Cashman rested and feeling Super

Peter Abraham
January
25

Just got back from the Stadium where the beat writers had a meeting with the media relations staff.

Ran into Brian Cashman, who just got back from a week on the beach with his family. True to his nature, he did a little work and hammered out the new contract for Robinson Cano. We should get the official announcement on that sometime soon.

Cashman is headed for Arizona to see the Super Bowl. He once shared an apartment with Tim Coughlin, the son of Giants coach Tom Coughlin. Cashman is also tight with former Giants GM Ernie Accorsi.

Cashman touched on a few other subjects: He said Hideki Matsui is healthy and will be ready to go for spring training. The Yankees are hoping he will arrive early and working to set that up. … Chien-Ming Wang has arrived in Phoenix and will work out with a trainer there before heading to Tampa. … The Yankees were involved with Octavio Dotel but only wanted him for a year. Once the White Sox offered two years and $11 million, that was that. … I asked why J.B. Cox wasn’t invited to spring training. It’s because Cox is still recovering from surgery and will be on the rehab list. “No sense him coming, but we could see him at some point,” he said.

If you haven’t been to the Bronx in a while, you will be stunned at how much progress they’ve made with the new Stadium. The beat writers will be getting a tour sometime before spring training and I’m looking forward to that.

Pete- If allowed, bring a camera and take tons of pictures.

Man. It’s so not fair. Cashman gets to go to Arizona and then Tampa, and I’m stuck here, freezing my arse off and summer seems like such a long time away…

…I mean, I’m knitting scarves. I could be Cashman, though, going to where it’s warm, and then knitting tank tops and skirts.

  3. saucy

know what you mean rebecca. this is my first winter upstate and just when it feels like winter should be over soon, i look at the calander and realize it really hasn’t started yet :/

  4. pat

Guess that answers my question of who negotiates when Cash is on vacation. He does.

I drive past the stadium a few times per week and the front facing with Yankee Stadium in gold looks awesome. They really are making progress.

  5. Blargh

Rebecca: You could be Cashman, whose moves we rabid fans question/discuss every day…oh, and don’t forget the rest of the NY-NJ area media ;)

Is that worth going to warm places? xP

  6. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers!

Blargh: You don’t know me very well :-P

I chose to give a graduation speech in high school.

I can never have too much attention :-D

Saucy: I feel for you! Worst is my brother, who goes to school in Central Florida and he will IM me and be like “oh man, it’s only 58 outside, I’m freezing” and I’m like “dude. Try seven.”

    Peter,

Do you know if Wang is working out at Fisher’s place (he a fitness guru of sorts, he tried to help Pavano, but wound up angry at him, surprise surprise).

Hope to see ya at the dinner sunday.

  8. RVA Yanks (ESPN is not allowed on the Giants' bandwagon)

Gosh Pete, sometimes I wish I had your job. I get to go to the Bronx about every 5 years because I’m not close (even less when I was on the west coast), and when I went this past May I high-fived everyone as I left even though we were destroyed by the Rangers.

This year my Dad and I are heading up to the Stadium to bid it farewell. Should be a great trip, I can hardly wait.

  9. Jeff NJ

Anyone else feel bad for Wang? I mean he came up at the same time as Cano and probably will not get the same type of deal. Will be interesting to see who makes more over their career.

    More blogs! Yay!

(but alas, poor Phil Hughes, he’s all alone!)

  11. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers!

Jeff: I think if Wang wanted the attention, he’d get it, but you see how much he gets nervous in front of the press and all that…

…I don’t know him, obviously, but he comes across as a guy that Just likes to do his job =)

    Rebecca -
It’s a little chilly here in Boston – but next weekend I’ll be in Boca Raton for 4 days. It was 73 there today – and someone there said it was ‘cold’

I’ll wish for that kind of cold next time I’m visiting Ticonderoga

Looks like Livan Hernandez will sign with the Mets & reunite with his half brother El Duque. Johan probably won’t be a Met. Morneau is close to signing a longterm deal with the Twins. So either the Twins lower their demands for Johan or he stays a Twin at least until the trading deadline.

No Santana questions.Of course not we have to deal with more blog rumors when that question could have squash all stupid rumors.Just say “Are we keeping the big three”.

Yes we all were thinking “Where’s J.Brent Cox”.Great reporting surpised you didn’t ask Brian if he was a Patriots fan.

I know this will be like trying to squeeze water out of a stone but I’ll ask anyway; do you really think Cashman would have answered even if Pete had asked him that question?

  18. Hideki Balboni

Cashman will be on vacation for as long as Hank is calling the shots. Time to go.

  19. McLovin

Better then nothing I try to read inbetweeen Brian’s lines. In the 2005 off season for Damon when he said that “We were ready to have Bubba Crosby in centerfield if we have to” but then said something like he was seeing if the contract was right with the Yankees and made sense and that was in January of that year and we still got Damon anyway.

Save the Prospect questions for Damon Oppenheimer.Whats next we are gonna ask Andy Pettitte about if he sw the Superbowl rather then why he took HGH.Great Yankees beat questions.

