You’ve probably heard this by now, but the Mets were given two more hours to come to a deal with Johan Santana. The sides now have until 7 p.m.
I can’t imagine it happening, but what if they can’t make a deal? That would be quite a mess.
yes it would
i put this on the last thread, but here it is again:
February 1st, 2008 at 5:24 pm
well he MAY not want to reach free agency for one important reason. he could get injured this year and the big payday goes out the window. that is the one and only bargaining chip the mets have.
Hmmm.. can’t get the money from the mets and wants to be a yankee…. that’s enough reason for me for free agency
Seems like Hank’s the only one that sticks to his deadlines.
wonder what the deal would be for the yankees if the mets could not agree to terms…
dirk
a bag of balls would do
can santana demand a trade to the yanks?
lol
the plot thickens…
As a Yankee fan I hope it falls through
I have said this a few days ago, where I stated that I have a gut feeling that they will fail to sign Johan Santana. I base my predictionon nothing but I have a funny feeling.
the mets are cursed
im sure he can— he can say no to any deal that any team would make to him
that might be why he hasnta greed with the mets yet
This deal will get done but if it didn’t…
That would be interesting.
The Boston papers have already reported that the Red Sox never planned on giving Santana the type of contract he was seeking.
The Sox were expecting that Santana would accept a “discount” to play for a World Series Winner.
Good luck with that one:
“The Sox, who last winter gave Japanese import Daisuke Matsuzaka a six-year deal but cited unique circumstances for doing so, almost certainly would not have offered Santana as many years, or would have proposed a contract well short of $25 million in annual average value. Their strategy, according to sources familiar with their thinking, included a belief that Santana would have accepted less to pitch for a potential perennial World Series contender.”
http://www.boston.com/sports/b.....r_santana/
If they weren’t close to a deal, they wouldn’t have been granted an extension.
This will get done.
If not, I wouldn’t want to be Fred Wilpon tomorrow! lol
Johan is trying to squeeze every dollar he can out of the Mets. I wonder if the Mets will cave. Let’s see if Omar has the cajones to just say no. I’d love to be there when he says “have fun back in Minnesota!”
I imagine the package the Twins get offered next won’t be very much… But will the Twins get another offer? Does anyone want to pay Santana $150 Million? How many $100 million pitchers have worked out? That Kevin Brown guy sure was great! Zito? Hampton? Bueller? Bueller?
freddy coupon will not pay
does Hank have satan’s cell number?
A 2 hour extension means the deal is getting done.
I sure hope not joltin joe. We don’t need to be making deals with that guy
a deal with the devil rodg?
SJ: From the last thread–
Thank you! I wasn’t aware that it tops out at $39 million. I have to wonder though, is it more expensive to insure pro ball players or the likes of Britney Spears/Lohan/etc
The deal will get done because they extended the deadline. If it wasn’t at the brink of completion they wouldn’t ask for another two hours. They could always simply propose a new trade with almost the exact same setup and get another 72 hour window.
If it doesn’t get done in the next two hours, they can just trade the same players again and open another 72 hr window…
Rebecca,
It tops out at 39 million for pitchers only. You can insure position players (depending on their health) for more money.
I explained the reasons why in another post in the last thread.
Yeah joe. Those don’t work out too well. Look at all the movies!!
The Yankees AIN’T paying $150m for Santana.
I doubt they do it even as a Free Agent either.
The Mets will get this done however.
So far, they have offered $152 and it didn’t do it.
They have gone too far to back out. However…
If he does become a FA, the Yankees offer him 6/$120, and explain it probably comes with 3 rings and a better shot at the HOF.
Then Santana can decide what history is worth.
Franky, except when in DIRE need, the Yankees should NEVER outbid anyone else.
Playing in Pinstripes in an honor.
Endorcement dollars are much greater.
If you don’t believe ‘Thank God I’m a Yankee’ then play elsewhere!
CB… that Edes article you linked to has one of the most confusing and poorly written sentences I’ve ever read:
“Werner did not mention it specifically, but the Sox are not unhappy that Santana is not going to the Yankees, who may initially have made the best offer – top pitching prospect Phil Hughes and outfielder Melky Cabrera – but pulled that from the table by the end of the process, general manager Brian Cashman saying he was committed to the team’s youth.”
Okk…
Oh man, just as a Yankee fan, I would LOOOOVEEEEE to hear that it fell though, I would Love to read mets.com blogs just to see the reaction. Imagine having that collapse and then this, ohhhhhhh I’m evil, hhaah.
