Intrasquad game underway in Tampa

February
27

Melky Cabrera facing Mike Mussina in the top of the first inning. It’s 54 degrees here in Tampa. Check this post for updates.

Struck him out looking on 3 pitches. The Moose is tremendous!

Jeter slaps the first pitch into right for a single. Take that, UPenn geeks!

Cano up now. Single up the middle. Gardner overruns the ball and Jeter goes to third.

Posada grounds up the first base line and is tagged out by Moose as Jeter scores. 1-0 Geese.

Shelley Duncan flies to left to end the inning.

One run (unearned) on two hits and one error. 1-0 Geese middle of the first.

Damon grounds to first, Molina flies to right (nice running catch in the gap by Tabata) and Abreu pops to second base. Karstens looked sharp.

No runs, no hits. 1-0 Geese end of the first.

SECOND INNING
Morgan Ensberg singles up the middle on an 0-2 pitch.

Wilson Betemit walks. Moose’s Intrasquad WHIP is horrible.

Jason Lane pops to right. One out.

Jose Tabata hit a room-service double-play grounder to short that took a bad hop over Jeter’s head. Ensberg scores, 2-0 Geese.

Melky Cabrera 4-6-3 to end the inning.

One run on two hits and one left on. Middle of the second, 2-0 Geese.

Mike Mussina’s line: 2 4 2 1 1 1 30 pitches/23 strikes.

(that’s innings, hits, runs, unearned runs, walks, strikeouts)

BOTTOM OF THE SECOND
A-Rod pops to first base. He is being pelted by garbage by the jeering crowd.

(just kidding)

Giambi flies to center. Karstens is dealing.

Ransom singles to left, ending Karsten’s perfect outing.

Nick Green lines to second.

No runs on one hit, one left. We’ve played two in Tampa and it’s 2-0 Geese.

Darrell Rasner replaces Moose on the mound.

Line for Karstens: 2 1 0 0 0 0 20/13

Jeter strikes out swinging. Geeks celebrate.

Cano strikes out looking. Rasner is the man.

Posada now up.

This live blog is sponsored by Lowe’s. Let’s build something together!

Posada reaches on an error by Justin Christian, the new left fielder.

Coming up later here on YES, the Buddy Groom Story.

Shelley Duncan grounds slowly to short. Chris Woodward throws it away, allowing Posada to go to third. Shelley gets a hit, however.

Morgan Ensberg flies to center, ending the inning.

No runs, no hits, two errors (!). Middle of the third, 2-0 Geese. Back after this.

BOTTOM OF THE THIRD
Scott Pattterson now pitching. Massive changes for the Geese. Austin Jackson, Alberto Gonzalez, Bernie Castro and Francisco Cervelli now playing.

Chris Woodward singles to center.

I’m joined here on the live blog by Mike Vaccaro of the Post.

Brett Gardner grounds into a force, 4-6.

“So Mike, what do you think of the Yankees?”

“I’m split,” he says, always a comedian.

“What your take on Scott Patterson, Mike?”

“You’d have to assume I’m paying attention. I’m too busy reading LoHud.com.”

Justin Christian now up. 6-3 double play. The ball hit Patterson on the foot on the way by but he seems to be OK. Nice play by the Attorney General.

No runs on one hit and no errors. We’ve played three here in Tampa and it remains 2-0 Geese. Thanks to Mike Vaccaro for joining us here on the blog.

“My pleasure, Pete.”

TOP OF THE FOURTH
Dan McCutchen now pitching for the Gators. All the front-line players are out of the game.

Betemit grounds to second. There’s actually a decent crowd here on a cold day, probably 1,000 people or so.

Jason Lane walks. Jose Tabata hammers the next pitch to left for a base hit.

Austin Jackson up.

McCutchen’s fans Jackson with a wicked curveball.

The clubhouse is open, I have to run. Fun’s over. Back later with some notes and quotes.

    PLAY BALL !

  2. YankeesBen

    Peter is the best.

  3. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    yeah!! 8)

  4. Lori

On my feet, with my moose hat on: “MOOOOOSE!” (not that I don’t love Melky, but it’s MOOOOSE!

  5. mel

Did the UPenn geeks consider offense? Because that surely would get him out of the cellar!

Go Yankees! uh, Geese! uh, Gators!

  6. DMan

This is sort of like Spring Traning for Pete and his live-blogging too!

  7. Lori

This is better than Gameday! Pete - U ROCK!

