So far, so good

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Feb 11, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Spring training is off to a good start. I love my rental car, a Pontiac G6 with a sunroof, XM radio and a jack for my iPod.

I don’t have XM at home. Can anybody suggest some good channels?

The hotel is good, too. Close to Legends Field, plenty of space, free granola bars and oranges in the morning. Can’t beat it.

OK, I’ll stop rubbing it in. I realize it’s cold back home.

I know XM has the baseball package, but you need Sirius. E Street Radio is sweet. All Bruce, all the time. Tons of live stuff and other songs you don’t hear that often.

I half expect you to be wearing a Sox cap. That’s just mean.

Meanwhile, up here, there’s been a spate of tire slashings, and wouldn’t you know, they’ve all been on streets that border mine.

Not to mention I saw at least two cars fail to start this morning.

    Here’s the XM Channel listing

My one complaint about 175 is that there is too much Charlie Steiner. I didn’t like him on ESPN, and I disliked him in the Lowes Booth (if it were that then) with John Sterling.

You know, there’s something to be said for an employer which pays you to go to Florida from early February through March to watch games and talk to baseball people.

    Good afternoon to all,

Does anyone else hope that Schillings cortisone shot doesnt help? As much as i hate him, I think he helps eat innings and keep his team in almost every game. Heres hoping he becomes a full time blogger.

As far as this f3 thing. Just to let everyone know this is only my secong blog of the day. So dont bother f3ing me. Seriously why tell people how to do that. Now they can just skip the nonsense and read sj and cb. What sense does that make? We only make those people look smarter posting our comments. So i will continue to hold up my end of the bargain.

I just finished doing a 2 hour driving school coarse on the net for a ticket. Biggest joke ever. Why not just have us pay an extra fee and not waste our time in doing it. Who cares what the cartoon characters vehicle he was driving. Or the color of his super hero uniform.

  22. Olde Town Glory February 11th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

Good point Mark. One of the many perks of being a baseball writer.

  23. Olde Town Glory February 11th, 2008 at 4:29 pm

S.o.S. it will be interesting to see what happens. According to Schilling’s doctor, if the cortisone shot doesn’t work Schilling won’t be able to use his shoulder in two weeks. If that happens though, it will still give him enough time to have surgery and still likely be back in the second half.

At this point it seems likely that Schilling will return in late 2008. The larger question is probably how much his injury may affect his performance.

  24. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge February 11th, 2008 at 4:32 pm

    S.o.S.27

You can take an online course to get out of a ticket? What is this word coming to?

Curiously do you have a link for it, I’d be curious to check it out.

    Jennifer,
Yes. Iv taken 2 at comedytrafficschool.com. Im in California so im not sure if they do all the states. You can ask for a list of websites from the Courts that you got the ticket in. The funny thing is you can cheat. They tell you which wrong answers you got and it doesnt limit you on how many times you can take it. It does help you from not having to go to a class and watch red asphalt for the umpteenth time. Hope this helps.

  30. Peter Abraham February 11th, 2008 at 4:41 pm

  32. CB February 11th, 2008 at 4:46 pm

From reports out of Boston it sounds like the Red Sox pressured Shilling into the cortisone shot. His contract is not insured and the Sox are clearly not happy.

If Shilling was reluctant to get the cortisone, his doctors were probably saying he needed surgery. No way anyone, let alone a pitcher, would be hesitant to go with the conservative approach to a shoulder injury unless it was really substantial. If he has a tear anywhere in his shoulder the cortisone shot will only help things marginally.

The Red Sox pitching will be interesting to follow this year. They have a lot of talent but with Shilling down and Wakefield 41 depth may become an issue. Buchholz is going to have an innings cap and I’d guess that was part of their thinking in bringing Shilling back.

They have a lot of talent in the minors but its more position players than arms. Justin Masterson is probably closest to ready but he profiles right now probably more as a relief pitcher than a starter.

  33. S.o.S.27 February 11th, 2008 at 4:47 pm

    Olde Town Glory,
He reminds me alot of Pedro. He has lost his velocity but continues to have success with his junk pitches. Everyone seems to get under the ball and pop it up. Basically the next closes thing to a knuckleball i guess. If we knew for sure he is going to play this year. Then i would hope its the begginning to the season, so he tires out in the end and they shut him down for good. But even if he does comeback for the year. His 85 mile an hour fastballs will be less intimidating than the 94 a couple years ago.

