He can’t drive 65

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Feb 03, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Phil Franchise revealed on his blog that he’s dumping No. 65.

No word on what the new number will be. 22 is available again. 11 and 12 are out there, too. I’d go with 19.

Doesn’t he have some fascination with the #5. I have heard 50 mentioned on this blog before.

  2. Thurman February 3rd, 2008 at 12:52 pm

He could be like David Wells and ask for #3.

  3. stuart February 3rd, 2008 at 12:54 pm

suprised if it is close.. hey how did the Pts D stop the Rams in the red zone on 7 straight plays??

I am sure it is just there genous coach!!!!!

It is not like stealing pitch signals, videotaping the walkthru is a bad bad thing..

let’s pray the chowderheads get whiped out, the city deserves it..

  4. Lauren February 3rd, 2008 at 12:58 pm

this will be the second player who has changed his number when I have the original numbered shirt (cano and now phil.)
    damn!

  5. THU February 3rd, 2008 at 1:01 pm

I’m in the same boat as you Lauren. I hope Joba keeps his number.

  6. Mark Alan February 3rd, 2008 at 1:04 pm

Since he’s “Phil Franchise,” greatest-thing-ever, why not dust off #16 for him?

Seriously, why not give him #57? That one could be for the Yankees, the Twins, the Mets, and the BoSox.

  7. Mark Alan February 3rd, 2008 at 1:06 pm

    Lauren…

When Rocket first came to the Yankees, his 22 was unavailable, so his first number was 12. I don’t think he ever wore it in a game, but I rushed to get the jersey and I have a Clemens #12. Pretty kewl.

  8. Hughes5.00 February 3rd, 2008 at 1:17 pm

Phil Phranchise? More like Phil Phailure.

  9. PaintTheBlack23 February 3rd, 2008 at 1:20 pm

I was getting used to 65 too.
I’d go with 86 – the year Hughes was born. That’d be very cool.

  11. Dan February 3rd, 2008 at 1:34 pm

he has said that he likes his number to end in 5…

    5 – retired, Joe DiMaggio
    15 – retired, Thurman Munson
25 – in use, Jason Giambi
35 – in use, Mike Mussina
45 – in “use”, Carla Pavano
55 – in use, Hideki Matsui

My guess would be 34, because he wore that in the Futures Game

  12. Mike February 3rd, 2008 at 1:37 pm

Dan: he could always steal pavano’s, he’s never gonna use it again

  13. Dan February 3rd, 2008 at 1:46 pm

    Mike:

I’m hoping that Pavano was asked to change number, and actually agreed, seeing as he has no actual use for it.

  14. Bomber11 February 3rd, 2008 at 1:47 pm

    I would shoot for #6!

  15. Yazman February 3rd, 2008 at 1:48 pm

I wonder what’s wrong with 65. How ’bout looking at the greatest #s in history? He’d have to beat out Elvin Bethea at #65:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....nt.34.html

Though it could be fun to take on #45:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....nt.14.html

Number 34 would be very hard:

if you’re phil and superstitious about #s you’d have to weigh your affinity for the # 5 against the bad karma of using pavano’s 45

    what do you guys think?

  23. Ranting Guy February 3rd, 2008 at 2:11 pm

Agreed 45 wouldn`t be worth prying from Pavano.

Bad karma in 45 is right. Maybe the opposite karma could be attained by reversing those digits to number 54. Last I heard there was a HOF Yank pitcher who wore it and it`s not retired. Phil, are you reading?

NY shouldn`t use number 45 at all for a while. They shouldn`t RETIRE it. It`s not like it`S a number of honor. They just shouldn`t use it for a looong time … symbolic of adopting a philosophy of seeking better results by making wiser and less short-sightedcfront-office decisions overall.

19 is unlucky. Rhymes a little too much with a certain potential undefeated record. If only the Giants would win this game… 2004 would be but a break in the wind.

    #19 works for me…

I own an authentic NY Yankee home uniform jersey…from the 2007…Tyler Clippard anybody…courtesy of Steiner…

Yes #19…previously worn by Dave Righetti…Fritz Petersen…also Whitey Ford’s # in his rookie year with the Yanks…Whitey was issued #16 after he rejoined the Yanks following a stint in the military.

    Go for 19 Hughesy!!!

