Giambi impresses Girardi

Peter Abraham
February
26

The Yankees avoided the rain in the area and got their workout in. It was a standard spring training day: they worked on two fields on relays and cutoffs, did some individual defensive drills and finished off with batting practice.

Watched Jason Giambi hit and he was going the other way or up the middle with everything. Joe Girardi said he has been impressed with how good Giambi has looked this spring. As he said, if Giambi proves he can play first base it gives the Yankees a lot more flexibility in terms of their roster and their lineup.

But with the Big G, it’s always about whether he can stay healthy and none of us can predict that with any degree of certainty. But he sure looked good on Feb. 26.

I just heard Fla has major power outages. You are lucky it missed you, it is a nasty storm.

  2. JoeT YANKEES

i’m in orlando and haven’t had a problem, my family down in palm beach said they haven’t had any problems either… oh well

Kazmir missed a scheduled intra-squad game today with “discomfort” in his elbow, he made it sound like it wasn’t anything serious though

    Go Giambino!

  3. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

the contract year always brings out the best

  4. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

Pull up the radar, it is a nasty storm.

  5. MichiganYankee

Giambi is in a contract year. If he wants much more than an NRI for next year, he needs to be healthy and consistent. Speaking of “big motivators,” ….

  6. Don Vito

    Brandon…agreed..

  7. Andrea

I said this on the last thread but I’m saying it again cause it’s so cool. I just found out that NYU’s graduation in May is being held at Yankee Stadium. I just graduated from NYU. I had no interest in going before, but I’m totally going now.

  8. Guiseppe Franco

I’ve been saying for three months on this blog that the Yanks should use Giambi’s contract year to their advantage. Same thing for Abreu.

Every idiot knows (including Giambi himself) that his option for 2009 will not be picked up by the Yanks and this will indeed be his final season in pinstripes – no matter what.

Money is always a big motivator for players and hopefully his overall health this season will benefit significantly from his conditioning.

  9. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    Very cool Andrea!

  10. Mark Alan

Jason has the motivation to remain healthy. Neo-Joe’s job has to include keeping him away from Pavano.

  11. al arodien

    Pete.
has tha blackout struck yankees camp?

  12. Mark Alan

    Andrea…

How cool is that? I envy you.

  13. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

next update will be Carl Pavano impresses Girardi w/ his work ethic

  14. jay destro

    two words: contract year

  15. Andrea

Mark Alan and Jennifer: I know! It’s freaking awesome. I was totally not going to go because I just got a master’s, so I was only there 2 years (well, 2 and a half. I’m a slacker) and I really didn’t like the school at all and made no attachments to it or anyone there. But graduating (or doing anything) at Yankee Stadium? Freaking awesome. I’m there. Now I just have to figure out how, cause I haven’t looked into it at all and have ignored all emails.

  16. Marc

Ugh!,I cant stand to listen to Mad Dog talk about the lack of Yankee pitching this year.

  17. Clare

    Peter,

Kat O’Brien’s blog is missing from your blogroll of beat writer blogs – is that just an oversight?

  18. SJ44

As if Russo knows what he is talking about? A waste of 5 good hours of airtime putting those two bozos on the air talking baseball.

  19. pat

I doubt the Yankees will pick up Giambi’s option for 22 million too but that doesn’t mean he goes away.

The contract also has a 5 million buyout in it. If he has a good year this year, don’t discount the chance the Yanks would buy out the option and try to sign him for less money.

  20. MikeEff - Shelley at First

mad dog is a total idiot. i only listen because they get good guests and i kinda like mike

  21. Marc

Atleast they talk baseball, 1050 ESPN just talk about steroids and basketball.

  22. Marc

Stephen A. Smith talks about racism all day!

  23. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

I wonder if Seven Smith knows what a baseball looks like.