It sure would be nice to have the two most hated players in sports shut it down the same year. Bonds and Schill. That would really be refreshing for once.

Considering that Schilling’s own doctor estimates his chances of returning at “0%” (his exact quote) if he doesn’t have surgery, I think we can forget about Schill for 2008.

Just leaves him more time to blog.

On second thought, GET WELL SOON SCHILL!!

  37. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--27/08 February 11th, 2008 at 4:53 pm

Pete, you sure you’re not a Jersey kid?

  38. S.o.S.27 February 11th, 2008 at 4:55 pm

    SJ44,
At least if hes full time blogging. We wont have to see or listen to him again. I for one, have never been on his blog. So let him blab away to his followers and leave us at peace.

Does anyone know what the sox doctors found in his shoulder? Was it the same result as his own doctor? Can this injury be similiar to what Wang had a couple years ago where they just rested him and it all worked out?

  39. Olde Town Glory February 11th, 2008 at 4:55 pm

SJ, most doctors have said he’ll be back. And even Schilling’s doctor said he’ll be back if he has surgery. If rehabbing isn’t working in a couple weeks, Schilling could then get surgery and still be back in time.

  40. ML February 11th, 2008 at 4:57 pm

XM 40, Deep Tracks, usually good. Lots of good, classic rock. Dylan’s show airs on this channel Mondays @ 8 PM, as well as Wednesdays @ 10 AM. Good stuff.

  41. Olde Town Glory February 11th, 2008 at 4:59 pm

One doctor said he had a torn rotator cuff but Schilling said that isn’t true. Another doctor said it was an issue with his bicipital groove which connects his shoulder to his bicep.

I’m not sure how that compares to Wang. I don’t remember what was wrong with him.

  42. pat February 11th, 2008 at 5:00 pm

I would rather Schilling pitch ineffectively than not pitch at all so I hope they consider him ready to go this year.

  46. Josh February 11th, 2008 at 5:01 pm

I’m going to Florida on Saturday and staying near Jupiter. I’m going to see if I can see some Cardinal and Marlin action while I’m down there, I’m literally 7 minutes away from their complex down there. Can’t wait for that weather.

  47. SJ44 February 11th, 2008 at 5:02 pm

If he gets the surgery later, his doctor said he misses most, if not all of the season.

As it is right now, with a rest and rehab treatment schedule (which is what they are doing now) his return is not until sometime “after the All Star Break”. That’s a pretty optimistic view.

The guy has a torn rotator cuff. The size of the tear is unknown. However, its large enough for the Red Sox and Schilling to differ on the course of treatment. That tells me its a significant tear. Not a small tear, like Pedro had for years, but was able to pitch through it until he ultimately needed surgery.

That makes the injury different than Wang’s a few years back.

Bottom line is, if they treat this injury in a non-evasive manner for the next 6 weeks (which is the rumored timetable), then decide to opt for the surgery, he’s out until Mid-September at the earliest.

Name me the last pitcher, let alone a 41 year old pitcher, who missed 90% of a season and has come back to pitch effectively?

    The Pirates signed Mientkiewicz.

    http://pittsburgh.pirates.mlb......8;c_id=pit

I’m going completely off topic, but I was listening to Mike and Maddog before, and how can anyone logically believe that Clemens’ wife taking HGH isn’t a big deal in this case? They haven’t denied it at all, which I would take to mean that McNamee told the truth about her. So then let me get this straight, Clemens Camp.. you mean to tell me that Roger’s wife and Roger’s best friend both received the same drug from the same trainer (the one you introduced to both of them, and also allowed to live at your home) but Roger didn’t at least take HGH? Um, okay…

  55. CB February 11th, 2008 at 5:12 pm

    SJ44,

I agree with your assessment. I think Schilling is done for the year. Probably his career.

What the Sox are doing here almost reminds me a bit of what the yankees did with Pavano when they made him do everything possible before approving his TJ surjery. They clearly aren’t happy and feel that Schilling was being open with them when he signed that contract.

