He can’t drive 65
Phil Franchise revealed on his blog that he’s dumping No. 65.
No word on what the new number will be. 22 is available again. 11 and 12 are out there, too. I’d go with 19.

Doesn’t he have some fascination with the #5. I have heard 50 mentioned on this blog before.
He could be like David Wells and ask for #3.
suprised if it is close.. hey how did the Pts D stop the Rams in the red zone on 7 straight plays??
I am sure it is just there genous coach!!!!!
It is not like stealing pitch signals, videotaping the walkthru is a bad bad thing..
let’s pray the chowderheads get whiped out, the city deserves it..
this will be the second player who has changed his number when I have the original numbered shirt (cano and now phil.)
damn!
I’m in the same boat as you Lauren. I hope Joba keeps his number.
Since he’s “Phil Franchise,” greatest-thing-ever, why not dust off #16 for him?
Seriously, why not give him #57? That one could be for the Yankees, the Twins, the Mets, and the BoSox.
Lauren…
When Rocket first came to the Yankees, his 22 was unavailable, so his first number was 12. I don’t think he ever wore it in a game, but I rushed to get the jersey and I have a Clemens #12. Pretty kewl.
Phil Phranchise? More like Phil Phailure.
I was getting used to 65 too.
I’d go with 86 – the year Hughes was born. That’d be very cool.
i hate the patriots.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CT9ngRhjQJE
he has said that he likes his number to end in 5…
5 – retired, Joe DiMaggio
15 – retired, Thurman Munson
25 – in use, Jason Giambi
35 – in use, Mike Mussina
45 – in “use”, Carla Pavano
55 – in use, Hideki Matsui
My guess would be 34, because he wore that in the Futures Game
Dan: he could always steal pavano’s, he’s never gonna use it again
Mike:
I’m hoping that Pavano was asked to change number, and actually agreed, seeing as he has no actual use for it.
I would shoot for #6!
I wonder what’s wrong with 65. How ’bout looking at the greatest #s in history? He’d have to beat out Elvin Bethea at #65:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....nt.34.html
Though it could be fun to take on #45:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....nt.14.html
Number 34 would be very hard:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....ent.3.html
if you’re phil and superstitious about #s you’d have to weigh your affinity for the # 5 against the bad karma of using pavano’s 45
what do you guys think?
hey, what does “your comment is awaiting moderation” mean?
Yazman
I don’t know. I got one of those last week while trying to respond to Jack Cafferty on CNN. There weren’t any cuss words or anything like that…
To the group:
What’s the blog with the new Yankee Stadium pictures again??
I think you’re looking for this…
http://slidingintohome.blogspot.com/
See, this is why I bought the t-shirt that just has the NY in the front and no player on the back.
Now no matter who changes his number or who defects, I can’t go wrong!
Try to watch this pregame stuff. Yaaaaawn.
I think I’ll go read the dictionary now.
Agreed 45 wouldn`t be worth prying from Pavano.
Bad karma in 45 is right. Maybe the opposite karma could be attained by reversing those digits to number 54. Last I heard there was a HOF Yank pitcher who wore it and it`s not retired. Phil, are you reading?
NY shouldn`t use number 45 at all for a while. They shouldn`t RETIRE it. It`s not like it`S a number of honor. They just shouldn`t use it for a looong time … symbolic of adopting a philosophy of seeking better results by making wiser and less short-sightedcfront-office decisions overall.
Paint:
Thanks. That’s the one.

i like it!
Chris–
You could be me, you could be doing thesis corrections…
He should ask for 6 and see what they say. lol
Rangers are on NBC
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/s.....fore-XXXVI
No. 19 will always be Fritz Peterson to me, one crazy mofo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritz_Peterson
Pfft, Rangers. GO DEVILS!
19 is unlucky. Rhymes a little too much with a certain potential undefeated record. If only the Giants would win this game… 2004 would be but a break in the wind.
Yazman,
Did you put more than one link in your post?
If it’s awaiting moderation, you’re the only one who can see it.
Myth Busters, did a special on baseball. They might repeat it today since it is a marathon. Roger Clemens was on it.
#19 works for me…
I own an authentic NY Yankee home uniform jersey…from the 2007…Tyler Clippard anybody…courtesy of Steiner…
Yes #19…previously worn by Dave Righetti…Fritz Petersen…also Whitey Ford’s # in his rookie year with the Yanks…Whitey was issued #16 after he rejoined the Yanks following a stint in the military.
