A Yankees Blog by Journal News beat writer Peter Abraham

Thanks for reading, Neil’s grandmother

February

Just got this e-mail, had to share:

Hi Peter. Great blog. It just goes to show that the world needs a daily publication about the Yankees. My 85-year-old grandmother is a much more serious fan than I am (she watches all 162 games) so I bought her a Presto and forward the e-mail version of your blog to her every day. - Neil.

Newspapers are blogging in a last-ditch attempt to attract younger readers. I’m all for it. But the more I blog, the more I realize that people simply want information in a timely matter, no matter how old they are.

So thanks for reading, you and all the rest of the grandmothers and grandfathers out there.

    That’s just plain cool.

my grandmother is afraid of technology.

i think she’s afraid of any tv that doesn’t have fake wooden drawer panels and handles on the front of them. her tv is basically a stand for picture frames, which doubles as a way to watch baseball and golf when they’re on.

I am a grandfather who enjoys this blog. After my first 40 years living in Westchester, I moved to Virgina 20 years ago. I still follow the Yankees. I go to Camden Yards everytime the Yanks come to town, and I subscribe to the MLB-radio package to listen to those games not on ESPN or Fox. Peter supplies excellent information with a quality writing style that I enjoy very much.

    Douglas Roy -

I’m an expat in VA, too, and subscribe to MLB.tv. The picture is pretty good, and the only time it’s blacked out (other than certain weekend games) is when they play the Orioles. But then those games are usually broadcast on MASN or MASN2, so we still don’t miss them.

As for my grandmother, she has this blank look when she sees my laptop. LOL

    Hi Neil’s Grandma!!!!

My grandma reads too - I got her hooked last year. It’s especially helpful during the long winter months when there’s not much Yankee news in the local paper. Thanks, Pete.

Incredible. These grandparents are more tech savvy than my much younger wife! Great stuff.

My grandmother was a rabid Yankee fan, rest her soul. It was one of the things that kept us close. I’m sure that I could have turned her onto your blog if she was still around. Blessings to all the grandmas and grandpas out there.

“people simply want information in a timely matter, no matter how old they are.”
I agree. It’s very odd to me that newspapers don’t understand the progress of the sharing of information when they’ve been such a big part of it in the past.

    What is a “presto”?

I’m a grandfather in Syracuse and while you are certainly right that timely news is vital, don’t sell yourself short, Pete. The audio clips are great, and apparently I’m a sick puppy, cause frankly, I enjoy your humor and your outlook on what’s important and what’s ridiculous.

    Bob

PS, one of these days I’ll have to dig out that ARod spreadsheet I sent you last year and see how it compares to the actual contract.

    This reply is to JerryD:

You asked, “What is a Presto?” I work at Presto and am a Yankees fan so I thought I’d answer your question.

Presto is a service that allows people who don’t use computers to receive email, photos and documents without a PC or Internet connection. For $9.95 a month, Presto subscribers get their own email address, unlimited mail, and automatic delivery of digital photos and PDF documents. They receive their mail through a device called a HP Printing Mailbox which connects to their existing phone line. Then, up to five times a day, the mailbox calls out to the Presto service to collect and automatically print waiting mail.

Presto is not a fax. It prints email in high resolution, full color. It rejects any spam or junk mail from anyone who is not an approved sender. And, a PC-savvy relative of the Presto user can even monitor ink and paper status online! What’s more, Presto Newsstand is included in the subscription price, which is ad-free opt-in content including articles, puzzles, recipies, etc. The HP Printing Mailbox costs $149.99, and again, the Presto Service is $9.99 a months with no commitments or contracts.

Tens of thousands of people love Presto and you can learn more here:

    Presto Website: http://www.presto.com
    Online Community: http://www.prestoplace.com

    Thanks for asking.

  12. Neil

Wow, what fun! I’m the Neil who wrote to Peter. Thank you Peter and everyone else. My grandmother will get a kick out of this thread. Regarding Presto, my grandmother didn’t like any of the “Newstand” newsletters. The problem is that the variety is waaaaaay too limited to accommodate the tastes of every Presto owner. So not surprisingly Presto’s killer app is email from people you know. News of PDF attachments is welcome as that opens up a world of possibilities (like sending the Yankees’ season schedule or all these comments). This must be a new feature as it did not exist six months ago. I wish the guy from Presto had restrained himself a bit. Sorry I didn’t get here before he did. Back to baseball!
