Geese beat Gators 6-2

Peter Abraham
February
27

As intrasquad games go, it wasn’t fine art.

The Yankees committed seven errors and issued eight walks in seven innings. The errors came from Brett Gardner, Justin Christian, Chris Woodward, Cody Ransom, Nick Green, Eduardo Nunez and Marcos Vechionacci. Keep in mind that it was 54 degrees and windy on a wet field.

The only extra-base hit was a double by Morgan Ensberg, who was 2 for 3 with a walk and scored three runs.

Good thing it’s not a one day try-out to make the team =D

  2. tom

    thank you pete

  3. DMan

    Shake the rust off Yanks

  4. Stephen

It says a lot about the defensive prospects at 1B that I’m rooting for Ensberg, who’s never played the position, to make the team.

  5. www.jobathehutt.com

7 errors and 8 walks? championship baseball. love it :)

  6. Jimmy

I’m rootinf for Ensberg to make the team. Keep it up!

  7. AlexCT

Nick Green NOOOOO!! he is supposed to be our savior this year!!!

  8. bottom line

Great stuff, Peter. To me, baseball begins with the first box score — so this is it. Life begins anew…

PS — watch the guys who are out of options for the pen. I believe that’s Bruney, Rasner and Henn. They may not be the best or the most exciting, but I’ll bet they get every chance to at least start the season in New York.

  9. Ranting Guy

First ‘game’ of the season. Getting some live innings in is what it’s all about. As long as nobody pulled a hammy or bent anything in a way it isn’t supposed to bend, it was a positive day.

  10. Drew

Ensberg is well on his way to being this year’s Josh Phelps!

  11. S.o.S.27

    from previous thread
We need to have a spring training game where the Scranton and Trenton All Stars are on one team vs. The Yankees. Who would pay to watch that?

Ensberg is my sleeper to win out the firstbase job.
Can we get the full boxscore of the game?

  12. Barry

Well at least we know one thing… The Yankees still are scared to throw strike… oh those base on balls

  13. Kyle

You should keep in mind that the 7 errors and 8 walks really happened over 14 innings total.

  14. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    I repeat:

You can’t judge a pitching staff based on the very first intrasquad game.

If they’re still pitching like this on March 31st, then you might have a concern, but not today.

Right now they’re all healthy, that’s what matters.

  15. anti-pettitte

sean henn and bruney are scrubs and can’t throw strikes. bruney lost weight, so what? prove to me you can throw strikes and i dont care if you weigh 400 lbs (sabathia)

  16. SJ44

Don’t go too crazy analyzing the results of an intrasquad game. They don’t mean anything.

Does anybody remember the results of last years intrasquad games and how they impacted the season? Didn’t think so.

Its just something to breakup the monotony of ST (at least until the game start) and nothing more.

  17. AlexCT

    to: anti-pettie

bruney didn’t pitch today. and no one likes a negative nancy

  18. anti-pettitte

yeah, just wait until he pitches. you probably thought mussina and henn reinvented themselves. didnt you know ‘reinventing’ yourself takes a little help. ask andy pettitte.

  19. frits

what are the odds of jackson making the roster? or is he slotted for AAA?

  20. frits

does anti-pettitte refer to an irrational dislike for mr. pettitte, or an alter ego of andy pettitte, like bizarro pettitte?

  21. SJ44

    Frits,

Jackson will probably start the year, along with Tabata, at Trenton (AA).

Anti-Pettitte is just a troll killing time in the blog today.

He has already predicted that Giambi is on HGH and Pettitte isn’t and will be cut during the season.

With nuggets like that, we won’t be short of “quality” baseball analysis in here today.

  22. kd

Does anyone know if Tabata’s hand is better? Can we use this year as a marker in his power development?

  23. S.o.S.27

    frits,
Gardner will get the call before Jackson. He will start in the minors and wont see the majors till next year at best. Tabata is in the same boat. But who knows. Melky wasnt expected to make his debut that early.

  24. Geo

This doesn’t seem to bother me with the errors and such because of the players that played today although if it was Yankee household names such as Jeter, Cano, Rodriguez, Wang, and others then I would have a problem.

bottom line, this doesn’t really bother me because half of these guys won’t even play a huge role this year.

  25. Marc W

does anyone think Ensberg will make it? I hope he does

  27. 2008 Yankees

It should be fun watching the “Battle of the 1B” again this year, and perhaps for the last time. If I recall correctly, future HOFer Josh Phelps “won” his roster spot in Spring Training and was gone by June. I know Ensberg could be a BIG help with the team but I would rather keep Duncan at first with Betemit and Giambi in the mix and have Gardner make the team as the defensive replacement OFer.

  28. Elizabeth

Duncan flashed some serious leather at first in September. I think he’s got a chance to win the job if Girardi values defense so highly.

  29. dan in nj

Tabata has a good chance for a September call up. He is rule V eligible after this season and will need to go on the 40 man roster.

  30. Chrissy

    Alright Morgan Ensberg. Woohoo!

  31. JT

wow, no way can Tabata be rule 5 eligible… isn’t he only 19, 20 tops….

  32. Fran

I am pulling for Ensberg too.

  33. dan in nj

This will be Tabata’s 5th rule V draft after the season so he is eligible. He was signed in 04 at 16 and that is when the clock started. so 4,5,6,7,and now 08 so count the years.

  34. Phil

Tabata is not rule 5 eliigible after this year.

  35. Ranting Guy

Anti-Pettitte sounds like the troll mate from which NYPD113 spawned that impish Chris troll. I wonder who was facing which way …

Plenty of spots opening up on the 40-man (and $$$ of the payroll) when some of the older FA’s and that wasted one are off the books. If he’s not ML-ready by next season and they plan on keeping Tabata, they won’t leave him out there for a Rule V.

  36. Sean Serritella Yankees Daily

I notice that it wasn’t the Yankee veterans who made the errors.

  37. Florida Yank

Austin Jackson clearly showed why he’s every bit of 3 years away. No plate discipline. Jose Tabata is far ahead.

  38. rbj

54 & wet? What I wouldn’t give for it to be 54 & wet, rather than 14 and snowy.

  39. hmmm

“Austin Jackson clearly showed why he’s every bit of 3 years away. No plate discipline.”

    is this a serious post?

  40. SJ44

    Hmmm,

    Yup. We had’em all day.

Folks actually believe an intrasquad game matters. More precisely, they feel they can draw conclusions from them.

We had our regulars making fun of them, and the game, for most of the day.

For others though, this “game” was a mirror into the soul of the Yankees season.

  41. YankeeJosh

    SJ44,

Obviously the intrasquad game is meaningless. Any knowledgeable baseball fan knows that the Yankees season will make or break based on how they fare against South Florida! ;-)

  42. Jed

Shocking to see Sean Henn get beat up today… thats new for him.

  43. Ed Wood

An error by THE Marcos Vechionacci? The Yanks are doomed…dooomed, I say.
