For the first time since 1996, the Yankees have a new manager. Brian Cashman details the on-field issues Joe Girardi will have to deal with as camp opens.
It is 9 degrees outside of my place in New York as I write this. It’s expected to get to 76 in Tampa today. Can’t say I’m sorry to be getting back to work. I’m leaving for LaGuardia shortly and will check back in from Florida once I get a chance.

Be safe, pal. Looking forward to your Tampa entries.
Have a safe one Pete. have a great time and a great season. looking forward.
It must be nice to be working in Florida. I’ll be working in Idaho, shortly.
I’m jealous, Pete.
I live about 15 minutes from White Plains, NY. As I discovered when walking my infamous dog about 30 minutes ago, that’s 9 degrees when the wind isn’t blowing. (With the wind chill it’s about 8 below). The only thing keeping me going at this point in February is that very soon, there will be Yankee baseball.
Tampa Florida, 76 degrees. Good luck and godspeed, Pete. Remember to pack your sunscreen.
Pitchers and catchers report on Thursday! Looking forward to your reports from Tampa Pete.
Pete -
From the last thread. I wholeheartedly agree with you that the Grammys are a joke. I haven’t taken them even remotely seriously since 1981 when Chris Cross won a few. Chris Who? Yeah.
Also, I feel your pain regarding packing. I have never packed for 50 days, thank the Lord, but, last month we went on a 4-day mini-trip and I had trouble! However, I doubt you try to coordinate your wardrobe including shoes and I know you don’t try every “outfit” on before making a final decision!
If I had to pack to 50 days, I simply could not do it! At all.
Have a safe trip into Tampa, and I’m looking forward to your spring training reports.
murphydog -
Here in Central NJ, the wind was so furious last night it kept me awake for about an hour! I’m glad I don’t have a dog, infamous or otherwise, to walk!
Pete, enjoy your time in florida. I’m sure we will.
Pete, Where are you staying (sleeping) this year?
Pete,
Braggin about how warm it is in Tampa? That’s cold man, that’s just cold. Especially since I’m about to bundle up as if I’m headed for the Alaskan wilderness.
Representative Darrell Issa (R. Ca.) seems to get it: Congress is going overboard. He’s on the Committee taking testimony on the Mitchell Report. Let him know what you think. It takes two minutes.
http://issa.house.gov/index.cfm?FuseAction=ContactInformation.ContactForm&CFID=6377333&CFTOKEN=95853427
Yes, Joe Girardi will run an energetic spring training and yes, Joe Torre had become complacent. The players will like the difference in routines.
Pete,
Safe travel. Enjoy the sun, I’ll be down there this weekend too. Hope to meet you in Tampa sometime this spring.
Enjoy, Pete. It’s 4 here in Toledo, with a bit of a warm up tomorrow — and 6 inches of snow. I am so ready for baseball.
sent issa my comment that congress should by all means be investigating the Mitchell Report, MLB, and Clemens/McNamee and do what it can to try to protect the young athelets in this country. If all congress can do is embarass and chide mlb and the players toward real drug testing at least someone is doing something to show young athelete’s that it is cheating and they will be investigated and ever prosecuted if caught. It seems to me that MLB/MLBPA is failing to discourage PED usage by no pursuing effective drug testing and that mlb fans are rewarding players who use or look the other way by coming to more games and spending more money on baseball.
All these teams show up hat-in-hand looking for tax dollars when they build new stadiums everywhere (tons of tax dollars going into New Yankee Stadium and Citi Field), and the game as we know it would not be possible if not for Congress bending the anti trust regulations, so too bad they have to answer questions put to them by Congress. Congress IMO has every right, even the responsibility to investigate.
Hi Pete, Hope I get to see you on your trip down here. By the way it is 57 in Clearwater right now.
Doreen
I think you meant to write 1991.
I’m pretty sure chris cross weren’t even alive in 1981 let alone winning a grammy.
Let me tell you it is soooo cold outside. The wind nearly blew me down! And traffic is a nightmare. Pete you better leave for the airport!!
Safe travels to you!
I love how you call going to Tampa, while it is 9 degrees up here in the north east, to cover a baseball team, work. Just kidding…have a safe trip and send back some actual baseball news.
