Damn you, Marion Cotillard

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Feb 25, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

I finished in a five-way tie for second in the press box Oscar pool last night. I lost because I selected Julie Christie for Best Actress.

But the important thing is that all 23 people in the United States who saw La Vie en Rose are happy now.

Headed down to the clubhouse now. Back later with some notes.

She shocked everyone, but from what I have heard, she basically channeled Edith Piaf in her performance.

    She supposedly was QUITE good.

On another note, Day Lewis and Bardem were TOTALLY deserving. (Swinton was pretty damned good too) I am guessing that Bardem’s Anton Chigurh will go down as one of cinemas all-time great bad guys.

Pete, I saw La Vie en Rose, and many people I know saw it too so got to be more than 23:-) Cotillard was amazing. Totally deserved. My only problem is that every year the best actress winner always goes to someone who “impersonates” someone, instead of creating a completely original fictional character.

  3. Pete February 25th, 2008 at 9:45 am

Javier Bardem was deserving but I have to say Casey Affleck got overlooked for The Assassination of Jesse James.

Those same 23 people were the only one to watch the Oscars as well. :)

“But the important thing is that all 23 people in the United States who saw La Vie en Rose are happy now.”

Those would be the 23 members of the Academy that HAD to view the film.

If you’ve never heard Edith Piaf sing you owe it to yourself to give it a try. It’s um, unique.

And depending on how you feel about movies about people who lived desperately twisted and unhappy lives, you might even like the movie. But I can’t be objective. I dated a woman some years ago who used to listen to Piaf. (Yes, the CDs were in French. No, the woman I dated was not French). No matter how hard I tried to convince my friends that a woman born and bred in NY who listened to Piaf was “advanced,” I got the same cold stare. To this day, I still twitch when I hear old Edith warbling away.

  6. Karma February 25th, 2008 at 9:57 am

Was Daniel Day Lewis any good? from the clips it looks like he recycled his “Gangs” performance, which was wildly overrated.

  7. Karma February 25th, 2008 at 10:00 am

    M-dog,

    why would a Piaf-jonez be any more “advanced” than a Brit-punk-jonez or a Bluegrass-jonez??

  8. frenchie February 25th, 2008 at 10:07 am

    karma

stupeed amerecon! dont you know that all that ezz francchh ezz advonced!

  9. murphydog February 25th, 2008 at 10:11 am

    Karma:

That’s the point, my dear friend. It wasn’t more advanced; I was gravely mistaken.

The end result, you should know, was an intervention by several of my friends who kidnapped me to our favorite Irish bar and kept me there until I had enough Guinness and U2 to come to my senses about Piaf girl. I can never repay them.

I was extremely happy for her. Her reaction to winning was so genuine and wonderful. It’s something the Oscars have been missing for years now. She was emotional yet not Halle Berry crazy up there.

  11. Jake February 25th, 2008 at 10:14 am

Uh, actually, Le Vie en Rose was a great film. Cottilard did a fantastic job and deserved the Oscar.

Check it out, you will be surprised.

What’s wrong with listening to Piaf? I have a number of her albums (on vinyl, no less) and she’s in my regular rotation. She’s amazing, even if I can’t understand what she’s saying. Then again, you don’t really have to. You can just listen to her and know what she’s singing about.

Pete, I got 7 out of 16 (excluding the technical awards), which for me was good since I only thought I’d get 3, but I most likely was in last place too, so you’re not alone.

While I wasn’t able to see the film (gotta love that select cities stipulation) I was rooting for Marion to win. I’m a huge Piaf fan and was amazed from the clips at how she was able to pass for her.

Karma-I actually liked Daniel Day-Lewis’ ‘Gangs’ performance, and it seems like while he may have recycled the American accent he used, it seems unlikely that he used the same performance for ‘There Will Be Blood’. That was a hard category, though seeing as Viggo Mortensen and Johnny Depp gave excellent performances as well.

I thought that ‘There Will Be Blood’ would win Best Picture, since ‘No Country For Old Men’ won Best Screenplay and Director.

Did anyone register for the Premium Games??????? Anyone get an email???????

  17. Drew February 25th, 2008 at 10:21 am

Pete, you fool. I’m no movie expert and I haven’t seen most of the ones nominated. But where did you hear anything about Julie Christie’s performance? She didn’t have the Oscar ‘Buzz’. You’ll just have to go watch Dr. Zhivago a few more times.

  18. murphydog February 25th, 2008 at 10:22 am

I… drink…. your MILKSHAKE! I DRINK IT UP!!!!!!

  19. Tseng February 25th, 2008 at 10:23 am

Great as her performance, who the heck in America heard of La Vie En Rose or watched it before tonight? Not too many. It’s nice that she perfectly channeled Edith Whoever. My question is… who is that? Why should we care?

My buddy can perfectly impersonate John Twill, but who is that? (no one famous) Most of the time, the Academy is an awards show for the elitist Hollywood movies that are made for and watched by academy voters.

I had heard of La Vie En Rose before the awards ceremony but I didn’t really know much about it. As soon as I saw, during the nominations, that it was A) in another language and B) looked like a historical biography type thing, I knew she would win and lo and behold, she did.

I’m not bitter at all. Being a copycat gets old after you’re a toddler, though.

  22. Bill February 25th, 2008 at 10:58 am

Yeah, they are supposed to have an online drawing today.

    Dunno what time…

  23. Bonnieh1048 February 25th, 2008 at 11:07 am

I am a diehard Yanks fan from birth. I am also one of the 23 who saw La Vie En Rose. Marion Cotillard totally deserved that award. Julie Christie did too. Maybe people were afraid that Julie would go all political at the podium. She was going on about Guantanamo while doing the red carpet thing. Makes you wonder. I thought that Daniel Day-Lewis was absolutely mesmerizing in There Will Be Blood. They keep showing that one religious scene, which is not necessarily representative of his performance.

  24. Karma February 25th, 2008 at 11:33 am

    M-Dog

what is the gist/context/meaning of the milkshake quote, that has been making the rounds? I know it’s from Juno, but I’ve been too swamped to look it up, let alone see the flick.

  25. Drew February 25th, 2008 at 11:39 am

    Same here Jennifer.

  26. Pete February 25th, 2008 at 12:26 pm

The milkshake line is from There Will Be Blood.

The only way to explain it is see the movie.

Daniel Day Lewis was a force of nature in that movie and its not anything like Gangs of New York. Performance of he century.

  27. Sean Serritella - YankeesDaily February 25th, 2008 at 12:30 pm

I didn’t know one movie that was nominated last night because I never go to the movies. I watched the last event of the evening when I saw who won best picture but I never heard of it. I’m out of the loop when it comes to the newest pop culture things.

  28. Skippy February 25th, 2008 at 12:59 pm

Julie Christie had the early Oscar buzz but by last week word was out that Cotillard had taken over. Why? She’d been out promoting the film and Christie wasn’t.

(I made my predictions here: http://snarkerati.com/movie-ne.....of-myself/ and did only so so)

  29. saucY February 25th, 2008 at 1:11 pm

oscar pools… yuck. i know we’re kind of in a sports lull here, but come on.

that said, i’m glad ‘falling slowly’ won.

  30. Bill Porter February 25th, 2008 at 5:18 pm

    Pete, you sound soooo bitter.

  31. Eric February 25th, 2008 at 6:00 pm

Ok I feel sorry that you lost but come on, she was very nice to look at accepting that award