Go for 19 Hughesy!!!
where can i get a #19 Clippard Jersey? I want one.
Phil Hughes will take Larry Bowa’s old No. 50.
Jose Molina will give No. 26 to Joba and take another.
End of football numbers except for spring training invitees.
I think Joba said he’s not changing his number.
How about ’57′, Santana’s number, and the measure by which Hughes will be judged?
Derek’s new commercial for Gatorade 2 will be debuting during the Super Bowl.
god this Oreo stuff is cracking me up
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....&NR=1
I know there isn’t going to be any updates today, and yet I still check every 10 minutes…
How many more days?
Good rangers game on… they were down 3-0 and are now winning 4-3
JBRO: Let’s see, 14-3 = 11, but you don’t generally count today, so 10, and then you don’t count the 14th cos that’s day 0, so, 9.
You can handle it.
After what i did, how did you forget me being asscoiated with uniform number 19?????
57 was also the late Steve Howe’s number
Aaron Boone–How’s it feel to be associated with just two things:
A hit off Wakefield and a pick up game of basketball?
One great feat..and one bad foot…
Boston owner John Henry is losing his a$$ …..
http://www.nypost.com/seven/02.....901149.htm
Joba will take Molina’s 26, 2 + 6 = 8
Hughes will take 50, due to him having to have a 5 in his number.
Molina has yet to pick a new number.
I got this off another message board, they didn’t cite a source, so I have no idea if it is true.
That sounds about right
Ozzie Gullen is a jack *ss.
“I’m just so happy he’s out of the (bleeping) American League,” Guillen said in a telephone interview after the trade went down. “This means before the season starts, we don’t already have five losses.”
..but a funny jack*ss
Whoa another jackass
http://www.nydailynews.com/spo.....ports.html
This interview with Phil was taped before the Mitchell report came out, you’d think he’d look it up. Or Whoa what a concept call yes to ask?! Wow!!
anyone else bothered by the fact that fox has to have a pregame show for the non-sports fans and no actual game analysis??
GIANTS SUPERBOWL TIME LET’S WIN IT! EVERYBODY LET’S GO! TONIGHT IS THEIR NIGHT BABY BEAT THE BLEEPING PATS!
dude,
Does it bother you that every newspaper, radio station sends every fool to cover the superbowl. Like why is Kay there, he barely knows baseball, yet they have him there to do shows.
dude: It’s all one big advertisement for American Idol.
Is it really? I’m watching Myth Busters. I hate American Idol. If they are going to show people from the show in the stands, I think I will hurl.
lol i was thinking about that all week. like couldn’t you just do your analysis from home and interview people on the phone, and for the real audio clips have a few guys to record audio clips and a small production crew… the fact that you’re there makes no difference to me. seeing a stadium parking lot in the background on my tv screen makes no difference. listening to someone talk on the radio and say he’s in arizona – i dont really care… its not even the fact that guys that dont know football and cant REALLY analyze it are there.. its the fact that the whole country just needs to say “hi im broadcasting from here” – does that really affect the quality of the broadcast??
lol rebecca – ryan seacrest – like hes ever watched a regular season football game in his life. and all hes doing anyway is talking to actors – that annoying guy – whats his name – samuel jacksoin – hes liek well there were a lot of undefeated teams before – ummm what?
Worse. One’s singing the national anthem.
omg i totally forgot abt that one… but actually ehr father was in the nfl and shes from arizona and its fox so i guess it all fits. but at least shes not singing her hit songs in the middle of the pregame show an hour before the games about to start
From BP unfiltered: For schits and giggles
I know I’m overdue on getting you guys all the PECOTAs, but in the meantime, let’s see what we have Johan Santana doing in Shea Stadium. For reference, I’ve also included our original projection for him in Minnesota.
Team GS W-L IP H BB SO HR ERA SuperVORP
Mets 32 16-8 225.0 184 60 239 25 2.94 56.8 Twins 33 15-9 227.0 197 62 230 25 3.32 55.6
Let’s say the Phil Highes has an averageish year with a 4.32 ERA. Based on the (AL) projection above, that would mean that Santana, compared to Phil, would save us 1 run every 5 games.
ONE RUN EVERY FIVE GAMES
So… what’s that worth?
