Mr. Clemens goes to Washington

capt832e8303d78946e195a505681c40a26fcongress_baseball_dcsa103.jpgRoger Clemens arrived at the Washington offices of the Eveything Else In The Country Is Great, Let’s Talk To Baseball Players Committee today to give his deposition.

The Rocket didn’t speak to reporters but enjoyed a nice big cup of tea. At least we hope that’s a nice big cup of tea.

Figure on Clemens coming out in a little while, not answering questions again then issuing a statement via his lawyers that he answered all the questions put to him.

Clemens might actually answer the questions but the reporters will have to wait till the 13th.

  2. Mike February 5th, 2008 at 11:57 am

Rocket is busting out of that suit.

  3. RonH February 5th, 2008 at 12:06 pm

I’d say that’s an older suit or Rocket’s ego couldn’t bring him to buy the next size he needed.

  4. Andrea February 5th, 2008 at 12:07 pm

Maybe Pettitte and Clemens accidentally swapped suits. Pettitte was swimming in his yesterday.

  5. Mick February 5th, 2008 at 12:07 pm

Hey is it just me or has roger really been packing on the pounds lately…. ouch…. he could be the next denny maclean

  6. Guiseppe Franco February 5th, 2008 at 12:10 pm

I guess Pete hasn’t realized that this is the kind of stupid stuff that has gone on in Washington for a hundred years.

This is what a lot of politicians do – tackle the minor and pointless issues to get their names recognized because they can’t solve the real issues of the day.

And it doesn’t make any difference which party controls Congress or occupies the White House.

  7. Clay Bellinger February 5th, 2008 at 12:13 pm

Geez Roger just go away already….

  8. Juke Early February 5th, 2008 at 12:16 pm

Maybe it’s Texas Tea? Nah, that’s oil. . .. Wonder if that pinstripe sausage, er, suit Roger’s sporting is a subliminal message? He does look tan & rested though.

  9. Dee February 5th, 2008 at 12:16 pm

At the risk of sounding vain or crass or both I have to ask, these guys have tons of money right? Why don’t they dress better???

  10. Andrea February 5th, 2008 at 12:18 pm

Just because you have tons of money doesn’t mean you have taste in clothing.

  11. OldYanksFan February 5th, 2008 at 12:24 pm

Maybe Rog bought that suit before he met McNamee?

  12. Rocco February 5th, 2008 at 12:27 pm

    Yes it does Andrea.

  13. MJL February 5th, 2008 at 12:34 pm

Guess this is why Donnie Baseball quit the Dodgers…

Eveything Else In The Country is Great, Let’s Talk To Baseball Players Committee

    Good one, Pete ;-)

Clemens seemed really confident walking in there from what the Associated Press stories were reporting. He and his lawyer seemed confident, actually. Who knows if it’s just an act or if he already knows he has nothing to worry about from Andy’s testimony.

  15. Andrea February 5th, 2008 at 12:38 pm

Rocco has money and wears only shirts he owned in high school and visors he got for free from the Stadium. I rest my case.

  16. hmmm (17-14*) February 5th, 2008 at 12:39 pm

“Hey is it just me or has roger really been packing on the pounds lately…. ouch…. he could be the next denny maclean”

he looks exactly the same to me as he has for years.

i guess i could be wrong, but i don’t see it.

  17. Ranting Guy February 5th, 2008 at 12:41 pm

Mistakenly I posted this in the last thread:

Considering how money as those guys make, at least Clemens should have shelled out for a suit that fits. Well he is out of work now, so I guess he has to cut corners to make ends meet. A tailor to make one of his tattered old suits fit is obviously too much for the poor old guy to handle.

Still no excuse … they could have consulted Jeter on necktie selection instead of going with their Texas fashion instincts.

I do hope that’s all that’s deemed wrong about them in congress’s eyes.

Yes, yesterday I proclaimed I won’t concern myself with what’s going on in there. And I’m not concerned about what went on inside today … just making my fashion comments for amusement.

  18. Ranting Guy February 5th, 2008 at 12:43 pm

Although half of Red Sox Nation is probably saying that Clemens suit is too tight thanks to all the steroids …

  19. TurnTwo February 5th, 2008 at 12:52 pm

is someone really critiquing the suit Clemens is wearing seriously?

  20. Eugene from Michigan February 5th, 2008 at 12:52 pm

Kim Mattingly, wife of Don Mattingly, had been arrested and charged with intoxication and disorderly conduct after refusing to leave his property.

  21. vrsce February 5th, 2008 at 12:53 pm

Every comment above this one is negative in one form or another. Not one of them is positive or instructive or even
interesting. That is propably the nature of all blogs. Petty little comments, a sad reflection on the commentators.

  22. Say it ain't so February 5th, 2008 at 12:56 pm

TurnTwo, unfortunately, yes people really are doing that.

  23. Andrea February 5th, 2008 at 12:56 pm

vrsce: yours is not terribly positive either. The commenters on this blog are a sarcastic bunch. If there’s nothing to talk about, we talk about Roger Clemens’s suit.

