I played high school ball many years ago and one of the things that was stressed was fundamentals. When a player doesn’t execute a bunt, doesn’t hustle down to first, misses the cut-off man or throws to the wrong base, that gets me upset. At the major league level, it’s inexcusable. That a player strikes out in a key situation or a pitcher gives up a homerun or fielding errors are commited, that is all part of the game and doesn’t bother me at all. I may gripe, but I give the opposing team credit. Players on both teams are just trying to do their jobs .

Very interesting theory about whether those who have played baseball or other sports may be more critical of those “pros’ that have made it. I played baseball and softball for 40 years. I had the pleasure to play against a few that made it (Ernie Fazio, Gary Holle, a retired John Podres) and some that played at various MilB levels. Although I can be critical of MLB players’ performances (through frustration as a Fan) and offer my useless analysis, I personally have a deep respect for ANY player that has ever made it to the professional ranks in any sport. There is such a huge gap in the level of talent and dedication between those individuals who’ve reached the “top of the ladder” and those that have played the sport for recreation or even at the MiLB level, but have never made it. If you’ve played baseball at any level above Little League, you can begin to appreciate just how talented these guys are.