Jennifer -
No, I meant Christopher Cross of Sailing and Arthur’s Theme fame. He had exactly those 2 hit songs and won an Oscar and multiple grammies.
this chris cross:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Cross
Just My Opinion -
Exactly!
The grass is so green at Legends Field that it looks like a new Brunswick pool table. Not a blade of grass out of way. The scent of baseball is in the air. Soon baseballs will be smacking at gloves and the sound of wood against baseballs. Interlocking NY’s on caps.
My God, you know summer is around the corner when Pete’s packing for Tampa… Love ya Pete, fly safe. AND, SO jealous… You think 9 degrees in NYC is bad, try -15 up on the coast of Maine!!!
Doreen
sorry. I don’t even know why I thought of that awful duo! Actually I didn’t even know there was a Christopher Cross, I was only 3 at the time.
Jennifer –
Well, that makes us even, because I didn’t know there was a different Chris Cross!
8 degrees here near Rochester, and yesterday a 36 car pile up on the freeway.
Pete, don’t get sunburned down there. By all means, have a lot of fun. I am still trying to make it down in a few weeks. Plans have changed somewhat. Good hunting and happy days. 27/08.
Hey Pete, have a safe flight and welcome back to work (even though you seemed pretty productive to me even during your “off season”). You know if we could all hop on that plane with you and follow you around in Tampa, we would:-)
LET’S GO 27!!!
“Before Jeter began hitting and taking grounders, he tweaked his usual offseason physical training program, something he hinted might be a concession to age - he will be 34 on June 26. Jeter says he typically loses as much as 10 pounds over the course of a season even though, “I eat all the time, man,” he says. In the past, he had tried to gain weight in the offseason.
Not this winter. Instead, he focused on “agility, moving, stretching, moving around a little bit better, more lateral movement, that kind of stuff.”
He usually starts camp at 200 pounds - the first workout for position players is Feb. 21 - and is now at 197. Coaches at the complex say he looks fitter and faster than he usually does at this time of year.
“The older you get,” Jeter says, “the more adjustments you’ve got to make.”"
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2008/02/11/2008-02-11_derek_jeter_springs_for_stability.html?page=1
It’s always good to know that the Captain is making adjustments.
Moose is “penciled in the rotation” yet Hughes is “not guaranteed a spot”…hmmm, I hope Phil Franchise proves Cashman wrong real soon.
Jennifer, you were thinking Kriss Kross yes? I didn’t realize there was a Chris Cross either.
Christopher Cross’s first album is an all-time great and beautiful piece of work. If you don’t have it, I encourage you to try and listen to it. His 2nd album isn’t bad, but just isn’t as powerful or as good as his first.
By the by, I have NEVER heard of him referred to as ‘Chris Cross’. It’s Christopher.
How could anyone ever forget this gem, winning an emmy ranks right up there with “True Grit” beating out “The Midnight Cowboy” for the oscar.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=vqfz1l9s6k0
Get in some fishing if you can!
Old Yanks Fan -
I was just too lazy to type “Christopher” this morning.
“Not this winter. Instead, he focused on “agility, moving, stretching, moving around a little bit better, more lateral movement, that kind of stuff.”
While most MLB players know the benefits of pumping iron, few are hip to more ‘counter culture’ practices such as Yoga, chiropractic, and meditation’. Stengel had Bill ‘Moose’ Skowron take ballet lessons to improve his balance and footwork at 1B.
Few of us (except Mel and Doreen) like to see men in tights, but male ballet dancers are INCREDIBLY strong, agile and balanced.
With all the pulled muscles and muscle fatigue injuries we see, I’m very surprised these ‘arts’ haven’t been incorporated by more teams as part of their physical preparation.
(at this very moment, Mel has her eyes closed and is thinking about Jeter in tights)
Dee, dont get caught up or read too much into specifics.
It’s -6 here, they haven’t cancelled class (they won’t if the roads are clear) and I don’t own a whole heaping lot of warm clothing.
I am going to learn to love frostbite.
Rebecca-
Any word on grad school yet?
Dee yeah that is who I was thinking about. Not that I ever bought there music. But I recall them being the kids that started the trend of wearing low jeans, and even for a while backwards. The things kids do.
