Anyone else think that the chairman looked like Porky the pig, lol?

  2. kd February 13th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Ok, I don’t think I’m in the minority when I say that I am totally sick of the hearing. Let’s change the subject:

Prospect most likely to make an impact this year

    My guess is Juan Miranda

    Anyone care to guess?

  3. Drew February 13th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

I watched the whole thing today…I’ll never be able to get that time back.

  4. saucY February 13th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

so is there anything worth watching when i get home to my tivoed version of the hearings?

should i feel bad for cancelling the recordings of “how it’s made” on the science channel?

  5. randy l. February 13th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

    peter-
it’s getting impossible to follow the comments on the blog with all the new posts . i’d like to read what others think without having to jump all over the place. how about some continuity here.

  6. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--27/08 February 13th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

    KD: Melancon

  7. Marc February 13th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

    KD,

The Tommy John kids: Sanchez, Melancon and Brackman.

  8. kd February 13th, 2008 at 3:41 pm

i thought melancon wasn’t ready this year?

  9. Marc February 13th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

Second half maybe, if they rush him

  10. SJ44 February 13th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

I say Melancon. Brackman won’t pitch at all in 2008.

  11. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex") February 13th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

Melancon hit 94 mph in D.R. already so yeah a late summer call up isn’t far off.

  12. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--27/08 February 13th, 2008 at 3:47 pm

I’ve heard nothing but good about melancon.

  13. SJ44 February 13th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

Interesting stuff re: Pettitte and Clemens.

Evidently, as far back as 2006, Pettitte began feeling that he “couldn’t trust” Clemens, if this stuff hit the fan.

The importance of it? Tells me that Pettitte won’t have any lingering worries or doubts about his deposition. Vis a vie, affecting his ability to pitch this year.

I think the guy went in there, told the truth, and that’s it.

For those who think (ESPN) this will linger with Pettitte all season, I beg to differ.

I think he will be fine because he’s known for a long time he was going to have to come forward and do the right thing.

This is one instance where his religious beliefs will help him in that situation.

  14. murphydog February 13th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

    saucy:

“should i feel bad for cancelling the recordings of “how it’s made” on the science channel?”

lol! My dad watches that all the time.

BTW, there are some great sound bites from the hearing at:

  15. mel February 13th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

    SJ44,

I agree with you about Pettitte’s conscience being clear. It’s becoming more obvious that, although Roger was Andy’s idol, they weren’t as close as it appeared.

I’m not big on religion, but I believe that it really helped Andy do the right thing.

As for the doom & gloom about Pettitte’s performance. I think that’s projection more than anything.

The 2008 Yankees will rally around Andy, have his back, and will insulate him from a lot of the stuff that’s going to hit the fan.

  16. Marc February 13th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

Does anyone know what Girardi said today about the Yankees?

  17. Doreen February 13th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

I watched the whole hearing today. The only part I missed (because I was switching laundry at an inopportune time) was when the attorneys jumped up regarding the nanny information. Talk about bad timing!

Anyway, yes, it’s 5 hours of my life I won’t get back, and there were no revelations, but I am glad I watched it anyway, because I like not having to rely 100% on other people’s perceptions of what went on and what was said. And it was interesting to hear some members of the committee talk to the fact that this particular proceeding was not what they were hoping for; that they weren’t sure what this was going to accomplish; that some were skeptical of the thoroughness of the Mitchell report; and that it didn’t seem right that 89 players were mentioned and only one was there to testify.

I also thought it was interesting as the proceeding was winding down, in an effort to try to get to some conclusion or direction, anyway, a couple of the members asked Clemens and McNamee what they thought overall of the Mitchell report in an obvious attempt to get some closure and some props that at least in theory it was a good idea, and that yes, the congress had accomplished it’s 2005 goal of getting baseball to clean up the PEDs. To justify, you know, the time and money spent on this series of hearing and the report itself.

  18. jay destro February 13th, 2008 at 4:09 pm

Waxman is the ugliest man in government.

  19. SJ44 February 13th, 2008 at 4:10 pm

    Mel,

I had heard, second hand, they were not as close as they were in the past.

In the few times I was around the team last year, they definitely didn’t seem as tight as they were in their previous tour of duty in NY.

I didn’t think anything of it at the time. Upon reflection, perhaps that was an indication that, while they were still friendly, they weren’t the bosom buddies they were in the past.

When you read Pettitte’s deposition, its pretty clear he was of the “freeing his conscious” state.

Kind of like, he wanted to get it all out, then move on with his life.

That tells me that while the first day of ST will be uncomfortable as hell for Andy, he will get though it and it won’t linger with him.

  20. Vigorish Vic February 13th, 2008 at 4:17 pm

The Vegas line has been established at 8 1/2 to 5 that Roger and Debbie will be in divorce court before 2009.

  21. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--27/08 February 13th, 2008 at 4:17 pm

I imagine that Andy may very well have one of his best years. A la Patriots and Spygate, except that Andy won’t have the Collapse of the Century in October.