  8. Bryan

    Moose sucks

  9. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/

Igawa later retreated to the locker room and signed a lot of fan mail. A nice gesture, but I haven’t seen a messier signature since Mitch Williams.

    Igawa gets fan mail!! ;)

  10. Bill from NJ

Moose already getting shelled in ‘08.

  11. gayle

That 54 degree weather is just getting them used to it for OPening Day here in NYC

  12. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

You guys can’t be serious can you?

  13. Joba the Great

It’s really not the same without Michael Kay going into business for himself during his commentary.

  14. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

calm down it’s practice game 1 alot of people are off rythmn

  15. Elizabeth

Must be tough for the pitchers to be facing the best lineup in all of baseball. :)

I was going to be a little concerned about Melk striking out, but at least it was looking and not swinging at a high fastball.

  16. vinny-b

    Peter: thank you.

  17. raymagnetic ™

“Moose already getting shelled in ‘08.”

Yeah he’s getting shelled. Two singles and an unearned run in the 1st INTRASQUAD game of the year. That guy is a bum!

Seriously you guys need to relax.

  18. mel

    Way to bounce back, Moose!!!

(Thanks, Pete, this is fun. Can you tell that we miss the action?)

  19. Andrea

Why on EARTH did they choose the Geese and the Gators?

  20. Bill from NJ

    raymagnetic:

    Calm down.

  21. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

So is this what it is going to be like this year? Phil gives up two singles in the first and he is a bum?

  22. Elizabeth

I was kidding about Melky, for the record.

Yeah, people need to chill. I almost worry when the Yankees dominate in ST because it’s sort of that “bad dress rehearsal, good performance” theory. I like to see individual players hitting their strides, though. Alex was on fire coming out of ST last year, and look what happened in April.

  23. raymagnetic ™

Bill if you were joking I apologize. Can’t read sarcasm on the net unless it’s blatant.

  24. DMan

I’m so happy baseball is back =]

  25. Jeff

I love our OF prospects- Tabata, Jackson, Gardner.

  26. Interesting

I don’t think the hitting was in question for the UPenn “Geeks”. I thought the study was on defense.

  27. Lori

Andrea - probably because Gossage (Goose) and Guidry (Gator) are the coaches. But, that’s just a guess.

  28. Josh

I am so jealous you are able to watch this live pete, haha

  29. PBL

Geese are for Goose Gossage, Gators are for Ron Guidry

  30. TurnTwo

ray, i got your sarcasm… you actually beat me to it!

  31. DMan

Karstens, carrying his Team-USA showing into the first ST game! Nice!

  32. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

    yeh J-Tab !

  33. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

Jeff should take Mike’s spot for the 5th starter! MIKE IS A BUM, HE STINKS!!

    ;)

  34. MIke

    MOOSE PLEASE RETIRE NOW !!

  35. Tom

Nice to see Abreu started where he left off last year.

  36. Spidur

Woot! Thanks for the updates, Pete!

  37. Bill from NJ

    Tom - Ha!

  38. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

Please if you are going to sarcastic please put a ;) so we know!

  39. SJ44

I believe Abreu’s last AB was a HR in the 9th inning of Game 4 of the ALDS.

Don’t know where the, “nice to see Abreu started where he left off last year” fits into the analysis.

Its an intrasquad game. How ’bout we save the venom for March 31?

  40. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

it’s game one shut up about Mussina right now it’s feeling out the game for these guys

  41. A Yankee Fan

Thank you Pete for the live bloggin. I’m LOVING IT!

  42. SJ44

If these are jokes, I apologize.

Its impossible to tell the jokes from reality in the blog at times.

  43. hensely meulens

is this thing still updating? the last thing i see is cano’s hit…

  44. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    sj

exactly sj that is why I say if people are joking to put this after ;)

  45. A Yankee Fan

What kind of pitch(es) is Moose working on?

  46. Andrea

    Lori: I’m dumb. Thanks :)

  47. DMan

Yah.. Lets not take ST so serious.. I mean the Mets tied Michigan 4-4 yesterday..

I’m pretty sure that doesn’t mean the Mets suck.. And I’m also pretty sure that doesn’t mean Michigan should become an MLB team..

  48. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

Pete just curious even though it doesn’t really mean anything what is Mike’s fb at?

  49. Bryan

Moose is good… oh wait no he’s not

  50. mel

May I suggest something? Bite your tongue before you snap at someone? There’s a good chance they’re being “sarcastic”, “clever”, or “witty”.

Of course, feel free to tell me to shut up. :)

  51. Bill from NJ

jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge - where does one get a smiley like that?

