Cashman's right to slam Damon & Abreu for being out of shape; that was an honest, accurate critique. perhaps the Yanks would have won the division if these 2 millionares ate a few less Big Macs and did some laps or something.

the most important thing here is that he said it won't happen again; i wonder if this means there's more off-season monitoring, etc.

No, "he didn't tell the truth"

Bernie came into camp in exceptional shape in 2006 and after injuries to Sheff and Matsui largely saved the Yankees season. Torre played Bernie over Melky, when he had the opportunity, because Melky misplayed two routine fly balls in '05 and to this day, still takes poor routes to the ball. And quite frankly, even after his skills declined, Bernie was still a better hitter than Melky is now.

If Cashman is so eager to assess blame for the Yankees failures the last few seasons he should look in the mirror.

The last time I heard someone say things like Cash did, it was because he was very frustrated and wanted out. May be, this is his way of telling the brothers..."I don't like the way you are pushing me like your dad did years ago." Look where that landed us. "Let the management team do our job."

Have you ever noticed how people will say; "Damm, he is one tough nut?" Most of the time that person has to be that way to survive. What team is more demanding then the Yanks?

Heck, just a thought anyway. We will know very soon if there is going to be any fall out. But again, did he not tell the truth?

slamming bernie and torre after the left is bad enough, but slapping johnny damon and saying the yanks weren't tough enough, sound like he's outta here. If i were Hank or Hal, i'd seriously consider letting him go now.

Dose anyone get the feeling that Cash may be on his way out?Did he say anything that was not true? Maybe he is going to leave, otherwise I can't see why he would say those things in public. Just a hunch, but look for Santana soon. Boy, am I the pessimist this AM. Damm, I hope it is just him being tough, we don't want to give up the young guys. 27/08

I'm usually very supportive of Cashman but not of him making some of those comments publicly. Bad enough to call out an ex-manager but worse to call out returning players publicly.

Bernie comments aside, saying your team wasn't mentally tough enough is an indictment of the entire organization from the GM who assembled the group, to the manager and to the players in general and Joba specifically. Sounds like a conversation more effectively held behind closed doors.

Cashman really Said: "Williams had become more involved in his music “and that took away from his play” and that Williams had a “terrible season” in 2005. Cashman added Joe Torre had played Williams “ahead of guys who could help us win” in 2006, a reference to Melky Cabrera."

Is this true? If it is, I'm beginning to dislike him more and more as each year passes.

I have never heard Cashman speak so honestly. It is nice to hear what he really thinks about the team. From nytimes article....

While retracing Bernie Williams’s unfriendly departure from the Yankees, Cashman said Williams had become more involved in his music “and that took away from his play” and that Williams had a “terrible season” in 2005. Cashman added Joe Torre had played Williams “ahead of guys who could help us win” in 2006, a reference to Melky Cabrera.

About the Play off series against Cleveland with the bugs:

“I thought our guys weren’t mentally tough enough to get through it,” Cashman told a fan, who had likened Chamberlain’s experience to one the fan had endured while visiting Africa.