A 7 year commitment for $150m… plus
A few years (or more) at $10m/yr to replace Melky
Plus 2 others prospects, whom if ONE becomes MLB material, will save a minimum of $50m to replace his position.
I’m guestimating that over 7 years, the Santana trade would have cost us well over $200 million, and with the luxury tex, the real cost would be $280m, over 7 years, or $40m/yr real dollars.
And that $40m/yr buys us… ONE RUN EVERY FIVE GAMES
And that of course assumes that Santana is good for a 3-ish ERA for the NEXT seven years, and Phil is good for a 4-ish ERA for the nect 7 years.
So, aside from Mr. ‘But it’s Freakin Johan Santana’ Fleas, is there anyone who thinks that would have been a SMART deal?
Oops… thats
Team GS W-L IP H BB SO HR ERA SuperVORP
Mets 32 16-8 225.0 184 60 239 25 2.94 56.8

11==Hector Lopez, Buck Showalter, Gooden, Sheff and Lefty Gomez
12==Ron Blomberg, Gil McDougald
19==Bob Turley, Fritz Peterson, Dave Righetti
22==Allie Reynolds, Clemens
The American Idol singing the national anthem(Jordin Sparks) actually grew up in NY. Her father played for the NY Giants so at least there is a connection.
Old Yanks Fan: Check the poll I got up on my blog–the majority of voters are GLAD the Santana deal didn’t go down!
Clemens did start at 12.
12 also was worn by Jim Spencer.
57 reminds me of Dooley Womack.
Hughes 5.00—you only wish.
11= Toby Harrah
12= Wade Boggs
22= Jerry Mumphrey, Robinson Cano
Phil likes the 5′s.
Before Joe DiMaggio, Bob Meusel wore 5.
Before Thurman Munson, 15 was worn by Tommy Henrich and Tom Tresh.
Before Giambi had 25, Joe Pepitone wore it.
Before Mussina had 35, Ralph Houk had it.
Toby Harrah’s last name is also a palindrome.
very good, Buddy…
I try my damnedest to forget Toby Harrah….
Before Giambi Joe Girardi wore 25
Is there a website with who wore each Yankees #?, I tried searching but found nothing.
Buddy B -
Try YankeeNumbers.com. I did a google search on “New York Yankees uniform numbers through the years: and that website came up. It’s not 100% complete, but on a first glance, looks pretty good.
Buddy Biancalana

Before Giambi Joe Girardi wore 25
And Tommy John…
Doreen – I just found the same web site. You can search by player names or uniform number.
OldYankee Fan, yes, as much as I love you, I think the Yankees made a tremendous error in not trading for Santana.
Your argument assume that Santana and Hughes will pitch the same number of innings. They won’t. If Hughes pitches 160 innings, and averages 6 innings a start– something I doubt he”l achieve quite, given his tendency to reach 100 pitches in the 5th inning last year– that would translate into about 26 starts compared to the 33-34 Santana has pitched every year over the last four.
Who makes up the difference for the Yankees? Igawa, Mussina, Karstens, and/or Rasner.
Santana also has averaged about 7 innings per start the last four years. Not something to dismiss lightly with a bullpen riddled with uncertainty, the condition in which the Yankees currently find theirs.
More middle-relief innings in Hughes’ starts means greater chances for runs yielded by the weakest component of every pitching staff.
And since you’re the math person, you tell me, using the Pythagorean won-loss record formula, how many wins will surrendering 35+ less run cost the Yankees.
Just a few less than last year and the Yankees could find themselves home in October.
Somehow I doubt the spread would remain at 1 run a game. Buit
And the difference
Fran -
What did you put into google?
You can sort by column heading, too.
Doreen – I just put in Yankee numbers. Actually a number of sites came up, but this one was first so I went right to it.
Pitchers of Santana’s caliber are available once a decade, if that often.
The last time the team which acquired one– the team that shall remain nameless- went from licking the Yankees shoes within a few years and returning from a 3-0 deficit to win a World Series a few years after that.
The two great prospects that nameless team had to yield were an ex-Yankees prospect the Yankees once thought was an ace 1) Tony Armas, Jr. and 2) The nameless team’s best pitching prospect of that time, Carl Pavano.
If Hughes turns into David Cone over the next 6 years, the I won’t regret passing on Santana.
