Guidry will be in camp

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Feb 14, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Forgot to mention this before but deposed pitching coach Ron Guidry will take the high road and come to camp as a special instructor.

The Gator did not have his contract renewed when Joe Torre left the Yankees.

The usual cast of characters will be on hand – Yogi Berra, Graig Nettles, Hector Lopez, Stump Merrill, Mickey Rivers, Tino Martinez, Reggie Jackson and Gooose Gossage.

Glad to see these guys didn’t abandon us along with last year’s regular coaches – who I happen to have loved (Bowa especially)

    bowa was my favorite too.

I loved Bowa’s relationship with Cano. I hope the new infield coach can do the same.

Is Hector Lopez really a special instructor in camp?

  5. Stephen February 14th, 2008 at 10:37 pm

No offense intended here, but what exactly does Yogi do at camp? I imagine he’s there as more of a (baseball) spiritual adviser than anything else. Yes? No?

  6. Peter Abraham February 14th, 2008 at 10:41 pm

Stephen: Yogi walks around being Yogi Berra. He talks to Jeter, talks to the manager, signs autographs and even talks to us sportswriters. He’s an American treasure.

  7. Stephen February 14th, 2008 at 11:03 pm

Thanks Pete. Totally agree about Yogi being an American treasure, but I just wasn’t sure he he had any official role. I couldn’t imagine he was giving pointers to Posada or anything.

Yogi being Yogi is fine by me!

What does Stump do at camp? Tell Jeter and Cano about the Alvaro Espinoza/Steve Sax double play combo?

Guidry knows which side of the bread is buttered.

    A class act – Gator!

  11. pat February 14th, 2008 at 11:29 pm

Wasn’t Guidry in charge of Yogi last Spring Training? Now Yogi doesn’t need to make a new friend.

I love seeing Yogi interact with the Captain. I love this picture of them.

I think it was on Old Timers Day last year??

Graig Nettles devotes a lot of time with infielders. When A-Rod came on board in 2004, Nettles spent countless hours with him and extra time after the regular drills were done for the day. It still happens.

Hector Lopez?? Wow. Ralph Houk’s versitle OF, sometimes IF. Number 11, right? He’s gotta be about 80 by now.

it is so cool that the yanks have these guys come to camp. It’s gotta be great for all these young guys to get to meet these guys and ‘rub elbows’ with some great players, hof’ers, world series heroes. It also has to underscore for everyone that they’re with an organization that demands excellence.
when fox owned the dodgers, they lost thier association with the dodger alums and everybody said it just killed the spirit of spring training at vero beach. There are only a few teams that have that kind of cache’ and those kinds of resources. Fortunatly, nobody does it like the Yanks.

    Keep Gator away from CMW!!!!!!

  17. Tex Antoine February 15th, 2008 at 8:04 am

Will Gator be in charge of running the seed-spitting drills?

  18. Mark Alan February 15th, 2008 at 9:21 am

    Long Island Joe…

Near as I can tell, Hector Lopez is there to teach the kids how to ground out into double plays.

  19. rover February 15th, 2008 at 9:22 am

Peter, I have read many things about Yogi, grew up with that era of yanks. Not one time have I ever heard someone truly assign in my mind at least the true value of Yogi. No truer words have ever been printed. He may well be the classiest of all the class acts.

  20. stef February 15th, 2008 at 9:39 am

Wow — Guidry defines the word humility. There are worse examples to follow. How many people would be willing to return under those circumstances?

  21. Tex Antoine February 15th, 2008 at 10:09 am

What circumstances? Being a complete incompetent, losing your job, and still being invited back to your old workplace? I think a lot of people would be “willing to return” under those circumstances.

Mickey Rivers was the first Yankee I knew about back in ’78 when I was 3 years old. When I was, I don’t know, around 5 or so I guess, when people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I said I wanted to be “black like Mickey Rivers.” (My community was fairly homogeneous, I guess)

Will Bernie Williams be present to teach the players how to hit ground balls to second base in situations with men on base?