  52. CaptainsCorner

Mussina looks to be in mid season form…..

  53. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

Jose Tabata hits a chopper to short that appeared to be a double play ball but it hit a rock in the infield, shooting over Woodward’s head for a RBI single

    http://bombersbeat.mlblogs.com/bombers_beat/2008/02/lineups_for_the.html#comments

Okay who gets fired for that? A rock in the infield.

  54. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    ; )

Hopefully it shows up, you put the two right next to one another.

  55. Elizabeth

So if we’re supposed to take, from one intrasquad game, that Karstens is suddenly a better pitcher than Moose, then…well…I don’t know what to say. People need to remember that this is PRACTICE for all the players. Do you want Moose to throw on full-strength only to injure himself by mid-March?

  56. Lori

Jeter, that bum. Get rid of him. (I’d put a smiley face here like Jennifer suggested if I only knew how!)

  57. JimL

I thought Jeter was on the Geese, how did the ball bounce over his head if he is on the bench?

  58. Pique

What is a “room-service double play grounder”? Does that imply that it was supposed to be an easy DP?

  59. Tseng

2 runs in less than 2 innings. Moose should be cut! Just kiddin.

  60. Clare

    What’s a room-service double-play grounder?

  61. pat

“a bad hop over Jeter’s head”

    Isn’t Jeter on the Geese?

  62. Elizabeth

May I suggest that, if Melky ever gets traded, his new team never start him against Moose? ;)

  63. Bill from NJ

jennifer- that one is not the same. I want the nice yellow one.

  64. MIke

Great Job Moose !! YOU SUCK !

  65. Mike S.

Thanks for the description on Tabata’s “single.” One of those things that shows up in what would be the boxscore but something you have to see to know it was really a 6-4-3.

Pete can take over for Sterling anytime!

  66. DMan

I do like hearing the positives on Karstens.. He tore it up over the winter for Team USA.

  67. TIME 4 #27

Peter; maybe you can post a vidio from the game

  68. vinny-b

What is a “room-service double play grounder”? Does that imply that it was supposed to be an easy DP

    made to order.

  69. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    Pique

yes that means it is an easy dp.

And yes jeter is a goose.

  70. Say it ain't so

“A-Rod pops to first base. He is being pelted by garbage by the jeering crowd.”

    LOL!!

  71. Spidur

    Bill from NJ -

What jennifer is saying is that when you put ; and ) next to each other (no space) you get the ;)

  72. Elizabeth

Bill– just put a semi-colon and a close-parentheses next to each other. For a regular smiley, it’s a colon and close-parentheses.

  73. Tseng

Moose was right on pace for a typical 6 inning 4 run start.

  74. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

bill, you asked me to show you :P that is how you do it. Semi colon, and )

  75. Real World

Aren’t Jeter & Tabata both on the Geese Pete?

Well, it’s only the first intrasquad game, but Mike Mus….nevermind.

  76. Bill from NJ

    ;) test

  77. JimL

I can see we are also in ST for posting rules ;)

  78. mel

    Bill,

No space between a colon and a close parenthesis gives the big smile.

semicolon & close parenthesis gives you a wink

8 & close parenthesis gives you sunglasses

    no spaces.

  79. frits\

live blog?? this *&#@ is money! thanks pete!

  80. mel

    Bill,

If you hover the mouse over any of the emoticons, it gives you the “code”

  81. Bill from NJ

    Tseng- only 4 runs? ;)

  82. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    :D :) ;) 8)

  83. Elizabeth

    Pete–

Your Kay impersonations are cracking me up. “We’ve played two in Tampa…”

    Testing

  86. A Yankee Fan

what a shame. no perfect game for karstens.

  87. mel

    frits!!

You’re the guy who tussled with flam. Someone said flim, but I knew that wasn’t it. Long time no see (if it’s you).

  88. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

you can also type the word with colons surrounding it and get it.

  89. DMan

    Wow Ransom got a hit?

Nice 2 innings by Karstens, it sounds like.

  90. Bill

Pete, I envy you! What I would give to be watching a baseball game right now…

  91. frits\

oh its me! yes, i did tussle with flam, and i emerged victorious. he didn’t know what to do when i pulled out those photos. that was rich. but no, i never left lohud. just lurking in the shadows, waiting for spring.

  92. gayle

So for these intra squad games do they have field announcers ie who is at bat etc or just like you were watching a game at the local park

  93. Ranting Guy

What? Moose walked Betemit? ALREADY????? He’s as useles as Pavano!! Send him for a TJ operation!!! DFA him now!!!!