TurnTwo, yes guilty here, if I was skilled at reading tea leaves or doing rain dance I would probably start doing it to wish for a championship.
But still I’m not comfortable picturing Moose as a guaranteed starter.
OldYanksFan
I’ve heard of football players doing ballet. Like you said because it helps with agility. It makes sense. It is a little strange for a man to do it. But if it helps them slip a tackle, it is worth it.
Ah, YouTube, it’s like money-free music in return for disk space and cpu power
Jennifer, I remember Kriss Kross was destined to be the new hope after the Milli Vanilli bust! Man now I feel old…
Buddy: Nah, still filling out the application. Almost done, though, just need recommendations and a transcript.
(alas, these are the hardest things to get…)
Godspeed, Pete. You should be there at the time I am writing this, so I hope your room is right next door to the babes.
Anyway,Girardi says he wants Giambi to play first base (according to the article Pete linked); his thinking is that if Jason plays the field, his hitting will be more productive.
I’ve always liked this idea, not thinking Giambi an awful 1b and anxious to have that bat in the lineup. And keeping Jason from the DH position day-in, day-out gives Matsui a bigger role.
1980 albums beat for album of the year out by Christopher Cross and “Sailing” are Billy Joel “Glass Houses”, The Pretenders “The Prentenders”, Bob Seger “Against the Wind”, The Clash “London Calling” to name just a few.
At Nebr, Uni, all us football players took dancing lessons. This was back in the ’50s, I think it helped flexibility and footwork, along with greater strength.
Hopefully, Jeter, Johnny, Bobby etc., will come in to camp much better prepared for the season. 27/08.
Watch Pete’s first post from Fla will be how warm and sunny it is there. While we are all freezing our you know whats off.
That Was Me –
It’s like this year Michael Buble (yech!) beating out Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, James Taylor and even Queen Latifah for Best Traditional Pop Music Album. Granted, it’s not the most exciting category ever, but give me a break - Michael Buble??????!
Rebecca –
How many years have you been at Syracuse??? Not enough warm weather clothing???? Silly.
Or in denial?
Rebecca – Back when I was a YoungYanksFan, I met my wife (now ex) in 1973 at Syracuse. Lived in the girls dorm for 2 semesters. Good times. Still got the ‘Dingleman’ there?
That should have been, not enough COLD weather clothing. duh.
Niiiiice Peter. Enjoy the flight and sunny Flor-ee-dah.
Oh, and I am jealous
Keep us posted on the latest…
Doreen, I watch the Grammies, although I view them as an absolute joke. All the classic songs written by Robbie Robertson’s group were totally ignored during their heyday including “The Last Waltz” one of the greatest rock albums ever. Last night they (The Band) finally receive a little recognition finally winning a lifetime achievement award only to share their moment with the same award being presented to The Beatles. I had to laugh.
“at this very moment, Mel has her eyes closed and is thinking about Jeter in tights”
I’ve seen dudes doing yoga, and they don’t wear tights.
I really do think it’d be a good idea, because it REALLY does help strengthen your core and increase flexibility. It’s probably a hard sell, though.
I think chiropractic is counterproductive.
Doreen: Four, but I spent this time last year in London where it doesn’t get this cold, and in fact, it hasn’t been this cold since my freshman year!
That Was Me -
We were tuning in and out of the Grammies. I knew The Band was receiving an award, ’cause my husband was happy about that, but I had no idea they had to share it with the Beatles. Which means that until this year, 2008, no one thought the Beatles were worthy of a lifetime achievement award? I guess having two compilation albums (Love and Across the Universe) up for awards, decades after having broken up, and two of them dead, someone woke up?
It is a joke. (My references to the Beatles are in no way meant to take away from the accomplishments of The Band. Just - I don’t know how these people think.)
Old Yanks Fan,
I had my eyes closed. But I was sleeping.
Good morning, everyone!
I think we established I’m a little too old to have fantasies. (Do I have that backwards? The older you get, the more you have fantasies?)
Rebecca -
So, an aberration.
It is a bitter, bitter cold day, though, even here and windy!
is this a Yankees blog? Lot’s of talk about grad school and the grammies. Are you guys in the right place?
