Mattingly leaves Dodgers staff

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jan 22, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Working on this story now, but Don Mattingly had left Joe Torre’s staff for “family reasons” and was replaced as hitting coach by Mike Easler.

UPDATE, 6:50 p.m.: Mattingly will be with the team in spring training and from time to time during the season. His plans are to rejoin Torre’s coaching staff in 2009. He has some issues at home to deal with and didn’t want to be distracted.

LA too far from Indiana? I’ve always really like donnie baseball. hope it’s not too serious

  2. Paulie January 22nd, 2008 at 5:30 pm

    Uh oh.

  3. Hugh Stacks January 22nd, 2008 at 5:34 pm

    RIP Heath Ledger…very sad.

  4. Hugh Stacks January 22nd, 2008 at 5:35 pm

I know that has nothing to do with Donny Baseball but I figured I would let all lohud readers know if they havent already found out.

  5. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! January 22nd, 2008 at 5:36 pm

    Hope everything’s all right.

(And I can’t believe Heath Ledger. RIP)

  6. Say it ain't so January 22nd, 2008 at 5:36 pm

I hope nothing very bad happened and that it was just a case of being away from home too much.

See now it’s a good thing for him he wasn’t selected manager, it probably wouldn’t have been quite as easy to get out of that.

  7. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes! January 22nd, 2008 at 5:51 pm

Not to be crass (sp) or anything, but isn’t it a good thing Donnie didn’t get the managers job here. We would have been left in a lurch.

  8. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes! January 22nd, 2008 at 5:52 pm

I heard Heath was found in one of the twins apartments. I can’t recall their last name.

  9. mel January 22nd, 2008 at 5:52 pm

I hope it’s second thoughts rather than something serious. Donnie to be a “special assignments” coach. He could’ve done that with the Yankees, but being passed over must’ve really stung.

  10. mel January 22nd, 2008 at 5:54 pm

    Jennifer,

Mary Kate Olsen’s apartment with pills strewn nearby. Maid went to tell him the masseuse had arrived and found him. I didn’t realize he was only 28.

  11. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! January 22nd, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Wait. He was in the OLSEN apartment?!

I didn’t realize he was so young either.

  18. Doreen January 22nd, 2008 at 6:11 pm

I hope everything is okay in the Mattingly family.

I also read that Knoblauch got subpoenaed today.

That’s bad news about Heath Ledger. And isn’t Mary Kate the twin with all the problems?

(And don’t we all love to gossip, just a little bit??)

    mel that is funny!!

    talk about being sore

“As a fan of Cleveland and of the Cavaliers, I’m wondering, why not a LeBron Cleveland Indians shoe?” Lloyd Boyd of Cleveland said after shopping for new sneakers at a suburban sporting goods store with his wife, Juanita. “He can do what he wants, but he is from Akron, not the Bronx.

Um dude maybe cause he is a Yankee fan, not an Indian.

  22. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes! January 22nd, 2008 at 6:14 pm

Doreen don’t they both have problems?

  23. Doreen January 22nd, 2008 at 6:18 pm

    Jennifer -

Yes. But I think Mary Kate is the twin who was (is) anorexic. Ashley is supposedly the more stable of the two. These girls are just a smidge older than my oldest daughter. When I see pictures of them, I cringe. I’ll admit I’m a perhaps naive, but they’ve looked “old” since they were 17.

    I feel so old.

  27. Doreen January 22nd, 2008 at 6:23 pm

In scanning the news page, I see that Ringo Starr walked off the set of Regis and Kelly this morning, because they asked him to shorten the songe he was going to play, and he could not cut enough off for them, so he just said buh-bye. This would not have been a problem had he just played one of the Beatles old standards which never went past 2 and a half minutes! :)

  28. Doreen January 22nd, 2008 at 6:26 pm

    Rebecca -

Nah. Those young women are old, old souls already. Lived too much and seen too much too soon. Also, taken advantage of by trusted adults.

You’re a baby, sweetie (and I mean that as a compliment)!

