew The Bride When She Used To Rock n Roll -Dave Edmunds
I Don’t Want to Discuss It – Delaney & Bonnie
    After Midnight – Eric Clapton
    Fortunate Son – CCR
    Shake – Otis Redding
Night & Day – Ray Charles
    Get Rythym – Johnny Cash
Mellow Down Easy – Little Walter

  32. YANKEE BIAS January 22nd, 2008 at 3:27 pm

    Pete,

    Palestinian Hip-Hop: http://www.dampalestine.com/main.html

Saw these guys, DAM Palestine, last night at Sundance.

They were there for the premiere of “Slingshot Hip-Hop”, a documentary on how they began the rap movement in Palestine and how it’s spread to the West Bank and Gaza. Surviving through music, not violence.

Seriously, check them out. You can also download their stuff on iTunes.

  33. Mike NYY- Save the Big Two January 22nd, 2008 at 3:32 pm

Bob Marley’s also really cool. Redemption Song is just beautiful.

Pink Floyd is a requirement for any music fan. Time is one of their best songs but you can get anything off of Dark Side of the Moon and you`ll be all right

Ozzy Osbourne’s music is all classics. Get Crazy Train off of his Randy Rhoad’s tribute album. Actually anything off of that album is pretty good.

Deep Purple’s Highway Star or Smoke on the Water is great

The Foo Fighters are great. I`ll Stick Around is one of their best.

Year Long Disaster is a band that just released their first album a year ago or so but they`re actually amazing. Best band around right now. Leda Atomica is great. A couple years from now they`re going to be huge.

You need some more Zeppelin and Who also. A little Black Sabbath wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

  34. Kevin January 22nd, 2008 at 3:36 pm

    Pete,
    Your list lacks country.
Add some Toby Keith, George Strait, and Brad Paisley.

  35. mel January 22nd, 2008 at 3:37 pm

O.K. I got a great road trip song:

    Radar Love (Golden Earring)

  36. mike from nc January 22nd, 2008 at 3:38 pm

It’s nice to see that you like Arcade Fire, if you don’t already have it, the whole Neon Bible album is great.

  37. Mike NYY- Save the Big Two January 22nd, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Also Pete, I`m sorry but you have to get American Idiot off your iPod. If you want some real punk get some of the Ramones (I Wanna be Sedated is a great, great song). The Sex Pistols are the most vicious classic punk band (God Save the Queen or Anarchy in the UK). The Clash are a great punk band that shows some versatility though you`ve got a song by them

  38. JBRO January 22nd, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Tampa picked up Mike and The Mad dog if your a fan of them. It’s on AM 1010. But yeah traffic does get bad around Dale Mabry especially rush hour…

  39. JBRO January 22nd, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Almost forgot, they don’t pickup Mike and the Mad Dog till 3pm…

  40. Ant928 January 22nd, 2008 at 3:41 pm

Same Old Song – Sev (From the old Pepsi commercial)
    Bodies – Drowning Pool
Take Me Home – Phil Collins
Down With the Sickness – Disturbed
    BOOM – P.O.D.
    Click Click Boom – Saliva
    Girlfriend – Avril Lavine
Stop The Rock – Apollo 440
    Summer Song – Joe Satriani
    Juke Joint Jezebel – KMFDM
Shake Your Tailfeather – Nelly, P. Diddy, Murphy Lee
Send Me On My Way – Rusted Root
    Solisbury Hill – Peter Gabriel
    Ready To Go – Republica
Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy) – Big & Rich
    Bawitaba – Kid Rock
    F*ck The Police – NWA

    That’s the short list.

  41. Michael T January 22nd, 2008 at 3:42 pm

    Pete-

Surprised that such a Springsteen fan hasn’t rocked any old school Graham Parker and the Rumour. The Boss himself is a big fan and even collaborated on a great sng “endless Night”. The entire albums Howlin’ Wind and Heat Treatment are stellar gritty “pub” rock with R&B/soul roots. And his third album “squeezing Out Sparks” was pretty revolutionary-teetering on the edge of rock and punk. The best singles are:

    - Heat Treatment
    - Pourin’ It All Out
    - Hotel Chambermaid
    - Howlin’ Wind
    - Don’t Ask Me Questions (rock with a reggae beat long before The Clash)

    - White Honey
    - Soul Shoes
    - Gypsy Blood
    - Fools Gold
    - Discovering Japan
    - Local Girls

Dig that Social D too. I’ve got tix to see them at the Filmore on Feb 2.

