Joe Girardi audio from today

Peter Abraham
February
18

Here is Joe Girardi’s interview session with the media after the workout. It’s mostly questions about Pettitte but it should give you a good sense of how he’s dealing with this issue.

The tape cuts off abruptly at the end because the questions were getting so inane that I just shut my recorder off.

Jeter is the worst shortstop? Booooo

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/02.....htm?page=0

  2. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

this is old news already, we all know he’s not suppose to be a gold glove shortstop, Derek is one of the worst up the middle SS in baseball and he 3 hops alot of balls back to 1B thus why the Yankees want a decent 1B man w/ soft hands at 1B

  3. YankeesBen (I'm happy Hughes stayed)

so far Andy sounds pretty relaxed.

  4. Say it ain't so

Very very very good little speech he put together.

  5. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

I’m hearing this on radio he sounds like everyone would want him too. How does it look on T.V. ?

  6. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

reporters trying to get him on the “MISREMEMBER” subject…don’t they know he can’t answer that question especially w/ a trial going on now.

  7. YankeesBen (I'm happy Hughes stayed)

    Brandon just go to MLB.com

  8. YankeesBen (I'm happy Hughes stayed)

As I said he looks pretty cool and relaxed, looks like he wants to put that all behind him.

  9. anti-pettitte

LIVE on ESPN: Pettitte backstab clemens.

  10. YankeesBen (I'm happy Hughes stayed)

I think he’s doing good so far, actually he gave some pretty good answers.

  11. YankeesBen (I'm happy Hughes stayed)

It’s sounds like Andy wants to leave Clemens behind him too.
PETE GREAT QUESTION!! I think you can run for congress. LOL!
    Why so quiet here today?

  12. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

dammit I walked to the restroom what question did Pete ask ?

  13. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

when he said Brian gave him the heads up, was it McNamee or Cashman ?

  14. YankeesBen (I'm happy Hughes stayed)

    Brandon-
you didn’t miss anything, Pete asked if besides the times he admitted, he ever took PEDE’s?

  15. YankeesBen (I'm happy Hughes stayed)

    Brandon-
    sounds like McNamme

  16. dana

I love And Pettitte – I think he’s handling this garbage pretty well but can the media please stop asking the same questions over & over again. Enough already!

  17. YankeesBen (I'm happy Hughes stayed)

I have one question for him, If he felt uncomfortable the first time why did he took again in ‘04?

  18. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!!

Nice to hear that Jorge, Mo and Jeter are there.

  19. GDS

He took again out of pure desperation, and thought it would never come out, and that is was between his father and himself.

  20. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

thanks YB, I’m surprised how good Andy is doing in this Q & A

  21. Mike

Has Austin Jackson reported to camp yet?

  22. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!!

Ben he answered that. He said he was desperately.

  23. YankeesBen (I'm happy Hughes stayed)

I give him an A+, He sounds very open and honost

  24. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!!

    Oops desperate.

  25. rodg12

Is anyone live blogging this so I can get an update of what he’s said so far?

  26. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!!

Ugh can anyone tell me why http://deleted keeps appearing in website. I never typed anything. :(

  27. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!!

rog, it is on espn news and Yesnetwork.

  28. Jake

I got nothing but love for you Andy. You’re still a hero of mine, that doesn’t change.

  29. rodg12

Thanks jennifer. I’m watching it now…..just started about 2 or 3 minutes ago. Was wondering if there was a quick way I could catch up.

  30. mel

I was in the car, so I was trapped with Steven A. Smith. He cut to the prepared statement portion. TG I was alone because I cried.

Then I snapped out of as soon as the fingers on the chalkboard cut into the Q&A portion.

I guess I’ll have to wait patiently for Pete’s audio.

Andy’s right. It’s not fair for him to be stuck in a tug of war between two grown men. He shouldn’t have to answer about Roger/Mac unless in a courtroom or grand jury. For heaven’s sake, this is not a matter of national security. This is not the secret that’s going to unlock the cure for cancer or solve the energy crisis.

  31. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!!

    I’m not sure sorry.

  32. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--27/08

Mike: No idea, but I think mandatory reporting date is tomorrow for everyone else? Correct me someone if I’ve got it wrong, please!