If Schilling gets surgery his career is done. That Schilling was even considering that type of treatment option tells you a great deal. Most people think he’s got a borderline case for the hall of fame. I’d have to think he’d want to rack up as many wins as possible. He’s at 216 now – if he could get to 230 his HOF case would be that much stronger.

Maybe he’ll be able to get back on the mound. But I don’t think he’ll have much left. He didn’t look very good at all down the stretch last year as it was.

  56. S.o.S.27 February 11th, 2008 at 5:13 pm

Name me the last pitcher, let alone a 41 year old pitcher, who missed 90% of a season and has come back to pitch effectively?

Is that before or after B-12 came into play? I guess he’ll be the first Post B-12.

  59. SJ44 February 11th, 2008 at 5:20 pm

Hardin has already denied McNamee’s claims re: Clemens’ wife.

Mike and The Mad Dog have no insight on this case. They just read wire service accounts and listen to ESPN soundbites and work off that stuff to spur phone calls.

If you are looking for factual information from either guy, you are looking in the wrong place.

Frankly, what Debbie Clemens did or did not do has ZERO relevence in this case. Its just more sludge thrown against the wall by McNamee’s camp in an effort to win the public relations battle.

For folks who react to every sleazy thing in this case, its an effective strategy. For those who want to learn the truth, it does nothing to advance the ball in that area.

I am though, curious at how McNamee’s lawyers seem to have a pipeline to the government. Quite troubling to those of us who still believe in following the law in these investigations.

  60. S.o.S.27 February 11th, 2008 at 5:21 pm

    CB,
    Speaking of H.O.F.

    Does a career
    3.7 e.r.a.
    250 wins
    144 loses
    get you in?
    That Mooses numbers

    Schillings
    3.46
    214 wins
    146 loses
Does Schilling go in because of his playoff success?

  61. Say it ain't so February 11th, 2008 at 5:26 pm

SJ, where did he deny those claims? All he denied, that I saw at least, was that Roger had anything to do with it. By all means, correct me if I’m wrong.

I disagree that it has no relevence to the case. We’re trying to find out who is lying, and any intelligent person is going to put two and two together that if Roger’s wife took HGH, then so did Roger.

I find it more troubling that Clemens and Hardin met one on one with all the congressmen. It’ll be interesting on Wednesday to see if they actually ask tough questions instead of asking for an autograph.

  62. CB February 11th, 2008 at 5:31 pm

Unfortunately it’s very hard to discount Schilling’s post season performance.

I don’t think you ding a guy for not having the best post seasons. But if they do excel that’s something you have to take into consideration, especially for borderline cases.

Moose and Schilling are both tough cases.

Personally, I don’t think Moose is a HOF player. And unfortunately, if I had to I’d say Curt Schilling is (and that pains me to say).

  65. asburyboss February 11th, 2008 at 5:37 pm

Opie & Anthony? Those guys are an embarrassment. Like the Pirates compared to the Yankees (Stern).

S.o.S27…I often compare Mussina to Schilling…and the nu,mbers are overwhelmingly in Moose’s favor. The big difference is the posts (which you mention) plus, Mussina was great young and got worse. Schilling was bad young and got better…so he leaves on a higher note.

The question to how a pitcher gets better with age will be answered by Clemens in the coming days

  66. SJ44 February 11th, 2008 at 5:37 pm

When the Debbie Clemens story first broke, Hardin called it ridiculous. He doesn’t have to respond to every dirty trick done in this case. In fact, its better that he doesn’t. It makes McNamee and his side look sleazier by the day if he just ignores it.

Why is it so wrong for Clemens to meet with the Congressmen?

He, like all citizens, have every right to walk the Halls of Congress and meet with their (or other) Congressmen.

I have never been investigated by Congress. Yet, I have been in those Halls and have had the pleasure to meet with a couple of Congressmen on two different occasions.

After all, these people DO work for us. Even though most of them forget that….except for election years, of course.

If McNamee chose to, he could also meet individually with the Congressmen. This wasn’t some special privilage afforded Clemens.

Again, you need to try, and its hard to do since you are bombarded daily with this coverage, and ignore listening to most (if not all) the media on this subject.

They want Clemens to be guilty so much, it slants their coverage. They simply aren’t able to put aside their dislike of the man and just report, not spin, the story.