  42. mel January 22nd, 2008 at 3:44 pm

    JBRO,

I think Pete was looking forward to getting away from Mike & the Mad Dog. :)

    Pete,

Every song on Maxi Priest’s first album is good. You know, in place of Barry White? The ladies aren’t into the hard rock so much. ;)

  43. trombonist January 22nd, 2008 at 3:44 pm

you need some brass in your diet:
‘west end blues’ and ‘sunny side of the street’ by Louis Armstrong

  44. RosterRooster January 22nd, 2008 at 3:46 pm

    You only need one album:

Rick Wakeman’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth”

  45. JBRO January 22nd, 2008 at 3:48 pm

You can avoid that left onto Steinbrenner by getting off 275 at Himes, or making a right onto Himes of Kennedy Blvd. Take those up to MLK and take a left. Take MLK a block over to Dale Mabry and approach Legends from the north… You also knock out a bunch of traffic on Dale Mabry…

  46. Jaewon January 22nd, 2008 at 3:50 pm

    Only 4 Springsteen songs?

    I’m surprised, I expected more.

  47. bob January 22nd, 2008 at 3:51 pm

    JOHN LEGEND!!!!!!

he’s got a new cd, live from philadelphia!!!

    you’ll love it!!

  48. whoa January 22nd, 2008 at 3:52 pm

get the new mars volta album, the bedlam in goliath.

  49. Drive 4-5 January 22nd, 2008 at 3:52 pm

    JBRO

How is the parking situation if you come in from the north? Is it easier to get out after the game?

  50. Mike NYY- Save the Big Two January 22nd, 2008 at 3:53 pm

Here’s a quick 12 song list of songs you can buy on itunes.

    1) Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana)
    2) Crazy Train (Ozzy Osbourne, get the live Randy Rhoads version)
    3) About A Girl (Nirvana)
    4) Redemption Song (Bob Marley
    5) Highway Star (Deep Purple
    6) Leda Atomica (Year Long Disaster)
    7) Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin, its just so obviously a classic it can’t be ignored)
    8) Mob Rules (Black Sabbath)
    9)We Rock (Dio
    10) You Really Got Me (Van Halen, the original version by the Kinks practically invented metal)
    11) Time (Pink Floyd)
    12) Ain’t Talkin ’bout Love (Van Halen, tough call between the live and studio version)

  51. Mike NYY- Save the Big Two January 22nd, 2008 at 3:54 pm

BTW I`m curious, how many other people listen to Year Long Disaster?

  52. Anon January 22nd, 2008 at 3:56 pm

Needs more Pearl Jam, Pete. I’d highly recommend the songs Alive and Jeremy.

Maybe some Pink Floyd, too. I find Money to be a great driving song.

Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits is also nice for drives.

  53. Mike NYY- Save the Big Two January 22nd, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Pearl Jam but no Nirvana? Pearl Jam’s cool but they`re not even close to Nirvana. I love Ten but its worse than even Nirvana’s worst.

  54. Mick Jagger January 22nd, 2008 at 3:59 pm

YOU CAN”T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT (take heed Minnesota)

SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL (none for Boston)

  55. Pat G January 22nd, 2008 at 4:00 pm

Pete, you need some Be Your Own Pet. Any song by them will do just fine.

  56. ET90210 January 22nd, 2008 at 4:00 pm

Sorry to veer off-topic, but it appears the Rays will be signing James Shields to a 6-7 year deal in the next 24 hours…

    http://mlbfleecefactor.com/200.....term-deal/

  57. mel January 22nd, 2008 at 4:00 pm

Sorry, new songs keep popping up-staying with the driving theme. “Behind the Wheel” and “Route 66″ by Depeche Mode.

  58. JBRO January 22nd, 2008 at 4:01 pm

    Drive 4-5

Legends has a very small parking lot right next to it. I’ve never gotten there early enough to park there during spring training games or practices, only when I visited the gift shop in the off season. Most of the parking is done across Dale Mabry in the Raymond James(where the Bucs play) parking lots. There is a foot bridge that takes you over Dale Mabry directly to Legends though. Its a quick walk.

  59. Scott Bernstein January 22nd, 2008 at 4:07 pm

    Don’t forget about Umphrey’s!

  60. Rocco January 22nd, 2008 at 4:07 pm

Dynamite Hack – Boyz in the hood.

its the cover of the Easy E song.