SJ: Again, that explains a lot! Thank you!
(it’s so true you learn something new every day…)
What the hell is the point of a deadline if the Mets could keep asking for an extention? Jeez 5 should have been the deadline and that’s it. Either you trade him or you don’t!AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
-Pissed of Yankees fan
If they are truly “$20 Million apart”, that should not stop
the Mets ownership from getting this deal done. They have to get Santana to challenge for the NLCS this Season!
Anthony:
The Unit and Schilling deals had extensions as well. It’s not rare and is really just a way to put a time limit to work towards so that agents can’t filibuster at the expense of trading partners and the sport itself.
Seriously, what a joke.
Are deadlines not in place to act as just that, a deadline?
What a bunch of BS.
I had an outside hope that the deal would fail, Johan would elect to play out his contract in Minny, and the Yanks would go after him in Free Agency (if he had a clean bill of health in 08).
Plus, I also just want to see the Mets look like a horse’s a$$.
Uh oh….see you later Melk.
OLDYANKSFAN
Arod just got $275m – $300m.
Giambi 7 years/$120M
Jeter 10 years/$189M
Rivera 3 years/$45M
Posada 4 years/$52.4M
Can we dispense with the privilege nonsense already? Players go to the highest bigger and don’t give the Yankees a discount.
Unless that $218m was paid to hot dog vendors and George Costanza.
John in Ohio,
There is no way the Yankees are going to trade for Santana unless its Kennedy and Melky and thats it.
This extra 2 hours will get the deal done. Its BS still, as are all MLB’s deadlines.
Oh, and I DO NOT advocate a trade for him if this doesn’t get done.
It will, though.
There is no upside for the Mets.
Santana will command also 20% of the team’s payroll.
People are already proclaiming them to be in the WS.
Things can only get worse for the Mets.
This is more of a panic move then the Yankees getting RJ after the collapse of 2004.
I really don’t recall the Yankees giving out discounts. Besides, do you think the Yankees are like the Red Sox who think that deserve to pay less because of who they are?
People who work for successful companies usually get the better pay. The two go hand in hand.
Either way this is a tough one on the Metropolitans. If if falls through they look like idiots and their fans riot. If goes through they pay through the nose and have a large risk exposure with no guaranteed results.
I think the Yankees thought all this through and didn’t want to be placed in the position the Mets are in.
SJ
I remember hearing that Warren Buffett underwrote the insurance on A-Rod’s Texas contract. Does one of Buffett’s companies handle alot of the insurance for ball players or was this a special circumstance because of the size of the contract?
Seriously, what a joke.
“Are deadlines not in place to act as just that, a deadline?
What a bunch of BS.
I had an outside hope that the deal would fail, Johan would elect to play out his contract in Minny, and the Yanks would go after him in Free Agency (if he had a clean bill of health in 08).”
-LMFAO!
I imagine you were as adamanent about MLB guidelines when the Yanks and Randy Johnson requested, and were granted, an extension.
Stop with the whiny sour grapes already.
“This is more of a panic move then the Yankees getting RJ after the collapse of 2004″
I find it difficult to term the Mets deal a “panic move” – getting a two-time 29-year old CY Young Award winner and arguably the best pitcher in MLB.
The Yankees would pony up 6 years/$150 Mil for Santana and the Mets most likely will, too.
Santana will thrive in the inferior NL. He’s a former outfielder and will enjoy batting – and pitching – without a DH.
It is not about privilage. Ask a struggling actor if they would take 1/2 salary to perform on Broadway as opposed to Minn. Monument park and Yankee history DO have value to players. Add that we are a perennial WS contender and the other percs, such as endorcements, that NY brings.
Beltran and Pavano offered 10% discounts to play in NY. I’m sure there have been others. Big George screwed this up by offering inflated contracts, but hopefully with Cashman, we are geting back to homeostasis. as far as:
Arod just got $275m – $300m.
Yes, exeptions will be made for any player projected to hit 800 HRs, or who is widely considered the best player in the game. It is important that Ruth, Joe D. and Mickjey were Yankees. ARod will be on that list.
Giambi 7 years/$120M – A mistake right? By George, not Cashman.
