Perspective, thy name is Shelley Duncan

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Feb 13, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The only big leaguer to talk to reporters today (so far) was Shelley Duncan.

His take on the hearing? “If it were a cage match between those two, it would be a lot more fun to watch.”

If Shelley runs for Congress, I’ll quit my job and be his press secretary.

    Shelley is the man.

Yeah. I can’t imagine anyone saying they wouldn’t want to hang out with The Duncanstein. He’s a trip.

  3. SJ44 February 13th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

That is too funny and exactly the right perspective for the day!

Its like I have said all along, there won’t be any residual effects on the Yankees. Or Pettitte, for that matter.

At some point, and it looks like we are getting to that point now, its gets back to baseball. That’s all that matters.

  4. Lance Ito February 13th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

The Juice Simpson trial had more credibility.

  5. MackNova February 13th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

    I love Shelley.

Further to comments on this thing I believe that Pettite needs to take the Arod stance of last year when talking about the opt out. He talked to the beat reporters in a controlled setting at spring training said this is the only time I am going to talk about this and pretty much stuck to it through the whole season. Andy should take the same approach. Make himself available to reporters tomorrow or Friday talk about it and say thats it I am not talking about it again. He will get asked other times I am sure especially as you go into cities for the first time, but if he deals with it now he wont have to deal with it or has an out for dealing with it later on in the season.

Also Clemens attorney is now throwing Andy undfer the bus for not showing up at the hearing and having to answer questions about his affidavit. Nice..Dont think the friendship will be friendly anytime soon no matter what Roger says.

    SJ44,

How old is Melancon? Do you think he’s more than a year away from the bigs?

Also, of all the Yankee pitching prospects, who do you think has the power arm the Yanks are looking for so that Joba can get into the rotation?

  8. Josh February 13th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

    Amen!

  9. Bronx Liaison February 13th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Duncan is just living the life

    gayle

I agree, that would best serve Andy.

    shelley is the man!

  12. PEDabuse February 13th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

    So to sum up:

Roger’s best friend and his wife are abusing/experimenting with steroids and HGH but Roger knows nothing about this and he is clean.

    RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT.

  14. Bronx Liaison February 13th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

    Drive:

Melancon is 22 and [barring a setback] could impact the Yankees bullpen this summer. He should not be a year away if he can scorch through the minors like many believe he can.

  16. SJ44 February 13th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

    Drive 4-5,

Melancon is 23. I think he is the arm the Yankees are counting on to replace Joba in the bullpen in the second half of the season.

Its not an unfounded or illogical hope. The kid is that good.

The plan for Melancon is, to follow the warm weather up the coast. Providing there are no health setbacks.

He will start at Tampa. Then go to Trenton when the weather gets warmer, then to Scranton.

If all goes well, I suspect we will see him in the Yankees bullpen after the All Star Break.

Of course, all good plans at times go awry. However, that’s the current gameplan for him.

  17. SJ44 February 13th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

More specifically, Melancon will be 23 on March 28.

Is it me or does the new crop of baby bombers all seem to have a refreshing dose of personality? Jeter, Bernie, Posada and Mariano are pretty business-as-usual types who are pretty guarded when dealing with the media, even as younger players. But Joba, Hughes, Melky, Cano and Duncan are all pretty accessible and are a lot more fun to watch and listen to than their older teammates.

    Will -

The difference between young 20′s and mid-late 30′s is stark when it comes to attitude and openness. It’s a different world these days with social networking, chat, youtube etc…

Phil Hughes’s blog is the best example of how the younger players upbringing / attitude is different than players only 10-15 years older. It’s a cultural shift that should become more prevelant, not less.

And we, the fans, will reap the benefits.

The idea that I can post something on a site like Phil Hughes’s blog that he might read is amazing to me. It’s a fans dream.

hughes hasnt taken the crash davis course on interviews:

Crash Davis: You’re gonna have to learn your clichés. You’re gonna have to study them, you’re gonna have to know them. They’re your friends. Write this down: “We gotta play it one day at a time.”

Ebby Calvin LaLoosh: Got to play… it’s pretty boring.

Crash Davis: ‘Course it’s boring, that’s the point. Write it down.

  22. Khoa February 13th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

This guy has got to be one of the most entertaining members of the team. The cult following he’s got on youtube is ridiculous. He’s pretty much a mascot.

  23. SJ44 February 13th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Fans will only reap the results if the communication is done in a respectful manner.

If, after a bad start, Phil’s blog is filled with hate minded fans writing obscenities and writing, “he’s no Santana”, he will shut down and close himself off to fans.

I saw it with Arod. When he first came up, he was as open a book as could be. Then, especially after the deal with Texas, he began to close himself off more because fans got more and more unruly with him.

I have found most athletes want to communicate and have good relationships with the fans.

But, that cuts both ways. The fans have to hold up their end of it and treat them with some respect. In other words, treat them as they would like to be treated if they were in the players’ shoes.

If that happens, you will see a much more open group of guys. If not, guys will wall up. It happens all over sports these days.

  24. Dan from Mass February 13th, 2008 at 4:33 pm

The only problem with having “fans” show players respect is that all it takes is a few punks (and there are more than a few out there) to make it easier for a player to cut the fans off.

We need to get on Shelley to start writing a blog

  29. Ricko February 15th, 2008 at 10:12 pm

Aside from having a future in baseball journalism when his career ends,Shelley plays the game with all the exuberance of a little boy. He electrifies the bench. He’s just gotta calm down a little on those high fives somebody’s gonna get hurt.

My prediction – Shelley Duncan will become the starting first baseman this year.