  61. S.o.S.27 January 22nd, 2008 at 4:08 pm

I havnt seen anyone post DISTURBED. Cant go wrong with their stuff. Also cant remember the group that sings FIRESTARTER.Anyone?

Congrats to all GIANT fans from a COLT fan. I just read that Coughlin didnt know if he wanted to go for it or kick the field goal. But Tynes went out there without looking back therefore he decided to kick it. Talk about ice in his veins and not because of the weather. Ill be rooting for you guys to take down GOLLIATH. Your healthier now than you were in week 17 and you have the formula to beat them. A strong front 4 and a good running game. GOOD LUCK.

  62. Wotii Chang January 22nd, 2008 at 4:09 pm

Pete try some of these. The all-american rejects – change your mind, top of the world, it ends tonight. Hinder – Lips of an angel, Bliss, By the way. Akon – Don’t matter, Gringo. For Country I’d suggest:

    It’s 5:00 Somewhere – Alan Jackson (w/ Jimmy Buffet)

Rodrigo Y Gabriela has good covers of Orion by Metallica and Stairway to Heaven by Zep.

  65. S.o.S.27 January 22nd, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Whats everyones oppinion on L.T. sitting on the bench with his helmet on rather than being on the sidelines talking to his teamates and rooting them on? I for one didnt think he showed much leadership qualities in his actions. I know he must have been upset or down because he wasnt playing. But there is still a game to be played and some support for the ones playing wouldnt have hurt. Selfish if you ask me.

  66. Harley Peyton January 22nd, 2008 at 4:17 pm

Damn you Pete! Rock and Roll Queen must always be heard in its original form. By Mott the Hoople. There are some very good live versions as well.

My opinion is that he looked like Darth Vader.

Seriously, I can’t believe that Philip Rivers is love for playing after surgery (minor) and LT is getting blasted for the coach sitting him.

But yeah, it did look LT was pouting.

  73. The Monarch January 22nd, 2008 at 4:30 pm

    Peter,

For times that you’re stuck in traffic, I might suggest Springsteen’s “Trapped.” (Lyrics by Jimmy Cliff, but Tracks has Springsteen’s cover.)

Vader is pretty accurate. I am not one to support Rivers after his antics in Indy. They say he has a torn MCL. If it was my choice i would have sat him out in the second half. He couldnt throw it past 20 yards and everytime he scrambled he had nothing on it. But at least he showed some guts out there. As far as L.T. goes he is starting to look more and more like a spoiled baby. Last year he complained about the Pats celebrating. This year he decides to go in a shell after being benched. This team has noone to show by example. Pretty sad.

Congrats mel on your Pats. But as a Colts fan im a fan of two teams. Colts and anyone vs. the Pats. Hope this doesnt ruin our friendship.

For those who still care about Donnie Baseball, this is from the AP…
Don Mattingly won’t be alongside Joe Torre in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ dugout every game this year.
Mattingly will be moved from hitting coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers to major league special assignment coach for the 2008 season due to family reasons, the team said Tuesday. Mike Easler will replace Mattingly as hitting coach.
“Donnie is prioritizing his family first,” said the former MVP’s agent, Ray Schulte. “The Dodgers have been very supportive, creating a position so Don can still make a contribution to the team throughout the year!”

Thanks Ant. Your 2 for 2. I suck at remembering these things. Do you know who sings FIRESTARTER. They are a crazy group with the lead singer having colored mo-hawk.

Rob Zombie has some good stuff as well. I remember him having a song on WWE(awhile ago when i watched that stuff). I think Edge used to walk in with that song. Again, I know what sounds good to me. But cant seem to grasp both titles and Artist. Always remember one but not the other.

POD’s first major album, The Fundamental Elements of Southtown is great.
    I also really like 311…
The Crystal Method has great techno stuff
    Offspring – Self Esteem
Offspring – Pretty Fly for a White Guy
    Godsmack – I Stand Alone
    Control Machete – Si Señor
    Saliva – Click Click Boom
    Audioslave – Cochise
Rage Against the Machine – Calm Like a Bomb
Rage Against the Machine – Sleep Now in the Fire
    Oakenfold – Dred Rock
for classic jazz, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington…particularly Duke Ellington’s “Blues for New Orleans.”
Hmm….yeah, that’s about it. I tried to make suggestions no one else has yet.