Jeter 10 years/$189M
Rivera 3 years/$45M
Posada 4 years/$52.4M
These 3 are core, homegrown, (hopefully) lifetime Yankees. I have always said that a positive way to use our money is to keep important, historic Yankees on the team, and keep the family together,
Jeter was about to sign for around $12m AAV. Then ARod’s deal, for $25m was announced. Jetes got REAL lucky. We all feel that Po, and especially Mo, are getting more then then are worth, but again, this is family money.
Bernie was overpaided a bit too. But homegrown and lifelong players are a different story.
NYPD,
Please refer to my comments above.
How am I whining? I actually wish the Yankees never traded for Johnson, typical mistake of their 21st century.
This deal amounts to nothing more than we’ve heard before. A deal was reached in principle and only the language of the contract remains.
The Wilpons and Minaya have looked enough like fools without adding to their resume.
The Mets are being fools — the only reason they got Santana for a so-so group of prospects is BECAUSE of the money he wanted. They can’t have it both ways now. You can’t have him for less than the six years you knew he wanted AND not give up anything to get him. You got a sweetheart deal because he wanted to get paid — so pay him and stop fooling around.
Larry,
NYPD is a Sox troll. engage at your own risk.
The Mets dont need this deal. The Mets fans “need” this deal.
This is gonna get done. It makes to much sense not to.
I find it difficult to term the Mets deal a “panic move†– getting a two-time 29-year old CY Young Award winner and arguably the best pitcher in MLB.
The Yankees would pony up 6 years/$150 Mil for Santana and the Mets most likely will, too.
I don’t agree. First, the Mets lost FOUR of their top 7 farmhands on top of paying this massive salary.
I do NOT believe the Sox would get Santana at 6/$150.
I do NOT believe the Yankees would get Santana at 6/$150, unless 2 of the Big 3 looked like flops.
A lot of people thought giving ARod $27.5m was insane. He averages 50% more WinShares then Santana, which would make Santana worth $19m/yr in ARod dollars, who is already THE most expensive player. ARod is less prone to injury (than a pitcher) and fills seats everyday, not every 5th day.
As SJ pointed out, due to insurance limitations, a career ending injury could cost over $100m CASH.
And, for the Yankees, you aren’t even talking about the $60m in tax. Yes, Santana is the best. But even the best has a top price.
And lets not forget then when ARod was making $25m/yr (and delivering 50% more wins then Santana) he was let go, and Texas still had to pay 30% of his salary.
“Larry,
NYPD is a Sox troll. engage at your own risk.”
– Larry, Provincetown Dave is a bitter, bitter fan.
oops…. sorry about all that BOLD. My bad.
A half hour left
Well, a half hour to go.
And then, I expect, another three hour extension, or something of the sort.
Hey, OldYanksFan
A while ago you posted on my blog about some stats you wanted to talk about. Whats up?
NYPD,
I’ll stick with Dave, he has been on here a while.
Just remember, the Yankees are ALWAYS better than the Red Sox. Even if the Sox won 2 in the past 4 years, it took em 86 years to get there. The Yankees have enjoyed mucho success during the Sox’s perpetual loser-dom.
Maybe the Twins’ GM won’t be to eager to grant another extension since he’s been hammered in the press about the trade in the first place. I hope the deal goes through because I don’t want the Yanks back in the hunt – keep the kids!
done deal
Done deal for Santana and Mets oending physical per ESPN.
Thanks Larry. I didn’t say you cant or even shouldn’t debate with him. Just be prepared. So many people argue with the dude again and again and complain about it. If people are going to respond to him, they lose the right to complain about his posts. That’s all.
anybody have the final specs?
7/150 ish?
“NYPD,

– All old news. Last century stuff.
Boston has NY beat in every single category you can drum up.
Sox > Yank$$
Bruins > Rangers & Isles
Pats > jets & giants
Celts > Knicks & Nets
BC > whoever
Romney > Rudy
etc,etc
Now hopefully we can really put the Santana discussions to bed and move on to the Yankees and SPring Training, the last year of the Stadium, the young guns etc
NYPD,
If I cared about Republicans, Hockey, or the NBA, I might react to that, but since I don’t you can keep them all. Hockey? ROMNEY?! Wow. That guy is about as big of a joke as they come.
I’m interested to see the final $$ #’s and whether the Mets or Santana caved.
Johan Santana used a Bic pen to sign his contract…
NYPD,
By the way, if you are in fact NYPD and a Sux fan, you have doubtlessly been plugged up a few times in the station showers by NYPD Yankees fans. Odds are you probably enjoyed it more than they did.
