Joba: 45 pitches off the mound

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Feb 11, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Associated Press reports that Joba Chamberlain threw 45 pitches off the mound today.

New pitching coach Dave Eiland lives about 30 minutes from Legends Field and has been working with Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, Jeff Karstens and other guys for several weeks.

Good work by those guys. Of course, that’s what young, ambitious players should be doing, especially with a new manager and a new pitching coach taking over.

Older, more established guys can (and probably should) do their workouts at home. They have families, etc. Spring training is long enough to get ready for the season.

———–

Doug Mientkiewicz signed a minor-league deal with the Pirates. You’ll start to see a lot of guys signs as the report dates approach.

I wonder if he did so for 12 minutes…

  2. gayle February 11th, 2008 at 5:24 pm

Good for Doug although one would think at this stage in his career he might want to play for a team that actually has a shot at something rather then Pittsburgh who in the NL East probably has none

  3. vinny-b February 11th, 2008 at 5:31 pm

does Kevin Mench remain a spring training possibility ?

  4. Ben(I'm Happy Hughes Stayed) February 11th, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Mench is supposealy going to texas

  5. stuart February 11th, 2008 at 5:38 pm

XM is great. Obviously it ha all the baseball games 175 thru about 190.. Music your tastes are more contemproary then mine but there is quite a bit of variety.

141 lately has been 1050 espn, so you can feel like you are back in NY.

  6. mel February 11th, 2008 at 5:39 pm

Traschel picked up by the O’s. Royals turn down Sosa. Ouch.

Good for Minky. But will he have battle Josh Phelps for 1B?

  7. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--27/08 February 11th, 2008 at 5:40 pm

And Barry Bonds is still homeless.

    I love life.

Also, having a friend that’s a Red Sox fan is very very helpful when finding out that the Red Sox and Yankees play on my birthday.

  8. Terry from Hamspha February 11th, 2008 at 5:43 pm

I got Joba and Phil and even Clay B on my fantasy team. But Obviously, I start Bedard, CC Sabbathia, Oswalt, Carmona and as a 5th start Cole Hamels. Not a bad starting 5!?

  9. MikeEff - Shelley at First February 11th, 2008 at 5:45 pm

  10. Luds February 11th, 2008 at 5:48 pm

XM Led baby! All Zeppelin all the time!

  11. whozat February 11th, 2008 at 5:51 pm

“Good for Minky. But will he have battle Josh Phelps for 1B?”

Nah, Phelps left for the Cardinals. Which makes no sense. How much playing time is he going to get behind Pujols?

  12. 2708 February 11th, 2008 at 5:55 pm

This is an article i found yesterday and I thought it was pretty amusing.

    http://www.boston.com/sports/b.....collapses/

  13. 2708 February 11th, 2008 at 5:59 pm

How do I submit a link? I found an article yesterday that talked about the greatest collapses in Boston sports history and how all of the big ones were at the hands of New York teams. It is amuzing to read but my post keeps getting denied.

  14. whoa February 11th, 2008 at 6:01 pm

    Pete,

If you can get gun readings on where Karstens fastball sits, please post it. I’m very skeptical that he is good enough to pitch for the Yankees.

  15. cupaJOBA February 11th, 2008 at 6:03 pm

    JOBA JOBA JOBA!!

  16. raymagnetic â„¢ February 11th, 2008 at 6:04 pm

    “Pete,

If you can get gun readings on where Karstens fastball sits, please post it. I’m very skeptical that he is good enough to pitch for the Yankees.”

Farnsy can hit 100 on the radar gun and look at how not good he is. Doesn’t matter how hard you throw if the pitch has no movement and/or bad location.

  17. 2708 February 11th, 2008 at 6:06 pm

oops, Sorry. It already posted. I guess it had to be approved first. if it reposts I am sorry ( I figured I would appologize in advance)

  18. mary ellen February 11th, 2008 at 6:08 pm

    Thank You Mary,
I have been reading this Blog since A-Rod opted out but never had any reason to post until a few days ago and then today. I really enjoy this blog and i feel i already know alot of the bloggers and their personalities. It is a lot of fun to read.