I was also surprised by the relatively few Springsteen songs…

Peter, Check out the Arc Angels. They made only one album back in 1992 but it’s great. Band consists of Charlie Sexton, Doyle Bramhall, and Stevie Ray Vaughn’s rhythm sction (Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton). It was produced by Little Steven Van Zandt.

The newly added seats in RF will add to the traffic woes on Dale Mabry. The easiest “out” after games is to use Himes Ave behind RayJay and take a right on Columbus Avenue at the minor league complex then left on Dale Mabry if going south to the Interstate (275)

    j/k

Pete, you need a little more guitar in your diet there. It’s one of the staple audio food groups, bro.

    A couple of quick suggestions:

Los Lonely Boys: “Oye Mamacita” and “Seniorita”
    Stevie Ray Vaughan: “Voodoo Chile”
Jeff Beck: “”Savoy” and “Big Block”

  95. iYankees January 22nd, 2008 at 5:07 pm

Totally random indeed… but it is true, Ledger was found dead in Manhattan (I think Pete has spoke of the new Batman trailer). Horrible story.

  96. jerryd January 22nd, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Pete, don’t forget “The Killers”. The whole first album, Hot Fuss, is great, plus there are some great songs on the “Sam’s Town” album, including “When you were young” and “Read my mind”.

    Happy listening!

  97. WestCoastFan January 22nd, 2008 at 5:10 pm

    Pete,

The new Levon Help CD is great, awesome version of Steve Earle’s Mountain
Has to be some Spoon in there
No Sonic Youth or Yo La Tengo?
Rock ‘N Roll by the Velvet Underground (now that is a top 5 all time)
Anything from Chuck Prophet’s Soap and Water

lol. Why would i want you to do that. I cant stand the guy. To respond to your offer. Only after the Super Bowl. Its hard enough to continue to get Manning only has 1 vs. 3 super bowl rings Brady has. Cant afford to fall behind more than that. As i think they will both go down as 1 and 2 in the best q.b.’s of all time. With Super Bowl titles deciding who comes out on top.

You have to put the boys from Jersey in your playlist and that would be Bon Jovi Livin’ On a Prayer, Wanted Dead or Alive, You give love a bad name, Lay your hands on me, Keep the Faith, It’s my life, everyday, Have a Nice day. As for the Boss Long Walk Home, Livin’ in the future, Cadillac Ranch, Johnny 99, Jersey Girl, Girls in there summerclothes.

    best road tripping songs:

Money for Nothing – Dire Straits
Kickstart My Heart – Motley Crue
    Midnight Rider – Allman Brothers
    Sweet Emotion – Aerosmith
Turn the Page – Bob Seger

  104. Joe January 22nd, 2008 at 5:22 pm

    Hey Pete,

First time poster but long time reader.

I finally felt compelled to say something here since I generally appreciate your taste in music and was horrified to find that you listen to and (ostensibly) enjoy The Hold Steady. Yikes.

Please feel free look into the following bands/songs for good early morning/commute music.

Maximo Park – ‘Girls Who Play Guitars,’ &’By the Monument’
Arctic Monkeys – ‘Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured’
My Morning Jacket – ‘One Big Holiday’ (or anything by them really)
Band of Horses – ‘The Great Salt Lake’

And, of course, my favorite early morning album Kid A.

    Hope this helps.

  105. Gus G. January 22nd, 2008 at 5:22 pm

Any morning playlist has to have Elvis Presley, “I’m All Shook up.” Everytime I hear it, I picture myself making eggs in a frying pan. Flipping them behind my back, bopping around and whistling. Ah, good times. Have I ever done this? No… but I definately should!

And to add to “The Killers”… The title track to Sam’s Town is pretty good. Good song to cycle to.

  106. S.o.S.27 January 22nd, 2008 at 5:22 pm

  108. Gus G. January 22nd, 2008 at 5:23 pm

    Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel
    Graceland by Paul Simon

    They rock.

  115. The Doctor's Companion January 22nd, 2008 at 6:28 pm

Pete I highly recommend Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, it’s a very retro-sounding soul/funk band. And despite her bugging out over the past year, Amy Winehouse has a set of pipes on her. And of course, no playlist is a true playlist without Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades”.