Until then, every time the name Johan Santana is spoken I’ll wince.
Had to look these up:
11=Lefty Grove & Run, Chucky ,Run as well as Fred “the Chicken ” Stanley
12=Soriano
19=Luis Sojo & Dick Tidrow

Thanks, great site!
What is the EXACT time of kick-off? Anyone know? I have to shower. Enjoy the game everyone.
Kill Schill: I think you might actually be in the minority.
It’s not that the majority of us didn’t want Santana, but that the asking price was too high.
3:35 I believe
First the pre-pre-game show, then the pre-game, now the pre-kickoff, next….the pre-coin-toss show
Buddy B-
You’re quite welcome. I ♡ Google!
So what time does this silly game actually start anyway??????
I think #45 is cursed, Armando Benitez has also worn it along with Cecil Fielder, although Fielder was a pretty decent pickup.
Buddy B-
3:35 pacific time?
I think it is 6:25 our time.
Oh yeah, sorry Pacific time.
Okay – why does Big Blue wear red, white & GRAY?
Thanks Buddy & Fran.
I don’t know…that Tom Brady sure is cute. Love the chin.
Buddy :
Uniform numbers ? All-time roster ?
http://www.ultimateyankees.com
Good job on the anthem!
Chris: Comment of the night!
And you know that they have extended half-time by 15 mintues so that will be about a half hour.
It’s a good thing, Rebecca: if I wasn’t a voice of dissent, I’d start to worry.
thanks for the kick-off time, night all. Enjoy.
The over / under line for the amount of times the word “if” will be used by the Fox broadcast team is set at 336.
Kill-Schill(ing) – “Pitchers of Santana’s caliber are available once a decade, if that often.”
That sentence, and everything in that post, is total irrelevant to the discussion.
HE’S THE BEST PITCHER IN BASEBALL!
HE’S A TRUE ACE!
HE HAS GREAT HAIR!
Yeah…so…. what does that have to do with whether ONE SPECIFIC DEAL is good or not.
Is he worth $30m/yr? $40m/yr? $50m/yr?
Where in the sentance: “Pitchers of Santana’s caliber are available once a decade, if that often.”
can I figure out at what dollar amount/talent amount he’s NOT worth it?
And I am NOT assuming an equal number of innings… not in 2008 and maybe not in 2009. My guess is considering the milage on Santana’s arm, that Phil might pitch more innings in 2010-2014.
Are YOU considering any other year besides 2008?
When Cashman makes a decision, do you think HE should also think a year or ahead?
I’m sure 2008 will be a good year for the Mets.
I’m not as sure about 2011.
And from 2012 on, it could be a disaster.
“If Hughes turns into David Cone over the next 6 years, the I won’t regret passing on Santana.”
As I said in my post, if he is within ONE run of Santana’s (league adjusted) ERA, then getting Santana is NOT worth it.
Again, Hughes does NOT have to be an absolute stud. Phil does NOT have to be Santana, Or Cone (during his good years). He may be, but if he turns into a decent #2 (which means his ERA is around 1 or so more then Santana), keeping him is the correct choice.
Again I ask: Is the dollar amount I posted worth:
One Run every 5 days.
Please answer that question with a Yes or a No.
Great drive by the Giants so far!
That was a fast first quarter.
Doreen, the Giants have been designated the “away” team for this game, so they wear white jerseys. Back in the ’40s or ’50s, I believe the team wore red jerseys for home games, thus the red accents. Plus blue numbers would make them look like the Cowboys. Yuck. Gray pants…well, lots of teams wear them.
Jeter has the worst hair in professional sports
What a catch by Tuma!!
I belive actually that the Giants alternate between white and gray pants.
Hope that interception doesn’t get to Eli. It wasn’t his fault.
3 and out for the Pats is always good though.
Best commercials so far?
Wine and Cheese party, and the Toyota badger commercial.
Why can we hear what the qb’s are saying.
because all brady is saying is Doh’…..
Because of the luxury tax, Santana would cost the Yanks $1.40 to the dollar. Meaning $150m for the Mets translates to $210M for the Yanks. If you are Hal or Ca$h, would you go there, Kill-Schill? I don’t pay pitchers $30M/yr., even if it is Santana.
As for SB42, the Pats look very vulnerable.
I knew Petty would do American Girl. A natural for halftime show.
