Run Chuck, Run!!!
Totally unrelated, but check out the interesting 3-part Q&A with Royals pitcher Brian Bannister. He’s very analytical and stat-oriented in his preparation, and he expresses himself well:

Just for confirmation…Why are only Yankees testifying?
because people hate the yankees and anything to make them look bad makes people happy. pure jealousy
Hopefully Andy Pettitte will talk more but knowing him he only talks when he’s forced too or he’s on a report does he have to admit he’s a cheater.
Mike:
Because Mitchell’s on the Red Sox Board of Directors.
Or something of the sort.
It is funny to me how the Non-Pete types covering this story act as if Knoblauch is on the run. Its why I crack up everytime I read an entry on Pete on this subject.
Some sportswriters and talking heads have really lost their minds on the steroids story in general and this story in particular.
NOBODY that matters (ie: the fans) give a crap about ANY of this stuff.
The only people that care are the media moralists (some of whom I KNOW have done MUCH worse in their lives than taking steroids) and nosy people who just enjoy reading dirt on famous people.
That’s the audience the Congress Of The United States are serving on this issue. What a joke.
SJ: No. Not a joke. Jokes are funny.
There are so many other things Congress could be dealing with right now, things that actually matter, and they choose this.
They could be dealing with healthcare, education, the economy (which is about to bottom out) and that’s just in their own back yard, nevermind Iraq, Darfur, the price of oil…
It’s not funny. It’s scary.
This is the land of the free, home of the brave?
Its got nothing to do with Mitchell being on the Red Sox board, its because these guys are all tied to Radomski and McNamee.
“It is funny to me how the Non-Pete types covering this story act as if Knoblauch is on the run. Its why I crack up everytime I read an entry on Pete on this subject.”
I think – make that I hope – most people are kidding about it. I know I have been.
“Its got nothing to do with Mitchell being on the Red Sox board, its because these guys are all tied to Radomski and McNamee.”
Drew…you cannot be that naive. Seriously. The only people that think like you are red sox fans who know they dodged many bullets by having their board of director member focus on their arch rival.
We KNOW for a fact that many red sox busted for steroids never even had their names mentioned in that biased and incomplete piece of dog###t document.
Rebecca,
Good point. It isn’t a joke. Its sad. Its REALLY sad people keep feeding into this stuff. That’s why its still a story.
Folks are too overly by the media today. They don’t form their own thoughts. They listen to their pets on talk radio, ESPN or other outlets, and just parrot them.
Its sad.
When Pete, for example, puts this stuff in proper perspective, folks come on here and rip him mercilessly.
As long as there are sports, there will be people looking to bend the rules to gain an edge. Its NEVER GOING TO CHANGE.
The starting safety for the NE Patriots this weekend is an acknowledged HGH buyer and user. Yet, he escapes with little or no hassles from the media or the McLovin types who live to call people cheaters.
Baseball players? They are being treated like criminals. Which, they AREN’T!!
Congress wants to vilify the players yet heap only praise on the Commissioner of the Steroid Era? Makes zero sense to me.
Well, it does. Its an indictment of what’s wrong with our political systems and what’s wrong with our country. Too much focus on the wrong things and Congress catering to folks who keep them in office.
I really wish all this would go away. It’s no even about them being Yankees. This whole thing is such a complete and utter waste of time. Waste of tax payers money, and only appeases those who were so naive to begin with.
Last time I checked there was a war going on…I agree total waste of time
SJ: You know what the fun part in all of this is?
Trying to explain it all to my friends in England, Australia, Canada and the Netherlands…
Having these Congressional hearings makes me think of that Kid Rock song ‘Bawitdaba’: It makes no sense but people will listen anyway:
‘Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy’.
“We KNOW for a fact that many red sox busted for steroids never even had their names mentioned”
That being true has nothing to do with Mitchell being biased or not. There were plenty of other teams that got off pretty clean as well. Why? Because the sources were from NY.
The report was far from an exhaustive list of users from the past, that is true. Given that, it begs the question of whether naming any player at all had any value beyond grabbing media attention and providing a scapegoat to give the appearance of “getting tough”. But it doesn’t show any wrongdoing by Mitchell.
Congress should be looking into why the IRS, FBI and US Attorney spent significant time and tax payer money to assist a paid private investigator conducting a corporate, non-criminal investigation. They made deals on two criminal cases, crediting the bad guys with cooperation running to MLB and leading to no new arrests. That tied up numerous public employees for countless hours when they could have been doing something they are actually authorized to do instead. And the meter is still running as the Feds hover around the upcoming Congressional proceedings awaiting important further orders from Congress, like investigating Tejada.
I’d like to see the bill in terms of hours, material, travel etc., dedicated solely to MLB. Last I checked they had enough money to pay for their own investigation, assuming of course that they wanted a thorough one. (Quite an assumption, that). At the very least MLB should have to reimburse the Federal Government for the outside-the-mission services rendered.
Can you imagine what would have been said if the US Attorney’s Office, the FBI and IRS CID had decided to help General Motors or Walmart perform some internal corporate investigation, knowing that no prosecution would be forthcoming?