  24. MikeEff - Shelley at First

they also assume that joba will be in the pen. i hate the way they pontificate as if they had inside info

  25. MikeEff - Shelley at First

    marc you’re right about 1050. unlistenable…

  26. Marc

They just said that the Mets have a better pitching staff than the Yanks based on Pedro. All of sudden Pedro healthy?!

  27. saucY

i said it before and i’ll say it again

    maddog=crackhead…

  28. MikeEff - Shelley at First

and el duque is literally falling to pieces…

  29. Andrea

    Honestly, how old is Pedro?

  30. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

Are you serious. Maybe Pedro 5 years ago. Not Pedro now.

  31. MikeEff - Shelley at First

    isn’t pedro 36?

    hey jennifer…how is sam?

  32. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

This morning when I left he was chirping and a lot more alert. I am just waiting for his poop test to come back. Hopefully since he is getting better he will be fine now. Thanks for asking.

  33. saucY

bartolo colown signed a minor league deal with red sox?

    lol

  34. ummfada

Amazing… I love the way Mike abuses the callers!

Gordon Damer on ESPN (unfortunately on from 2:00 am to 6:00 am) is THE MAN!!!!!!

  35. S.o.S.27

Stephen A. Smith talks about racism all day!

Doesnt know much about anything not related to basketball. He’s on for an hour and i cant get myself to listen for more than 5 minutes. Thats only because the other station is on commercial.

Can anyone tell me what round draft pick we would get if Giambi does good this year? Thats something that hasnt been brought up today. Not only does he help us win this year. But he helps us after he’s gone.

  36. Marc

Stephen A. Smith- Barry Bonds blah blah blah. Clemens Blah blah. Its unfair treatment.

Shut up and do some homework on active players to discuss on your show not the back page of the post!

  37. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

I want to know how it is unfair treatment? Roger was brought before congress. Was Barry? I don’t recall. Roger is roasted everywhere, Barry didn’t get it nearly as bad.

  38. S.o.S.27

bartolo colown signed a minor league deal with red sox?

I bet the happiest person to here the news is Arod. With the little league park Boston plays in. A 5 homer game wouldnt be out of the question. I hope they call up Bartolo to throw bp to Alex during a game. Maybe after, use him for the homerun derby in New York this year. How nice would that be.

  39. Andrea

I really can’t believe Pedro is 36. He seems so much older. And he’s got a full grown son.

  40. G. Love

I really hope Giambi finds the health and consistency to help this team this year.

I don’t think he’s getting his act together because it’s a contract year.

I think he knows his Yankee days are numbered and he wants to go out a winner and not the mistake he appears to have been.

If the Yanks win the series this year and Giambi contributes, his legacy is much improved as a Yankee.

    I hope it happens.

  41. Patrick

It’s painful to listen to Mike and MD, they know far less about baseball than most people that post on this blog. Same goes for most of the other sports they talk about. Within a span of five minutes they discussed: why did Wang get so little in arb compared to oliver perez, what happened to humberto sanchez, what happened to pavano. Those are three things they should easily know yet did not. And of course every single day they go on and on about how Joba is way more valuable as an 8th inning guy and how he will be the future Yankees closer.

I still listen though because at least they are talking about baseball (and my commute is >1hr). :(

  42. Marc

    Patrick,

They mentioned humberto sanchez? There is no way they know ho any minor leaguers are.

  43. Jax

Every since Stephen A. Smith said that Hughes “should have stayed in the game” after popping his hamstring, I have a really hard time listening to him.

  44. Andrea

Patrick–I had the same problem. When I was commuting I listened to them all the time, even when the Yankees were crapping out in the playoffs. It’s unfortunate.

  45. daverave

Giambi hitting to the opposite field… what a concept! It’s what made him such a good hitter in Oakland and what initially justified his exorbitant salary; i.e., he was a complete hitter instead of a shift-inducing power guy.

  46. Marc

    Jax,

Get out of here he said that?

    What was his reasoning?