“NYPD,
If I cared about Republicans, Hockey, or the NBA, I might react to that, but since I don’t you can keep them all. Hockey? ROMNEY?! Wow. That guy is about as big of a joke as they come.”
– Point being, right now, Boston is better at everything. Except for crime rates & taxes, New York has a higher one than Boston than that.
Football and baseball were included in there too. Right now we are better in both, but stick with your memeories of past glory, it’s all ya got.
The Bruins are NOT better than the Devils.
Sorry.
NYPD, get over yourself.
Boston has NY beat in every single category you can drum up.
Sox > Yank$$
Bruins > Rangers & Isles
Pats > jets & giants
Celts > Knicks & Nets
BC > whoever
Romney > Rudy
The Red Sox always the underdog who never spends any money and have a long, long history of domination over the Yankees. You`re right
Nobody cares about hockey.
We`ll see Pats versus Giants on Sunday. Wait and see.
THe Celtics were SO much better than the Nets last year and the past few years as swell.
No defense against BC.
Did you miss Hillary Clinton being the favorite for the Democrats and therefore probably the next president?
This is a sports blog anyway. Want to go past sports? No contest.
Boston’s the capitol of sports for now but a few years don’t make up for the past 100.
Anyone have a LINK for the Santana details?
And yes, we can finally STOP TALKING ABOUT JOHAN.
By the way, how much should we be willing to give C.C. in 2009?
“By the way, if you are in fact NYPD and a Sux fan, you have doubtlessly been plugged up a few times in the station showers by NYPD Yankees fans. ”
- You reveal a lot of you and your fellow Yankee fans behaviors here.
Contrary to your fantasies, no I have not.
Anyways, most Yankee fans I come across prefer the Puerto Rican shower, part of that being literal.
Rather than wait forever for NYPD to get over himself… we all need to get over him and stop responding or reading his posts. seems like that would be pretty easy to do, no?
Santana is a Met
Santana is on the New York Mets
“The Bruins are NOT better than the Devils.”
- Devils? LMAO, oh, you mean the HOCKEY team from Newark?
NYPD113th,
Are you really such a loser that you must come on a Yankee fan board constantly and try to bait the posters? I know it’s hard for you, but why don’t you try to post something to engage in intelligent talk otherwise go hang out with your Boston brethren. You’ll enjoy yourself much more lapping up all the Boston smuckiness with your fellow Boston fans.
“Boston’s the capitol of sports for now but a few years don’t make up for the past 100.”
- Right now is all that matters. Boston dominates NY in every single sport, RIGHT NOW.
Lets just let NYPD have his very special little time. After all, he is a very special little person obviously.
NY Times:
The extension alone — an average of $22 million over six years — would make Santana the highest-paid pitcher in baseball, but the Mets are prepared to add a $7 million signing bonus on top of the $13.25 million that Santana is already owed for 2008, potentially bringing the total package to more than $152 million. Santana would be locked up through 2014, when he turns 35.
Ha, i love how clown sox fans win a couple in 100 years and love to rave about how they think their franchise is better.
I read on a mets blog 6/152 plus 7M for this year but no link or backup for that…
The Mets LoHud blog is saying 6 years at $22MM /yr.
“NYPD113th,
Are you really such a loser that you must come on a Yankee fan board constantly and try to bait the posters? I know it’s hard for you, but why don’t you try to post something to engage in intelligent talk otherwise go hang out with your Boston brethren. You’ll enjoy yourself much more lapping up all the Boston smuckiness with your fellow Boston fans.”
- LMAO, yes sir.
Sox get another championship, Mets get Santana, Yanks get outed as ‘roid heads and Morgan Ensberg, I’d be bitter too.
NYPD: Say, what do Red Sox fans think of the Mets anyway?
“Devils? LMAO, oh, you mean the HOCKEY team from Newark?”
So that football team you have up there plays in Boston? No, wait they don’t. Newark is closer to NYC then Foxboro is to Boston. Stop being stupid.
Congrats to the Mets and their fans, Johan is going to be excellent over there.
Add the Mets to the list with the Red Sox, Tigers, Indians, and Dbacks as favs to win it all this year.
““Devils? LMAO, oh, you mean the HOCKEY team from Newark?â€
So that football team you have up there plays in Boston? No, wait they don’t. Newark is closer to NYC then Foxboro is to Boston. Stop being stupid.”
- Sharp as a marble huh Rocco?