Since the last time the Yankees have seen of thrown a pitch in earnest, 6 stories have been beaten beyond regognition by most of the media.
- The emergence of Hank & Hal Steinbrenner.
- The Torre departure / Girardi entrance.
- A-Rod’s opt out and eventual re-signing.
- Santana deal or no deal.
- The re-signing of Posada and Rivera.
- The Mitchell Report.
It would be poetic justice to see Jose Molina get the game winning hit that sees championship No. 27 realized.
Congress is too busy giving themselves salary increases to care about actual important matters.
If it’s finding a way not to put priorities in the right place, the House and Senate will surely find that way. The real issues of the time find their way to the back burners just as sure as there’s 108 stitches on a baseball.
Peter I read that article in the news titled giants-Pats
rivalry pales in comparison to Yankees-Red Sox.
I read page 4A last season they played 18 not 19 times.
I see it says that your a Patroits fan Im a Oakland
Raiders fan so I will be rooting for New England if they
win the giants record would be 2-2 the Raiders would be
3-2 so im rooting for the Patroits. It also metioned that
you agreed that the Boston-New York baseball rivalry is the
Athens and sparta of sports I DON’T AGREE AT ALL I feel
Hockey is the most exciting sport so Im going to say that
the Montreal Canadiens Toronto MapleLeafs are the most exciting rivalry in sports.
The joke is that Pete got the report wrong again.
The subpoena was withdrawn, which means he wasn’t nabbed or “knabbed” or tracked down.
He’s “agreed to talk” to the Congressional committee, either deposed testimony or an interview, which means it’s voluntary.
No, what’s funny is that Randy Hendricks has issued a 49 page Clemens Report outlining a lot of generalized statistics (taking a page out of Scott Boras’ books on ARod, no doubt) that “prove” that Clemens could not have taken PEDs at any time in his career.
I predict that some people will not question a single obfuscating stat in the report. I also predict that stat hounds are falling on this report as we speak, and will attempt to shoot it down.
“Drew…you cannot be that naive. Seriously. The only people that think like you are red sox fans who know they dodged many bullets by having their board of director member focus on their arch rival.”
It’s not naivete at all. It’s the truth. Too many Yankees fans think the world is against them.
No name:
Um, I was being sarcastic when I posted that. I read the story and I know what happened. Perhaps you need some awareness-enhancing drugs. I’ve been having fun with this Knoblauch thing for a few days.
Just relax.
I gotta agree with SJ and Murphy, this is totally out of control. I will believe more in congress if they were being tested for substance abuse and those not passing sobriety or any other mind altering substances would not be able to vote. I don’t think they would be in office too long.
Dear Pete: Thanks for responding. If you were being sarcastic in an “I already know the true story but I’m putting this “Run Chucky Run” sequel on the blog…because I CAN” sorta way….
Then maybe you ought to use /sarcasm at the end of posts like that, so people like me can actually tell the difference between a completely serious blog entry by you — presumably the only card-carrying journalist among us — and a fantasy blog entry.
Leave the fantasy blog comments to the rest of us. Or better yet, take an alternate ego, and post fantasy under that name.
No Name:
Sorry, I’m not going to dumb down the blog. If “Knabbed” wasn’t obvious enough for you, I’m not sure what else to say.
Well…
Good Luck, Chuck — Call your answers in from Aruba.
Stay away from Mitchell.
Hello Red Sox fans — Mitchell’s on your Board; you got off ’scott-free’ and he focused on New York connection only; we all understand; quit playing the ‘holier-than-thou’ wide-eyed innocent dolt schtick….it makes you idiots look even stupider than you actually are.
Realistically – you should be laughing like hell ! Laughing that your ‘old goat’ Board Director refused to talk to anyone near his Boston team yet was focused on hammering the Yankees/Mets.
Like another poster said – if it was Randy Levine as the head of this “commission” and he focused only on the Boston towelboys ….we’d hear the same complaints and recognitions of the obvious….except we’d hear it all with the sad accents and typical Boston oral Bean-Fartings…
You people are really idiots. Let’s cover the facts…
Mitchell is NOT A BOARD MEMBER of the Red Sox. He has been in the past and probably will be in the future a consultant for the Red Sox, he has no ownership stake in the Red Sox, he has no voting power. His title and listing as “Director” is pretty much an honorary title based on his past work with the team. GOT IT??????
Second, he didn’t “focus” on those sources, the Federal Government gave him those sources. Mitchell had no sources, he couldn’t get the players to testify and he didn’t have any subpoena power, remember, this was a private investigation by a private organization.
Don’t let facts get in the way of your insane conspiracy theory rantings.
Pete…
With some of the spelling, grammar and punctuation errors rampant on most blogs — “they’re problem is its wrong” instead of “their problem is it’s wrong”, “phased” instead of “fazed”, “your an idiot” instead of “you’re…” well, no one should be saying that anyway — and, of course, “knabbed” intead of “nabbed”.
Anyway, if you’re going to blog like a goof, be my guest.
