Abreu visiting Taiwan

4205656-1787792.JPGI’m not certain why, but Bobby Abreu arrived in Taiwan yesterday. One of our readers, Grace, sent along some photos.

Abreu has the locker next to Chien-Ming Wang and they got to know each other well last season. But Wang is in Arizona working out.

Abreu reportedly will be visiting China and Japan on this trip as well.

  2. Paddy R

i’m not sure if this is why, but he was in taiwan/china last year around this time to look into a shoe venture he was looking to get in to.

Morning. Haven’t posted in a while, but I’m getting geared up for spring training and the 2008 season. Great article in the Times today about Cashman. This quote from Tyler’s article just makes me smile:

Whether or not he is here beyond 2008, his friends say, Cashman wants the team to prosper for the next decade and beyond.

Accorsi recalled a conversation with Cashman at Giants Stadium a few years ago. Talking about their jobs, Cashman told Accorsi, “I feel the responsibility of millions of Yankee fans on my shoulders, fans who take this very seriously and for which every game is very important. I think of that every day.”

As a peer, Accorsi said, he could relate to Cashman. As a Yankees fan since the 1950s, Accorsi was moved. “I love the fact that Brian is running my boyhood team,” he said.

Reportedly ,Abreu came to Taiwan for his own sportswear business. The sportswear company has a branch here in Taiwan.

  5. EY

He is also supposedly dropping by Taiwan while on his way to visiting his sportswear factory in China. Wang tried to get his dad to take Bobby out for dinner, but their times couldn’t match up so that did not happen.

I read that he was very generous towards fan requests for autographs at the airport.

  6. Buddy Biancalana

What no Che shirt for Abreu? C’mon now!

  7. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

ey, the factories in China are closing now till Feb 17 this isn’t a good week for him to visit the factory.

  8. Whitey Fraud

I hate when people drop by to visit and I’m not home!

  9. Whitey Fraud

Er, sushi is Japanese. Taiwan would be Chinese. So maybe some bad dim sum…

  10. OldYanksFans

Aside from the fact that some fans judge Cashman on the outcome of his moves (which is wrong), they fail to understand the unique and difficult circumstances of his job… not only his team being in NY and it being the Yankees, but working with and through, now, 2 generations of Steinbrenners.

Even with all the money the Yanks have to invest in the team, I think VERY few GMs would have even survived what he has, no less continued to put a winning team of the field.

And if he should leave (God, I hope not), I don’t think there are that many who will fight for his old job. While the money and prestige is nice, GM’ing for the Yankees is a totally different universe then the rest of the baseball world.

Personally, I think he should get some soft of congressional metal for ’surviving under fire’.
It’s easy to sit at our PCs and criticize, but Cashman walks the walk. I, for one, especially looking at the recent miracle of our farm system, think he’s doing a great job.

    whitey,

er, the article was only 3 pargraphs, you coudlnt make it all the way to the bottom where it says he will also be visiting japan and china?

    jen,
u think maybe the factory owners might prefer to have the american investor come when the factories are closed? Im sure they’ve got some really great pictures of graetful employees happily stiching sweats together to give him the general idea…

  12. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    Very true Bernie!

  13. Blargh

Heh, watching a documentary on a jeans factory in China makes me feel guilty about capitalism

  14. FI

He visited Japan for some events. So, I think, he visits Taiwan because these countries are very close. Too simple?

  15. i miss bernie

actually i think the factories sign all the contracts for what they are going to make next year at this time, which would make this the time for him to go over there.

  16. Drew

Maybe he pulled a Pascal Perez and got lost on his way to Florida.

keith law’s blurb on joba in his top 100:

    http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb.....otlight%26

really makes you think twice about putting joba in the bullpen. Says he projects as a true #1, if that’s his potential then i think they need to start him for as much of the season as they can.

One of those multi-millionaires who sit in the bullpen needs to step up and be a set-up man.

  18. mel

    International Man of Mystery!

btw. No such thing as bad sushi, unless the seafood is bad. I see that phrase in commercials and it’s such a peeve. You’d have to leave sushi out for 3 days for it to spoil. Only on the mainland. (shaking head)

  19. Tseng

Maybe he’s just on vacation. Taiwan has some nice things for a tourist to see.

  20. OldYanksFans

“…really makes you think twice about putting joba in the bullpen.”

IMB – The Yankees are NOT PUTTING Joba in the BP. He will simply be VISITING for a short time… maybe 4 months. It’s kinda like Bobby. He’s in China now, but he doesn’t live there. It’s only a visit.

In 2008, Joba will probably be limited to 130 IPs in the regular season AND the Yanks are weak in the pen. It’s a temporary situation and probably the best way to work things, all thinks considered.

Everybody, even the dumb ole Yankees FO, knows Joba is s starter.

  21. OldYanksFans

Mel… You think it takes raw fish 3 days to go bad?
Please… don’t recommend any restaurants to me.
(Jeez… even we Haoles know that!)

  22. Whitey Fraud

    Sorry, Bernie.

I’d be worried more about the airline food, myself.

  23. i miss bernie

yeah, mel, i’m in the food buisness, it only takes a millisecond for food to become contaminated, believe me.

  24. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

airline food?? How about the crap that they call food near my office.

  25. Whitey Fraud

I bring my own lunch most of the time. I’m the Friggin’ Gourmet!

(Not to be confused with Edie Gormé.)

  26. i miss bernie

anyway, i’ve been sensing a softening by dave eiland about being flexible about joba. My point is that i dont think he should pitch from the pen at all and some other guys need to step up and become an effective bullpen.

  27. Whitey Fraud

    Or Steve Lawrence.

(What’s up with him singing “Go Away Little Girl” anyway?)

  28. saucy

    “Abreu’s smile” – great name!

does his clothing line have a website? and is he wearing his own gear in that picture?

to me – all sushi is bad!

  29. ummfada

    Igawa’s going to Russia

  30. Nick in SF

Of course Taiwan was a Japanese colony from 1895 to 1945, so hopefully Bobby doesn’t sample any leftover 63-year-old sushi.

Dim Sum is more of a Hong Kong/Cantonese style, but all Chinese food styles are represented in Taiwan. I had some great dim sum in Taipei back in October!

  31. Blargh

“to me – all sushi is bad!”

You got an issue with rice and seaweed?

  32. William

Taiwan is popular for its night market. Especially the one in Shilin in Taipei.

  33. Nick in SF

Oh, in case anyone hasn’t seen it, here is my little photoset of Yankee-related sights in Taiwan from my trip there in October.

  34. Curious George

I read some local news in Taiwan. It’s said that Abreu is taking a “business” trip to Taiwan and China. Abrea is reported to visit some factories in China that manufacture the products of his business and to visit Taiwan for a related purpose.

Since mass media in Taiwan likes to fabricate news stories, I am not sure if the above information is reliable.

Peter, do you have any information about this?

  35. plank

    No love for Korea?

  36. JohnDalie

Actually Bobby Abreu has his personal investment in sports shoes business. It’s not announced yet, but, to Abreu idea, the brand name will be “30/30″, i.e. 30 HR & 30 steals. A genius idea. Go, go, Bobby!!!

  37. RollingWave

Asking Bobby to go 30/30 at this point in his career is probably a bit too much though… but it would be great :P

I don’t think he’ll make it to his factory in China, it’s probably under 10 feet of snow right now. that or the roads / rails that leads to it are.

Not to meantion it’s the Chinese new year. so not going to be many people hanging around to greet him there. (though I guess if it’s only the boss…)