SJ - Yes that was a joke …. I think some bloggers (complainers) are using spring training to get ‘in shape’ for the season too. At least I hope they are. If they’re serious at this point they need help.

If anyone out there gets a sense I’m poking fun at them, I probably am. If so, don’t watch games and comment on the blog without adult supervision this year. Some really jump off the deep end way too easily.

  94. mel

Wow, raymagnetic. Did you learn that in anger management?!

  95. DMan

Hahaha, live blogger sponsership! The marketing wave of the future!

  96. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    :-x test again.

So are both Jeff and Darell better than moose?

  97. TurnTwo

sponsored by Lowes… ha! nice, Pete.

  98. Fran

Pete - are you sitting in the Lowe’s broadcast booth like John and Susan?

  99. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

Pete I hope you got paid for that commercial.

You forgot that 15th out was sponcered by gieco 15 minutes will save you 15% on your car insurance.

And that call to the pen was spononcered by cingeluar.

  100. Elizabeth

I had tears of laughter at the Lowe’s comment. Seriously, Pete. You should consider a very specific career change as a NY sportscaster impersonator. Probably only 5 people would get it enough to laugh, but I don’t care.

  101. jyates29

Error by the left fielder…tremendous depth from our position players…let’s draft some of those next year!

  102. frits

is pete going to bring in a daily news reporter in the 5th inning like sterling? if so, he should make sure that he asks the reporter a question and then answers it for him, talks constantly through the inning, and then thank the reporter for the 10 total words he said.

  103. raymagnetic ™

“Wow, raymagnetic. Did you learn that in anger management?!”

lol, I actually learned that on The Wire’s blog.

  104. JimL

Justin Christian didn’t want Gardner to feel bad, so he booted one too

  105. Andrea

    Pete’s too funny.

  106. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

And that break was sponcered by McDonalds have you had your break today?

And that break from a break was sponcered by Joe’s medical group a place for you to go after you ate your Mcdonalds.

  107. raymagnetic ™

    :/ test

  108. Andrea

You all realize how desperate we are for baseball that we’re sitting here waiting on Pete’s every word…with an intrasquad game…

  109. Ricky Rios

Pete- the “geeks” are talking about Jeter’s defense, not his offense…I know it’s just a joke but at least let it make sense.

  110. Linnea

A-Rod pops to first base. He is being pelted by garbage by the jeering crowd.

    (just kidding)

I was very worried until I read the “just kidding.” You’re a funny guy.

  111. Blimpie

sorry, i’m new. what’s with the UPenn joke?

  112. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    Blimpie

THey did a study that said Jeter is the worst ss in baseball.

  113. Mike R.

Karstens and Rasner are representing. We are witnessing the first shots in the War for the long relief spot.

  114. frits

    ACTIOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNN JAAAAAAAAACCKKKSONNNNNNNN!

  115. Yanksrule57

    8) test. Perfect emoticon for sunny (but cold today) Florida.

  116. Paddy R

blimpie, upenn geeks ran a study that got all over jeter’s fielding/range.

peteabe i don’t know what i would do at work without this blog. you’re like len elmore on the play-by-play!

  117. Y's Guy

    Goose’s Nation! rising up!

    Gator’s suck!

  119. Yanksrule57

Forgive me for reposting but if anyone knows the answer I would appreciate it:

Wasn’t John Sterling the voice of the Yankees at one time? I now he now does radio but what happened there? Did Kay take his job, or did Sterling P-off George and was banished to radio hell with Suzyn?

  120. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    Pete you’re a crack up.

  121. Skippy

Who’s coming into the booth for the Daily News fifth?

  122. S.o.S.27

    BLOCKQUOTE
frits-What happened between you and flam. It died too guickly. I was going to be the promoter on a pay per blog stand off.We left a lot of money on the table.:D
    BLOCKQUOTE(YES I MISS IT)

  123. frits

just wondering - too soon to start chanting “18-1″, given that its intersquad, and we’re not actually playing boston?

  124. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

dammit Brett and Justin better steal 2nd and 3rd base in this game

  125. rodg12

How did a ball bounce off Jeter’s head defending for Mussina when he hit against him the inning before?