Rob,
Uh,I mentioned fantasies. Does that count?
btw: Shocked that Amy Winehouse won the big award last night (felt Beyonce should’ve gotten it), but I hope Amy gets her act together. Anyone else thinks of Janice of Friends when you see Amy?
sorry doreen but I happen to Michael Buble
sorry doreen but I happen to “LIKE” Michael Buble, I have his album “Call Me Irresponsabile” on my iPOD and i’m listening to it like over and over. (sorry for my previous post I sent it by mistake)
Ben -
To each their own, right?
I’m sure I like a lot of artists that others don’t. It would be boring if we all agreed.
We used to burn our textbooks for warmth at UConn. Sure, we may not produce a future president (I’m guessing we’re done electing stupid presidents for awhile), but we generally retain all our fingers and toes.
Old Yanks Fan.
I liked what you said about Yoga and Meditation. That is my thing, thats what I do. I absolutely know that Yoga and Meditation could greatly benefit an athlete. Yoga stretches you at a much deeper level. It releases tension at a deeper level in a more permanent way. It can can heal injuries quicker, even prevent them. It does this by moving energy within the body. Stagnant energy is the direct cause of a slump. It is not “mechanics”. Poor mechanics is a result of stagnant energy. Fix the energy and the body will fix itself, the batter will pop out of his slump. Meditation is the tool you use to connect with energy, lifeforce. From meditation a player could “program” how he wants energy to move in his body and how he wants it to effect his game.
Hope this stuff isnt too weird for you folks. I know works and could change a players career.
Uconn? Stupid? The current president graduated from Yale and has an MBA from Havard.
I don’t think I’ve heard any of Amy Winehoues music. I only listen to 104.3. I can’t stand current music.
Not to start a political conversation. But none of the people running for president are prizes. What a joke in a country this big, that we don’t have better canidates.
Doreen-
You’re absolutley right.
Anyways back to baseball, why would Brian Cashman say (indirectly) that Hughes is not guaranteed a spot in the rotation?
Jennifer right wite you on that, maybe you should run, you’ll have all LoHud readers vote and Pete’s endorsement.
Right guy’s??!!
Jennifer –
I hadn’t even heard of Amy Winehouse until this week — she was all over the Star Ledger gossip pages - went into rehab, I think (and I believe that would be ironic, no?).
Actually, saw her performance last night. I would characterize the songs as pretty good, interesting and a bit quirky. They’re not my taste, and I wouldn’t have thought them Grammy-worthy. BUT - she does offer something a little different than most female singers these days.
does anyone here live in NYC and get direct tv? How does it work with YES and getting all the yankees games? I currently have Time Warner, but its so incredibly bad. I’m just scared to give up that free YES channel for MLB extra innings and fear that some/most games will be blacked out.
Can someone provide some insight on this for me?
ben I’m not old enough. I believe you have to be 35 to run.
jennifer thats really bad for the country i’m sure we can do something for you,
Do you think maybe Cashman doesn’t want the rookies to be complacent? To not take a spot in the rotation for granted? But, actually, I’m not concerned with that statement.
Americans say they want smart people to run their government, but each time they have a chance to elect someone who is more smart than photogenic, or more smart than charismatic, they don’t do it. And my feeling is that a lot of very qualified people do not run for presidential office because it’s just not worth it - you have to make really sure you have absolutely no skeletons in your family closet, your entire family and all your associates have to be comfortable with the idea as well, because once you open yourself to that kind of scrutiny it affects everyone who knows you, especially your loved ones. Only the thick-skinned need apply. And that’s my soap box for the day.
Yoga is outstanding for baseball. I have a nephew who catches for a major college program. Against his better wishes, After his finished summer league play last year, I enrolled him in a yoga program for 5 weeks.
It completely changed his outlook on off-season workouts. His flexibility improved. His hamstring issues (a lifelong problem) ended, and he has continued his yoga work (at his school) 3 days per week. Frankly, its transformed his body and he is healthier and fitter than he has ever been in his life.
He talked to a player on the Yankees (whom I won’t name) about his yoga experience in November. That player told him he was also enrolled in yoga classes this off-season.