Dude, what d’ya all think of the oddly-shaped guitar going into the heart like that….
Who are they going to get for half time entertainment when all these guys are no longer to climb the stage? I like Tom Petty, and I like these songs, but who’s the next generation?
Rebecca -
I love the stage design.
Why is Steve Nash doing the half-time show?!?
Doreen,
I’m with you. I think even the middle-age folk enjoy some of the newer, hip music. I want to see The Police one year.
Go Giants,
“Jeter has the worst hair” WTF?!!
That’s like saying Bill Gates is poor and destitute.
I suppose you like the Kevin Youkilis look.
Actually I think the worst hair belongs to Manny, or Colon.
Jeter, himself, thinks he has bad hair. He refers to it as a brillo pad.
Hahaha, I thought the same thing, Rebecca.
Phil,
Naw, your mixed up. That was Randy Moss that referred to his hair as the brillo pad, years ago. Now that Moss has gone to the cornrows it’s a little better, but not much.
Really though, if I went out with the dozens of attractive women that Jeter has, I wouldn’t care if my hair looked like Phyllis Diller’s.
“I hope it’s a good game but I’ll be surprised if it’s close.”
Stick to baseball
this game is a lot closer than i thought it would be
It’s a great game. And it’s gone by FAST, too.
The G-Men seem on a mission. Keep up the pressure.
So much for the blow-out, high-scoring game people everywhere were predicting.
Whatever: No, I am not mixed up. Jeter has said it on YES postgame interviews at least 4 different times.
Well, it certainly hasn’t been a boring game
OMG
Nope, no matter what happens – been one of the best games i’ve seen in a long time.
This is the worst game I’ve ever seen!! AWFUL!!
Wow what a great game!! The Giants ended the perfect season!!!
How’s that arrogance feel now Pete?
Perfect season means nothing!! HAHA!!
Bill ran off the field before the game was over. Get him a box of tissues!!
how about them giants?
Eli MVP!!!
WHOOO! GO BIG BLUE!
(…and this from a Jets fan)
THE G-MEN RULE !!!!!!!!!!!!
HOW ABOUT THOSE GIANTS !!!
Hey Tiki… How do you like me now???
HAHAHAHAHA TAKE NEW ENGLAND!!!
ELI!!!!!!!
Man Pete I had been waiting all the off-season to say one thing while you talk about the Patriots more then the Yankees and baseball and you will throw the “big Three” in my face but…
Patriots lose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dolphins are Perfect and you are not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go back to Boston with your Patriots hooding and talk about the Red Sox!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brady is not Bradsaw or Montana 4 Superbowls for now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
McLovin is out Giants Win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can’t believe the Giants won. So much for that perfect season and another championship for the Boston area!!
Go Boston PatPats ! LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL !
Great game? Check.
Favorable outcome? Check.
Congratulations to the Giants!
18-1
Congratulations to the NY Giants and their fans on a sensational SB. I suspect that there will be a black wreath around the borders of this site, tomorrow.
Tom Brady is overrated, vastly. Lol.
18-1 PWND
Ouch Peter. My condolences.
It was a good game though.
As a lifelong Redskins fan, I have grown up hating the Giants. However, that was some of the best football I have ever seen played. They schooled the Patriots, period, and deserved to win.
Sorry, Pete.
Too bad New England.
Like I told you ALL…ALL ALONG…..CHOKE ON IT PATSIES….THE GIANTS SCHOOLED YOUR @$$ !!!
Hey…where is the NYPD ICEHOLE WHEN YOU NEED HIM !….SO FLIPPIN’ SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET !!!
Anybody going to the parade on Tuesday?
Pete,
Care to make any more predictions??????!!!!!!!!!!!
Didn’t think so.
Anyone remembers exactly what scores that the Prophet Plaxico predicted days ago?
Little Brother shocks and awes!
Cheatriots lose! Cheatriots lose!
BIGGEST UPSET EVER!
NEW YORK BABY!
ELI MANNING!
WOO!
Just once wouldn’t it be nice to acknowledge that the Giants play in NEW JERSEY!
GREAT.
NYPD113th, WHERE ARE YOU?. PLEASE NO SUICIDE. TAKE IT LIKE A MAN!!!!
“For all the Giants fans for years at Giants Stadium and at Yankee Stadium…!” WE got in the Super Bowl! Way to work in the Yankees when Boston loses. They just said it.
