Bruney agrees to deal

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Feb 05, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees signed Brian Bruney for one year and $725,000, avoiding arbitration.

Bruney had been seeking $845,000 and the Yankees were offering $640,000. The only unsigned Yankees is now Chien-Ming Wang. His arbitration hearing is reportedly scheduled for Feb. 15 in St. Petersburg, Fla.

It’s likely the Yankees willcome to some sort of agreement with Wang before then. They are only $600,000 apart.

I know this is off topic, but what the heck is going on with Don Mattingly’s wife? She looks absolutely looney in that mug shot. Can you imagine him being the mgr having to go through all of this? Yikes!

  2. Bronx Liaison February 5th, 2008 at 4:57 pm

Ahh.. The Bru Crew is back for another year of fastballs and free-passes. If Eiland can get Bruney to actually place a bit more value on location over velocity he might be able to yield consistently good results. As a scrapheap pickup, he gave an outstanding return before quickly regressing into the player he had been criticized for.

CMW hearing seems more a formality than anything else, though I’m sure he’s got some jealous eyes for Cano’s new deal. Then again Wang has been nothing short of unbelievable regarding off the field issues. He just wants to win and certainly redeem himself for a horrid postseason.

  3. Baseballs February 5th, 2008 at 5:03 pm

Only $600,000 apart… let that sink in to average Joe.

  4. saucy February 5th, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Laura, have you ever seen a flattering mugshot?

  5. Whitey Fraud February 5th, 2008 at 5:09 pm

I’ve got a couple of bucks in my pocket. Come on, people: let’s kick in for CMW!

Pete’s got 600k laying around in his sock drawer, right?

  6. Ken February 5th, 2008 at 5:15 pm

    Bruney…Great.

My drunken grandfather throws more strikes than Bruney.

All joking aside…Atleast we know we have that guy who can come in…in the 7th and walk a batter for us.

  7. Blargh February 5th, 2008 at 5:17 pm

Go fig, 600k is a bit over 50% more than the minimum yearly salary for Major League service (390k in 2008, 400k in 2009 and 2010)

Random fact while perusing minimum salaries: the minimum salary for Minor League service, provided that you have at least one day of Major League service OR signed a 2nd/3rd/subsequent Major League contract, is 62,500$ in 2008.
If you’re only on your first Major League contract and haven’t had any Major League service, then it’s 31,250$ in 2008.

Perhaps I’m not getting my terminology right, but I’m not seeing a section for those players who only have minor league contracts…or I’m looking in the wrong area, since this is the CBA for the majors.

So does Igawa, for that matter.

    …Dang, I missed a lot today.

    Stupid French sailors and syphillis.

(Seriously, that’s what we talked about in class today.)

  16. Blargh February 5th, 2008 at 6:14 pm

So what gets added to the list of discussion killers; the French, sailors, STDs, or combinations of them?

  17. S.o.S.27 February 5th, 2008 at 6:17 pm

If we’re comparing Igawa to Pavano. Igawa having as many starts in one year than the 3 that Pavano has. If I was Igawa.I think I would ask for a raise. Rightfully so. Pavano has set the minor league bar high. Inflation at its best.

  18. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! February 5th, 2008 at 6:19 pm

    Blargh: Who knows?

  19. mel February 5th, 2008 at 6:33 pm

Whoa! Not a single comment about Bruney.

I’ll give it a go. I hope Bruney returns to ’06 end of the season form. He went out there and just threw the ball. I hope he keeps his head screwed on straight because Girardi won’t have patience for that crap.

  20. whozat February 5th, 2008 at 6:42 pm

“I hope Bruney returns to ‘06 end of the season form”

I have bad news…2007 WAS his 2006 form. It was just that batters realized they didn’t really need to swing unless he grooved one.

He gave these BS excuses that Torre just didn’t understand the way that he (or Kyle) pitched…that they’d rather walk a guy than give up a homer. Ok, fine…but, hey, Brian…did you realize that MAYBE by locating your pitches better you’d wind up having to choose between walking a guy a grooving a fastball a LOT less often?

  21. Joe from Long Island February 5th, 2008 at 6:48 pm

Whatever is the story with Bruney, I just hope he gets his act straightened out for us. When he’s right, he’s a weapon. Whether it’s Joe G, Dave Eiland, Mo, or the moment, I just want him to get it together for the WHOLE season, and be one of the group that spares our starters and Mo.

Is that too much to ask?

  22. S.o.S.27 February 5th, 2008 at 6:57 pm

I just hope he doesnt throw chairs in the clubhouse anymore. I think Girardi would kick his a$$ for a reaction like that.