Come to find out, more and more MLB players are incorporating yoga in their off-season regimens.
Anything that can increase flexibility and endurance, without straining your body, should be considering a must for every player, IMO.
Jennifer:
Do a little more research on the candidates–Clinton, Obama, McCain, Huckabee, Ron Paul. Unless you are a real fundamentalist right-winger, there’s someone out there for you. Everyone has their flaws, sure, but these are a good bunch of candidates, historically speaking.
And I think most people can agree that anyone (animal, vegetable, or mineral) would be an improvement on the current boob we have living at 1600 Pennsylvania.
May I guess was that Damon? (i hope so)
Oh come on sj, give us the scoop who was the player? At least give us initals or a hint. There is nothing wrong with him doing yoga.
Yoga helped Kareem play basketball at its highest level until he was 42. Let’s see if Shaq can emulate that.
SJ44, Please don’t tell us that you’ve heard that Damon does nude yoga.
Actually Johnny is the one I could see doing Yoga and being into the whole zen thing.
Johnny doing Yoga??!! Nah……..Johnnys a Republican. Republicans don’t do Yoga.
Some guys are real private when it comes to their workouts. Some think it gives them an edge on the competition.
Others don’t want their personal trainers taken by other players.
Some are just private, period. Just the quirks of some professional athletes.
I’d rather not divulge the person’s name. If he talks publicly about his workout, I would have no problem sharing.
Absent that, however, I would rather just respect his privacy.
I will say one player who has used yoga in the past and swears by it is Ryan Braun of the Brewers.
That’s your one hint for the day! lol
mike and dog stating categorically that clemens WILL lie to congress.
what jerks.
“Doreen February 11th, 2008 at 9:04 am
Jennifer -
No, I meant Christopher Cross of Sailing and Arthur’s Theme fame. He had exactly those 2 hit songs and won an Oscar and multiple grammies. :)”
You forgot “Ride Like The Wind”.
And 83’s “Think of Laura”.
THAT would be it.
Oh, and the rapping preteens were Kris Kross. With K’s.
If its a 3 day coarse and no dieting involved. Then yes,i could see Damon doing Yoga.
Wow, Potch -
I had forgotten those songs. Wasn’t that “Think of Laura” used in General Hospital???
SJ44 - That would be quite a clue, if it’s who I’m thinking.
Did you see the back page of today’s NY Post? Clemens going around Capital Hill and meeting with Congressmen and giving out his autograph! Conflict of interest for the Congressmen?
mikeeff, well they’ve got a 50/50 shot at getting it right, and while i’d like to believe Clemens myself, they certainly arent crazy to take the bet against clemens.
SJ I never looked at it that way. In that case I understand.
The hint means nothing to me.
Potch shows you how much I listened to that garbage. lol
I was the kid who went against the grain when it came to music (for my age group). Everyone was listening to New Kids, I was into Bon Jovi.
O/T Do you guys think they should’ve ended the Sabres/Panthers game where the guy’s carotid artery was severed? I can understand that what the officials were thinking, but his teammates felt it should’ve been stopped.
OY!!! Breaking news. Schilling’s contract is not insured!!! Red Sox are on the hook!
“Think of Laura”… GH… I believe so. My wife would know for sure.
74 and not a cloud in the sky right now in downtown Tampa.
“I think chiropractic is counterproductive”
Based on experience, I’ll guess there’s tens of millions of people who would disagree with you.
Acupunction and Acupressure would also help these guys.
Do you remember Moose Skowron? Casey made him take ballet and it helped him a lot.
And Mel, tights are for Jetes doing ballet. Wanna watch?
How about Giambi in a tutu?
SJ44
Have you heard anything regarding the knee surgery that Matsui had and the resulting rehab. The only thing that I have heard is that it might not be coming along all that good. I know that the Yanks are sometimes silent on somethings.
“I think we established I’m a little too old to have fantasies. (Do I have that backwards? The older you get, the more you have fantasies?)”
Works for me.
OldYanksFAn,
No thanks. Jeter’s a very nice looking young man, but not my type. Though, he looks very fit!
Giambi? We’re talking sausage casing. No thanks again.