O/T R.I.P Heath Ledger, when my brother told me I thought he was joking around, he was one of my favorite young actors. Dark Knight is gonna be so bittersweet to watch…

  119. mickey's monkey January 22nd, 2008 at 7:18 pm

Interesting playlist, Peter. Here are a few suggestions to consider:

    1) Breaking in My Heart–Tom Verlaine
    2) Circumstances-Captain Beefheart
    3) Rock ‘n Roll Nigger-Patti Smith
    4) Je Pense a Toi-Amadou and Mariam
    5) I Can’t Stand It-Velvet Underground
    6) Joy-Lucinda Williams
7)The Wild Blue Yonder-Screaming Blue Messiahs
    8)Thanksgiving Day-Ray Davies
    9)Stop Breaking Down-Robert Johnson
    10)Back to Schooldays-Graham Parker
    11)Hamburger Midnight-Little Feat
    12)Shoot Out the Lights-Richard Thompson

I could go on. But if none of those songs keeps you awake, you need medication, not music.

Love My Way – Psychadelic Furs
    Trash City – Joe Strummer
    Anything by The Ramones
Bored with the USA – The Clash or anything by The Clash (preferrably pre-Combat Rock)
    Agree with everyone on Nirvana
The Pogues are always fun as are the Dropkick Murphy’s if you can get past that they are Red Sox fans
    LaLaLove You – Pat Travers
    Blondie just because

Looking forward to Spring Training blogs…you’re the best

Against Me! – I think they are the best rock band to come out in a very long time. “We Did it All for Don”, “Cavalier Eternal”, “Walking is Still Honest”, “Thrash Unreal”, “Don’t Lose Touch”, “Sink, Florida, Sink” and “Baby, I’m an Anarchist” are all amazing songs.

    Agent Orange – “Breakdown”

Anti-Flag – “911 for Peace”, “This is the End”, “1 Trillion Dollars”, “Death of a Nation”.

The Aquabats – “Awesome Forces” (fun song)

Big D and the Kid’s Table – “My Girlfriend’s on Drugs”

Black Flag – “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme”, “TV Party”

The Bronx (appropriate) – “Heart Attack American”

Buck O Nine – “My Town”

Burden Brothers – Another great newer rock band. “Beautiful Night”, “Come on Down” and “Dirty Sanchez” are just a few of their amazing tunes.

The Casualties – “Tomorrow Belongs to Us”, “Fight for Your Life”

Circle Jerks – “Murder the Disturbed”, “Coup D’etat”

The Deftones – “Knife Party”, “Change” and “Digital Bath”

The Descendents – “Cool to Be You” and “Sad State of Affairs”

Dropkick Murphys – “Kiss Me I’m Shitfaced”

Elliott Smith – “Somebody That I Used to Know”, “Angels” and “Say Yes’.

The Flatliners – “Fred’s Got Slacks”

Flogging Molly – “Devil’s Dance Floor”

The Fully Down – “Never Enough”

Gogol Bordello – Anything by them but “Let’s Get Radical” is a favorite of mine.

Goldfinger – “King for a Day”, “Mable” and “Spokesman”

Greg Graffin – “Dream of Unity”

Guttermouth – “Pee in the Shower’

    Jackson 5 – “Candy Girl”

    Jurassic 5 – “Concrete Schoolyard”

Less Than Jake – Awesome band I Suggest “Liquor Store”

Love Equals Death – “When We Fall”

Mighty Mighty Bosstones – “Awfully Quiet”

NOFX – “Drugs are Good” and “The Decline”

Pennywise – “Society” and “Same Old Story”

Rancid – “Red Hot Moon” and “Fall Back Down”

Sick Of It All – “Us vs Them” and “Hands Tied, Eyes Closed”

Strike Anywhere – “Refusal” and “Laughter in a Police State”

TSOL – “Fuck You Tough Guy”

The Unseen – “Scream Out” and “False Hope”

The Vandals – “Change My Pants”

Any Classic Van Halen from the first six albums would do. Anything from Who’s Next would do. Any Floyd after Meddle would do. Alice In Chains Jar Of Flies is a good one as well. Emerson, Lake and Palmer but stay away from Love Beach. You have to have some Zeppelin in your collection.