  126. gayle

Yanksrule he was only the voice on radio never on TV. Michael Kay was his color guy in the radio booth then he went on to TV. As far as I know he Sterling was never on TV for the Yanks

  127. Elizabeth

Yanksrule–Sterling and Kay used to do radio announcing on WABC (770). About a year after the YES network came to be, Kay got the on-air job as play-by-play man. Sterling stayed on radio. Yankees games immediately prior to that had been on MSG and PIX with Kaat, Al Trautwig, Bobby Murcer, Phil Rizzuto, etc.

  128. A 22

lets take it easy on moose people …it’s one 2 inning intersquad… so he gives up a hit to Jeter and Cano. Both great hitters.im guessing a good pitch on the outside corner that derek just “jetered” into right or maybe the signature inside out swing we have all come to know and love. Any team in the majors would take moose as a #5 starter. he will find it.

  129. Ricky Rios

    Yanksrule57

Sterling has never done TV. He’s been on radio since approx. 1990…He IS the voice of the Yankees.

  130. DMan

Wow even guest-hosts. This could be the best, live, intra-squad, lohud, Spring training blog ever.

  131. Ricky Rios

why the hell are the regulars out… I though this was boot camp…those sissies should be playing all out, a full game.

  132. frits

little confused about that blockquote - but i’ll explain. back in december, joba appeared at NY penn station. i noticed on a thread that this fellow named “flam” was claiming to have talked to joba, and that they exchanged phone numbers, and that they would hang out and party, if my memory serves me correctly.

i thought he was joking, but then he kept at it, so i called him out on it. he continued his little charade until i actually posted pictures showing that i was there, and showing the crowd around joba (making it impossible for anyone to “chat” with him), and he slinked off into the blogosphere night.

  133. rodg12

Yanks draw better for an intrasquad than Marlins do for regular season game :)

  134. DMan

Thanks for blogging Pete! That was great!

  137. Tom in NY

It is single digit temps here and blowing snow sideways - I must have cabin fever to be excited about an intrasquad game. This is great!

  138. Elizabeth

Hee hee @ The Attorney General. :) How unfortunate for ‘berto.

  139. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

Action will get his revenge soon ;)

  140. Lori

So not getting any work done. This is hilarious!

  141. S.o.S.27

    frits,
Yes i was on this blog that day. I remember it all. There was a christmas tree. He had to go to a meeting at an odd hour. I wanted it to continue but it died out.

I was going to promote the continuation.
    I already had a title.
FRITS VS. FLAM “THE MOMENT OF TRUTH”

  142. Yanksrule57

    Elizabeth and Gayle,

Thanks for the info. I watched WPIX as a kid (Rizzuto, Messer & White) but lived in Va throughout the 90’s and early 00’s, and didn’t know how the current TV announcers roles evolved.

  143. DMan

Well, all this live-blogging did was increase my craving for more baseball..

I thought maybe this would quench my thirst a little bit.. But nope, now I just want more.

  144. Lori

What - it’s over. Now what do I do?

  145. Andrea

DMan: I want baseball so bad I’m enduring Mike and the Mad Dog.

    We need baseball SOON.

  146. GoSox

FWIW, the geeks never said Derek Jeter was a bad offensive player (and they’d be wrong if they did say that). The geeks said he was a horrible defensive player, which assertion his performance today would support. Of course, the geeks believe deeply in the concept of not drawing any conclusions based on small sample size, so a single error in a Spring Training game would be more “of interest” than something they would celebrate.

  147. tom

    your leaving?

your going to leave us hanging

    who is going to win?

  148. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    :bangheadondesk:

  149. frits

s.o.s. - i was looking forward to it. you were a great promoter. i guess flam is still stuck in that meeting…

  150. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

    dammit Pete what happened ?

  151. Yanksrule57

    Ricky Rios,

Sorry but I missed the start of the John Sterling era. I was underway on various ships with the Navy for the better part of 1989-1995.

  152. kd

Work is so much slower without knowing that tabata hammered a ball to left. Man, I am a Yankee addict.

  153. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

I can’t believe we got Rizzuto’d by Pete

  154. Lori

Talk about a cliffhanger . . . How do we find out more??

  155. jay destro

Coming up later here on YES, the Buddy Groom Story.

  156. StandingO'Neil

Sad thing is, I much rather know what happens in the game from here on out then in the early innings. I rather see how the guys fighting for jobs do. Seems the young outfielders are a tad nervous, with Gardner over running a ball and Christian making an error. But I am aware that its Pete’s job to get the quotes from the “stars” so its no knock on him.

  157. Andrea

You’re so right Brandon. Pete definitely just Rizzuto’d us.