There is so much to this story that doesn’t add up, its not funny. We simply don’t have enough information to make an informed judgment as to who is lying in this case.

Unfortunately, the coverage of this story has been so poor, it hasn’t helped us in the slightest in getting to the truth.

    Perhaps the hearings will.

Yeah, I’ve preset 110 and the other two classical channels. I’ve got 121, FOX News Channel, 130 POTUS, and it’s about time to begin listening to 175 (MLB Home Plate). I’ve also got the contemporary Christian channel, which is quite good; I think that one’s at 32.

  70. Say it ain't so February 11th, 2008 at 5:50 pm

SJ, we’re going to have to agree to disagree on this.

Hardin and Clemens have had something to say on every single topic that’s come out of McNamee’s mouth, but to defend his wife, all he says is that it’s ridiculous to think Roger would be involved in that. He didn’t deny what she’d done, though.

The problem with him meeting one-on-one with these people is that it’s flat out shady. Who knows what he was telling them in there? In all likelihood, they’ll be inclined to take it easier on Clemens because they feel like they have some personal relationship with him now.

  71. Luds February 11th, 2008 at 5:50 pm

  72. Bronx Born February 11th, 2008 at 5:53 pm

Do you really think our esteemed congresspeople would be influenced by meeting a celebrity like Clemens? What is shady is the entire Mitchell Report. Plus I would really like to know who is paying the legal bills for this down and out x-trainer? Now that might be shady.

  73. john scott February 11th, 2008 at 5:54 pm

Moose made ALL of his starts in the AL East while Schilling made over 300 of his 436 starts in the National League. Moose has more wins and is an exceptional fielder. If he can get to 275 he may make it. Schilling will absolutely ger credit for his playoff success (unfortunately).

  74. Pat February 11th, 2008 at 6:00 pm

XM 202 Opie and Anthony, they are uncensored and you will laugh your a$$ off everyday, you will LOVE it !!

SJ, that he’ll be back after the All-Star break is the optimistic view. That he won’t be back until September or won’t be back at all is the pessimistic view. According to Schilling’s doctor if the rehab isn’t going to work we’ll know in two weeks because Schilling’s shoulder will get so stiff he’ll barely be able to use it. If that happens and he then gets surgery, he could still be back a month after the All-Star break.

At this point it appears most likely that he will be back. But who knows, different people recover differently.

    Say It Ain’t So -

Meeting with the congressional representatives does not necessarily guarantee Clemens’ testimony a more positive reception, and if could do just the opposite if the congressperson in question felt the meeting was to curry favor.

I’m maintaining my distance from this issue for the most part for now. But I just thought I’d point out that sometimes the thing you think might work for someone is the very thing that works against them.

  79. Olde Town Glory February 11th, 2008 at 6:17 pm

Clemens does have somewhat of an unfair advantage. He has hundreds of millions of dollars. He’s been running a PR campgain and a smear campaign against McNamee for months straight. But if Pettitte backs up McNamee’s story, as he’s expected to, none of that will matter.

    Pete,

Ive had XM in my car for 4 years and I love it.

First and foremost is that, besides all the great music you can find, they broadcast every major league game. but i’m sure you already knew that.

Besides the mlb games what makes XM worth the price is Bob Dylan’s Themetime Radio Hour. It doesn’t matter if you like Dylan’s music or not. You’ll never hear it on his show anyways. What you will hear is a very eclectic, well researched hour of music.

The Dylan show is repeated all day long every Wednesday on XM 002. On Thursdays the Tom Petty’s Buried Treasures Show is excellent and plays rock n roll, r&b & soul tunes that you seldom hear. The Petty show is also on Chanel 002.

Schilling, never known to be a stickler for conditioning, had best be on a full fledged program to stay in baseball shape during every day he’s on the DL and in particular, his leg strength.
He’ll have dependency on his legs more than at any time in his career to push off the mound and take strain off his repaired shoulder.
Many say that his mechanics changed after his ankle surgery and the end result is what he faces today.

    Drive 4-5 -

Isn’t the Dylan show great? At first I thought it would be his own music, but it’s not. I was very pleasantly surprised.