    RIP LEDGER

I know it hasnt come out yet.
Has anyone heard if in the Dark Knight movie, the joker has to comeback for the sequal? Or is it another new villian?

With all these stories about actors over dosing or being depressed in some way. It just shows you that money doesnt buy happiness.

  30. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! January 22nd, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Doreen: I love Ringo! You can’t cut art!

Also, I’ve probably seen more than you think.

  31. Doreen January 22nd, 2008 at 6:32 pm

    Rebecca –

I’ve no doubt you’ve probably seen more than I have! :)

  32. Doreen January 22nd, 2008 at 6:33 pm

    Rebecca –

Re Ringo: I don’t know about art, but you surely don’t cut one of the two living Beatles!

  33. gayle January 22nd, 2008 at 6:45 pm

First off sure hope that everything is ok with Donnie and the family not good news that is for sure.

Second dont believe everything you read on TMZ (if you have not already learned that by now) They did report that it was an apartment owned by Mary Kate then retracted (but of course left the original post up there) it but it just goes to show you that once it is out there it is very hard to take it back especially in the world of gossi[p internet sites who dont use traditional sourcing

  34. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! January 22nd, 2008 at 6:46 pm

    Doreen: Agreed.

  35. gayle January 22nd, 2008 at 6:48 pm

Thirdly on almost all of the morning shows as well as late night talk shows there is a time limit on the songs for performers and if you want to get more time you negotiate that BEFORE the day. My guess on what down having ha to do this many times is that his people knew that the limit was 3:30 they told him such but instead of dealing with it in advance they figured they would do it on site and like many have posted here figured they would not cut Ringo and have him not perform. Looks like they guessed wrong and in the end the only person that suffers is Ringo. Bad move.

  36. Paulie January 22nd, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Tiger attacks, Heather Ledger passes away, giants make it to the super bowl…what’s next? The mets get Johan?

  37. Fleas (Save Hughes::Get Johan::Bill Smith is an imbocile)) January 22nd, 2008 at 6:55 pm

The Mets deal is absolutely horrible. If the Twins are considering that, then Yanks need to step up with a Deal that keeps Hughes and Kennedy..

I say let her rip for Johan.. if it means no Kennedy or Hughes.. All this talk about replacing Hughes with Santana will only give us N number of wins and cost us N amount of money…

I tell you what .. if the rotation was ..

Santana, Wang, Pet, Hughes, Kennedy/Joba/Moose .. all I would have to say is WOW.

Oh man, this would be a dream come true!

  38. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! January 22nd, 2008 at 6:57 pm

Paulie: Have you heard that the world’s supposed to end in 2012?

    Rebecca & Doreen

FWIW Ledger was NOT found in the Mary Kate Olsen’s apt, but rather his own.

  42. Triple OG January 22nd, 2008 at 7:12 pm

How about this deal IPK,Horne,Melky,Marquez.Thats better than the Mets deal.

  43. Mark McCray January 22nd, 2008 at 7:19 pm

yeah….just imagine if mattingly had been manager of the Yankees…I am so glad they chose Girardi….

  44. Fleas (Save Hughes::Get Johan::Bill Smith is an imbocile)) January 22nd, 2008 at 7:20 pm

    hmmm,

There you go again.. “Mr. Know-it-all”. Yet still worthless. Carry on lass.

  45. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! January 22nd, 2008 at 7:23 pm

    Buddy: Yeah, I heard

  46. Bronx Liaison January 22nd, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Fleas, you probably cannot acquire Santana without including Hughes. If you are then determined to exclude Ian Kennedy in any deal of Santana, I would have to assume you’re trying to trade for Ervin Santana, not Johan. I like Kennedy a lot as a prospect, but I would be willing to make a deal of Kennedy, Tabata, Horne plus one more for Santana.

  47. Buddy Biancalana January 22nd, 2008 at 7:26 pm

    Fleas-

    You are spelling Imbecile incorrectly.