  47. Clare

I can’t stand Verducci, but this is pretty amusing.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....ml?eref=T1

  48. Say it ain't so

I know that a lot of what Mike and Maddog say is just to get reactions out of people and get angry callers and all that, and I think any rational person can deal with a differing opinion. Except that they constantly give out false information, and then repeatedly emphasize that false information for several hours and sometimes even days.

  49. Jax

Yep, the next day after Hughes left the game in the middle of the no-hitter. He said baseball players “weren’t tough enough”. I believe he compared them to basketball players.

  50. Marc

    Jax,

Ofcourse every analogy is to basketball, because thats all he follows and is the only reason he has a prime time slot on 1050. When baseball season starts, he is lost and just talks about Arod.

  51. Patrick

Marc – Haha true.. Actually a caller called in and asked what happened to Humberto Sanchez, Carl Pavano and Kei Igawa. Of course M&MD had no clue about any of them.

  52. Jax

The only time Stephen.A Smith was listenable was when Brandon Tierney was the show with him. He’s been unlistenable since.

  53. mel

Speaking of talk shows, Dan Patrick was on top of his game today.

    1. Had Tom Verducci on who gave his take on “WTF was Roger Thinking?”. (I’ll post a link to the audio when it comes up)

    2. Mentioned Jeter willing to take a blood test. Said he could be the Joan of Arc and the rest will follow. Also said they can now test whether or not you’re a “TRUE YANKEE” LMAO on that one.

  55. TIME 4 #27

I really dont know why evrybody thinks that boston has this great pitching and the yankees have quatsion marks. Now that schilling is hurt you can say that boston has only one guy that you can really trust thats beckett and i think we can say that about wang (im not talking about the post season) now pettitte against matsuzaka i think we all take pettitte (i know you can say that matsuzaka will have a better year but its still a quatsion mark) mussina and wakefield are both old and i think its safe to say that mussina will have a good year just to show that he is not done. So we are left with our kids vs. there kids and we all can say that hughes and kennedy are a lot better then lester and buchholz. and our bullpen can be really scary with joba and mo. (i really beleive that joba will be in the bullpen a whole season)and okajima is really not that good. so lets be optinistic. We are bringing home #27

  56. raymagnetic â„¢

    “quatsion mark” ?!?!?

  57. Doreen

    Mel -

    Thanks! That’s priceless!

I especially like the crack that they can now test to see if someone’s a true Yankee. LOL!

  58. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

They don’t know any of the Yankee minor leaguers. I followed the big three from the time they were in the Yankees farm system. And at one point they were saying Yankee fans didn’t know who Joba and Ian were. I’m like hello! We do know, we do follow the minor leaguers. They also didn’t know who Action was. Call in ask them how Action is doing, they go ah duh.

  59. Y's Guy

sos, theres no way the saux are gonna pitch colon against arod. but that’s the 1st thing i thought of when i heard it too

  60. Jax

Jennifer they also especially Mike act as if the Yankees “caught lighting in the bottle” and had discovered a “gem” with Joba. They act as if the Yankees don’t know what they have in their own farm system.

  61. Marc

    jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge,

They have better things to look up, like the ratings at the Oscars and best picture from 1936.

  62. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

Yeah and what is all the Oscar talk on the sports stations. I could care less about the Oscars and yet they wast like 30 minutes talking about it.

  63. mel

Am I missing something? Don’t the Sox have enough to fill rotation? Let’s see. Beckett, Matsuzaka, Wakefield, Lester, Buck. Then they can call up guys when they need an extra pitcher or there’s an injury.

What’s that? They don’t have anyone ready to bring up? How can that be?! Theo’s the greatest GM in the history of sports! I don’t understand.

  64. mel

    Jax,

Isn’t it strange how Joba fell from the heavens and landed…in the Yankees’ lap?

  65. Say it ain't so

Did anyone else see this? Theo needs to grow up.