  36. Rocco February 3rd, 2008 at 3:32 pm

  37. Victor the Predictor February 3rd, 2008 at 3:44 pm

Phil Hughes will take Larry Bowa’s old No. 50.

Jose Molina will give No. 26 to Joba and take another.

End of football numbers except for spring training invitees.

  60. dude February 3rd, 2008 at 5:17 pm

lol i was thinking about that all week. like couldn’t you just do your analysis from home and interview people on the phone, and for the real audio clips have a few guys to record audio clips and a small production crew… the fact that you’re there makes no difference to me. seeing a stadium parking lot in the background on my tv screen makes no difference. listening to someone talk on the radio and say he’s in arizona – i dont really care… its not even the fact that guys that dont know football and cant REALLY analyze it are there.. its the fact that the whole country just needs to say “hi im broadcasting from here” – does that really affect the quality of the broadcast??

  64. OldYanksFans February 3rd, 2008 at 5:24 pm

From BP unfiltered: For schits and giggles
I know I’m overdue on getting you guys all the PECOTAs, but in the meantime, let’s see what we have Johan Santana doing in Shea Stadium. For reference, I’ve also included our original projection for him in Minnesota.

Team GS W-L IP H BB SO HR ERA SuperVORP
    Mets 32 16-8 225.0 184 60 239 25 2.94 56.8 Twins 33 15-9 227.0 197 62 230 25 3.32 55.6

Let’s say the Phil Highes has an averageish year with a 4.32 ERA. Based on the (AL) projection above, that would mean that Santana, compared to Phil, would save us 1 run every 5 games.

    ONE RUN EVERY FIVE GAMES
    So… what’s that worth?
    A 7 year commitment for $150m… plus
A few years (or more) at $10m/yr to replace Melky
Plus 2 others prospects, whom if ONE becomes MLB material, will save a minimum of $50m to replace his position.

I’m guestimating that over 7 years, the Santana trade would have cost us well over $200 million, and with the luxury tex, the real cost would be $280m, over 7 years, or $40m/yr real dollars.

And that $40m/yr buys us… ONE RUN EVERY FIVE GAMES
And that of course assumes that Santana is good for a 3-ish ERA for the NEXT seven years, and Phil is good for a 4-ish ERA for the nect 7 years.

So, aside from Mr. ‘But it’s Freakin Johan Santana’ Fleas, is there anyone who thinks that would have been a SMART deal?

  65. OldYanksFans February 3rd, 2008 at 5:25 pm

  79. Kill-Schill(ing) February 3rd, 2008 at 5:53 pm

OldYankee Fan, yes, as much as I love you, I think the Yankees made a tremendous error in not trading for Santana.

Your argument assume that Santana and Hughes will pitch the same number of innings. They won’t. If Hughes pitches 160 innings, and averages 6 innings a start– something I doubt he”l achieve quite, given his tendency to reach 100 pitches in the 5th inning last year– that would translate into about 26 starts compared to the 33-34 Santana has pitched every year over the last four.

Who makes up the difference for the Yankees? Igawa, Mussina, Karstens, and/or Rasner.

Santana also has averaged about 7 innings per start the last four years. Not something to dismiss lightly with a bullpen riddled with uncertainty, the condition in which the Yankees currently find theirs.

More middle-relief innings in Hughes’ starts means greater chances for runs yielded by the weakest component of every pitching staff.

And since you’re the math person, you tell me, using the Pythagorean won-loss record formula, how many wins will surrendering 35+ less run cost the Yankees.

Just a few less than last year and the Yankees could find themselves home in October.

Somehow I doubt the spread would remain at 1 run a game. Buit

    And the difference

What did you put into google? :)

Doreen – I just put in Yankee numbers. Actually a number of sites came up, but this one was first so I went right to it.

  82. Kill-Schill(ing) February 3rd, 2008 at 6:00 pm

Pitchers of Santana’s caliber are available once a decade, if that often.

The last time the team which acquired one– the team that shall remain nameless- went from licking the Yankees shoes within a few years and returning from a 3-0 deficit to win a World Series a few years after that.

The two great prospects that nameless team had to yield were an ex-Yankees prospect the Yankees once thought was an ace 1) Tony Armas, Jr. and 2) The nameless team’s best pitching prospect of that time, Carl Pavano.

If Hughes turns into David Cone over the next 6 years, the I won’t regret passing on Santana.