Wolf I’m surprised of all people you didn’t suggest Halen. :)

  146. DHC January 23rd, 2008 at 10:39 am

Pete, learning something new will keep you awake a lot better than often-heard old favorites. And remember, just as baseball is America’s pastime, jazz is America’s own music. Buy albums, not songs, so you can get what’s happening with the music. Start with Miles Davis ‘Birth of the Cool’ and ‘Kind of Blue’ and work your way through “cool jazz” with Bill Evans (‘Sunday at the Village Vanguard’), Dave Brubeck (‘Time Out’), the Modern Jazz Quartet (‘Fontessa’), the Gerry Mulligan Quartet with Chet Baker, and if you want a vocalist take June Christy (‘Something Cool’). John Coltrane’s ‘My Favorite Things’. Then go to Stan Getz with Charlie Byrd (‘Jazz Samba’) and through that to the whole Bossa Nova thing, then modal jazz with John Coltrane again (‘A Love Supreme’, ‘Meditations’) and Miles of course shows up at every stage (here you’ll want ‘Nefertiti’ perhaps, and next as you move into post-bop his ‘In a Silent Way’, and then into jazz fusion you can’t go wrong with his ‘Bitches Brew’). By the time you’ve heard all this you’ll be screaming at me for the ones I’ve left out (I haven’t even mentioned Thelonius Monk, for example) and you’ll have your own favorite lines to pursue.

You’ll feel right at home when you discover how many jazz greats lived in your state of New Jersey.

  147. saucy January 23rd, 2008 at 10:45 am

these are the worst threads to show up late for. so many lists to read.

but i’m glad to see arcade fire in there. i have “no cars go” in my head now since seeing it. Neon Bible was okay, imo. doesn’t come close to Funeral though. and i’m pretty sure they have played live with Bruce.

  148. saucy January 23rd, 2008 at 10:56 am

also agree on the recommedations for ‘Spoon’. and i should add Modest Mouse’s latest. both great albums from 2007.

  149. AJW January 23rd, 2008 at 12:25 pm

DHC, I like Roundabout Midnight, Kind Of Blue and Porgy and Bess. Good Stuff. Miles is where it’s at.

  150. AJW January 23rd, 2008 at 12:29 pm

Some Jeff Beck would be good to. There and Back is my favorite CD. Wired and Guitar Shop are really good as well. Terry Bozio is kick ass on drums on that CD.

AJW, good choices. ‘Kind of Blue’ may be the best jazz album ever. But Miles’s music makes up a living history of jazz since the 50′s – brilliant at many stages, not stuck in one of them.

My old turntable recently croaked. I look at my shelves of old vinyl and wonder whether to get another one. But I know all I really have to do is go online and cram my nano with whatever I want to hear, so maybe the day of ‘physical music collection’ is over for me.

    iPod forever!

I recommend that you listen to fiction audio books in the car. I get them from my library on cd’s and download them to my MP3. Someone recommended this to me when I used to commute by car. I found myself hoping that the trip would take longer. I also listen while working out and doing mindless chores at home. Some favorite authors are Nelson DeMille, Brian Haig, David Rosenfelt, Lisa Scottoline.

I thought I was the only Torontonian here at Petes Place. Nice to know I’m not.

    Pete:

    (1) Grayson Capps: Born in Brewton, Alabama, this guy has a
great southern blues sound. He will keep you awake and
nodding your head in appreciation. (I recommend “Give it
to Me,” “Washboard Lisa,” and “Love Song for Bobby
    Long”)

    (2) Kings of Leon: I’m sure you know these guys. (I
recommend King of the Rodeo, Black Thumbnail, and
    Arizona).

(3)Mary Gauthier: Not entirely sure you’d be into her, but
some of her stuff reminds me of the “campfire”
Springsteen tunes. (I recommend “Mercy Now,” “Drag queens
    in Limousines,” and “I drink”)

Enjoy Tampa. If you’re into Irish music and beer – check out Flanigans in Dunedin. A little Irish Pub – but great live music and beer.

Now I do have Satellite Radio now to prevent this problem with not-so-great radio. I have enjoyed it a lot but I do like some of Peter’s choices like Fake It by Seether. I’ve started listening to a little bit of Rush and it’s good. Here are some other choices-

Trapt- Stay Alive, Stand Up, Headstrong
    Sixx:AM- Life is Beautiful
Evans Blue- Pin-Up but most of their music is good
NIN- Every Day is Exactly the Same
    Johnny Cash- Hurt
Puddle of Mudd- Blurry, Famous, Psycho
    Saliva – Ladies and Gentlemen
Dave Matthews Band- American Baby, Halloween, Gravedigger, Everyday, Dreamgirl
    Rush- Far Cry, etc
Seether- Fake It, The Gift, Rememdy, Truth,
Nickelback- Savin’ Me, If Everyone Cared, Animals, etc.

I do like classics like Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, the Eagles but since I don’t want to take half the page and tell you most of the songs I like Welcome to the Jungle or Enter Sandman, I’ll just write this instead.