Someone gave a tip the other day about how to search for something or someone specific when there are way too many comments to scroll through…it was one of the f-keys?? Anyone??
Ctrl + F
I haven’t heard anything, good or bad, regarding Matsui’s knee surgery.
I think the fact they see Damon as the everyday LF is evidence the Yankees don’t see Matsui returning to the OF on a fulltime basis.
Whether that is an indication of lingering knee problems, I don’t know.
I think its probably more an idication of just how well Damon took to playing LF last year.
Matsui’s OF defense has really declined in recent years. Putting Damon in left really tightened up the OF defense last year.
John in Ohio -
f3?
Ctrl + F
That was it. Thanks Mel.
And Doreen’s F3 was if you want to Google something without closing the page. Thanks to you, too.
Learning more about this ‘puter everyday….
Ok lets talk about money and how quickly it can come and go when it comes to pitchers. Just heard that Schillings contract is NOT insured so Boston is responsible for all of it and that he has a partial tear of the rotator cuff.
SJ has talked about this many times in terms of it is hard to insure players especially pitchers
SJ- I heard that Matsui didn’t have surgery until Nov, is that true?
Also you are right about his defense. His first year he was pretty good, than it seemed to go down hill from that. And he is actually been pretty horid the last few years.
turn two:
they aren’t taking a bet. they are stating without question that clemens will lie.
Richard C and SJ44 -
You would think that MLB would study Japanese baseball to see some of the differences, and what we might learn from them. Oriental cultures in general are much more holistically aware, and practice ancient arts which are greatly beneficial to health, that many Americans laugh at.
There is no question that the Japanese are preobably healthier then Americans. I would also guess they are equally coordinated and talented. What they lack is ‘brute’ strength. American’s are biggest and stronger which certainly helps to throw 90+ MPH and hit HRs.
As Amnerican have (partially) learned how to build a quality car from the Japanese, they would be smart to look at their physical conditioning practices, as well as some of the ‘arts’ mentioned above.
Ever since he broke his wrist, Matsui has been less inclined to dive for any balls. He lets the ball come to him. While some of that might have been knee problems, I think more has to do with him being afraid of another injury like he had.
gayle,
No wonder the team is pushing Curt to rehab, rather than opt for surgery. They’re far apart on that issue. His surgeon says he need surgery. (Whatever happened to patient confidentiality? Even Curt’s surgeon has a big mouth!)
No wonder the Sox agreed to an incentive laden contract, they knew it was risky.
The RS might try pushing him to go with rehab, but he could have a suit against them if it damages his shoulder further.
Schilling might have caught Pavanoitis!
John in Ohio -
On my computer Ctrl+F and F3 do the same thing! :0
Old Goat,
It’s Schilling Watch! It’s been reported that Schilling got a cortisone shot over the weekend.
Anyone have any insight as to what that means? Does that repair the tear? How long until he starts throwing? How often do you get shots?
I think the Yoga Yankee is A-Rod.
His workout is very core strength and stretching focused. I would have guessed Pilates but Yoga would make sense too.
Actually, Matsui’s D took a nose dive after breaking his wrist. He was always bad going back, but now he is afraid to dive/slide coming in. I can’t blame him, it’s just a fact of life. JD has always been a better fielder, more fearless and has much better speed. I believe he is a major upgrade over Mats.
Just at the end of last year, while blogging with Bronx Banterers, I can remember 3 balls that JD caught. There was always a rash of comments on how no-way would Mats have caught them.
I thought I read on his blog that his surgeon DID NOT diagnose him with a torn rotator cuff.
Old Goat beats me to it!
Doreen,
Thanks for the F3 heads up! The only function key I knew before that was F5. lol.
I learned 2 things off this blog, as far as the computer goes.
f5 and f3.
Yoga is a lot harder than it looks, especially if you’re going to do it correctly. IMO it would be good for any MLB player to include it in their off season (and in-season) training routines. Not as a replacement for more traditional stamina & strength workouts of course, but as a supplement to those. Less injuries and more longevity would follow.
Maybe teams might consider somehow involving that in their team training programs, sort of like an insurance policy against what the Yanks went through last April. They are making an investment of several years time and $$$ in all these guys’ physical abilities after all.