  158. mel

    frits,

To be fair, Flam’s been around lately.

moose sucks already! usually pitchers are dominant in the spring because the batters eyes are not up to speed w/ the pitches, yet moose is already getting shelled. i guess it doesnt take much to adjust to a 80 mpg fastball. just wait until may.. please cut him now.

  163. Elizabeth

Wow, people are fickle. Just a week ago, everyone was praising Moose when word came from Girardi that he looked really good. Now look at the response. Come ON. He threw 23 of his 30 pitches for strikes.

  164. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Erm, anti-pettitte, pitchers in spring training aren’t supposed to be in mid-season form.

  165. SJ44

Anyone actually taking something of substance from an intrasquad game really should be banned from posting in a baseball blog.

The lack of baseball IQ is insulting to anybody who reads such nonsense.

  166. Elizabeth

Rebecca–I’d be worried if they were. Talk about an injury-risk!

  167. anti-pettitte

girardi was also praising bruney… haha! i think hes just trying to motivate them but the reality is they suck. you either have it or you dont. bruney never had control of his pitches what makes you think he will be better this year? because he lost weight? hehehae.

  168. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    Elizabeth: Agreed!

Also, do you have AIM? we’ve been talking everywhere, so I figure it’s probably the next logical thing to do.

  169. Jeff NJ

Great job with the live blog Pete, even reading it a couple of hours later was a great read. Two questions though, Was the live blog actually sponsored by Lowe’s? If not that was hilarious. And two, was that really Vaccaro? If so, I have never seen an interview mid live blog, that was outstanding!

  170. Travis G.

great stuff Pete, thanks for the updates.

  171. Elizabeth

Rebecca–yes I do. I’ll comment on your LJ with it!

  172. anti-pettitte

at least i don’t say i was close friends with a-rod unlike some other poster here (SJ44)

  173. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    Elizabeth: Awesome.

  174. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

There are certain people who post here , that I don’t think i’ve ever seen them post a postive thing.

  175. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Elizabeth: I’m trying to IM you but it keeps saying your offline, mayhaps you can IM me?

  176. DMan

Yah I guess the Mets must be terrible too, only being able to tie Michigan 4-4… That, or Michigan is amazing.. =P

  177. rbj

Oh man, some live baseball, even if it was just the first intrasquad game of the year. Not that I’m a baseball junkie. No, I can quit anytime, I just don’t want to.

  178. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

rbj: I imagine that’s how we all feel!

  179. anti-pettitte

yankees good players: arod, jeter, abreu, cano, giambi (on hgh this year), hughes, chamberlain, wang, kennedy, farnsworth (he will be good), rivera

crap players: pettitte (minus hgh), moose, bruney, damon, melky, posada (took hgh last year so he will suck this year), betemit, duncan, igawa, etc.

  180. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

Anti-Pettitte can you go back to your hole where you came from

  181. MikeEff - Shelley at First

    Brandon:

    loved the scooted reference. perfect!

that was a lot of fun.

  182. yankees62

a buddy of mine mentioned that morgan ensberg is wearing #21.. is this true?

  183. yankees62

A buddy of mine mentioned that M. Ensberg is wearing #21.. Is there truth to this?

  184. anti-pettitte

    brandon: no.

  185. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

yankees62: Yes, Ensberg is wearing 21

  186. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Brandon: I believe we are supposed to ignore the trolls.

  187. yankees62

    Rebecca -

Thank you.. Does anyone else have a problem with this?

  188. yankees62

Rebecca - thank you.. Does anyone else have a problem with this?

  189. anti-pettitte

yes, i’m a troll because you don’t agree with my opinion. we’re suppose to suck up to all the players even though they’re obviously has-beens (ex. mussina).

  190. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

it’s so hard to ignore trolls Rebecca it’s like an itch that you need to scratch, well in this case it’s spoiled milk that you wish wasn’t here

  191. YankeesBen (I'm Happy Hughes Stayed)

Yankees62 this is an old discussion, the yankees had numbers in the past that were used by other players before retiring it.

  192. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

It’s one thing to say Mussina’s washed up. Quite another to do it based on the first intrasquad spring training game.

  193. anti-pettitte

Now that pettitte cant take HGH, his back will bother him all year eventually posting these numbers: 3 wins-8 losses 6.10 era before getting released. Karma is a b*tch. thats what he gets for ratting out his best friend and ruining his life.

  194. anti-pettitte

god can’t save you this time pettitte. hehehehe

  195. DMan

I’m interested to see how Billy Traber and Edwar did today..