  23. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! February 5th, 2008 at 7:08 pm

Bruney….ehm. Yeah. That thing about if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say it at all?

I’m sure he’s a very decent human being, minus some chair incidents.

  24. Whatevered February 5th, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Wang might have a 600,000 with the yankees but he saw Cano get a nice contract why won’t he demand some kind of contract maybe four years with an option by the yankees for another two. Sounds like Cano’s contract, well it is but either pay the 600,000 or give a contract or go to court. Your choice (That’s what I would say in his position).

  25. Alan February 5th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

Bruney and others on the spring training bubble will be given until March 20 to show their worth or be part of a late March deal in the final shaping of rosters.

  26. Vin February 5th, 2008 at 7:46 pm

From the link that Buddy Biancalana posted…

“Of the 27 players to reach 3,000, only Dave Winfield and Rickey Henderson were Yankees — and both spent the majority of their careers with other clubs.”

I guess I knew that, but it really is interesting.

  27. McLovin February 5th, 2008 at 7:49 pm

DErek Jeter will not come close to Pete Rose record in hits.He will hit 3,000 but thats it.

Ah my first love baseball. Time to get back together. After attending the Giants Rally in the Meadowlands today, my football rooting season has come to its picture perfect ending. I actually liked the rally much better than the parade I taped on TV. The crowds were louder, Tyree held the football to his head, lots of NJ celebration (at the expense of NYC) and just genuine excitement. Anyone else attend the rally?

  31. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Save the Three Musketeers! February 5th, 2008 at 8:03 pm

  33. Y-Guy February 5th, 2008 at 8:05 pm

whatevered, cmw can’t ‘demand a contract’ because he saw cano get one. he is not a free agent. he has no leverage at all.

  34. Y-Guy February 5th, 2008 at 8:08 pm

i didnt vote today cause pa doesnt vote for another month. they are gonna be coming here promising everything since we will be one of the last decent sized states to hole a primary

  35. jessica(Let's Go Yankees) February 5th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

Wang told Taiwanese media before he left Taiwan for this contract issue. Wang feels happy for Cano. Only thing he care now is building up strength and endurance for new season. The rest of issues he just let his agent handle. Basically, he said he didn’t care. Of course, He said it’s nice to have contract on hand, but contract just add sort of protection. That’s all. It won’t effect his goal for new season which is the same every year: Don’t get hurt and be able to pitch the whole season.

  61. Drive 4-5 February 5th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

I have one comment on the Bruney signing…Why?

By the end of last season he was petulant jerk. He’d walk the 1 or 2 batters he was in there to face and not even look at Torre.

  62. MikeEff-Shelley at First February 5th, 2008 at 10:30 pm

drive: i completely agree with you…i can’t stand bruney. to put it politely, he’s a jackass

BUT…if the new coaches can get him to get outs instead of walks…then that would be awesome. right?

  63. Buddy Biancalana February 5th, 2008 at 10:31 pm

Bruney has a great arm, Girardi must have faith in him like he does with Farnsworth. I think it’s at least worth a shot to see if Giardi can get through to those guys.

  64. Clare February 5th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

If somebody who paid me $20M told me to shave my face it definitely wouldn’t bother me.

BTW, most women like the clean-shaved look. You have to be really hot (like a model) to pull off the stubble look.

  74. Old Ranger February 5th, 2008 at 11:17 pm

Bruney was good until joe took him out in one game. He came in and walked the first batter, Joe took him out. There is a story behind it though. Two games in a row the bull pen walked us into a loss. The next game, Bruney walks the first batter up…Joe pulls him. After that it was all down hill. When you pitch IN FEAR you can’t pitch at all…everything steam rolled from there.

Couldn’t vote today in NY, out of the state…back home in Nebraska. 27/08.

  81. susan mullen February 6th, 2008 at 12:05 am

I just looked up Brian Bruney’s game logs for 2007, trying to find the one day in which Joe Torre supposedly ruined this delicate flower. Nothing really stood out. Mid season Bruney walked 2 batters in 2 consecutive appearances (separated by a couple of days). One day late in the season he pitched one out but gave up 3 walks. Relief pitchers are impossible to come by, so I’m glad to have just about anyone. The myth of Torre making some whimpy pitcher “afraid” is mainly a story line put forth by Michael Kay and certain others for something to say. If Bruney couldn’t pitch maybe he had other problems. The team had very little starting pitching, period. Torre did what he could last year and ended up with a much better record than anyone expected.