  24. Say it ain't so February 5th, 2008 at 12:58 pm

What a shame about the Mattingly’s. Leave it to the Daily News and New York Post to take other people’s personal misery and give headlines that are, I’m sure, hysterical in the eyes of the editors, such as “She swigs and missus”.

  25. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge February 5th, 2008 at 1:00 pm

    Thanks Andrea.

There are only 8 days till pitchers and catchers. :)

  26. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge February 5th, 2008 at 1:02 pm

Say it ain’t so, did they really have that title? That is awful. It becomes more and more clear why he stepped aside from his job with the Dodgers. I also found it odd that he was going to have custody of his son, since that isn’t usually what happens. But now it is pretty obvious.

  27. S.o.S.27 February 5th, 2008 at 1:03 pm

All I wanna know if there is B-12 in his coffee. That would explain his tight suit.

  28. mel February 5th, 2008 at 1:06 pm

If experts can make gangsters look like Ivy Leaguers and skanks look like Mother Theresa, then they should be able to make a baseball player look…

We’re just having fun. Jeez. At least we know where to draw the line. No fair taking shots at Donnie’s wife.

  29. Say it ain't so February 5th, 2008 at 1:11 pm

  31. S.o.S.27 February 5th, 2008 at 1:15 pm

Just reading up on some of the biggest upsets in history. One caught my eye. The 69 Mets beating the Orioles. I was not born yet at the time but what i read is that the O’s were loaded with h.o.f. players. The Mets staff had Ryan,Seaver and someone by the name of Koosman. They beat em in 5. That was supposidly a very young pitching staff that shocked the O’S. Why is it possible for a team in the 60′s to win the World Series with a young pitching staff. But our Yanks arent even given a shot to do the same? Why cant Joba be Ryan, Phil be Seaver and Ian be this Koosman guy? I say bring on the 08 year and i’ll take my chances with these young pitchers with winning track records.

  32. Kj February 5th, 2008 at 1:24 pm

Roger looks fat and old in that pic.

  33. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge February 5th, 2008 at 1:26 pm

ANd look how cool calm and collected he looks, like he is going out for a drink. And poor Andy, he looked like he was going to get his teeth drilled.

  34. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge February 5th, 2008 at 1:29 pm

 somone took a shot a Bill Bellchick, not sure who it was.

  35. Andrea February 5th, 2008 at 1:30 pm

Jennifer: I think that’s because Pettitte is still in his right mind and Clemens is a little off his rocker.

  36. Say it ain't so February 5th, 2008 at 1:30 pm

    From Newsday:

Unlike his buddy, Andy Pettitte, who looked as if he was going to face the executioner, Roger Clemens actually smiled as he walked into Room 2154 of the Rayburn Office Building on Tuesday morning to give a deposition to the House committee investigating baseball and steroids.

  37. mel February 5th, 2008 at 1:30 pm

Roger should’ve kept the hair. He looks like that guy in the Superbowl commercial, the one with the head shrinker.

  38. mel February 5th, 2008 at 1:39 pm

What will McNamee look like? Now we’ll see if his crazy, delirious persona in the “tape” was real or fake.

  39. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge February 5th, 2008 at 1:46 pm

    Is Jeremy Shocky there?

  40. Say it ain't so February 5th, 2008 at 1:51 pm

    Strahan was hilarious, haha.

  41. Larry February 5th, 2008 at 1:55 pm

Man, some of you are ready to throw Rocket to the wolves already, aren’t ya?

Who cares what he is wearing? He looks the same as he has looked the past 4 years. He is 45.

I won’t say Rocket is guilty until I see some evidence that indicates as much. Therefore, I may never think he is guilty.

  42. Andrea February 5th, 2008 at 1:56 pm

Jennifer: I didn’t see Shocky, but I saw someone wearing his jersey.

  43. Larry February 5th, 2008 at 1:59 pm

Shockey’s injury might have been teh very reason the Giants won.

That guy is a piece of poop.

  44. Old Goat February 5th, 2008 at 2:01 pm

Why should any of us care how Clemens suit looks in the first place? Isn’t that being petty?

Caring about how tight a suit is ranks right up there with Congress grilling these guys over steroid use. Much ado about nothing.

  45. Larry February 5th, 2008 at 2:02 pm

    Old Goat,

    Exactly.

  46. Ben(I'm happy Hughes will stay) February 5th, 2008 at 2:02 pm

Hey Guys I just came back to my office the parade was right in front of the building, I can’t wait for the next parade here in November!!! Lets Go NY!! The best chant i chanted was BOSTON SUCKS!!!

  47. saucy February 5th, 2008 at 2:05 pm

damn, wish i would have tivod the parade coverage but when i got home yesterday the wind screwed up my satelite dish. i guess i’ll repoint the thing later and watch hilights…

  48. Ben(I'm happy Hughes will stay) February 5th, 2008 at 2:07 pm

saucy next time go to cnn.com they had it streamin live online. well you missed something. But hopefully you’ll get to see one very soon!

  49. mel February 5th, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Are you guys like me? Particularly excited about spring training this year, more so than in the past? Between solving the Big 3 puzzle, Girardi’s debut as the Yankee skipper, Alex’s “debut”, Action & Tabata, and finding a 1B (ok I’m joking about that one, I’d rather have a root canal) I can’t wait.