  20. RVA Yanks (ESPN is not allowed on the Giants' bandwagon)

Anyone see Bill Simmons marathon chat from Wednesday? I was checking out the log of it and there’s a big doozie in here:

“Alex (NYC): In regards to the potential Johan trade, what are your thoughts for each team involved? I mean, obviously, getting a #1 of that quality would make a huge difference, but given what the twins are asking, are there teams that cannot afford to make the trade without legitimately sacrificing their future?

Bill Simmons: I discussed this with JackO in the podcast that’s going up today (we did 2 this week) – in my opinion, the Yanks will get Johan because Hank Steinbrenner wants to make a big splash and doesn’t want to look like he’s off to a weak start, so I think he’ll overpay.

Bill Simmons: In this case, I actually think they SHOULD overpay because Johan is the best pitcher in baseball. But eventually, Hank will ruin the Yanks. And their fans know it. He’s like James Dolan 2.0.”

This sounds like his Boston fandom getting in the way of reality because it’s more of a “I hope Yankee fans feel this way/Yankees will do said trade” than it being the truth. Personally with Matsui as a big question mark and the news about the Cano deal we’re not getting rid of either, which means more prospects (or perhaps they’d now demand both Kennedy and Hughes/Joba in addition to 2-3 other prospects) to get it done which I don’t see happening as long as Boston doesn’t get serious. About Hank, I don’t have any qualms yet, but I feel it’s too early to make a judgment call if he’ll be a cancer or a big help. I thought Hank was finally realizing that this deal doesn’t help (at least financially) us? I just hope Cash and Co. stick to their guns with player development through the farm.

  22. McLovin

Help us finacially….we could get him for $13 million this year and HGH Pettitte and Giambi will help us finacially next year. The players should be the only thing worrying fans the players it’s Hanks money and what he does with it is his problem let him waste money.Lets keep Hughes but if they wanna give Santana $22 million, give it he’s worth it in this market.

  23. Peter Abraham

McLovin: Do you really expect Brian Cashman to talk on the record about Santana? Right, that’s what he does all the time. A bunch of us were in the lobby of the Stadium and he filled us in on his secret plan to obtain Santana.

Beyond that, isn’t clear to you that Cashman doesn’t want to make that trade? He has pretty much been saying that since Nashville.

For the record, he shrugged his shoulders and said “nothing happening” when we asked him. Sorry if I didn’t report that stunning bit of news.

  24. jonesing guy

come on, dammit, its been 3 months without any….i need a hit, a brushback pitch, a line drive off the foul pole, SOMEthing!!! ANYTHING!!!I TELL YA I CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!!!!!!

  25. Jennifer - Save Phil Hughes!

Pete please bring a “real” camera with you!! I’d love to see up close pictures, if they let you of course.

  26. McLovin

    Pete-

Thats all I want, will check on J.Brent Cox when he’s on a mound.

Did anybody see that kid we got for 7 years.Canberra.Anybody got more info on this kid.

  27. Bronx Liaison

Who cares what Bill Simmons says anymore. All I hear is blah blah blah Sportsgal, blah blah blah Tom Brady blah blah..

He’s trying to be funny more than providing any type of real analysis of the new Yankees ownership. Yes it is wishful thinking on his part, but really none of us know what impact Hank&Hal will have on the Yankees’ future – for better or worse. A little more than a few months of public posturing will have to take place before you can label him Dolan 2.0 or George 2.0.

  28. RVA Yanks (ESPN is not allowed on the Giants' bandwagon)

Bronx Liaison: Agreed. I think he likes his sarcasm/sportswriter-fan shtick a bit too much.

  29. Fran

I was up in the Bronx today and passed by the stadium. I too was amazed at how much work had been done. And seeing the gold letters “Yankee Stadium” on the outside gave me the chills.

  30. ken777

Tampa here I come just 20 days away…not!
I was ready to head out again this year but, sickness in the family. Oh well, family comes first. Anyone going down, give us a shout back.

  31. PittsburghYankeeFan

Maybe I’m getting primed for the start of ST, but something tells me the Yanks are going to have a butt kicking year. They’ll do it with or without Santana.

Note to Boston: The WS champs for the past 5-6 years have failed to make the post-season the following year.

Young pitchers with tons of talent, ARod and Jeter anchoring a 1000 run lineup, a fresh outlook in Girardi–I like what I see.

Wang is working there(Fisher’s place), you can check Wang’s name on the client list…
http://www.fischer-sports.com/Clients.html (looks like they didn’t update…because RJ still a Yankee pitcher on the site)

A lots of CSMG Taiwanese clients work at there (when they close to MLB).

Wang start work there since 2005(before Spring Training), probably because that, Wang pick RJ as his partner after he made mistake at Spring Training’s PFP… Since that year, he work at there before go to Tempa…

Remember last season when Brett Fischer told mlb.com that he put Pavano and Wang side by side throwing Bullpen sessions when they were there….

  33. rover