To touch on other subject, generally speaking Japanese are more healthy than Americans in diet and general lifestyle, so of course they have a longer life expectancy. Many of us over here (my outta shape self included) could stand to learn something about health from their culture.
Ironically, however, I think more Japanese people smoke (and smoke more) than Americans. But they are learning from us on that one, more so with the younger generations.
Pavanoitis - Good one!
Ranting Guy,
There’s a mountain village in Japan that has many centarians as residents. Their secret? Yamaimo (a sticky potato) It’s nasty, but they swear by it.
Yes, a lot of Japanese people smoke. And the younger generations continue to puff. I wonder who manufactures their cigarettes? Can’t be Americans. The Japanese population would be decimated by the poisons American tobacco companies continue to put in their smokes.
Any smokers here?
anybody else worried that roger might lose it in the hearing room and throw a broken gavel at McNamee?
Pavonitis? An infection of sudden injury? I like it!
Also, I loved doing yoga in high school gym class, especially when I had gym first period and so totally did not want to do anything remotely exerting!
“I thought I read on his blog that his surgeon DID NOT diagnose him with a torn rotator cuff.”
He didn’t. He diagnosed him with a shredded biceps tendon. He said it looked like a bundle of spaghetti. Eeew.
Cortisone masks pain, I believe. And it reduces inflammation too, I think. It doesn’t actually heal anything, but it should make it so that he’s capable of performing everyday tasks, and perhaps beginning rehab exercises. If those are going to work at all.
Thanks, whozat.
Over on waswatching.com there is a post entitled “In Case It’s Not Cold Enough For You Today”, in which the author suggests that Cash has decided Moose is in the rotation and Joba is in the pen. I don’t think that is how the rotation will shake out, but I thought the post was interesting since the author cites (misinterprets) Pete (in the comments section of that post) as the source for his conclusions.
http://www.waswatching.com/
Pete,
I’ll be at the Astros game in Kissimmee on March 3rd, if you want to help me get a few autographs for my “1996 ball”.
I already have: Jeter, Cone, Strawberry, & Pettite on it. Was hoping to get: Tino, Mariano, Giradi & Jorge, if all of them are at that game.
There is alot more to Yoga than stretching. That is actually just the tip of the iceberg. Yoga is really about energy, lifeforce. Moving it and balancing it within the body. It is about the body-mind-spirit relationship. These players have plenty of trainers and coaches to work with their bodies. They have sports psychologist and motivational trainers to work with their minds. But what do they know about spirit, or, the unit of energy that makes us alive??!! It is a three-way relationship. Acknowledging energy, working with energy, within the three-way relationship, could give them an advantage. Moving spirit freely within their bodies will/can maximize their natural abilities and instincts to play the game.
So Curt hid that from the fans he loves.
He never said such a thing in his entry.
Hoffa,
Don’t know if it’s all true. But it makes sense. If you’re going with a straight 5-man rotation, then you put Joba in the pen, Moose in the rotation. See what he gives you, he usually fades. When some other flame thrower’s ready to be called up, then Joba slides (seamlessly, of course) to the rotation. It’s not where you start, it’s where you end up. Of course in this scenario, where does that leave Moose? Well, that will work itself out as you’ll have injuries, fatigue, and IP limits to work through.

Do yoga and Tai chi accomplish the same things?
I actually think we’d be better off with Joba starting at the begining of the season, and in the pen at the end. It is easier to lessen someones workload than increase it. IF he starts out as a reliever than you have to gradually increase him from 2-4-6-8.
Cupa Joba…
I have DirectTV. It’s great, you have to sign up for YES and then by the MLB package. The good thing is, you can get the replay after a game that is not covered by YES…most of the time.
Hope that helps? 27/08.
Who will be the first of the Big Three to record a CG?
Doreen.
Yeah….very similar. Yoga is IMO more involved. Besides the stretching it involves the breathing exercises, Meditation, proper diet, a certain lifestyle, philosophy. Everything relates back to spirit and how it is moving in the body and how the mind is affecting it.
mel, i’ll go with Hughes…
i’d like to give yoga a try one of these days. stuff like that usually costs too much though.
saucY,
Nice handle!