I feel like they might give Edwar a shot in the pen early on since he’s already experienced a bit of the majors..

And Traber has a decent track record agaisnt left handed hitters.

  196. JBRO

    Just got back from Legends…

Tabata had a good day, nice running catch in the beginning as Pete said.

Wish I got to see more of Jesus Montero…

  197. JGNYC

I think Roger Clemens is posting on the board today, and he sounds bitter…

  198. kd

Anyone know what’s going on with Scott Kazmir? Foxsports says he’s out for two weeks?

That’s a huge blow for a team that would have been better this year.

  199. mel

    anti-pettitte,

You’re not a troll because you disagree with people.

BUT, you make passive-agressive comments to others (SJ44) and you make unsubstantiated statements about players when you have no proof (Giambi on HGH this year).

I’m not calling you a troll, because for all I know you could be tall, dark, and handsome. :)

  200. yankees62

    yankeesben,

sorry tough guy, been on vacation for a few weeks… was just curious..

  201. kei igawa's sunglasses

he’s under oath, if he lied you’d be killing him for lying. tabata is the next star on the yankees position wise!

  202. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

kd: I just heard that in my poli sci class (talking baseball in political science, indeed)…shoulder stiffness, apparently?

I was talking with two guys, one a Yanks fan and the other a Sox fan. The Yanks fan and I were wishing Kazmir was healthy but the Sox fan was giddy with delight. Also, Sox fan didn’t deny Beckett’s weight gain.

  203. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    Brandon

    You must resist the urge!

  204. mel

I predict that Girardi will say everyone he’s impressed with everyone and they look good. ;)

  205. Drew

LOL..the Lowe’s ad cracked me up. Hey Mike Vaccaro, come back to the Star Ledger!!!!!

  206. Patrick

anti-pettitte is my new favorite poster

  207. JimL

Reported on ESPN-Tampa Bay left-hander Scott Kazmir will miss at least two weeks of spring training because of an elbow strain.

  208. Lori

Yes - it is Spring. Baseball and trolls. Just like the old times . . .

  209. saucY

someone who puts a fake url in just to make their name bold = troll

  210. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Dang, hope it’s not too serious for Kazmir…just when it looks like the Rays were starting to get things right…

  211. kd

    Rebecca,

Thanks for the info. I do want him to be healthy, then when the Red Sox and Rays get into their yearly plunk wars, Kazmir can grove one into Manny’s ribs like he did last year.

Beckett prolly partied too much over last year. I was talking to a Red Sox fan yesterday and reminded him just how many bad rookies started for the Yankees last year. With improved pitching and the offense, this is going to be a fun year. Optimism abound!

  212. Elizabeth

Oh, poor Kazmir. Although it’s interesting to see where the Mets are now. They have Santana and Kazmir’s injured. So goes the life of a strikeout pitcher :(

  213. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

lucky we have ladies on this blog today, I’ll resist the troll bait

  214. DANGER, WILL ROBINSON!

    TROLL ALERT
    ===========

Please do not feed the following:

    anti-pettitte

  215. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

We always have ladies on the blog :-p

  216. SJ44

Kazmir has an elbow problem. He is going to take two weeks off and see if that helps.

The Tigers got some very bad news today. Fernando Rodney has been shut down with Shoulder Tendonitis.

That depletes and already depleted bullpen. Zumaya won’t be back until mid-season at the earliest and the Tigers were looking to Rodney to replace Zumaya as the 8th inning guy.

They will score a ton of runs this year. But, their pitching staff has enormous question marks. The Rodney injury adds to it.

  217. anti-pettitte

anyone know how hard mussina was throwing today? if hes throwing below 88 forget about it. he will be crushed just like last year.

  218. Elizabeth

That’s true, we will always have ladies on the blog. Ladies who know our baseball. :)

  219. from captain clutch to derek choker

i was there and moose was throwing 84 mph. stick a fork in him.

  220. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

SJ: Whoa. First Zumaya and now Rodney? Talk about ill-fated!

Elizabeth: Dude, the guys in my poli sci class were beyond impressed I knew that Carl Pavano was our opening day starter last year.

  221. Chrissy

“A-Rod pops to first base. He is being pelted by garbage by the jeering crowd.”

