The Big G gets his work in
Joe Girardi, it would seem, is the greatest motivator since George S. Patton. What else could explain Jason Giambi?
The clubhouse opened at 9:10 a.m. this morning. A few minutes after the writers were allowed in, in came Giambi – in full uniform and carrying his glove. The Big G showed up early and was on the field doing some work at first base.
Further, Giambi had cut his hair short.
“I’m such a loser,” he said. “I was in bed early last night, too.”

Atta boy.
a multi-millionare, who plays a kid’s game, and shows up for ‘work’ early. Give him a cookie.
Not to dismiss the motivational prowess of Joe Girardi completely, that there is a $22m ’09 club option for Giambi is probably nibbling at the back of his mind as well.
I honestly enjoy that Giambi is now trying hard to impress us again, getting in shape, working hard at 1B … if he gets the starting 1B job out of spring training… i wouldnt be suprised and i’d be pullin for him. He can seriously be a large asset for us here in 08
Mike – good point. This is a “walk-year” for Giambi. That certainly has a way of adding extra motiviation!
More power to him, I like him and I hope he does well, but I don’t think there’s any way he gets picked up for 2009. The $5 million buyout is a drop in the bucket.
It would be huge for Giambi to have a monster year. Even thinking about picking up his option will be a nice problem to have.
Fear is the greatest motivator.
Does anyone think we should add Bonds to the equation? I realize that DH/1B/LF is a cluster fart as It is, but there are definatly pros and cons to adding him.
Lets start some healthy discussion…
I have no doubt in my mind that Girardi has nothing to do with Giambi working hard. As Mike pointed out, Giambi has $22 million reasons to work hard this spring. He is trying to either get his contract option picked up (which is extremely unlikely), or he is trying to catch the eye of a team that can use Giambi on a 2 yr deal to end his career.
i hope giambi stays healthy, has a monster year, plays 100 games at 1b with some adequate defense then becomes somebody else’s problem.
It’s amazing what lengths a player will go to in their contract year.
Just kidding. Seems like everyone is buying what Girardi’s selling. That’s half the battle and it bodes very well for the year.
I can’t believe there’s going to be a “game” tomorrow already. Seems like yesterday that the Red Sox were celebrating and Alex was no longer in pinstripes. Good times ahead.
“The Big G showed up early & was in bed early last night…”
That’s so unGiambino like…
Giambi has an option? Ugh.
Say no to Bonds. Paint thinner has a better personality than him.
Mike,
No Chance the Yankees pick up big g’s option. I don’t care what kind of season he has.
One downside is that my 69 year old father that has been a Yankees fan all is life, will forever disown the team if we stoop so low as to put that jerk on the team. You can’t be serious to say that Bonds belongs on this team.
nothing like being in a contract year to provide a little motivation.
Giambi will have a nice season, he knows the Yanks wont pick up 22 million in the offseason. He is looking at 5 mil buyout from the Yanks, and to catch on with another team for 2-3 more years at about 10 mil per.
Giambi said he was in bed at 9, he didn’t say he was alone. Ha ha.
do the HRs Giambi might hit count less this year because he worked harder because of his contract situation?
if that is the reason he is busting his butt, who cares?
nothing that has happened in the past matters at this point, the only thing that matters is 2008.
if he is only working harder to get another big contract, the Yankees will still reap those benefits.
So I just got my “loser” email from the Yankees telling me I didn’t get the chance to buy premium tickets during the presale. Gee – I could’ve figured that out. Did we ever find anyone who DID get their email yesterday and WAS able to buy tix?
Don vito:
I could care less about your 69 year old father disowning the Yankees if Bonds is in pinstripes. Read my post again, where does it say Bonds BELONGS on this team?
I said that there are pros and cons for both sides of the arguement. Do I want him on the team, absolutely not. But his bat would fit perfectly in the line-up and he would dominate that short porch.
Don Vito, you really must think before you type. You had issues in the last thread as well. I think you just need to unravel your panties, they may be causing a blood clot.
On balance, was the Giambi signing a success or a failure?
I vote for failure.
He missed nearly two full seasons (’04, ’07), and he tanked in the 2003 world series.
raymagnetic,
That’s right. In order to avoid injury by falling out of bed, he had one nursing aide on each side of him. lol.