It wasn’t the proximaty I was laughing about.
seems like its 6/132 plus 20M for 2008 so 7/152 guaranteed.
lot of money, but i personally think it’s a good deal for them. 1-2 years from now, pitchers will be getting more than that. zambrano just got 18.3M per and he’s no santana. sabathia will get 18-20 i would imagine. salaries are on the way up.
“- LMAO, yes sir.
Sox get another championship, Mets get Santana, Yanks get outed as ‘roid heads and Morgan Ensberg, I’d be bitter too.”
I’m not bitter at all. You come across as being very bitter about the past however. A grown man gloating about how his city is so much better than another city is so childish it’s ridiculous. A grown man coming to a Yank’s blog on a daily basis to troll Yankee fans just makes himself look like he’s a lonely guy. If you really own a bar don’t you have enough real life Yankee fans to taunt?
Hey man, don’t look at me. At least the Devils have won a Cup this millennium. Get back to me when the Bruins do.
OK ladies, I’m out!
Nothin more of a downer than bitter yankee$$ fans on a Friday night.
Thank you again for the brief entertainment. You served you purpose
Congrats again to the Mets fans.
Mr. happy face NYPD113th comes here everyday to argue with people. What a nitwit. I bet his bar is a thriving business, people come from miles around for his personality.
– Point being, right now, Boston is better at everything. Except for crime rates & taxes, New York has a higher one than Boston than that.
Yeah sure. Boston is the boring capital of the world. As cosmopotitan and tolerant as Billings, Montana.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22792627
He has to leave he has a pickled egg delivery tonight.
“- Sharp as a marble huh Rocco?
It wasn’t the proximaty I was laughing about.”
No? You were saying how Boston Hockey is better then NY hockey weren’t you? You forgot to mention the Devils who are a NY area team and are better then the Bruins.
Hey i’m a Rangers fan and i hate the Devils… but they are still a NY team.
*wonders if NYPD was really trying to insult me by calling me a lady*
Rocco: Heh, I am a HUGE Devils fan. Good thing this is a baseball blog.
LOL Rebecca… no worries… i have lots of friends that are Devils fans.
1-0 Rangers!!!
NYPD113th,
You’re really delusional if you think that the Sox > Yankees.
Let’s compare the past 13 years, since it’s been 13 years since the Yankees last missed the playoffs.
Yankees 13 straight playoff appearances, 4 WS titles, 6 WS appearances
Red Sox 7 playoff appearances, 2 WS titles, 2 WS appearances.
Now which one is greater?
Can we ignore nypd already. His posts are cluttering this blog and all he does it bait and piss people off.
I’m taking bets that Johan is the next Hampton. Question regarding Hampton what was his injury status before he stopped getting on the field.
NYPD = Largest of all iceholes….’Nuff said
thank you Jennifer!! I’ve done everything but beg people to ignore that loser.
I mean I looked at the previous entry and someone was going back and forth with him. It is an unhealthy debate, you can’t win against him.
Btw has anyone heard anything about a Giant driving drunk, and being sent home. I heard the story but didn’t hear who it was.
nm found it.
Phoenix, AZ — (Sports Network) – New York Giants defensive end Adrian Awasom was arrested for allegedly driving drunk, according to KNXV-TV in Phoenix.
Officials from the Arizona Department of Public Safety told the station that the 24-year-old Awasom was taken into custody sometime within the last 24 hours.
Awasom was already on injured reserve and not scheduled to play in Super Bowl XLII in Glendale on Sunday.
my bad. i’ll ignore from now on.
Pete,
The 2000 Yankees were not flawless. They were by far the weakest of the Yankees championship teams. For Gods sake, they won only 87 games!
Anybody hear how the Patriots trademarked the phrase, 19-0 Perfect Season?
My prediction is 38-16 Patriots, but I will be pulling big time for the Giants. Hopefully, this Patriots thing will end soon. I’m getting sick of Pete shoving this in our face all the time.
Rebecca,
Who are you endorsing for President?
I hope Santana likes pressure.
I’m betting he’s still great for a while, but both he
and the Mets have an aweful lot riding on this deal.
I’m SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad our team in still intact.
Pressure did you say pressure? He is now expected to not only lead them to a WS but win them one. If he flames out they will boo him worse than they did Carlos Beltran. (for the record I never once booed Alex).
This will be Randy Johnson all over again… Insane expectations! Yea you have an under 4 era with 17 wins, BUT how come you’re not striking out 12 per game?