  66. ray

    Time 4 #27

With all due respect to state categorically that Hughes and Kennedy are a lot better than Bucholtz and Lester is a matter of personal opinion. I think both the Sox pitching staff and the Yankee pitching both have strengths and weaknesses, but to say things like Okajima is not really that good is crazy! Answer me honestly…you rather have Okajima or Igawa? And for the bullpen being scary….ya I agree…real scary for Yankee fans when guys like Farnsworth are pitching.

  67. S.o.S.27

Why does Steven A say Debbie is going under the sheets with her hgh everyday? So some people that take hgh avoid getting under the sheets? He tries to be original and it comes out idiotic. And the yelling. Like that will make people listening think he knows what hes talking about.

  68. mel

    hello, ray…

  69. Clare

    mel,

Yes, that is amazing. There were 40 chances to take him before we did. Hindsight is 20-20, but that is just unreal.

  70. MikeEff - Shelley at First

i like Moose’s attitude this year!

  71. saucY

Say it ain’t so – thanks for that Moose article!

  72. Mike S.

Regarding Colon: The Red Sox liked so much having one overweight, fading, aging righty with shoulder trouble that they had to go get another.

Regarding Giambi: dead on with the final year of contract stuff. An amazing but true stat: Giambi has only hit above .253 ONCE since 2002. Thank goodness for the walks.

Regarding Mike and the Dog: I and others were onto Joba and other minor leaguers way before they heard of them.

  73. ray

    Hi Mel,
I am asking for a Congressional hearing on your Lakers! Getting Gasol by giving up Brown constitutes grand theft by the Lakers!!!! lol

  74. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

what can we do to get Stephen A. Smith fired from ESPN radio

I mean he continues to ignore everything but Clemens and Bonds. When Bonds did it, it was news it was fresh 3 yrs. later no one wants to talk about this too much it bores the crap out of us !!!!

Clemens isn’t vilified or dissed as much as Bonds because seriously this topic has been beaten to death !!! Thank god for the NY GIANTS SUPERBOWL it freaking saved the U.S. from commiting mental suicide. I just want to talk about Spring Training ! NBA SEASON ! or how about NFL combines, it gets boring talking about the same crap day after day that’s why Stephen A. , that’s nobody speaks too illed about Clemens !

You got to be a fool thinking anybody gives a damn about this mofo ! I could careless about Roger Clemens that’s his fault I don’t have recticfy how I reacted towards Bonds who still is an idiot for what he said to his defense !!!

  75. Marc

    S.o.S.27,

With Stephen A. Smith everything is about racism and fair treatment. He brought up Sean Bell yesterday for no apparent reason

  76. S.o.S.27

    Bucholtz and Hughes are even
Kennedy is better than Lester. Reason being Lester cant get past 5 innings with his lack of control. Always seems to be in trouble. The sample size that we have seen in Kennedy. He has a better chance going deep into games.

    Igawa=Toad
Ohkajima is better but lets see what he does this year. In the end of last year he was getting hammered. Tired Arm or batters figuring him out?

  77. Say it ain't so

I’m glad Moose didn’t let it get to him at all. And let’s see if Theo’s still talking when his team gets off to a slow start once they’re back from their trip. They haven’t even gone yet, I’m sure there will be plenty of guys complaining.

  78. mel

Clare, what you say is true. It also helps that the big guy in the sky (whatever you choose to call him or her) is a Yankee fan. lol.

  79. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

I apologize to the board but Stephen A. Smith literally pissed me off today

  80. ray

OK guys…I know Colon is overweight and has clown hair. But it is a no risk and possible high reward move by the Sox. Jim Roam on his show said he really liked the move. The Sox give up nothing for him, and are probably paying him little so what is there to lose? If he doesn’t work out the Sox simply let him go and they have lost nothing.