    You’re terrible. :P

  222. MikeEff - Shelley at First

thanks for the news SJ. as you know everyone was crowing about the tigers great trade, but ignoring their, tenuous at best, pitching staff. i actually was shocked that they gave up andrew miller. the last thing they needed was another bat. and there is no evidence whatsoever that dontrelle will succeed in the AL.
as far as their bullpen goes…it’s almost cursed.

i was wondering if you might comment on that trade SJ

  223. Elizabeth

    Rebecca–

I was down in VA watching a Toronto/Twins game with a big Blue Jays fan and he was impressed that I knew who Alex Rios was. That boggles my mind. Give me *some* credit.

  224. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

MikeEff: I actually think the Marlins came off way better in that deal.

Elizabeth: It’s all the more power to us.

  225. tom

    zabro or captin clutch

what was the final score of the intrasquad game?

  226. mel

    MikeEff/SJ44,

You know you’re describing the Yankees of old, right? Dynamite lineup, questionable rotation, dismal bullpen? Sound familiar? lol.

  227. MikeEff - Shelley at First

rebecca i agree and was shocked that none of the “pundits” on radio print etc
didn’t talk about how the Marlins took the Tigers to the cleaners…

    Mel : :)

  228. mel

Think you’re having a bad day?

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3267428

  229. SJ44

It was a gutsy trade by Dombrowski. Definitely, a “win now” type of deal.

When you have a 130+ million dollar payroll, a 62 yr old manager, and an owner in his 70’s, they made the decision to go for it this year.

The problem is, between the Marlins and the Braves deal (for Renteria) they completely drained their farm system.

They don’t have any assets to trade to upgrade their pitching staff. Especially, their bullpen.

Right now, they are hoping Matt Mantei has a comeback year. That’s how desperate they are for bullpen arms.

They will score a ton of runs. I think their offense will be the best in the AL. However, aside from Verlander, I don’t like their pitching at all.

Kenny Rogers, Dontrelle, Bonderman, Nate Robertson, not exactly a scary rotation.

Add to it their bullpen issues and I think its going to be interesting to see how it all shakes out for them this year.

  230. MikeEff - Shelley at First

    oh that poor spezio…what a mess….
i thought he went to rehab. i guess it didn’t do a lot of good.

  231. baseball expert

according to my calculations, dontrelle, verlander, rogers, bonderman, and robertson are all going to the DL this year.

  232. MikeEff - Shelley at First

Thanks SJ. good point about an old owner wanting a win now. makes a lot of sense.
not that i agree with it either. definitely a Yankee 2004-2007 bash a lot of runs strategy.

  233. Doreen

    That was fun, Pete. Thanks.

  234. Patrick

SJ (and everyone else), if you had to make a prediction now for AL Central division winner who would it be?

I’d go with the Indians, their pitching is far better and the lineup is extremely dangerous (especially if Hafner bounces back).

  235. Y's Guy

i see spezio is enjoying the last $4.5M he’ll ever get from an mlb team. can u belive he’s making that kind of jack?

  236. S.o.S.27

anti everything-I am probably one of the biggest moose haters on this blog. But to write him off from watching a picnic game is a bit pre mature. I do agree if he doesnt throw in the high 80’s(at the very least)hes in trouble. But they are still building arm strength and working on thing right now. So give it a break for now.

    Sj,
The Tigers are going to have to outscore teams 10-9 the whole year. Rodney had his struggles last year with Zumaya being out. I still think its Clevelands division to lose.
The a.l. seems more obtainable this year with all these top teams having pitchers out for awhile. I would think our key to our success will be the pen but IMO the #5 starter holding the fort dowm till Joba takes over. Whether its Moose or maybe Karstens which i like.

  237. S.o.S.27

We need to have a spring training game where the Scranton and Trenton All Stars are on one team vs. The Yankees. Who would pay to watch that?

  238. Patrick

I’d watch it, sounds like fun.

Better question, who would be on the Scranton and Trenton all star team?

  239. S.o.S.27

    Patrick,
    Miranda
    Ajax
    Tabata
    Horne
    Igawa
    Mcutchen
    Maloncan
    Any of the stud catchers
    Help me out here.

  240. Marc W

This live blog is sponsored by Lowe’s. Let’s build something together!

dead on the YES Network would sooooo do that

  241. karyn

    Thanks Pete.
Loved the play by play. LOL.

  242. Vic

“This live blog is sponsored by Lowe’s. Let’s build something together!”

    HAHAHAHAHAHAAHHA

    good one Pete!

  243. Miggs

I’m getting the feeling that Anti-Pettitte is McLovin posting under another name. I actually find humor in a lot of his posts.

Now someone like NYPD113, THAT guy is a waste of time, a troll in the worst sense.