It’ll be interesting to see if the guys feed off of Girardi’s energy, even if it’s only spring training. I think that his message will be that winning involves more than flipping the switch on Opening Day. The new blood should help ramp up the energy level as well.

  50. Say it ain't so February 5th, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Bottom line is Andy wouldn’t have known to ask McNamee for HGH unless Clemens had discussed it with him prior to that. And I assume that’s what he was questioned about the most yesterday.

And is Clemens STILL in there? They must be grilling him.

  51. Ben(I'm happy Hughes will stay) February 5th, 2008 at 2:09 pm

mel I’m definetly with you, I’m counting the day’s

  52. Lori February 5th, 2008 at 2:10 pm

Hey, Derek settled his tax dispute with NY! (AP is reporting, terms not disclosed)

  53. Say it ain't so February 5th, 2008 at 2:10 pm

mel, I’m with you. Spring Training can’t get here fast enough. Sure has been a long winter. I’m just really excited for the season, I want to see how everything plays out. And I’m especially excited to see how our 3 young guns live up to the hype.

  54. S.o.S.27 February 5th, 2008 at 2:10 pm

    Hey saucy,
We finally got a playoff pick right. I looked brilliant picking the upset. Most dont know i didnt get any other game right. So i assume your jersey did the job. Colts in 08.

I dont know whats worse. Talking about congress and the players suits or Santana? This has been the slowest offseason i can recall. How many more days till the fun starts?

    Best n.f.l. teams ever?
    Steelers in the 70′s
    49ers in the 80′s
    Cowboys in the 90′s
    Broncos in the 90′s
    Bears in the 80′s

    I go with the 9ers.

  55. whozat February 5th, 2008 at 2:12 pm

“Bottom line is Andy wouldn’t have known to ask McNamee for HGH unless Clemens had discussed it with him prior to that.”

Or, you know…McNamee could have offered it to Andy unsolicited, like Justice claims happened with him.

  56. saucy February 5th, 2008 at 2:14 pm

as much as i’d hate to, i’d have to go 9ers myself.

almost lost my voice yelling at the bar sunday night :)

  57. S.o.S.27 February 5th, 2008 at 2:21 pm

I sort of know what it feels to be a Sox fan. I almost enjoyed watching the Pats go down, more than my Colts winning it last year. Maybe it was because the Colts played in the rain(which sucked)and all the Pats talk of immortality was the main topic for months. Whatever the reason its time to move on and become Yankee minded again(worry about my own team).

  58. S.o.S.27 February 5th, 2008 at 2:25 pm

Could a signing of Mench mean that a trade might be coming where Melky or Damon will be traded? Maybe for bullpen help?

  59. Noname February 5th, 2008 at 2:27 pm

Double shot grande in hand, Roger sports a new very VERY short haircut, and yes, he’s wearing Andy Pettitte’s suit in an attempt to look slim and svelte.

Actually, that haircut makes Roger’s head look smaller, don’t you think? Ha!

  60. Say it ain't so February 5th, 2008 at 2:29 pm

Maybe he had to get a hair cut when his third ear was removed.

  61. hmmm (17-14*) February 5th, 2008 at 2:33 pm

“Maybe he had to get a hair cut when his third ear was removed.”

    not bad.

  62. OldYanksFan February 5th, 2008 at 4:52 pm

It was a huge upset. I figured Baltimore for a sweep. It seemed like a total mismatch.

“Why cant Joba be Ryan, Phil be Seaver and Ian be this Koosman guy?”

In 1968, Tom Seaver had a 2.20 ERA, 165 ERA+. Frankly, short of Clemens in his prime, a Gibson or a Koufax, there are very few guys who were better then ‘Tom Terrific’. Koosman faded a bit after his first 4 years, but ’69 was his career year with a 2.28 ERA, 160 ERA+. Nolan Ryan was a young firerballer who was hard to hit, but was walking 5 per 9 in those days. He was still slightly above league average, but wasn’t yet ‘Nolan Ryan’. The Mets traded him after ’71. They also had a kid named Tug McGraw, who in a 100 IPs posted a 2.24 ERA. Their ‘crappy’ starter was Gary Gentry, who had a HUGE ERA of 3.43. They also had an old vet named Don Cardwell, who had a near career year on 1969 with a 3.01 ERA.

So nobody touches Seaver, but if Phil is ‘SuperHughes’ he could be Koosman (as could Joba) and both Phil and Joba SHOULD be better then Ryan was in ’69.

The Mets had one of ther worst fielding OFers named Ron Swoboda (who was a Yankee briefly in 72-73) who made 2 GREAT catches, when he was normally tripping over his feet.

It truly was a magic year. Even with one the the best pitching staff in modern history, it’s hard to believe they won.

  63. MikeH February 5th, 2008 at 10:12 pm

I realize people can be caught in unflattering poses in photos, but based on this one don’t you think Roger could afford a suit that fits and he at least could have gotten the suit pressed before the congressional hearings? It’s almost as if he thought he could intimidate the politicos like a rookie facing him for the first time with his aura and presence!