  33. Catjya

Unfortunately because this is about the Yankees,it will be fodder for the Yankee haters throughout baseball.

Talk about drama the Yankees offseason has been off the hook crazy this year. The Arod situation,Mitchell report, all the Yankees listed therein, almost losing Phil Ian Melky et al for Santana.

What could the actual baseball season be like? One could only hope for the best.

  34. Fran

I think that Andy has been great in answering all of these questions. He looks relaxed and as ready to get on with the season as we all are.
I thought it was interesting when he said he told the Steinbrenners that if they thought he was a distraction to the team they could tear up his contract. He said he is not in this for the money but to win another championship.

  35. YankeesBen (I'm happy Hughes stayed)

Andy is a 1000% sure that Roger did steroids.

  36. Fran

You are right Rebecca – the rest of the team reports tomorrow. Full squad workout on Wednesday.

  37. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!!

I am so genuinely happy that Mo, Posada, and Jeter are there.

  38. mel

Watching on the telly now, is this live?

  39. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!!

    Yes it is still live.

  40. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!!

Andy wants to continue to do this, Jason is looking to cut it off.

  41. Spike Owen

    Jake,

Andy is a hero of yours? I would have said maybe that would make sense before all of this. But maybe you should look at guys who are fighting crime or fighting fires or fighting for our freedom. I’ve been a huge Pettite fan since he came up through the minors, but come on man, a hero?

  42. YankeesBen (I'm happy Hughes stayed)

it looks like he enjoys to get this stuff of him.

  43. Steve (Cashman sucks)

Pete Abe is asking two questions. They are giving him preferential treatment.

  44. jay destro

    Pete gets the last question

  45. DMan

    Two questions for Pete, haha.

  46. YankeesBen (I'm happy Hughes stayed)

Spike I think he means a baseball hero, Thats how I look at him, I don’t need a baseball player to be my hero or role model. I just enjoy watching him play.
PETE it is true WE LOVE YOU! LOL

  47. #9

Hey – Pete got to ask 2 questions…

  48. rodg12

Two question for Pete. What was with that comment though? Little busting of the chops by Jason?

  49. matt

pete is a cheater getting 2 questions

  50. Rocco

i missed the 2nd question… what did he ask?

  51. al arodien

Wow YOU are the best reporter covering the yankees! Every body saw it NATIONWIDE on tv! WOW!

  52. Catjya

Andy had Roger’s poster on his wall when he was a teenager,as someone he looked up to and admired. When Roger ever decides to ~fessup~ Andy is the guy Roger should look up too,it took character to tell the truth and face the fallout to follow.

Andy had to learn the hard way ~bad associations spoil useful habits.I think Andy’s got the point now!

  53. Phil

Are you accusing Pete of using HGH? :)

  54. Mark McCray

ONLY REPORTER WITH 2 QUESTIONS!!! YEA PETE!!!

  55. mel

I lost it on Pete’s last question. He asked which Steinbrenners he talked to today. He said he spoke to George, Hank, and Hal and they offered their support.

  56. YankeesBen (I'm happy Hughes stayed)

Great job by Pettitte. Here is hope he does so good with his season.

  57. Say it ain't so

I think he did a fantastic job. Too bad Jason kept trying to end it, looked like Andy was ready to answer any question presented.

  58. murphydog

Didn’t Ducis Rogers get to ask two questions also?

  59. Marc

Stay on the YES for Mike and the Frouit Loop. Dog will probably say that Pettite wont pitch well now and the Yanks are doomed.

  60. pat

Pete was right. Ducis Rogers got 2 questions too.

  61. mel

Didn’t watch the whole thing, but that seems to be a much more complete job than Paul Byrd, Paul LoDuca, and obviously Jason Giambi did.

Pete, I know you feel there’s a story here, but I hope you don’t judge Andy too harshly. He’s a good man.

  62. murphydog

    Pete:

You asked one of the toughest questions. You nailed him down to whether or not this is it for HGH or anything else. Good for you.

  63. Say it ain't so

Don’t look now, but ESPN is actually talking baseball and not ped’s!

