Some beat writers will do anything to get some time off. That tricky Tyler Kepner of the Times arranged to have his fourth child, a daughter named Rory, earlier this month.
T-Kep will be in the house for the first time tomorrow, which is good news. He’s a great writer and a better guy. How he keeps track of four kids and two dogs while covering the team and constantly watching The Simpsons, I have no idea.
The Times has been using Maureen Down and William Kristol on the beat, which has been interesting. They’ll head back to D.C. now that Tyler is in Tampa.

Keeping track of 4 kids is easy, Just do what I do… Have your wife do it ;)...Good thing the wife doesn’t read these blogs
VOII, it’s probably a good idea then that we’re not married
Rebecca,
I am sure my wife is the only woman on the planet who will put up with me. How she does it with 4 kids (5 if you count me) I’ll never know…
The Simpsons is a great show.
Congrats to Tyler and his wife! 4 kids must be a handle.
What the heck? Maureen Down and Bloody Bill Kristol reporting on sports? Where’s Keith these days,,,,,
its too bad that i refuse to read the times for their shameless agenda beyond the editorial pages. its been a while since i last bought that paper and this mccain mess makes me happy i don’t. Besides, i’m so busy refreshing PeteAbes blog i don’t have time for any others. Keep up the good work!!!
Found a great article on the idea that Juiced balls not juiced players may be the reason for the HR surge after the strike…

Back to my recommendation that everyone go on the tour before the stadium is gone.
There are tons of dates where there will not be tours. So book now for the available dates.
http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/nyy/ballpark/stadium_tours.jsp
”*During the Final Season of Yankee Stadium, tours will not be available on the following dates: May 3, 4, 8, 17, 18, 24, 25, June 5, 7-9, 19, 21, 22, July 4-6, 19, 20, 23, 30, August 2, 3, 16, 17, 28, 30, 31, and September 13 and 14th.
*Due to additional events taking place during the dates of March 17-April 7, April 16- April 23, and July 10-17, there will be no tours available.
*The following dates are for when the Clubhouse will NOT be available during the 2008 Stadium tours: April 8, 29, 30, May 1-9, 16-26, June 3-10, 16-23, 27-30, July 1-9, 18-24, 28-31, August 1-4, 14-18, 25-31, September 1, 11-19.
The Yankees reserve the right to cancel all or part of a tour. If a tour date must be made up as part of a postponed game all tickets will be refunded. All sites on the tours are subject to current availability. Dates are subject to change without notice.”
pete was kidding about kristol and dowd. its been jack curry and joe lapointe. pretty funny
I know that too. I know pete has left side to him too.
Someone posted that there’s going to be a televised ST game on Sunday. Anyone know where I can find a schedule of televised games? Or is it just on the Yankee site (which is messing up my computer every time I try to go to it right now)?
http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=nyy&m=3&y=2008
This is the tv schedule.
Nevermind I got it to work. It’s right here if anyone else wants it
http://mlb.mlb.com/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=nyy
Thanks Jennifer. Of course as soon as I ask for help, that’s when the freaking site works again.
Billy Kristol should go back to being a stand up comedian. His political ideas are comical.
Geez I just checked out the prices for the Yankees games V the Marlins and their prices are crazy!! It is a ST game!!
Jennifer: I know. I wanted to go to a ST game last year and they’re just expensive.
I’m not terribly useful tonight. My apologies.
Maureen “Dowd” and congrats to Tyler.
Im probably going to pay $70.00 to watch the Yankees play the Astros a week from Monday in Kissimee Florida. This is of course on stubhub.
It is more expensive than regular Yankees st games. They are calling exhibition games, i guess that is how they justify charging insane prices. (this is for the games in dolphin stadium.)
You checked the ‘stros site?
Jennifer
I checked their site, backon January 27Th when their tickets when on sale…..I would like to sit in sec 119 which is down the rightfield line, near the Yankees clubhouse.
Good luck! It annoys me so much to see tickets going for 4x face value.
Hey Pete, have you seen Betemit around?
You’d think someone would have commented if he hadn’t shown up, but he didn’t appear to be photographed on picture day, and haven’t seen him in any other photos.
Bob Sheppard signed a 2 year extension, that will run through his 99th birthday. Wow!
That’s awesome for Mr. Shepard!
However, as I hear it’s mildly beneficial to go to sleep every once in a while, I will now proceed to do so.
Shepard never ceases to amaze me. I wish I could be down in Florida. I have the privledge last year, but not so much this year.
There’s always next year I suppose.
The guy that will make Joba a starter
according to the schedule the first sighting of Yankee baseball on YES will be next Sunday at 1:15 against the Phillies.