Dr.
…
and this is “healthy discussion “…Go examine yourself, dink !
I’ve got to agree with Don Vito. Short porch or not, I really don’t think there’s room for Bonds on the Yankees. There’s already 2 LF, a bunch of 1B and too many aging DHs.
BTW, where is Wilson Betemit?. He is completely MIA. No news, nothing.
Dr. Cox, Don Vito – we’re going to have to give both of you a time out soon if you can’t play nicely in the blog-box. Dr. Cox, I agree that Don Vito was a little uptight in prior threads, but you did invite discussion of the Bonds issue. No need to get offended when someone offers their opinion.
Lori, I didn’t even get my loser email.
And 9pm for big g he is a loser.
j/k
I would take Bonds..if he pitched middle relief
“On balance, was the Giambi signing a success or a failure?
I vote for failure. He missed nearly two full seasons (’04, ‘07), and he tanked in the 2003 world series.”
Currently the vote is 4 great years and 2 mediocre years. I think so far it’s been a good signing. If he has another typical Giambi year it’ll be 5 good years and 2 mediocre years.
Also, the Yankees do not even make it to the WS in 2003 if Giambi doesn’t hit those 2hrs off of Pedro in Game 7.
Don:
Pete was right, you are obviously just too sensitive for this board. I will respect your sensitivity and not say anything to you anymore. But I just have one more question…
Why would anybody honestly give a crap if your 69 year old father “disowned” the Yankees if Bonds is on the team?
Are you against cheaters? or are you both just racist? If you could forgive Roger and Andy so quickly, it just makes me wonder…?
just got my “loser” email… glad to see the system’s working at least (somewhat)…
“raymagnetic,
That’s right. In order to avoid injury by falling out of bed, he had one nursing aide on each side of him. lol.”
2 nursing aides sound like the typical Giambino to me. lol
Karma:
I think the Giambi signing taught the Yankee front office a valuable lesson, so in the end it may wind up being sort of a back-door success. I think due in part to his partial and total meltdowns, the Yankees have begun to shy away the quick-trigger approach of signing big money free agents to long term contracts. At least I hope they have. I would consider A-Rod an exception to this rule.
Lori-
youre right. But read my post please any then youll see that I did invite the conversation and did not get offended.
For Instance:
“Does anyone think we should add Bonds to the equation? I realize that DH/1B/LF is a cluster fart as It is, but there are definatly pros and cons to adding him.
Lets start some healthy discussion…” -that was my original post, verbatim.
Don Vito’s Response:
“One downside is that my 69 year old father that has been a Yankees fan all is life, will forever disown the team if we stoop so low as to put that jerk on the team. You can’t be serious to say that Bonds belongs on this team.”
see what I mean?
No, nobody wants Barry Bonds on the Yankees.
But it was nice of you to bring it up
Seriously, on Bonds, it’s a interesting thought.
With Bonds batting behind ARod, Alex could hit 70 HRs. On the downside, will already have Zilla, Damon, and Giambi rotating at DH – talk about a traffic jam.
Plus, with a single exception, Bonds tanks in the postseason. Geez, we already have ARod and now Jeter to fill that roll.
Tell big g to stop putting gel in his hair before games, it is gross!
You know, Giambino could be going through some male menopausal thing. Or he could’ve just gotten tired of sowing his oats. Oh, who am I kidding. Forever and ever when I think of Jason Giambi I will think of Jack Daniels and pomade. That would make his tenure here a “failure”.
Dr. Cox: I Think Don Vito was making an example of his father. Life-long Yankee fans, like his father, wouldn’t approve of such a signing.
Just trying to be diplomatic.
Sorry, Dr. Cox. I really don’t see what you mean. So he used different words, no need to throw insults. Just remember, the written word is sometimes different than the spoken word and it is hard to tell if someone is joking or being sarcastic, or just being mean. I took Don’s post as “I don’t think he should be on the team,” not any personal jab at you.
Whatever the case may be, there is validity to both arguments.
personally I do not want him anywhere near the Yanks, but on paper it doesnt sound like that bad of an idea.
