Tragic loss for a true professional

Keep the family of Bob Ryan in your thoughts. His son, Keith, was found dead in Pakistan earlier this week.

Bob is a New Jersey native who works for the Boston Globe as a columnist. If you read Bob, you know his passion for baseball and the respect he has for the Yankees. In a business full of pandering yahoos, he’s one guy who always writes what he believes. Some kids grew up wanting to be the center fielder. I grew up wanting to be Bob Ryan.

In speaking to some friends I have at the Globe, the whole staff is in shock. Hopefully Bob will make his peace with this and we’ll see him at spring training.

I once ran into Bob Ryan at Logan Airport in Boston. I wanted to respect his privacy and at the same time simply tell him I appreciated his articles and his work. He was very cordial and my prayers and thoughts are with him during this very difficult time for him and his family.

VERY sad. Bob Ryan is a throwback to when sportswriters were truly journalists. For those of us who lived in New England in the 70′s and early 80′s, it was a real treat to read Leigh Montville, Peter Gammons and Bob Ryan in the Boston Globe. I always turned to Ryan’s column first.

Last year I saw Bob Ryan at a diner on 9th Ave. I glanced at him as he was paying his check and he smiled back. By his writing and the way he carries himself, you can just tell this guy is one solid human being. This is a tragedy that is just unbearable for a family to endure. My heart goes out to the entire Ryan family.

Bob Ryan is one of the few real journalists covering sports left in Boston. His kind have gradually been replaced by hipster careerists whose stock in trade is sucking up to the teams and athletes they cover.

Condolences to Bob Ryan and his family.

Mr. Ryan has always come across as a thoughtful and decent person. It’s terrible that he and his family have to endure this kind of pain. I wish there was something we could do for them.