Whoooo Hoooooo!!
Nice article on Eric Duncan
http://www.nj.com/yankees/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-2/1203831467252170.xml&coll=1
You know it’s Sunday morning because Mike Lupica has written yet another negative column on the Yankees. Today’s targets are Hank and Pettitte. Funny how he never said much about his beloved Mets after they choked their 7 game lead. It’s even funnier how every columnist on the News has a reader’s comments section except Mikey Napoleon.
That’s enough negativity from me too. Thanks Prete Funk Era for the link on Eric Duncan. It would be nice to see Duncan make a statement this Spring and get back in the mix.
The Star Ledger article about Melancon is worth reading too. Melancon needs to pitch more professional ininngs before he’s ready for the majors, but before long he could be Joba’s ticket to the rotation.
Regarding Lupica, couldn’t agree more.
I read more articles in the Daily News after I had posted here about Lupica not having a comments section . Readers complained on 2 different columns today in the News about Lupica being too cowardly to take comments himself.
Joel Sherman’s column in the Post about Derek Jeter’s fielding has some merits. Jeter is not the worst shortstop in baseball, but his defense isn’t the best part of his game. The problem with the study by the 2 Penn profs is that 1) it doesn’t take into consideration scouting reports on positioning 3) instincts (Jeter’s strong suit) and 3) they are both self avowed Red Sox fans that delighted in their “findings” way too much to be taken seroiusly.
The good news is that Derek knows he needs more lateral maneuverability and has worked hard in the off season to improve it.I’ll take Jete’s over Clint barnes ( deemed the “best” anytime.
Eric Duncan may have been rushed but he’s still at some point should have shown he can hit at any level. He hasn’t done that. The good hitting prospects should be able to hit anywhere at any level. If you to put Jesus Montero at AA when the season starts there’s no doubt in my mind that he could put up some impressive numbers despite skipping 2 or 3 levels.
Speaking of the morning’s newspapers, I was bemused to see that the feature story in the NY Times this morning was a comprehensive article on…The Pittsburgh Pirates! And why should I care? I don’t know. I didn’t read it.
They did have an article on Joba, too, but that was on page 2.
Doreen,
The Joba article is fun though. The kid sounds like a hoot. I loved when he asked Mike Mussina, after Mussina tried to ignore hime, if the first thing to go when you get old is your hearing.LOL
The Yanks are going to benefit from having a looser clubhouse. In the past seemed they seemed too tight. Kevin Brown, Gary Sheffield and Randy Johnson weren’t exactly a lot of laughs.
Drive 4-5
It WAS a good article! Joba is a breath of fresh air. The thing is, all those people you named were about themselves, and Joba is not. That’s the biggest difference – that and he’s positive energy, not negative energy.
You see Sheff mouthing off already to start the season. He can’t start a season without bringing attention to himself, and it’s always, always, always the negative kind.
Doreen,
I cringed when I read Sheffield’s most recent comments.
From ESPN:
“Gary Sheffield put himself in the spotlight again, and the Detroit Tigers’ slugger enjoyed every second of it.
“My family has been trying to get me to walk away for a while now because they don’t like the negative stuff that comes my way. I love it,” Sheffield acknowledged. “I try to explain it to them, but they think that’s some psychotic thing.”
Yikes..
The NY Times using veteran political hacks like Kristol and Modo to cover Yankees campe, eh ? I don’t find that “interesting”, so much as very telling as to the current (pathetic) state of the NY times.
That is just laugh out loud funny. Though it does keep Modo from banging out one of her fact-free columns, so that’s a good thing, at least.
The Times owns a piece of the redsocks, so if they have any evil agenda — other than Judy Miller and Mike Gordon’s bs about WMDs in Iraq — that’s it.
“Speaking of the morning’s newspapers, I was bemused to see that the feature story in the NY Times this morning was a comprehensive article on…The Pittsburgh Pirates!”
Doreen:
I haven’t read the NY times article either. Other than the terrible transactions they’ve made over the past 10 years, perhaps the NY times is covering the significant number of former Yankees invited to Spring training:
Jaret Wright
Doug Mentkiewicz
Raul Chavez
TJ Beam
Kevn Thompson
See now, Latham Joe, I’m going to have to give in and at least browse the article! Darn it!
Latham Joe –
It’s talking about the new management of the Pirates, and I didn’t see one ex-Yankees name in the article!
Drive 4-5 –
I like the way Sheffield played as a Yankee, but I am grateful he’s no longer here.
Thanks, Doreen. You’ve saved me the effort in reading it.
I owe you!
in reference to jeter and that study. i can only say, it is why they play the games.