Dr…..I was JOKING, ya Maroon !…yes, and I am the one that is being sensitive….right….Listen Mister COX, nobody really gives a crap about YOU trying to lead this thread down the “healthy”
It’s obvious that bonds would kill the short porch in right, but is it worth disrupting this sense of chemistry the yankees have found for the first time in a while? The infusion of young players has really made the yankees seem more like a team than a collection of superstars. I don’t want bonds, his three lockers, and gloomy attitude anywhere near cano, melky, hughes, ect…
Of course, if we are 6 games behind the red sox in july, and Mr. Balco is still available, then cash needs to take a good long look. I’d hate to see him in pinstripes after hating him for this long, but Bonds would undeniably make an impact
Lori:
When responding to someone elses argument to trying to make a point, it is in bad taste to ADD words to that arguement. If you read my original post and then see when he wrote “You can’t be serious to say that Bonds belongs on this team” that takes away from the argument credibility itself.
I could care less that he disagreed with me, infact I wanted people to disagree with me, thats why I brought it up.
stop w/ this Bonds to the Yankees crap, I don’t hate him, but I definitely do not and we don’t need him here. This team is moving forward, we’re getting younger and more athletic, we don’t need to back track to a player who is also a clubhouse killer
Technically we really are only getting younger in our pitching. Only two of our position players are under 32.
IMO there’s no need for Bonds. We got an Italian version.
I’ll lift a poll question I saw somewhere else:
Who will play first, Clemens or Bonds?
everyone on this team since 2001 has failed. no world championships. It would be hard to pin it on the Giambino
Flam Brett Gardner, Shelley Duncan, Austin Jackson (soon), Tabata (soon)
AKA – I’m a big spender and I need one more contract to make sure I am filthy rich for the rest of my life.
If Giambi and Matsui could be moved for prospects, or at least salary-dumped, AND we knew that Bonds would actually get to play all season — instead of possibly having to go to trial and/or jail — then there would be a legitimate discussion to be had. Would his bat look great? Absolutely. Would he disrupt the clubhouse? Almost certainly. Given that we already have two lefty DHes on the roster, I think that there’s really no point in considering Bonds.
In Bed by 9, asleep by 11, Gigity Gigity Gigity
Brandon, I agree with you. Im just anticipating that “soon” part haha.
I also forgot Francisco Cervelli he’s under 32
“Flam Brett Gardner, Shelley Duncan, Austin Jackson (soon), Tabata (soon)”
Not a single one of those players is a lock on the 25-man roster. Two have barely sniffed AA. The other two are backup/platoon guys at this point, and that’s probably their ceiling.
My sister won the lottery, she is picking up the Saturday Package. My dad and I got the loser letter.
I want to see the day when we have an 18 year-old in the lineup.
Awesome. You go Big G.
We will need his bat and OBPS this year.
I don’t feel that bad that my six year-old son has his jersey, signed pictures and baseball on his wall.
Cut hair? He lose is contract with the Gell company?
w/ Girardi that day may not be so far away
w/ Girardi that day may not be so far away
whozat:
I dont necessarily agree with the fact that he would certainly disrupt the clubhouse. For Instance, I kind of see it as a unique situation where the embattled superstar has one more shot at victory and does everything he can , including shut his stupid mouth, to win at all costs.
a la Randy Moss circa New England Patriots 2007.
Dr. Cox do you know how much running we are doing in camp ? and the difference in personel ? you think w/ Yankee Stadium closing this year that NY would welcome Barry Bonds ? are you nuts…literally we are talking about extensive crap on the Yanks talk, and plus where does he play ? the DH spot is there to rotate Posada, Damon or Matsui later on in the season. I don’t see it and I pray your not serious about this.
Maybe the Yanks need to pick up Bonds just to keep him away from… Tampa?!?!? We had enough trouble with the (D)Rays last season, maybe it’ll clog up the basepaths if they really pick him up. I wouldn’t mind seeing the Joba-Barry confrontation, though.
Seriously, there is no room for Bonds with the LF/DH/1B logjam already, but it’s hard not to be intrigued by the possibilities.
Regarding whether the Giambi signing was a success or failure, let’s ask Bob Dylan:
“there’s no success like failure, and failure’s no success at all.”
Brandon if you would read my other posts you would know the answer to that that I dont want him on the team.