  48. Doreen January 22nd, 2008 at 7:29 pm

    Buddy -

Thanks. The report I read did not mention Mary Kate Olsen.

    Gayle -

Ringo’s people were indeed notified in advance of the appearance, and he did, in fact cut some of the song for the Letterman show and was prepared to cut his song down to something like 3 and a half minutes. The producers at Regis & Kelly wanted it cut further and that’s when they said no go. Apparently, Ringo, in true Ringo fashion, was not upset and said he’d gladly go back another time.

  49. Mark Alan January 22nd, 2008 at 7:34 pm

Easy Easler, the new Dodgers batting coach, very tragically has one more World Series ring than does “former Dodgers hitting coach” (if we can call him that) Don Mattingly. (Easler was with the ’79 Pirates.)

He played with Mattingly in ’86. Although Mattingly was known as “Donnie Baseball” and Easler was known as “Easy,” both players were also called “The Hit Man.”

I neither copied that from nor have written a baseball triva book; rather, I’m just sayin’.

  50. Mark Alan January 22nd, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Triple OG wrote: “How about this deal [for Santana]IPK,Horne,Melky,Marquez.Thats better than the Mets deal.”

I like the way you think, OG! That could be doable if the Yanks were willing to add Abreu, Rodriquez, and Mariano to their offer.

Seriously, how badly do we want Santana?

I was all for the trade during the meetings, but I’ve since been overcome by a strong desire to keep our stuff and deal with Santana through strength when he has nowhere else to go after the season. The Twins should get nothing, the [deleted plural foul noun].

  51. Buddy Biancalana January 22nd, 2008 at 7:41 pm

    Doreen-

Just to clarify, the Obama house party I went to the other night was one of several in San Francisco. Forrest Whitaker spoke to everyone on a conference call, though I missed the call due to my daughter’s nap. It’s just a way of rallying everyone for the Feb 5 Primary.

  52. Buddy Biancalana January 22nd, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Good knowledge Mark Alan, now can you dig up a poster of Mike Easler in a pinstripe suit?

  53. Fran January 22nd, 2008 at 7:44 pm

It seems that the Twins may have waited too long to trade Santana. The Yanks have pulled Hughes and the Red Sox are quiet. The Mets seem like the only team with any offer on the table.

  54. Doreen January 22nd, 2008 at 7:52 pm

    Thanks for the info Buddy.

  55. hmmm January 22nd, 2008 at 8:11 pm

“There you go again.. “Mr. Know-it-all”. Yet still worthless. Carry on lass.”

yes, you’re right. the Yankees can easily acquire Santana without giving up Hughes OR Kennedy when the Twins are currently demanding both Hughes AND Kennedy.

i forgot how much sense that makes.

    i am really an “imbocile”.

Some info on the Heath Ledger tragedy from CNN.

“Actor Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday of a possible drug overdose in a Lower Manhattan apartment, the New York Police Department said.

The Academy Award-nominated actor was 28.

Ledger was found naked and unresponsive, facedown on the floor at the foot of his bed by a housekeeper trying to wake him for an appointment with a masseuse, said police spokesman Paul Browne.

“Pills were found in the vicinity of the bed,” he told CNN.

“This is being looked at as a possible overdose, but that is not confirmed yet.”

Browne later told reporters some prescription medications were found in the room, including sleeping pills.

But he stressed police have made no determination of the cause of Ledger’s death — that would be done by the medical examiner.

He said the pills were not “scattered about.”

No note was found and there was no indication of foul play, Browne said. Ledger was found at about 3 p.m., and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel about 3:30 p.m.”

Four of the top ten yanks for one pitcher, plus Melky?
Melky, 1-IPK, 7-Marquez, 6-Horne, they also wanted 3-A-Jax. First, they wanted; Hughes, IPK, A-Jax, Horne, Melky and I believe Marquez…I think that was it. Would you do this if you were Cash? Anybody? Maybe now that the price may have come down, we may be able to work something out.27/08

According to the Daily News, it looks like Donnie Baseball separated from his wife and needed to stay home due to his youngest son.