NYPD113th, WHERE ARE YOU?. PLEASE NO SUICIDE. TAKE IT LIKE A MAN!!!!
Congratulations to all the Giants fans. They played great.
wow, it’s been a long time since I was glued to a football game (probably since the days of Cowboys-Niners-Packers rivalry). What a great game.
I didn’t like the fact that Belichick left the field without congratulating. Such a sour loser. It wasn’t like officiating went against him, either.
Amazing game, and an unbelievable win. Congrats to the Giants and their true fans, as I am a complete bandwagon Giants fan, haha.
10-4 nypd113th, do you copy?
Abe,
You’re wrong. Belichik went directly over to Coughlin while the crowds were on the field before the end of the game. Then he left before they cleared the field.
Can anyone tell me where I can find the 19-0 Perfect Season book. I’d love to get one.
abe,
No offense, but are you sniffing glue? Belichick went across the field and gave Coughlin a hug. Of course he did it before the final play. He learned that trick from the 3rd Baseman.
Does anyone if Belichick stopped running after he got off the field… he may be running all the way back to New England!!!
Oops. I forgot. That was Scott Boras.
Figures. Football and Arod still gets mention.
*rolls eyes*
Where’s Pete crying his eyes out in Arizona!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where will the Parade be?
Hello all. That was so sweet! Who would have thought the Giants could hold the Patriots to 14 points! Outstanding!
I personally think this was a knockout punch to Boston and an equalizer for the 2004 Yankee disaster. Title-town, your name is East Rutherford!
BAM!!!!! Only Miami and Arsenal are undefeated!!!!
Ouch, Pete!!! What a great game though. Congrats Giants!!! Thanks for winning one for New York!!!
Jets fan here, but as a New England resident I root for NY sports. Congrats to Giants fans!
It has been totally depressing up here for about 4 months. These fans would have been totally insufferable if they achieved the perfect season. Thank you Giants!
Their going crazy in Times Square on the streets.
sorry Pete!! GO GIANTS!!
oh and 11 more days until pitchers and catchers!!
Like I argued, Old Yankees Fan, I don’t subscribe to your assumption that Santana and Hughes will pitch the same number of innings.
They won’t. If Hughes pitches 160 innings, and averages 6 innings a start– something I doubt heâ€l achieve quite, given his tendency to reach 100 pitches in the 5th inning last year– that would translate into about 26 starts compared to the 33-34 Santana has pitched every year over the last four.

And since you’re the math person, you tell me, using the Pythagorean won-loss record formula, how many wins will surrendering 35+ less run cost the Yankees.
Just a few less than last year and the Yankees could find themselves home in October.”
Furthermore, Santana’s money doesn’t unnerve me in the least because the Yankees payroll loses $80 million at the end of this year and $26 million more after 2009.
And by the way, as Keynes once said, “In the long-run were all dead” so NO, I’m not willing to sacrifice what I assure today on a gamble of what I may or may not occur tomorrow.
By 2010 or 2011 or whenever year you think HUghes will pay dividens, Rivera will have retired, Posada won’t be catching, Jeter probably will have moved to another position, A-Rod won’t be hitting 50 HRs a season, etc.
The Yankees need to win NOW while these guys are still productive. So yes, I think Johan Santana and Pedro, before him are worth the money. By the 5th year, inflation will have reduced Johan’s $25 MILLION to reasonable sum anyway.
They should make Giambi hand it over. Wouldn’t that be a slap for being an overpaid bench player?
according to Majestic’s website, if you shop for a Phil Hughes jersey, it comes up with #34 …for what it’s worth.
I actually almost want Hughes to ask for Pavano’s No. 45. I think Pavano should give the number to him.
According to Hughes’ blog today, he asked Sean Henn for his number, 34, and Henn agreed…..not official yet.
Will is right. Hughes stated in his comments (http://philhughes.wordpress.co...../#comments) that Sean Henn agreed to give him his number, #34.
“3+4=7, my Mom’s favorite number, and 34 was the number of my favorite pitcher growing up, Nolan Ryan”
Majestic Athletics: http://store.majesticathletic......ughes.html
The new Hughes jersey is $100. I wonder how much last year’s Henn jersey was. If you bought the same #34 jersey which belonged to Henn last year was it cheaper? LOL.