However, I am not just going to jump on the anti-Bonds bandwagon. I still think he has a ton of productive at bats left and would be DOMINANT in the stadium.
Again let me clarify. Do I want this to Happen? Absolutely not. But I am open to the idea. (Which is a moot point anyway because it wont.)
nothing against girardi, but giambi may have about 20 million other reasons to rebound
Didn’t Joe mention that Gardner’s slightly ahead of Jackson?
BTW, wanted to mention that it’s nice to see that Girardi’s making extraordinary efforts to bring everyone back into the fold. From his public support of Farnsworth to his efforts to help Igawa adjust to playing long toss with Pavano, it says a lot about Girardi. I’m sure the other players have taken notice and will respond accordingly.
the team that could benefit from Bonds is the Atlanta Braves, they need fans, they need another decent bat too.
Brandon,
The reason why the market’s so thin for Bonds is that he can’t play the field anymore.
Brandon, FYI, the distinguished doctor is indeed operating without the capacity to maintain any degree of sanity.
Got my loser email this morning for the premium tickets. Oh well, I will settle for a ST game and a RS game with the Blue Jays or Royals I guess. It’s all good it’s still Yankee Baseball.
oh yeah, and i vote no on the bonds issue.
i just got my LOSER e mail as well.
did anybody here get a winner?
I wonder if Giuseppe Franco cut Giambino’s hair…
When you figure in the 5M buyout its actually a 17M decision.Jason is a GREAT offensive player when healthy and is conidered a team leader.Im not betting on the option but I wouldnt bet against him being here next year either.
MikeEff,
The winners posted in the threads from yesterday.
i haven’t gotten my loser email yet.
“I dont necessarily agree with the fact that he would certainly disrupt the clubhouse. For Instance, I kind of see it as a unique situation where the embattled superstar has one more shot at victory and does everything he can , including shut his stupid mouth, to win at all costs.”
Maybe. It’s still a moot point, because they already have several high-paid lefty sluggers that are jockeying for ABs. Adding another would be dumb, and make the roster even less flexible than it already is.
Don Vito,
Im insane because I am open to the idea of a possible discussion on bring on the the greatest left-handed hitters of all-time to a stadium that has a short portch in right field? I understand this will never, ever happen but it is quite a fascinating thought. I would do anything to have the Yankees win. Again i need to clarify because you just dont seem to get it. Do I want him on the team. NO. But It is definatly a secy thought to entertain.
Again, Maybe you can explain to me. Why were you so quick on forgving Clemens and Pettite but have an irrational blind hatred for Bonds. If you say you forgive them because they were Yankees, that is a legit reason, I just simply want to know.
Jennifer: check your bulk mail folder. maybe you are a winner and don’t know it!
I mentioned it yesterday, but Q&As with Alan Horne, Austin Jackson, Colin Curtis, Brett Gardner are up at http://www3.allaroundphilly.co...../blog.html
Mark Melancon and Dan McCutchen coming soon
“w/ Girardi that day may not be so far away”
Dude…it’s not an issue of having young players that the manager just needs to give a chance…it’s an issue of these guys either being FAR from ready or not having shown that they belong in the majors full-time yet, if at all.
Like I said…Shelley could be a good platoon RH, bottom-of-the-order bat. He’s unlikely to be anything else. Gardner needs to show that he can get on base in AAA before I’m going to give him a starting shot in the majors…and if he’s not going to be a starter, then he doesn’t really help the all-our-position-players-are-aging issue.
Ouch. What if the Yankees bought out Giambi after the season and gave Bonds a $1M contract? That’d be a $16M savings.
Not advocating it, just pointing out how much of an albatross that contract is.
“Im not betting on the option but I wouldnt bet against him being here next year either.”
If they didn’t have so many other guys who need DH slots, I’d maybe agree. But they do. So I think that Giambi will not be here.
Andrea,
Wouldn’t it be nice if they showed up at your door like the Publishers Clearinghouse?
nope no email.
I’d gladly be a loser if I was making Giambi’s salary.
has anyone found any pictures of the big g with short hair?
