Some comments from the Captain

Peter Abraham
February

Here’s the first audio of the new season. It’s from Derek Jeter at the minor-league complex earlier today.

The first part is fine. At the end we sort of had a rambling discussion about the latest bunch of nonsense from John Rocker. Jeter was happy to see Sweeny Murti of WFAN.

I think he was happy to see the rest of us, too. Although I wouldn’t swear to it.

    Sweeny Murti rocks

I love hearing the cage in the background.

Ah, the sweet sounds of spring…

    Jeter > Belichick

  4. Josh

    Pete,
Is that you asking the first question?

  5. Olde Town Glory

Joba’s headed to the pen for 40+ innings to start the season. Anyone know if the Joba Rules will be in effect?

  6. Jake

Well Pete, I think you call a spade a spade, so I doubt Jeter would have anything but respect for you as a writer.

  7. Fran

Capital Hill will be busy tomorrow – besides the steroid hearings, Roger Goodell will be meeting with Arlen Spector re: Spygate

  8. Titan

    Olde Town Glory:

I’m pretty sure they’re going to have new rules for Joba this season, so he can have a smooth transition from the BP to SP after the All-star break.

    Pete,

Thanks. Jeter sounds as confused as the rest of us.

    Olde Towne Glory,

There’s quotes from Joba about the Joba rules at ESPN.

“is there a question in there?”

Gotta love Jeter for knowing how to play dumb about the Rocker stuff but being prepared enough to have a quick comebac about there not being testing in 2000. The boy knows how to work the media.

  11. Say it ain't so

Jeter cracks me up how he tries to play dumb. He makes it funny and always manages to wiggle out of there without actually answering a tough question.

    Pete -

Thanks for the audio. You guys really got a lot out of Jeter, for Jeter, anyway. It’s a bit sad, isn’t it, that “nothing surprises” him at this point.

It’s also very interesting because I’ve always believed that people who are not interested in doing the wrong thing will be able to avoid it, and won’t even necessarily know anything about it. And related to that, if you carry yourself in a way that lets others know you’re not interested in taking shortcuts, you will not be approached. (Of course, not a hard-and-fast rule, but by and large, I’ve found it to be true – if you want trouble, it will find you).

    pat,

You mentioned Andy’s conflicting testimony? I’ve heard he contradicted himself, he sided with McNamee, etc. Rep. Davis has come out refuting all the rumors. And while he didn’t want to reveal the content, he did say that Andy had nothing new to add and that no “baseball player in their right mind wants to go in front of a congressional committee”. So he gets a get out of jail free card.

As Marchand said, they’re trying to put the clowns and elephants back under the tent.

    Pete,

Are the guys in the media as much charmed by Jeter’s “aw shucks” routine as the female reporters are?

  15. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--27/08

They shouldn’t reveal Andy’s testimony. If he gave what he thought was a private deposition, it should remain private.

    End of story.

  16. whozat

“. If he gave what he thought was a private deposition, it should remain private.

    End of story.”

    I don’t think anyone’s depositions were private.

  17. GMAN

Derek Jeter knows how to handle the media better than anyone. Only a fool would give a reporter/distorter any fuel to feed the controversey machine.

  18. Todd

John Rocker? He’s more of a head case than Canseco. What deperate sole went looking for his opinion, or thought it worthy enough to report?

  19. saucY

i know he’s been an ass in the past, but i give him credit for calling out selig, when nobody else seems to be…