Until then, every time the name Johan Santana is spoken I’ll wince.

  101. Kill-Schill(ing) February 3rd, 2008 at 6:26 pm

It’s a good thing, Rebecca: if I wasn’t a voice of dissent, I’d start to worry.

thanks for the kick-off time, night all. Enjoy.

  102. Vigorish Vic February 3rd, 2008 at 6:27 pm

The over / under line for the amount of times the word “if” will be used by the Fox broadcast team is set at 336.

  103. OldYanksFans February 3rd, 2008 at 6:40 pm

Kill-Schill(ing) – “Pitchers of Santana’s caliber are available once a decade, if that often.”
That sentence, and everything in that post, is total irrelevant to the discussion.
HE’S THE BEST PITCHER IN BASEBALL!
    HE’S A TRUE ACE!
    HE HAS GREAT HAIR!
Yeah…so…. what does that have to do with whether ONE SPECIFIC DEAL is good or not.

    Is he worth $30m/yr? $40m/yr? $50m/yr?
Where in the sentance: “Pitchers of Santana’s caliber are available once a decade, if that often.”
can I figure out at what dollar amount/talent amount he’s NOT worth it?

And I am NOT assuming an equal number of innings… not in 2008 and maybe not in 2009. My guess is considering the milage on Santana’s arm, that Phil might pitch more innings in 2010-2014.

Are YOU considering any other year besides 2008?
When Cashman makes a decision, do you think HE should also think a year or ahead?

I’m sure 2008 will be a good year for the Mets.
I’m not as sure about 2011.
And from 2012 on, it could be a disaster.

“If Hughes turns into David Cone over the next 6 years, the I won’t regret passing on Santana.”

As I said in my post, if he is within ONE run of Santana’s (league adjusted) ERA, then getting Santana is NOT worth it.

Again, Hughes does NOT have to be an absolute stud. Phil does NOT have to be Santana, Or Cone (during his good years). He may be, but if he turns into a decent #2 (which means his ERA is around 1 or so more then Santana), keeping him is the correct choice.

Again I ask: Is the dollar amount I posted worth:
    One Run every 5 days.
Please answer that question with a Yes or a No.

  104. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! February 3rd, 2008 at 6:40 pm

Great drive by the Giants so far!

  105. Fran February 3rd, 2008 at 7:01 pm

That was a fast first quarter.

  106. Skippy February 3rd, 2008 at 7:03 pm

Doreen, the Giants have been designated the “away” team for this game, so they wear white jerseys. Back in the ’40s or ’50s, I believe the team wore red jerseys for home games, thus the red accents. Plus blue numbers would make them look like the Cowboys. Yuck. Gray pants…well, lots of teams wear them.

  114. Mike S. February 3rd, 2008 at 8:05 pm

Because of the luxury tax, Santana would cost the Yanks $1.40 to the dollar. Meaning $150m for the Mets translates to $210M for the Yanks. If you are Hal or Ca$h, would you go there, Kill-Schill? I don’t pay pitchers $30M/yr., even if it is Santana.

As for SB42, the Pats look very vulnerable.

I knew Petty would do American Girl. A natural for halftime show.

Like I argued, Old Yankees Fan, I don’t subscribe to your assumption that Santana and Hughes will pitch the same number of innings.

Just a few less than last year and the Yankees could find themselves home in October.”

Furthermore, Santana’s money doesn’t unnerve me in the least because the Yankees payroll loses $80 million at the end of this year and $26 million more after 2009.

And by the way, as Keynes once said, “In the long-run were all dead” so NO, I’m not willing to sacrifice what I assure today on a gamble of what I may or may not occur tomorrow.

By 2010 or 2011 or whenever year you think HUghes will pay dividens, Rivera will have retired, Posada won’t be catching, Jeter probably will have moved to another position, A-Rod won’t be hitting 50 HRs a season, etc.

The Yankees need to win NOW while these guys are still productive. So yes, I think Johan Santana and Pedro, before him are worth the money. By the 5th year, inflation will have reduced Johan’s $25 MILLION to reasonable sum anyway.

  185. Jeff February 4th, 2008 at 5:41 am

They should make Giambi hand it over. Wouldn’t that be a slap for being an overpaid bench player?

  186. Derek February 4th, 2008 at 12:45 pm

  187. Paul Fiore February 4th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