Hey Doc….lighten up !….. I don’t blindly hate anyone, pal. I don’t like Bonds. Never have, never will. ….oh, and what somehow did not make it in one of my previous posts…I take offense at you insinuating that my father and I are racists. Low blow, mister. As a Yankees fan for my entire life, as is my father, and was my grandfather, I will certainly be more forgiving to Yankee players than any others. But really, who are we to judge anyone ? What Andy did, what Roger did or didn’t do ? This is a game and is supposed to be fun to watch and a source of entertainment. I don’t care if Bonds is black, white, brown , purple, green or striped like a zebra. I don’t like him. IMHO, he is a total liar that juiced himself for many years and his home run records are a joke. He says that his head has not gotten any bigger since he has been in the game ? Does he thinks that baseball fans are all 2 years old ? It will be a welcome day, when A-Rod pummels his all-time HR record and does it “fair and square”. And let’s you and I put our swords down and agree to disagree, OK ?….I love the Yankees, you love the Yankees…Let’s just cheer on our team for a kick-@$$ 2008…OK ???….( either That …or Lori is putting us in timeout, and believe me, as I do have 5 kids,,,,timeouts stink ! )
mel: haha, yeah it would. If Hank and Cash show up at your door with some premium tickets in a suitcase for you to choose from. That would be great!
Imagine Bonds and A-Rod..there isn’t enough room in Yankee Stadium to fit those two ego’s!
It can’t be comforting to players like Giambi to see his fate in a player like Mike Piazza having no takers.
Giambi has to prove his ability to play a decent defense this year or he’ll be in for the permanent off season.
A hair cut and an early wake-up call sounds like a small price to pay to avoid that.
Andrea,
Better yet: Hank and some premium tickets and a suitcase full of cash.
Bigger comeback year in 08: Giambi or Mussina?
I can’t believe there’s people out there who would like to see the Yanks sign Barry Bonds.
I’d thought the crack epidemic had passed. . .
Mussina
mel: so this has actually turned into a Yankees Clearinghouse sweepstakes?
jeez what’s next Micheal Vick to the Jets…
Brandon,
you are comparing Barry Bonds to the Yankees to Vick to the Jets?
these crazy unrealistic scenerios, got me going to insults sorry about that
MEL:
thanks for the info!
call me a crazy optimist, but i see a big year for both Giambi and Moose
If Bonds can still hit and has adequate pop, and promises to stay steroid free, he could be an asset PROVIDED he be put at and understand that he is at the bottom of the pecking order in the locker room. Since that’s not going to happen, and we have Matsui to DH, let Bonds go to the devil… er, the Devil Rays. The latest rumor has Tampa Bay taking a look at the grumpy, old man.
Just what i was affraid of. Having a whole thread discussion about the most hated player ever. I made a comment yesterday that it would be a perfect year if Bonds and Schill were finally out of the picture.
Dr.Cox. I see where your going with this but we have had players from Mondesi to Sheff to Johnson that were just clubhouse killers. I like the non pre madonna type atmosphere that we have now. I hope that we dont make that same mistake again. We were champs without every big name out there. We are on the right track and inching closer to 27. Staying pat is the best move we can make.
I just want people to read why the Giants organization & the players are happy he’s gone. Go google it
Barry Bonds? Michael Vick? Mitt Romney asking who let the dogs out? What?
Here’s a solution everyone can agree on: sign Bonds and open up the roster spot by sending Joba down to AAA for one more season to get his act together.
Dr. Cox had a good point when he brought up comparing Randy Moss and Bonds. No one ever thought that Moss would be the teammate that he proved to be this season.
hahha, S.o.S.27, are you worried that if the Yanks sign Bonds there will be a post madonna type atmosphere?
and ? still doesn’t mean we should do it, while we’re atit lets bring back Roger to pitch relief
So much sensitivity in the threads today…
Mark Alan,
It’s funny. It was whispered here first. Then I saw it on ESPN news. Then I heard denials. Then Maddon said their was “minor” talk about it. So, what does all that mean? Bonds will be with the Rays soon. lol.
SOS,
I never said It should happen. I even said that I didnt want it to happen. However, I do believe that if it ever came up that I would be open to it. That being said I am off to get my gums stitched up. I will be back.