  81. mel

    ray,

Yes, but the amazing thing is that Boston was looking at Gasol vs. Garnett in the summer. There was a very real possiblity that Pau wouldn’t be there to steal. Bill Simmons wrote about in Page 2. I know he’s scared, because he’s not making any predictions. j/k.

  82. mel

    ray,

We’re with you. We absolutely LOVE the move.

  83. S.o.S.27

    Marc,
You can record the hour that Steven A is on. Listen to Steven 3 weeks later and it will sound exactly the same as what you recorded. The question to ask yourself is did he use the same camera guy that Isaih did to keep his job this long? There has to be some nude photos in all this.

    Brandon,
Tell us how you really feel. Get it all off your chest.

  84. Marc

How did he piss you off?

  85. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

If you are not used to traveling to foreign countries or eating foreign food it can be pretty miserable. Why is Theo bringing up something that Mike said 4 or 5 years ago. Yeah Mike whined about it, but I’m sure it wasn’t a pleasant expierence for him. I would have been in the hotel room eating pb and j with him, since I am also a very picky eater.

  86. Patrick

Oh well if Jim “Roam” said so it must be true.

    PHE-NOM-IN-AL!!!

  87. Doreen

    Say It Ain’t So –

Absolutely – let’s see what happy campers the Red Sox are AFTER their trip.

But somehow you know that whatever barkin’ goes on, it won’t make the paper. I can’t believe Theo Epstein would make such an unprofessional statement, though. Kudos to Mussina for refusing to bite.

  88. S.o.S.27

I wonder if part of Colons contract has a repair clause on all the dents and chips of baseballs slamming against THE GREEN MONSTER that he serves up?

  89. Patrick

Haha much love for the Moose. I love his quote, “Yeah, we used it as an excuse for winning the division.”

  90. SJ44

    A few musings:

    1. Theo needs to shut up and just worry about his own team. Any team that has Curt Schilling and Manny Ramirez on it shouldn’t be worried about player attitudes or “high maintainence” athletes. Mike Mussina didn’t like Japan. Big deal. Like Moose said, they still won the division.

Sorry Theo, let’s not act like you invented the game. Just worry about your team and everything will be fine.

    2. Quick Francesa story. Last June, in NY on business, I have a radio accident…..I listened to his show for a few minutes. Russo was off. A caller calls Mike and is raving about this kid in the farm system named Joba Chamberlain. Suggested that perhaps the Yankees ought to think about calling him up to help their bullpen. Francesa goes off on the kid. Called his idea “stupid”, said he (Francesa) doesn’t know “what a Joba is”, and basically told the kid he shouldn’t watch baseball again.

A month later, who is touting Joba Chamberlain? No other than Mike Francesa. He had the “idea” of using Chamberlain in the bullpen.

He’s a complete fraud. Always has been, always will be. At least Russo is playing a role (which is all he is doing) with his act. What you hear is what you get with Mike Francesa. A total “know it all” who doesn’t know too much.

Phil Mushnick of the Post has outed him so much with his BS its not funny.

    3. Stephen A. Smith said the day after Hughes near no hitter that Hughes showed “no guts” coming out of that game.

Steven A. showed that day he has no brains.

Sports Talk Radio. Where logic goes to die on a daily basis.

    ray,

“We’re with you. We absolutely LOVE the move.’

Okay Mel…….I will fight fire with fire…lol….Sox fans love it when Giambi is playing first….can we all spell the word ERRORS.

  92. SJ44

Does Jim Rome know Colon was throwing 82 MPH in a workout in front of teams a month ago?

It is a no risk move. Whether it works or not is another question.

Let’s not make it out to be some brillant move. Its a team taking a shot on a guy. That’s it.