  22. OldYanksFan February 13th, 2008 at 4:17 pm

SJ44 – It seems obvious that you are some kind of insider. Is it a secret? Can you tell me either how you ‘know your stuff’ or the nature of you (inside) position?

I know there was another guy here who posted as an insider and then disappeared when Pete challenged him.

  23. SJ44 February 13th, 2008 at 4:23 pm

Not an insider. Just know a few people via similar business interests and spend some time around the team during the season.

Believe me, I’m not breakin’ any stories here. Just make some observation as to what I see and try to seperate fact from fiction when the fiction gets really out there on the blog.

  24. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--27/08 February 13th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

After this I’m amazed the two even talk to each other.

  25. OldYanksFan February 13th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

sj44 – ever think about starting your own blog?

  26. OldYanksFan February 13th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

sj44 – ever think about starting your own blog?

  27. OldYanksFan February 13th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

    why shouldn’t Sj44 and I talk?

  28. jmo February 13th, 2008 at 4:32 pm

rebecca, there was no collapse of the century in the super bowl, the best team won!

  29. Boston Dave February 13th, 2008 at 4:33 pm

    Pete

(as usual) randy l has made a good point. I think it would be nice for you to be able to make updates/comments without starting a new thread each time. Its very hard to keep track and have any flow.

  30. Marc February 13th, 2008 at 4:33 pm

    JMO,

    Do you really believe that??!

  31. SJ44 February 13th, 2008 at 4:34 pm

No. No interest in starting my own blog. I don’t have the time to update it or that much to say.

    Rebecca,

Clemens has no choice but to keep good relations with Andy right now.

I doubt you will hear anything negative from Clemens’ mouth re: Pettitte.

Its better to say, “he misunderstood” than to throw him under the bus.

He throws Pettitte under the bus, then I think the DOJ goes after him with guns blazing.

At this point, the DOJ may back off. If he turns on Pettitte, they will go after him, IMO.

  32. jmo February 13th, 2008 at 4:36 pm

    marc
i absolutly believe that. G Men’s offensive and defensive line were clearly superior and the skill players on both sides fought to a draw. the better team won despite what the media expected that to mean.

  33. Marc February 13th, 2008 at 4:40 pm

    Jmo,

Who wins a best out of 5?

  34. mel February 13th, 2008 at 4:41 pm

Ouch! King Felix is now Prince Felix. Bedard’s been slated as the opening day starter.

  35. jmo February 13th, 2008 at 4:41 pm

best of 5 goes to the team with the better offensive and defensive lines (where most football games are decided) add to that the giants are considerably younger than the pats and id take the G Men in 4

  36. jmo February 13th, 2008 at 4:43 pm

brady might not live through 2 more games vs giants def line.

  37. gayle February 13th, 2008 at 4:43 pm

I am currently reading Chuck KNobloch’s deposition and I have to say really make me sad. When he talks about his throwing problem, how Yankee fans characterize it and really how much of an issue it was to him you can just see and it does not make it right how if someone came to him as he says McNamee did and says maybe this will help you he would have been tempted and did take HGH.

  38. randy l. February 13th, 2008 at 4:50 pm

with all due respect to andy pettitte , i’m not crazy about his evolving story of how many times he’s used hgh.

what exactly did pettitte say he absolutely knew about clemens and hgh? i think pettite was talking about talking about talking about something a long time ago. being mistaken is not the same thing as lying.

is someone lying when they take a test and they get an answer wrong? they are not lying. they are simply wrong. pettitte may simply be wrong how he remembers a few long ago discussions. if they were doing hgh and they both knew it, why would they only talk about it the few times andy says he thinks that they mentioned it. why wouldn’t they be talking about it together a lot? it makes no sense to be doing something illegal with someone and not talk about it more than a few times when you spend a huge amount of time together.

andy pettitte seems mostly like a great guy, but he’s got some credibility problems that go beyond lying about hgh use. without getting into it in detail andy has had a well known credibility problem abut infidelity to his wife while in new york. he obviously doesn’t tell her everything.

i’m not crazy about religious people having to confess so much. how about saying what you do and do what you say in the first place.

andy’s idea of honesty and my idea of honesty are two different things. that said, i like andy pettite. we all make mistakes. i’m just saying he shouldn’t be made out to be an infallible saint because he clearly isn’t.

  39. Soapie Sam February 13th, 2008 at 4:53 pm

Will Bud Selig have a beer at the Yankee Tavern with his pals George Mitchell and Henry Waxman after the All Star game ?
Tune in again for another episode of “As the Pinata Squeaks”.

  40. randy l. February 13th, 2008 at 4:54 pm

    observation:
i don’t think some of espn’s sport writers could get into law school. there is a definite iq problem.

  41. LathamJoe February 13th, 2008 at 4:58 pm

“For those who think (ESPN) this will linger with Pettitte all season, I beg to differ”

SJ44: I agree with you for the most part. However, if the DOJ chooses to further investigate Clemens for perjury, I can see Pettite being one of the “star” witnesses. This will, of course, end up in more interviews, depositions, and potential testimony, which will end up taking him away from baseball – mentally and physically.