Nothing strange about this Pete. Its a contract year and he sure would love for the Yanks to pick up his option which is $22 and he won’t get that ANYWHERE in the market. I like Giambi and I’m glad that he’s working hard but its no surprise that players, prepare, play, focus better when big pay time is up. Shoot, I would. Any of us would.
The reason I feel Bonds does not get a pass from fans in general (outside of SF), is simply because he comes off as a self absorbed jerk. How much of that is true vs. media driven is up for debate. The bottom line is the man can play with or without steriods. Did they help him? Sure. Was he on a hall of fame pace in the 80′s and early nineties without roids? I think so. He is not the same player of 10 or even 5 years ago. But again, I think not being “likeable” in such a media driven era in sports leaves bad tastes for people, so when he does something wrong (like use steriods) it fuels that fire even more. That said, he to me is still one of the best “all around” left fielders to play the game. Go yanks! (I am not in favor of signing Bonds by the way)
From Rob Neyer’s chat:
Tom (San Antonio): How about a prediction Rob: Teams in the World Series? I say Cubs vs. Tigers
Rob Neyer: I’m going Yankees vs. Dodgers, old school.
Wouldn’t that be fun? I say Yankees in 5.
im thinking yanks vs. arizona in the WS
Too much stuff around Bonds to sign him. Its different from Randy Moss because Moss wasn’t facing a federal indictment for perjury while he was playing for the Pats this year.
If you think the media has been swarming around Pettitte, imagine Bonds in NY? It would be a nightmare.
It just wouldn’t work, nor should the Yankees try to make it work. Its enough of a chore to get this team ready. To add Bonds to the mix? Not worth it.
As far as who or what motivates Giambi, its not like the guy is broke. He has made over 100 million dollars in his career. I think its more than money that’s got him in this frame of mind. Same for Mussina, for that matter. These guys have an awful lot of pride. They aren’t just lazy guys looking to cash checks.
Perhaps Giambi is hungry to get back (or at least try) to being the player he was at one time.
Either way, I don’t worry about the reason. I’m just looking for results. If he gets them, everybody will be happy this season.
We know that Alex can’t catch pop-ups (not sure how that would translate to fly balls) but it sounds like he still has the gun to play corner outfield.
http://bombersbeat.mlblogs.com/
Maybe Giambi is working out hard because Girardi has made it seem like he is going to play part time. He mentioned Damon playing left and getting 600 at bats. Matsui getting his. They have 100 first basemans trying out. I say thats his motivation. Its either work your way into the lineup or be the next Ruben Sierra.
Mel…
The Rays need something to get their “fans” attention this year. You figure, they could sign either Bonds or a midget. I’d go the midget route, because it worked for Bill Veeck in ’51 and there’s a decent chance that the smaller guy would have a likable personality.
Scott Kazmir to get an MRI on his sore left elbow. He has had elbow soreness since he reported to camp.
This from the, “grass isn’t always greener on the other side” camp.
noooooooooooooooooo I wanted him in FA
anyway from Bryan Hoch’s Bombers beat I liked this comment
Last thought — Girardi’s offensive stars of camp so far, the young edition: Brett Gardner, Francisco Cervelli, Austin Jackson.
Brandon,mel and all basketball fans,
Yao Ming is out for the season. There goes Houstons chances.
Tabata and Duncan better work harder.
SOS,
Are you breathing a huge sigh of relief right now? Yao to have season-ending surgery.
“We know that Alex can’t catch pop-ups (not sure how that would translate to fly balls) but it sounds like he still has the gun to play corner outfield.”
Not surprising that a guy who’s always shown a good arm at SS and 3B would also have a good arm for RF.
Eli Manning is on M&MD right now
Mark Alan,
You have seen video of the auditions for the “Manatees”, right? Think Laker girls, but with 300 lb. men.
whaaaaaaaaaaah! how did it happen ? it’s over for Houston this season
I, for one, can’t wait for Tim’s next update from camp.
Meanwhile, here are some of the acclaims for Tim and his daily reports from G.S. Field:
” A must-read….It lingers with you long after you’ve left the computer. ”
–Mary
” The best post of the year. ”
–John
” Peter Abraham Who? ”
–Jane
“He’s the Mark Melancon of blog posters. He is that good.”
–Sloppy Joe 44
Hey Pete: (or anyone else for that matter)
Do you think you can give me some information on the intrasquad game? Time, who plays, etc.