  20. mel February 11th, 2008 at 6:24 pm

Pete! The formatting’s still whacked. Mary Ellen is showing up as Marv Ellen. And your previous thread at the top is “So far, so oood”

  21. Gotta catch a train February 11th, 2008 at 6:28 pm

Finally somebody speaks out about the spineless Commissioner and none other than John Rocker. He also was named in the Mitchell Report.

  22. Jim PA February 11th, 2008 at 6:29 pm

XM 46 for classic rock, XM 101 The Joint for reggae, XM 5 on tuesday afternoon for Cool Bobby B’s Doo Wopp Stop. iPod and sunroof, huh? A Cuban sandwich and a cold beer and you’re all set, Pete. (How strict is Florida’s open container law?)

  23. Buddy Biancalana February 11th, 2008 at 6:30 pm

    mel-

Are using Firefox or IE or are you on a Mac? I am not seeing what you see though the font & letter size is still quite small.

  24. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--27/08 February 11th, 2008 at 6:33 pm

    mel–looks fine to me.

I’m on a Mac, same computer type as Pete, using Firefox

  25. Doreen February 11th, 2008 at 6:38 pm

    Anyone see this:

    David Cone Article

David Cone says as part of the Players Union’s negotiating team back in ’94-’95, he shoulders some responsibility for fighting a steroid testing program.

In the same article, it also states that YES is working on the Alex Rodriguez Yankeeography, now that he’s staying.

  26. S.o.S.27 February 11th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

Has anyone heard any rumors on Bonds going to any team lately? Last i heard was the A’S. I hope he stays out. But knowing how teams want to make money. I will be shocked if he doesnt get on with a club trying to sell seats.

  27. Fran February 11th, 2008 at 6:48 pm

    Doreen,

I had not seen that article but David Cone was on Yankees Hot Stove last Thursday and pretty much said the same things that he said in the article.
But I am glad to see that they are working on a Yankeeography for Alex. That means he’s a “real Yankee!”

  28. mel February 11th, 2008 at 6:49 pm

I’m a dinosaur. IE on non-Mac laptop. Someone stole my Mac. :)

I refuse to use Firefox or Apple computers.

ESPN has an article about Rocker. Saying Selig knew about the steroids and how team doctors and league whatever advised them out to use them.

Selig’s such a fake. I wish they would replace the cadaver with a real commissioner.

  29. Buddy Biancalana February 11th, 2008 at 6:49 pm

    SoS-

Bonds will not be on the A’s or the Padres either, he may not get work anywhere, more so b/c he won’t take anything less than $8-10 million.

  30. Buddy Biancalana February 11th, 2008 at 6:50 pm

    I love firefox, couldn’t live w/o it.

  31. AlexCT February 11th, 2008 at 6:53 pm

i believe its called LUCY, i think its the last station in the rock category. its all 90′s alternative stuff. best playlist i’ve heard in a long time.

personally i make huge genre based playlists on my ipod eg. classic rosk, oldies, 80′s, softer stuff… with about 3-4 hundred songs each to avoid having to listen to the radio, and i too have a direct jack in my car for ipod, so the sound is great, but lucy is pretty good.

don’t get in an accident flipping through all the XM stations, i almost have a few times when i drive one of the company cars that has it!

Jack Curry has some fun spring training stuff up on his blog concerning Posada and Jeter:

    http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/

  33. mel February 11th, 2008 at 6:55 pm

Oops. This is the quote: “Former major league pitcher John Rocker said Monday that baseball commissioner Bud Selig knew he failed a drug test in 2000 and that doctors for the “league” and the “players association” advised him and several Texas Rangers teammates on how to effectively use steroids.”

  34. Scott Brosius Would make a Good Neighbor February 11th, 2008 at 6:59 pm

Did anyone see this article in the Times saying that Pettite asked not to give public testimony, because he doesn’t want to hurt Clemens in public? http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02.....emens.html
    crazy stuff.
    any thoughts, pete?