If anything is wrong with Clemens getting to know politicians, then it’s even worse that a life long politician, power broker, sports network chairman/business partner of MLB and director of another baseball team–Mitchell, was in charge of assembling information to persuade the same politicians–to see things his way.

No wonder you guys were asleep at the computer when the players were juicing. You are on vacation.

How does Clemens have an “unfair advantage”? If he did not use PED’s, ‘ya think he hasn’t been smeared by McNamee?

Even if he did, he hasn’t been smeared by McNamee and his side?

Geez, McNamee even brought the Clemens’ wife into this thing. He isn’t exactly a shrinking violet in all this.

The reality is, McNamee, like Radomski, are sleazebags. They are vermin, garbage who, along with plenty of others of their ilk infiltrated ML locker rooms (all over baseball, not just in NY) throughout a 15 year period.

Who is to blame for this? EVERYBODY in the sport. Players, owners, front office executives (who gave these guys credentials allowing them this kind of access) the media (who slept on this story so they didn’t lose their cushy gigs) the Commissioner and the Players Association.

There are no heroes and no victims in this story. Everybody is to blame to where the sport was for a very long period of time.

Its why, if there were truly gatekeepers in the game, the resignations of Selig and Fehr would be demanded.

If Congress REALLY wants to do something to clean up the sport, instead of just having show hearings, they should tell baseball, “Either Selig and Fehr resign immediately or you lose your anti-trust exemption”. If they did that, both those guys would be out the door in a day.

How Bud Selig gets a RAISE after being “Commissioner of Steroids” is as insulting as anything that has happened in this sordid mess.

Fehr? I have a great deal of respect for Fehr. Overall, he has done a fantastic job. However, ignoring his rank and file membership, and fostering a complete non-strategy to combat PED use among his membership is an offense that should require his resignation.

He protected the few at the expense of the majority of his membership. IMO, you can’t lead the most powerful labor union in America and act like that.

Brian McNamee is no victim in this case. He is a piece of garbage who held onto medical waste, probably for blackmail purposes, in an attempt to stay close to a player he idolized.

Roger Clemens is no victim because he kept a guy around, a known sleazebag (if you don’t think so, trying read the police report on his date rape charge), around him and, by extension, the Yankee locker room.

Its just a story exposing the sleazy underbelly of people who hang around some of these athletes.

Its why guys like Jeter and Arod keep to themselves. Its why they say nothing of substance publicly. They don’t have these types hanging around them. As we see, for good reason.

To whomever recommends Sirius to Pete, he said he had a Pontiac G6 not a flatbed truck. The size of the Sirius units wont fit in a normal human sized car.

  92. Whatever February 11th, 2008 at 9:25 pm

I’ve got the XM service at home as part of the DirecTV package and also in the car. There’s lots of excellent channels pertaining to whatever you like. I listen to a lot of “The Verge”, channel 52, which has a lot of great music by a lot of artists you’ve never heard of.

The technology of today is so nice. Last summer on vacation my wife and I sat at the base of Devil’s Tower in Northeast Wyoming and listened to a crystal clear broadcast of the Yankee game on XM radio. It was slightly surreal, but really great.

  93. Jeb February 11th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

Pete – to keep your sanity, do NOT listen to Kevin Kennedy & Rob Dibble on XM channel 175 “the show”. Dibble has the IQ of a cabbage.

The low 70′s XM has the jazz stations, 40 is deep cut rock, 46 is rock hits, 49 is big rock hits (the kind where you hold your lighter in the air), 54 is progressive rock and 49 is XM led zep.

    Pete,

Check their on-line schedule. You don’t want to miss either Dylan or Tom Petty’s radio shows. Both great for different reasons. The Dylan show is as good as it gets.

  96. Andy Hawkins February 12th, 2008 at 4:19 am

    Pete,

Can’t believe nobody (at least nobody that I saw) mentioned XM 41. Boneyard. I’m pretty sure Rolling Stone or some publication of that ilk named it the best station on satellite radio. Another one I like is XM 65, The Rhyme.. Old-school rap. Hear some songs I haven’t heard since back in the day.

Also, the MLB station (175) is fantastic. Even the Steiner show, which is getting bashed here.

  97. Drew February 12th, 2008 at 9:45 am

Thanks for rubbing it in Pete.