Sorry if I missed a post regarding this earlier, but I am debating going and would like to know if it’s worth it. Also, will legends field be pretty crowded, or can you pretty much sit alone and close?
Thanks.
mel,
Thats just mean. But to answer your question. Knowing they have had a long winning streak. Yep. Its going to be fun seeing who gets the first seed. Lakers up on my Spurs by a half. What do you think?
“Giambi said he was in bed at 9, he didn’t say he was alone. Ha ha.”
He also didn’t say he wasn’t doing Steroids in bed so maybe that applies too?
Sorry, the Manatees are for the Marlins, not Tampa.
Maybe Tampa could get their own intra-state “Chocolate Chip-endale” all male dance squad. Call ‘em, I dunno, the “Rays” maybe?
wow count the Houston Rockets out of the playoff now, sucks for them.
SoS,
No mean would be saying that you must be doing back flips in your office right now. The news just came out of nowhere. So, now Yao in the Olympics? 1.2 billion people are crying a river of tears.
*no Yao*
Who will be the #1 seed. Lakers,Spurs,Suns,Hornets,Jazz?
i’ll predict an eastern team winning it all
SoS,
Take a look at the remaining schedules…
Hornets will be #1 seed no doubt in my mind, I like LA but there is something that I don’t like about them.
Can anyone tell me who is pitching Sunday. I’ve any one from Phil to Andy.
saucY, Lebron James can definitely win it all this season, I don’t think teams understand how much better Cleveland got by that trade.
saucy,
The Pistons looked scary good against the Suns. I think Boston’s come down to earth just a bit.
You know what I love Giambi but if he was working hard at 1B last year it sure would have saved us a lot of trouble (and would have added to the run totals).
saucy,
You might be right. The West is going to beat up on each other this year. While Detroit or Boston breases through the playoffs and has something in the tank for the finals.
Brandon,
Hornets have been struggling of late. I say its either Lakers or Spurs.
mel, agreed. if i had to pick i’d say detroit. but i don’t have to. so i won’t say anything.
saucY,
lol. I’m very superstitious so I won’t say anything either!
youngtimer,
Giambi cant stay healthy enough to play first base full time. Im surprised he came to camp with a glove. We need his bat more than his fielding. I think we should just keep him at dh rotating with Matsui and occasionally Damon. I know his average is better when he plays D. But playing D=dl.
If anyone finds a picture of Giambi, can you post a link? Pete wasn’t descriptive enough (j/k).
Well, Giambi is like 50.
I say DL Giambi, sign Bonds to be DH. Duncan takes first or maybe we get a lefty 1B to platoon with Shelley and Matsui comes off the bench and spells Damon, Melky and Abreu over the course of the season. We would have an excellent offense and Bonds takes the pressure off everybody else because all the reporters would be hounding him.
lol, Steve, Bonds would want to come here because the media attention wouldn’t be on him.
You’re not a loser because you went to bed early last night, Jason. You’re a loser because you’re always hurt, you can’t field, you can’t hit, you’re a contractual albatross, you’re a cheat, and despite all that, you have somehow felt to this point that you deserve to go out and party.
I just found out that NYU’s graduation will be at Yankee Stadium. I just graduated from NYU. I had no interest in going to my commencement ceremony. I’m totally going now.
congrats!
If Giambi has a monster year, would it be worth the extra $17 million to have him be in another contract year? Probably not, but it’s worth considering if he does in fact have a big year.
I wouldnt bring him back. We have Matsui and Damon who needs time at dh. Thats not including Posada,Arod and Jeter for half day rests. Giambi limits our lineup flexability. I know most would disagree on this but when Giambi was hurt last year we actually played better than when he was in the lineup. More speed, more rest for older players and better defensivley. If we that 22 mil is burning a hole in our pocket(even though i dont want another long term contract on this team)use it to sign Texiera at least that would solve out first base problems.