  35. Buddy Biancalana February 11th, 2008 at 6:59 pm

Pettitte wants to be excused from hurting the Rocket:

  36. mel February 11th, 2008 at 7:00 pm

    Buddv,

I don’t know why but I can’t bring myself to use it. IE’s like my favorite jeans. There’s some holes, but they get the job done. To me they just dug up Netscape, slapped some new paint and added a few features, and repackaged it like it’s something new.

Seriously, I’m not a gotta get it now kind of person. I have a google addy, but I don’t use it. I’m basically a simple person. Or simpleton to some. :)

  37. Buddy Biancalana February 11th, 2008 at 7:00 pm

    Scotty-

You beat me to the punch.

  38. Kirk Herbstreit February 11th, 2008 at 7:05 pm

Terry why the hell would you pick starters with innings limits for the bulk of your fantasy pitching staff?

  40. Fran February 11th, 2008 at 7:12 pm

I too was about to post that article from the New York Times. I thought that it was interesting that lawyers involved in the case said they thought that Andy gave testimony that could hurt Clemens.

  41. Doreen February 11th, 2008 at 7:16 pm

    Mel,

I have a desktop PC that I use most of the time. But we got my daughter a small Mac notebook (who knows what it’s called??) and after about 7:30 or so, I switch over so I can hang out in the family room, but still keep tabs on the blog (I’m sick, I know – a fellow lohudblogaholic, if you will).

I am so used to right-clicking and other things you just do naturally on a PC, that sometimes I find the Mac a hindrance. But I’m going to learn it.

As for Firefox, I don’t even know what it is!

  42. Doreen February 11th, 2008 at 7:18 pm

I just read the NYTimes article about Posada/Jeter, and then the article about Pettitte.

First, phew – close call, huh?

Second, I guess Jeter’s not a kid anymore.

Third, I really feel badly for Andy Pettitte. I know they all created this situation for themselves, but still…

  43. Buddy Biancalana February 11th, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Perhaps it’s time to get a new pair of jeans? :>)

  44. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--27/08 February 11th, 2008 at 7:23 pm

mel, firefox will seriously save your computer.

  45. Olde Town Glory February 11th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Why doesn’t anyone ever include Spring Training innings in a pitcher’s work load on the season? They’re just as stressful as Winter League innings.

  46. Bronx Liaison February 11th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Im also on the firefox bandwagon, Mel.

Its the new pair of jeans you’ve been looking for man.

  47. whozat February 11th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

“To me they just dug up Netscape, slapped some new paint and added a few features, and repackaged it like it’s something new.”

I’ve looked at the code base…and that’s just not true:-)

The thing I like most about firefox (and there are some things I don’t like…for instance, it can be a memory hog just like IE) is the community of plug-in developers. I’ve got this one that prevents any Flash stuff from loading until I explicitly ask for it. It’s so wonderful…I don’t have to worry about those dumb auto-playing videos on yankees.com

  48. whozat February 11th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

“They’re just as stressful as Winter League innings.”

Not really. No one cares if you win spring training games. And the hitters really aren’t geared up yet. A guy like Moose basically spends all of spring training pounding his FB in the zone to build up arm strength. That’s waaaaay different for his arm than if he were pitching competitively.

  49. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--27/08 February 11th, 2008 at 7:45 pm

I love adblock, foxytunes and stumbleupon.

The last is great for distractions.

  50. Olde Town Glory February 11th, 2008 at 7:51 pm

Whozat, no one really cares all that much if they win in winter league either. Let’s say ST innings are half as stressful as winter league meetings. They’d still add up.

  51. Rocco February 11th, 2008 at 7:51 pm

Firefox so I can block all of pete’s ads :)

  52. mel February 11th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

Oh My! What a can of worms I opened! Who knew it’d get more comments than Clemens v. Pettitte.

I’ll keep an open mind. Some in the household use IE, some use Firefox. We’ll see.

  53. Alfred Bester February 11th, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Pretty interesting regarding Pettitte. I hope they don’t make him testify. Let the man get on with his life.