  82. Old Ranger February 6th, 2008 at 12:23 am

    Susan… You are right.
Torre did as good as could be expected, I’m not saying he didn’t. There were many problems with the team let alone the pitching staff. And the only stores we get are those we get from people such as Pete, Kay etc. Joe G. has faith in his pitching coach and in himself, to stick up for Fansy, Bruney. Let us all hope he is right. 27/08

  83. Olde Town Glory February 6th, 2008 at 12:53 am

You can never have too many relievers. Anyone else remember when Yankees fans were loving him after his 2006 season in which he had an ERA of 0.87 with a K/9 of 10.89.

I wish I could have been at that Munson dinner. Seemed like a nice place to be.

  85. Chris February 6th, 2008 at 1:58 am

    O.k. lemme get this straight:

The locks after Mo are Kyle Farnsworth ($5.75M in the final year of his three-year contract), LaTroy Hawkins ($3.75M for 2008 only) and Brian Bruney ($725K for 2008 only). Then the Yanks are relying on kids with little to no M.L.B. experience to fill the final three slots (assuming an expected 7-man bullpen) AND be M.L.B. competent. Kei Igawa has to be in the mix cuz he’s making $4M per. That’s a bad bullpen after Mo thus a bad job by Cashman, folks. Then again, he can’t develop a reliever from the farm system to save his life and his only really good reliever signing was Tom Gordon who unfortunately wilted in the postseason. Tom Gordon now is better than Farnsworth, Hawkins, or Bruney.

Let’s go back to the recent championship years, shall we?

    Mo, Nelson, Stanton, Mendoza, Grimsley

The ONLY guy out of the five Cashman brought in was Grimsley who as you can see is last listed cuz he was the least of them.

Farsnworth, Hawkins, or Bruney would be at best #6 on the depth chart after Grimsley, and they’re expected to be the #2-4 in any order this year.

    Again, awful job by Cashman.

  86. Chris February 6th, 2008 at 2:11 am

Here’s what Cashman should’ve had in the after-Mo 2008 Yanks bullpen besides the untradeable $5.75M Farnsworth (who you grin and bear):

Troy Percival signed before Mo re-signed.

Jeremy Affeldt and Ron Mahay signed as the primary and secondary lefties, respectively.

A lock from the farm system I call “F.S.L.”

Whoever wins a slot in spring training I call “T.B.D.”

There you go: Mo, Percival, Affeldt, Mahay, Farnsworth, F.S.L., T.B.D.

DON’T tell me that isn’t better than Mo, Hawkins, Bruney, Farnsworth, a wing, a prayer, and a lucky coin. It is.

DON’T tell me Affeldt and/ or Mahay would’ve been “too much money” when the Yanks just threw $3.75M at Hawkins and another $725K at Bruney and are willing to pay Morgan Ensberg minimum $1.75 and maximum $4M to be the backup 1B/3B.

  87. Y-Guy February 6th, 2008 at 7:43 am

PERCIVAL! you gotta be joking right? Mr. DL?

  88. hmmm (17-14*) February 6th, 2008 at 9:16 am

“The locks after Mo are Kyle Farnsworth ($5.75M in the final year of his three-year contract), LaTroy Hawkins ($3.75M for 2008 only) and Brian Bruney ($725K for 2008 only). ”

Who said Bruney was a “lock”? he isn’t. far from it. he’s competing just like everyone else for a spot. he had to settle for a contract because he has the service time, but the yankees won’t hesitate to drop him if he doesn’t perform.

since you can’t grasp that basic concept, i don’t see why i should take the rest of your inane drivel seriously.

  89. hmmm (17-14*) February 6th, 2008 at 9:24 am

“DON’T tell me Affeldt and/ or Mahay would’ve been “too much money” when the Yanks just threw $3.75M at Hawkins and another $725K at Bruney and are willing to pay Morgan Ensberg minimum $1.75 and maximum $4M to be the backup 1B/3B.”

also, the only way Ensberg will make $4M is if he becomes the STARTING 1Bman, since he needs 525 ABs to make that money. there is no situation where he can make $4M as a backup.

just another one of those pesky “facts” that ruin your arguments.

  90. Y's Guy February 6th, 2008 at 9:47 am

there’s a reason affeld and percival are on thier 4th teams in 4 years.

  91. hmmm (17-14*) February 6th, 2008 at 9:59 am

Percival is good friends with the Devil Rays manager. he took LESS money to sign there, because that’s where he WANTED to go.

Affelt signed with the Reds because he was offered a spot in the Reds’ STARTING rotation. this was not something the Yankees could offer him.

    also, he isn’t very good.

this notion that the Yankees can simply MAKE players sign with them is silly.

  92. Old Ranger February 6th, 2008 at 10:11 am