I dunno. Joba was the best pure stuff to mow through a lineup, but they’re not going to stretch him out just yet. Hughes has a good chance if he doesn’t nibble. Ian is the darkhorse of course.
Mel - Yeah if there were more who didn’t smoke, you wonder what the average life expectancy would be over there. It’s already a few years longer than over here.
Whozat - I’m not a doctor but as I understand it, cortisone is not about masking pain. It doesn’t fully heal something with serious tear damage but it can help healing to some extent. It won’t heal cartilidge (sp?) because that just doesn’t heal, but it will help tendinitis and (to a lesser degree) slight tears. If you have torn cartlidge (just an example) you don’t actually feel the cartlidge tear at rest although you can feel it move, and you feel everything nearby (such as tendons) that’s being irritated by it. Cortisone helps heal the resulting tendinitis but that could easily recur if the offending cartlidge is still there. If all you have is tendinitis, cortisone could solve your problem along with some PT to strengthen (or loosen) the area.
Again, I’m no doctor. I’ve had cortisone shots and they’re helpful. This was just my take on some general conversations with my PT & doctor but I’m curious to know more if any doctors here want to chime in.
Ok… Ladies and Gentlemen
Today’s quiz is up
1)http://www.toursdirectory.com/baseball/rB.jpg
Who is this Yankee and what 2 things is he famous for?
2) How many believe Mel does NOT dream of Jeter in tights?
I’ll take 2 guesses on which Yankee is the secret yoga guy:
A-Rod or Farnsworth.
As I understand, Farnsy is seriously into martial arts. He’s not out there challenging guys to fights, but if some batter wants to rush the mound after a high tight one at 99mph it would be a huge, huge mistake.
I could envision someone who uses martial arts as part their training as using yoga too.
Thats why I was saying last year that if Boston ever seemed intent on playing beanball and starting a melee, NY could bring Farnsworth in even when his control is a little ‘unpredictable’.
Not to pick a fight, but as an insurance policy against it … if someone really wants to pick a fight with Farnsworth, well good luck with that.
“Whozat - I’m not a doctor but as I understand it, cortisone is not about masking pain. It doesn’t fully heal something with serious tear damage but it can help healing to some extent.”
You’re right that it’s not about masking pain. I did some internet reading (on about.com, usually pretty reliable) and it says that cortisone shots are anti-inflammatory — and that’s it. That may promote healing in some cases, and may reduce pain in some cases as well.
Maybe Jorge?

Complete games have pretty much gone the way of the dinosaur. Since 2004, even Santana has only had 6 of them. With the Yankees, Wang is most likely to have one with an economical game.
Yes, Whozat, as I understand it, tendinitis is an inflammation of the tendon, which hurts. It could be caused buy loose cartlidge or something else. When the inflammation goes away, so does the pain. If the inflammation comes back, the pain comes back. But again, I’d defer to a doctor’s word rather than mine.
I think human GROWTH hormone does more healing of things like small tears than cortisone does. It probably does more depending on how you use it too. Not really sure. They’re both prescription strength stuff.
Unless someone has a no hitter going, none of the 3 will have a complete game this year. It’s going to be all about counting innings in Yankeeland this year.
Hint for todays quiz:
His BAT is in the HOF…. but he is not.
I don’t know why I think so, but I think under normal circumstances Kennedy would be allowed to go all 9 innings before Joba or Phil. Unless one of them has a no-hitter going of course.
Maybe it’s that he’s got the most innings (stamina) built up over their first few years, and innings limits seem to weigh heavily on how much these guys will be used.
No-hitter aside, I think Wang would be allowed (if not asked) to go all 9 before anyone else. But that should be obvious.
mel,
I don’t think any of the Big 3 will have a complete game this year, due to a concerted effort to stay within their innings caps. If it does happen this year I think Hughes is the most likely candidate.
Mel I think it would be IPK, because he’s got the least innings restrictions, and because I think he’s going to be capable of pitching very well. Didn’t he have one game last season where he only gave up a few hits?
Just looked it up. September 13, 7 innings, 1 hit, 4 BB, 7 SOs. Lost the game 2-1, 93 pitches. So, I think he can improve on that.
Is the picture Ron Bloomberg? First DH or something.