I think Bonds would be a great fit. Matsui at DH, bring ing Damon off the bench. To those saying he would destroy the clubhouse chemistry, I doubt he would affect it much, if at all. Jeter and other veterans set the tone of the clubhouse, and the youngsters follow them. Also, if Bonds was creating a legitimate problem, he would probably be cut very quickly (and not for big money, no one seems to want him). This is exactly why we pay Girardi millions of dollars a year, to make sure these guys are doing what they are supposed to be doing and focusing on the one thing that matters, winning games. To think that Bonds or any major league conditioned athlete would mind jogging during warmups is ridiculous.
Last year, Bonds hit .276 while slugging 28 home runs and having an OBP of .480. He walked 132 times and struck out only 54 times. He only played 126 games. One could argue his season was almost as good as A-rod’s (offensively obviously). He still has some of the best eyes in the league. The more I think about it the more I would love to get the deal done. Those complaining about the money it would cost the Yankees are just wasting time…if Barry Bonds doesn’t come to the Yankees it isn’t because he’ll cost 8 million dollars a year its because they don’t think he can field or they think he’ll disrupt the clubhouse or whatever reason. There is NO salary cap(surprise!) and the Yankees are the most willing team to spend in the MLB (money, not prospects). He’d probably come in and meet with 5-6 executives at least before anything gets done, knowing fully the expectations laid out for him.
I can’t believe how hostile some people here are toward Giambi. I guess cause he’s not golden boy Andy Pettitte his HGH past is held against him. Where were you haters in 2003, 2005, and 2006? Cheering while Giambi launched bomb after bomb I bet.
I like Giambi but I think his tenure is up after this year. The Yankees should look into Teixera and move Matsui to DH next year. Even if Tex doesn’t hit the market they should let him walk. Nothing personal, its just business.
I guess everyone here figures winning the WS this year is a forgone conclusion… or else why would you not consider someone who would probably:
1) accept a ONE year contract
2) could be had for a lot less then his value
3) is unquestionable the most exciting player to watch, when he picks up a bat and walks to the plate.
4) posted over a 1.000 OPS as an outfield. What might he do as a DH?
Yes, the main reason NOT to consider Bonds is… because he’s Barry Bonds.
I guess the Sox could let Papi play first and sign Bonds. Would you like to face an inning of: Bonds, Papi, Manny?
Would you like to have an inning of: Bonds, ARod, Giambi?
What does an FA with an OPS of over 1.000 cost. $20m/yr? For a long contract? Bonds could probably be had for $10m and incentives.
Certainly there would be no percs. He would come on as just one of the guys. Bonds doesn’t have a lot of choices, and to play his last year on the Yankees and MAYBE play in a WS… that’s a LOT of motivation. Maybe he would melo a bit.
I think most fans will find that NOBODY is a jerk when they hit walk-off HRs for your team, NOBODY is a jerk if the help you make the PS.
I don’t like Bonds the person. But Bonds the ballplayer is still electric. And just imagine the piss*ng-and-moaning from Red Sox Nation.
You root for the laundry. RJ was as nasty as you can get.
Clemens is an egomaniac. And we lived through Bobby Bonds.
This guy could head-butt a HR to RF. You have to consider it. And you don’t think Melky, Cano and all the kids will be overjoyed to hang with Bonds?
yet again OldYanksFan with a less than convincing argument.
p.s. Celtics will beat Detroit March 5th
And yet again another brilliant, insiteful, full-of-facts rebuttal from Boston Dave. However, it is clever Dave, in that you can simply cut & paste that comment and use it to rebut every comment I make from now on. As a matter of fact, change the name and you can use it to rebut anything anybody says from now on. Wow… it IS brilliant!
This new found Yankee energy this ST is for two reasons:
1. New manager – no one has a relationship with Girardi like they did with Torre, so everyone is trying to impress the new guy. Also, Girardi contacted the team during the offseason and made it clear that he wanted a healthier team.
2. Contract years – half of the team is in a contract year. Not only are they trying to impress the new Joe but they’re looking to make an impression when free agency calls after the season.

I know education has grown leaps and bounds since the 30′s but I think the word you were hoping for was “insiGHtful”.
Your lack of facts is a key to your poor skills in creating an argument that even resembles something worth reading, however, your complete misunderstanding of the English language only adds to your idiocy.
Keep posting as long as you enjoy it. Though unless you plan on some serious self-improvement in your twilight years, keep in mind that you aren’t fooling anybody. Your posts are comedic at best.