  59. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--27/08 February 11th, 2008 at 8:31 pm

Just got a text alert: Pettitte will NOT testify Wed before congress.

  60. Franklyn February 11th, 2008 at 8:33 pm

actually, as to the whole computer/browser debate, opera is the best browser, and definitely has some advantages over firefox and ie.

  61. Say it ain't so February 11th, 2008 at 8:37 pm

Rebecca, where did you get that confirmed?

I really hope he doesn’t have to go. He’s cooperated and done everything they asked of him, now let him go through a few days of questioning from the media and then focus on baseball.

  62. Doreen February 11th, 2008 at 8:38 pm

    Rebecca =

    That’s good news. Thanks.

Man HGH Pettitte could have cried in the capital like Mark Mcguire.Man well atleast he will be gone by next year and we can rid all these cheaters from this team like Giambi.

McHating. We get it already, YOU HATE Andy. You know you have a lot of misplaced anger you really need to get over it.

  67. Liane February 11th, 2008 at 11:42 pm

    Pete,

XM 30 is a mix of some older (late 80′s-90′s0 R&B/Rap/Pop.

XM 67/68-The Heat and The City-if you want to keep it real wit da kids. I think XM 94 is the Latino groove-sometimes good, sometimes ehh. 7/8 is 70′s, 80′s respectfully. Those are my main flips, and I throw in a little XM 83 for some 70′s/Studio 54 Club Music

  68. mko February 12th, 2008 at 1:33 am

    You know what I’m wondering?
With all the talk about pitch counts, wouldn’t it be bad if the young guys already threw 5000 pitches before the season even starts?
Why is there never talk about all the pitches they throw in training/bullpen sessions and spring training games?
Or doesn’t it matter that much because they don’t go all out until the real season is around?

  69. jyjjy February 12th, 2008 at 2:09 am

Notice how IE7 is better than IE6? Almost every improvement was lifted directly from firefox. It still isn’t nearly as good however. For the things you can’t see, like security, it isn’t even comparable.

  70. TurnTwo February 12th, 2008 at 8:21 am

from what i heard reported by TJ Quinn on ESPN Radio last night, Andy’s testimony didnt necessarily implicate Clemens and confirm McNamee’s testimony so much as it was just all over the place. i think this was already posted earlier, but the Congressmen involved did not think Pettitte’s testimony would have helped either way, and might have made the hearings out to be a circus (yeah, cause that would be the only reason…).

the other thought i have on the news that came out yesterday is regards to John Rocker and the new statements from Jose Canseco. You have people blasting them for coming out yesterday, painting Rocker and Canseco as scorned lovers who were cast aside by baseball unceremoniously, and feel the need to ‘get back’ at Bud Selig. This morning on the radio, Kim Jones agreed with a caller who said that we shouldnt give John Rocker any credibility, because he’s a racist and, well, lets just say a jerk.

and while that may be true, when all of the news broke following Canseco’s book, and after Palmeiro tested positive, the original Congressional hearings were done, who was the only man who seemed to have any sort of credibility on the issue? Canseco.

and if John Rocker said he tested positive in 2000, and he was named in the Mitchell Report, why isnt he given a platform to talk about it? Why wasnt he asked to testify in front of Congress? Yes, he is a putz, but he is seemingly willing to offer a window into the culture of drugs and steroids during this era and I think we should at least listen. And, IMO, he’s one player who isnt afraid to talk about Bud Selig’s role in all of this, which is one aspect of the whole investigation that is being COMPLETELY overlooked.

if i was a current player, whether i did or didnt take PEDs, I would be LIVID at Selig and the owners. They hold just as much, if not more, responsibility in this mess, and are washing their hands of it, while the players are being completely hung out to dry.

if nothing else more than he is selfishly just trying to gain publicity for himself, Rocker might lend a little more legitimacy to the entirety of the report, or even shed more light on the subject than Mitchell’s “comprehensive” findings.

  71. ET90210 February 12th, 2008 at 8:52 am

I know you guys hate the back-and-forth talk on Joba’s role this upcoming season, but maybe it’s finalized?