  93. TIME 4 #27

There is a reason why hughes was ranked the #1 prospect in baseball and not bucholtz. a if farnsworth pitches in the 6th its not so scary with our lineup. Okajima got killed by the yankees and i think that the rest of the league knows him now. Go yankees

  94. NJ in Tampa

Here’s hoping Giambi has a big contract year with 25-30 HR’s and 100 RBI….and then the Yankees not sign him for next year :)

Don’t get me wrong he seems like a nice enough guy but I’d rather go elsewhere next year at 1B

  95. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

Yeah lets see how happy they are after a 12 hour flight? When day is night, night is day. Lets see if they are all happy campers then.

Theo continues to prove why he is such a jerk. No one disses my Moose and gets away with it.

  96. S.o.S.27

O.K. Weve been blasting all these sports talk radio hosts. Its time to give some that we like. My list is Dan Patrick,Colon Cowheard and Hartman. Patrick asks the tough questions to athletes and Commisioners. Cowheard makes me bust up. Hartman is the most knowledgable person on radio. He can tell you who played what possition on the 40 Bears.

  97. Patrick

Great story SJ44. Just the other day Mike and MD were saying how 99.9% of Yankees fans didn’t know who Joba or Ian were prior to August 2007. Speak for yourselves..

I don’t understand people that say Joba should stay in the pen all year. First it is obvious that an ace starter is more valuable than an ace setup man. If this is true then it is logical to say that we want Joba to be a starter given that he has the ability to do both. To become an ace starter a young pitcher must slowly increase his workload. How will Joba do so without pitching as a starter for a good portion of this year? Mike and MD (and people on this blog) claim that Joba should be a fulltime reliver this year but in 5 years he will be the ace of the staff. This simply is not a likely scenario. If Joba pitches 145-155 innings this year, he can throw 175-185 next year and finally in 2010 he will be on no innings limits. If he stays in the bullpen this year it is extremely unlikely he will become a starter.

  98. ray

    SJ44

I agree that the Sox signing Colon does not constitute a brilliant move. Like I said earlier as a Sox fan I like the move because there is no risk and only has an upside.

And Time 4 #27….I’m not taking a thing away from Hughes…I think he is a great young pitcher. As for Okajima it is true that at the end of the regular season he had some ineffective outings and I think it was a tired arm because the Sox rested him some and he was very effective in the playoffs.

  99. Patrick

Time 4 #27 my last post is aimed at you and others like you with no thought for the future.

  100. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    Patrick

They are still carrying on about that? I checked the box scores, or watched their games on the net, or listened to them when I could. They are idiots if they think that 99.9% of Yankee fans didn’t know who either of them are.

  101. Jax

If you where to call up Mike and Chris and talk about Melancon replacing Joba in the eight inning in July they’ll likely hang-up on you.
Francesa: Who the heck is Mark Melancon? He’s not as good as Joba. So you want the Yankees to call-up a rookie in the middle of the season and put him in the eighth inning?

  102. SJ44

Frankly SOS, I think they are all rather weak.

Patrick is the best of a weak bunch.

Cowherd is just a blowhard. A PAC-10/USC suckup, who will get on his media moralist soapbox for everything except Reggie Bush’s problems. On that, he justifies the 300K Bush made as an “amateur” at USC.

If you are going to get on the moral soapbox, then play favorites on the air, you are a fraud in my book.

    Michael Kay? Eh, nothing special.

The problem I see with these guys is they are so rife with conflicts (the ESPN guys NEVER can talk about their own network, Kay can only say so much about the Yankees), you never get the real deal from any of them.

Most major markets now have two sports talk stations. When you add in ESPN Radio, Fox Sports Radio and Sporting News Radio, you have a LOT of guys on the air.

However, like pitching, there is a dearth of talent on the airwaves.

There just isn’t enough on air talent to fill all the slots on sports talk radio these days. Its just a lot of yelling and not a lot of substance.

  103. Marc

    S.o.S.27 ,

    I like Max Kellerman.

  104. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

Max Kellerman is an idiot too. He was carrying on last week about how no one can say bad about Andy because he is religious.

I would venture a guess to say there are more people on this blog able to talk intelligently about the Yankees and their prospects than Mike and the Mad Dog will ever know.

