Cash and Theo talk the talk in Jersey

Peter Abraham
January

Brian Cashman and Theo Epstein appeared at William Paterson University tonight as part of a guest speaker series.

The two GMs, who become good friends, talked about a variety of subjects. When asked about Johan Santana, Cashman drew cheers. “My strong recommendation is that we stick with our young pitching and keep it in-house,” he said.

Cashman also compared what the Patriots have done in recent years to what the Yankees did during their dynasty run and spoke about his friendship with Patriots player personnel director Scott Pioli.

Oooo. Cashman and Hank dueling in the press. Go, Cashman, Go!

  3. Yanks4Life

I just returned from the lecture in Wayne, NJ and Brian Cashman never mentioned the Patriots. He did however, speak briefly about Tom Coughlin’s success with the Giants.

  4. Buddy Biancalana

    Pete-

You have made McLovin a very happy 12 year old.

Oh Cash, “Pride Goeth Before the Destruction.”

Hey, anyone out there follow the FranDog Marquis SuperBowl contest? They kept playing this audio on Thursday with the 4th question yesterday that I couldn’t figure out. Someone must have identified it because they’re using another voice id today.

Does anyone know who the heck the audio voice was in that 4th question? I recognize the voice and can’t identify and it’s driving me crazy.

  6. Joe Buck ruins my life with his bad MLB/NFL playoff announcing

Yea I think I will ignore Cashman’s friendship with Theo and front office guys at the Patriots. Those guys are strictly BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I will also ignore Pete’s love of the Patriots.

  7. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers!

I just found out my cousin is going to the super bowl.

Actually my cousins, plural. I believe they’re both Giants fans, but I might be mistaken.

Starting prices for tickets from scalpers is 2500 dollars. Unless they’re filthy rich I would sell em.

Becca, I still owe you a coupon. I haven’t forgotten. I just haven’t had time to take care of it just yet. Don’t worry I don’t renege on my bets.

I was in Wang’s homeland for the last two months on business– I even found some of those girls he told Jeter about.

Anyway, One gift certificate coming up to Purest Rebecca.

Kill Schill–Shouldn’t have said anything, I had long forgotten :-P

Now I’m all excited, seeing now I will have enough to get the complete Calvin and Hobbes =D

Cano deal is reported to be 4 years/ $30 million with 2 option years and a $2 million buyout. First option year at $12 million and second option year at $14 million. A 6 year/$56 million deal for Cano seems almost bargainlike these days.

  13. Rachel

See, even the NY Yankee general manager is wise enough to pay tribute to the great model franchise Patriots !!

Pats over Giants in Glendale next week !

If it was the audio about Detroit being too cold, it was Ty Warren.

ps i live in LA but i’m driving 6 hours. trust me its worth it. then again. i’m 23

  17. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers!

I’m in Syracuse, NY. Transportation is somewhat more complicated.

    Also I don’t do ladies.

  18. the todd

very true rebecca, but they are hot enough that you might think about it … plus i always hear you complain about the NY weather (rightfully so) thats why I headed west, that and my work, but a little 70 degree weather in February never hurt anyone.

  19. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers!

todd: New York weather, as in NYC weather, is fine.

Syracuse, however, on average about 10 degrees colder.

  20. Kill-Schill(ing)

Thanks Pat. Who the heck got it, finally? Ty Warren, my god.

  21. CaptainsCorner

I have never heard Cashman speak so honestly. It is nice to hear what he really thinks about the team. From nytimes article….

While retracing Bernie Williams’s unfriendly departure from the Yankees, Cashman said Williams had become more involved in his music “and that took away from his play” and that Williams had a “terrible season” in 2005. Cashman added Joe Torre had played Williams “ahead of guys who could help us win” in 2006, a reference to Melky Cabrera.

About the Play off series against Cleveland with the bugs:

“I thought our guys weren’t mentally tough enough to get through it,” Cashman told a fan, who had likened Chamberlain’s experience to one the fan had endured while visiting Africa.

  22. McLovin

    Buddy Biancalana-

Some Yankees reporting does make me happy on a Yankees Blog, who knew.

  23. Kill-Schill(ing)

Cashman really Said: “Williams had become more involved in his music “and that took away from his play” and that Williams had a “terrible season” in 2005. Cashman added Joe Torre had played Williams “ahead of guys who could help us win” in 2006, a reference to Melky Cabrera.”

Is this true? If it is, I’m beginning to dislike him more and more as each year passes.

  24. pat

I’m usually very supportive of Cashman but not of him making some of those comments publicly. Bad enough to call out an ex-manager but worse to call out returning players publicly.

Bernie comments aside, saying your team wasn’t mentally tough enough is an indictment of the entire organization from the GM who assembled the group, to the manager and to the players in general and Joba specifically. Sounds like a conversation more effectively held behind closed doors.

  25. ken777

Dose anyone get the feeling that Cash may be on his way out?Did he say anything that was not true? Maybe he is going to leave, otherwise I can’t see why he would say those things in public. Just a hunch, but look for Santana soon. Boy, am I the pessimist this AM. Damm, I hope it is just him being tough, we don’t want to give up the young guys. 27/08

  26. i miss bernie

slamming bernie and torre after the left is bad enough, but slapping johnny damon and saying the yanks weren’t tough enough, sound like he’s outta here. If i were Hank or Hal, i’d seriously consider letting him go now.

  27. ken777

The last time I heard someone say things like Cash did, it was because he was very frustrated and wanted out. May be, this is his way of telling the brothers…”I don’t like the way you are pushing me like your dad did years ago.” Look where that landed us. “Let the management team do our job.”

Have you ever noticed how people will say; “Damm, he is one tough nut?” Most of the time that person has to be that way to survive. What team is more demanding then the Yanks?

Heck, just a thought anyway. We will know very soon if there is going to be any fall out. But again, did he not tell the truth?

  28. Kill-Schill(ing)

No, “he didn’t tell the truth”

Bernie came into camp in exceptional shape in 2006 and after injuries to Sheff and Matsui largely saved the Yankees season. Torre played Bernie over Melky, when he had the opportunity, because Melky misplayed two routine fly balls in ‘05 and to this day, still takes poor routes to the ball. And quite frankly, even after his skills declined, Bernie was still a better hitter than Melky is now.

And quite frankly, if Cashman is so eager to assess blame for the Yankees failures the last few seasons he should look in the mirror.

Cashman’s right to slam Damon & Abreu for being out of shape; that was an honest, accurate critique. perhaps the Yanks would have won the division if these 2 millionares ate a few less Big Macs and did some laps or something.

the most important thing here is that he said it won’t happen again; i wonder if this means there’s more off-season monitoring, etc.