  64. SJ44

Only thing worse than media moralists are fan moralists.

Some of you need to get off your high horses.

Unless, of course, you have never done anything in your life you regret.

If you haven’t, more power to you.

Realistically though, what we learned today is the guy is a human being, made a mistake and has paid the price for it.

He didn’t kill anybody and, no matter how much folks want to criminalize this, he isn’t a criminal.

He’s caught in the crosshairs of an incomplete report that needed “star power” in order to give it weight.

He isn’t the only guy who has used HGH. He also won’t be the last guy who uses HGH.

You aren’t going to solve the PED issue by outing and embarrassing players.

All you accomplish is the opportunity to give media and fan moralists a soapbox.

Mitchell got his pound of flesh. Now, its time to play baseball.

  65. Y's Guy

    sj44
“You aren’t going to solve the PED issue by outing and embarrassing players.”

couldnt agree with you less. as andy just said that anyone who sees what he and roger went through is likely to stop using right away.

until a decent testing program is in place, outing and embarrassing players is the main thing stopping them from using.

  66. dana

SJ44 you are by far the most knowledgable poster on this board. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that I find myself scrolling down to your responses on all of Pete’s blogs. It’s really tiresome to read through a lot of the nonsensical messages that get posted on here sometimes. Thank god you remain an intelligent voice of reason. Thank you for your input & keeping many of us sane.

  67. SJ44

Pete is more interested in doing his job than being a media moralist and he ended up asking the best question of the day.

Now, we can finally get to baseball!

  68. jmo

thats it, the pettitte/hgh issue is over and its on to the 2008 season.

  69. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--27/08

Just remember this: In 2004, the leading reason for those voting for the winner in the US presidential election cited “moral issues” as their cause.

  70. rodg12

Y’s Guy – Come on now. Not everyone cares as much about people think of him as Pettitte does. You could also argue that outing the players has the reverse effect. Wow, look Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte were on the stuff, man they were dang good. I think I should get on it too!

  71. SJ44

Y’s, you talk to anybody in the drug prevention field and they will tell you embarrassment is the least likely way to solve the problem.

Yes, Andy said that. But, he also had no intentions of EVER talking about his father and their usage of HGH until he was under oath.

So, did it discourage his usage of HGH after 2002? No.

He got desperate again, because his elbow was killing him, and took another round of HGH.

So, how exactly did embarrassing him discourage usage?

It may make for a great topic on talk radio or ESPN. However, if you want to discourage PED usage, its not going to come from embarrassing people.

Its as useless a strategy as, “Just Say No” was to recreational drug usage.

You know how you combat it besides more testing? Education programs.

Andy said time and time again he wasn’t sure of what HGH could or could not do. He was told by his trainer it can heal tissue damage. That was the extent of his knowledge of HGH.

Do you think if the Union and MLB had a joint education program to educate its players and trainers on HGH, that wouldn’t be more helpful.

Or, how about working with Glaxo Smith Kline, as the ATP has done in the tennis industry, to produce a line of supplements, totally free of the crap most of the over the counter supplements contain, for its membership?

Those are just two examples of how better to handle the PED issue instead of outing and embarrassing players.

While nice theatre, its simply not a long term solution for this problem.

  72. mel

Guess who rode shotgun today and “apologized”? Roger Clemens? No. Miguel Tejada? No. Eric Gagne.

Don’t let anyone tell you that no Red Sox were named. lol.

  73. DC

how many times have we heard “past a diving jeter.” I am a huge fan of the captain but he should be headed to the outfield or 1b within the next 3 seasons.

  74. jmo

i say too bad, you cheated, if you get caught, you deserve it. i like andy but too bad. and you’d better believe that if his elbow hurts again this season, he wont be taking any hgh.

  75. mel

Glad to see Andy’s teammates support him. Hope they continue to do so on the field. No more blown games and lack of run support please!

  76. YANKEE BIAS

If anyone missed anything, I live blogged the PC here:

    http://mybaseballbias.com/2008.....onference/

    Pete asked two questions!

  77. rodg12

Thanks Yankee Bias. I was asking if anyone was live blogging earlier and turns out you were. Much appreciated.

  78. YANKEE BIAS