Right now, IMO, without physical evidence or a creditable witness to Clemens’ PED use, the Government has an unwinnable case. The guaze and needles are nothing, since chain of custody” arguments would destroy that evidence.
Hopefully Government allows MLB to clean up its own mess.

  42. SJ44 February 13th, 2008 at 5:03 pm

I think if the DOJ goes in that direction though, it will be after the season before Pettitte has to deal with this again.

I can’t imagine the Government going forward with a perjury charge, with what they presently have, at this time.

That means, more investigations, enpaneling a grand jury, etc.

Took the government almost 4 years to bring an indictment against Bonds. I can’t imagine a shorter timeframe for Clemens.

  43. bardos February 13th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

i now have doubts (as the yankees must) that andy will pitch this season.

  44. randy l. February 13th, 2008 at 5:12 pm

bill plaschke is one of those low iq guys i’m talking about on espn. bachelors degree from little obscure school. not laser smart.

it’s seems to be a criteria for this kind of sportswriter on tv that their mouths go faster than their brains.

the hall of fame vote should be done by players and coaches. take it away from the writers.

  45. Clare February 13th, 2008 at 5:25 pm

    randy,

I totally agree with you on Pettitte. I don’t think he should get a free pass here. He lied about his HGH use, changed his story on PEDs at least 3 times, and managed to get out of defending his side of the story in public.

I think he’s the one I’ve lost the most respect for today (him and Waxman – since I never had any respect for McNamee in the first place).

  46. EYT February 13th, 2008 at 5:27 pm

if i was from a different country and knew nothing about the political parties, i would have thought that the majority of those with “R”’s next to their name were the ones with integrity and common sense.

Normally, I think Burton and Issa are corrupt fools but they made valid points today and the Democrats looked like jerks.

As someone who has followed and cheered on Waxman’s probes into Halliburton etc. it was very disaappointing to see that he is completely unobjective, petty, power hungry, and plain dishonest.

I agree with randy l that the apology to McNamee, a rapist and drug dealer for some lame a$$ questioning that wasnt tough by any standard was laughable.

  47. EYT February 13th, 2008 at 5:31 pm

and i lost more respect than ever for “true yankee” pettite. what a p()ssy. he flipped on his friend or lied about it, dragged his cheated on wife into the story and did not have the courage to face clemens and the public in court?

give me arod any day of the week than pettite.

and like all evangelicals, the hypocrisy knows no bounds, isnt lying any time a sin? cheating on your wife? cheating at work and therby defrauding your employer?

  48. randy l. February 13th, 2008 at 5:36 pm

    clare-
waxman just totally slammed the gavel down on a female congresswoman acting very grandmotherly for going over her time when she expressed a different opinion than his.

then he apologized to mcnamee for how he wast treated by some of the committee members. mcnamee admitted in the hearing earlier to totally lying about a rape where he was the main suspect.

i don’t think waxman likes women. maybe we have a little misogyny going on here with waxman. if there would have been a trial, mcnamee would have likely been convicted of rape. so why the respect shown to him by waxman? seriously.

anyone know if the statute of limitations has passed on that rape charge that mcnamee admitted lying about it today?

  49. Doreen February 13th, 2008 at 5:38 pm

Follow Pete’s link to the depositions and read Andy’s deposition. You won’t feel as uncomfortable about hit not telling about the second instance once you read it.

I also read Chuck Knoblauch’s interview. He does not implicate anyone but himself, but he does support what McNamee stated in the Mitchell report about himself (C.N.).

Please read the documents. The hearing today was not all-inclusive, because of time constraints, and all the points people wanted to make.

I don’t think Andy threw Roger under any bus. And I agree with SJ44 that I think that this all coming out, and perhaps one press conference, and Andy Pettitte will be able to move on.

But one thing that struck me in both items I read, is how much stress and pain and plain exhaustion these players play with every day. You have to take all of that into account when judging fellow human beings.

  50. Yank** Paranoia February 13th, 2008 at 7:17 pm

if i was from a different country and knew nothing about the political parties, i would have thought that the majority of those with “R”’s next to their name were the ones with some sort of mental retardation or mental illness.
Normally I think Burton and Issa are fools and I was proven correct again today.

Watching Republican after Republican make factual errors, blatant attacks without merit, and engage in petty name calling which had no basis.

and like all evangelicals, their hypocrisy knows no bounds, isnt lying any time a sin? (Dan Burton!) fathering illegitimate kids with staff workers(Dan Burton!) cheating at work in garnering campaign funds(Dan Burton!)

  51. Yank** Paranoia February 13th, 2008 at 7:20 pm

Perhaps people who falsely reported crimes(Issa)…womanize(Burton) etc. should keep to their own closet. I only wish McNamee had called these scumbags out as they tried to hurl their petty names at him.