In fact, and Pete chime in if you want, I think the beat writers have become much more aware of the farm system because of fans talking about it on blogs in the last 18 months.

It is THE story when talking about the Yankees. Ask other executives in the game. They can’t believe how much talent the Yankees have amassed in the farm system. Its being talked about by a lot of people in the game.

I think the beat writers have seen that fans want more information about the younger players and they are going to give the readers more in that area.

That’s smart because its more eyeballs to your stories and its the way to build a readership.

Talk show guys are mired in the past. They spend more time talking about Carl Pavano and whining about the past. The fans want to talk about Joba, Mark Melancon, Dan McCutcheon and the future.

Its the disconnect talk show guys have with their audience.

SoS – This might sound strange but Evan Roberts on WFAN isn’t half bad. He’s a big mets fan and he’s on with a complete nut (Joe Domingo) but he actually makes logical arguments. I never listen to him because I’m busy during the midday but when I have listened he is clearly more intelligent than most of sports talk radio.

I also want joba to be a starter but if he starts in the bullpen he should stay there. i dont like the idea that we should mess around with him.

  108. Patrick

SJ44, to back up your point, just a few days ago in the Star Ledger (NJ newspaper) the front page of the sports section had a big picture of Mark Melancon with an accompanying article. I think your theory about beat writers being more knowledgeable of the farm system is true.

LMAO @ Theo’s pansy azz sweating my man Moose. I think he was just looking for something random and totally irrelevant to whine about rather than having to answer questions about A-Rod’s career numbers vs Colon!

  110. Patrick

Time 4 27 – Joba played his entire career as a starting pitcher. The only time he was a reliever was during his callup last summer. It is a common practice for teams to bring up promising young pitchers and have them begin their big league career in the bullpen then transfer them back to starter.

  111. TIME 4 #27

I dont want that we should start him as a reliever and in the 2nd half make him a starter. what joba does he should do a whole season.

You might have hit the nail on the head.Maybe Colon can eliminate the middle man this year when he faces Alex and throw it over the wall for him. Plus it will keep his pitch count down.

  113. Patrick

    Time 4 27 – Why?

    TIME 4 #27
If we keep him in the pen. Then he is basically behind another year of gradually increasing his innings limit. You cant hold back a guy in the pen that has the potential to be an Ace. He starts in the pen this year so that he can have innings to spare come the middle to end of the year. Therefore he can be an asset as a starter come playoff time.

  115. Patrick

SoS – Agreed. In my opinion they should keep him in the pen until late June, put him in AAA for a few starts to stretch him out, bring him back up in july and have Joba replace Moose in the rotation.

  116. BBB

SoS, it wouldn’t surprise me if that was indeed his ulterior motive. They do stuff like that all the time, whine about the Yankees to deflect attention of questions or issues that might make them look bad. Just like Pukeilis this past August crying a river about how Joba “threw at his head” in hopes that the reporters would forget to ask about the saux getting swept! Jebus, what a bunch of passive aggressive little girls, they make Pavano look tough! (OK, that last part may be exxagerating a bit, lol.)

  117. BBB

Also, IIRC, wasn’t part of the reason Moose didn’t want to go to Japan because he had had a recent death in his family (I think either his father or FIL had passed away?) that had put him a bit behind in his usual spring preparation, and he thought the transcontinental Opening Day would be detrimental to his staying on track, etc.? Very cute of Theo to make flippant comments about an issue involving a death in a player’s family. And he’s a fine one to talk, I bet if Cher or Liza Minelli passed away, it would throw him off his routine for a whole year! heh.

    Very nice, BBB. LOL

Wow, Giambi went the other way with the ball? That would be great if he could hit the ball the other way but he should do it when the shift is on this way it’s an automatic base hit.

It’s amazing what a contract year will do to a player,Now if Pavanno would do the same so the Yankees could trade him for what they could get.
