Here’s the manager discussing his lineup for tomorrow, plans for Mo and a few other topics:
Legends Field is a ghost town at this point and I’m taking the rest of the afternoon off. Check tomorrow for the Phil Hughes Q&A, live blogging of the USF game and whatever else we come up with.
UPDATE: Seems there was a problem with the audio before. Damn it, Jim, I’m a reporter not a technician. But it’s fixed now.
mel,
Obviously you didnt come into spring blog camp in shape. How do you expect to be able to handle the blog come the start of the season? This is a new Yankee regime and we have to be just as prepared as the players. Suck it up. You will thank Pete for taking a page from Girardi soon enough.
LOHUD BLOGGERS THE BEST CONDITIONS BLOGGERS OF 08!!
Roger has such a huge ego that he has to prade around Astros camp like nothing is going on. I don’t know why the ’stros owner doesn’t tell him to get lost.
He means that he has a lot of good friends in politics, and that there is nothing that 100% proves he juiced up, so he’s going to continue to be as arrogant as his lawyer.
Really, you would think at this point, Roger would realize he needs the media behind him now more than ever, but now that they’re writing things about him that he doesn’t like, he’ll treat them like scum.
In less than 6 months Roger went from being a white knight to the white Barry Bonds. Heard some media guy talking about how Clemens is affecting camp. The players love it as expected. But I was to hear that the people of Houston have turned on him. Apparently, it started when he chose to return to the Yankees last year, and this fiasco is a chance for them to pile on.
Tejada’s just blending into the woodwork like he always does. Watch the people of Houston embrace him to spite Roger. BTW Tejada’s lost weight. You can’t really tell in the body, but his face is slimmer.
Again… not ONE person mentioning the absense of matsui in either yesterdays lineup or tomorrows… i know theyre taking it slow but cant SOMEONE ask a question about it? People are making it sound like they dont even know hes on the squad anymore… I just find it a little fishy.
Matt Ryan, Glenn Dorsey or somebody else as the first overall pick in the Nfl draft. Some picked somebody else nflmockdraft.wordpress.com. I’d love to hear your comments.
The one Pete sent out warning us to come to ST in shape.
Too close to call on the game. Kidd’s got a good rhythm going running the team (but not scoring), but he’ll see a lot of the backsides of TP & Manu (who shouldn’t win 6th man esp. this year with as many starts as he’s had).
mel I saw a picture of some idiots surrounding him wearing no hgh in this rocket fuel. I wonder how much he paid them.
Also I never understood why ’stros fans were at both Andy and Roger for returning home. I was upset when Andy left us in 2004, I was angry at the Yankees for letting it happen. It was Roger I was more at since he went thru this whole song an dance that he was retiring and than he came back.
NJ made out great on the trade. I hope that Harris continues to develop and reach his potential. Sometimes it’s difficult to grow under a dysfunctional owner like Mark Cuban who is always hovering over team. I mean, literally, like in the huddle. Dirk had to tell him to back off.
There aren’t many big men in the L, so Diop will be very handy. What happened with Magloire? He couldn’t get PT with NJ and now he’s with the Mavs? Huh?
Brandon,
Here iv been a supporter of your Nets since the trade happened. But you choose to pick against my Spurs tonight. Whats wrong with this picture.
SPURS=Rodney Dangerfield of Basketball. Even with 4 titles in 9 years.
SoS don’t get me wrong playoff series no chance in hell SAS loses to Dallas but this is a season game which Kidd will be highly motivated, the Spurs haven’t looked like thereselves this season evidence how the Knicks nearly beat them. I see Mags having a good game too, but it’s all smoke screen
Kiki would never go to a situation in which he doesn’t have control, meaning if he doesn’t want Isiah and Dolan saids tough Kiki wouldn’t take that crap. He didn’t take it in Denver and he sure as hell won’t in NY.
Kiki would never go to a situation in which he doesn’t have control, meaning if he doesn’t want Isiah and Dolan saids tough Kiki wouldn’t take that crap. He didn’t take it in Denver and he sure as hell won’t in NY.
Well I did read that the Mets got in trouble for only bringing on regular to yesterdays game, and that regular was Ryan Church (probably won’t even be a regular this year). You are supposed to bring 4. I think Joe just wants to get their feet wet, you won’t see full lineups making all trips. Plus I would assume that they don’t have to travel far.
Also interesting that they will use wood bats, the kids should kill them than.
I don’t see this happening at all my bet is Thorn is retiring and Kiki was signed to get NJ into reasonable cap figure to get Lebron James when he hits FA
brandon; i realize that the nba no longer has enough fans to support a decent blog. this is well deserved. you should maybe take that as a sign that the vast majority of people on this blog couldnt give a crap about the nba
i dont mean to say that nobody should drop a note about the nba occasionally but this whole thread is one person’s analysis of the nba without any mention of baseball or the yankees. and again, its just my opinion.
Brandon…Pavano’s not going to the Marlins. That article is a reporter speculating that he wouldn’t be too shocked to see Pavano come back to the Marlins on an incentive-laden deal AFTER his current contract is up. It’s not even based on a quote from Pavano or anything like that. It’s just speculation. About what he might do after his Yankee deal is over.
“without any mention of baseball or the yankees. and again, its just my opinion.”
Well…it’s not like there’s much news to discuss. Matsui’s not in the lineup yet because they’re taking it slow, everything else is going along pretty much as they expect…no news is good news.
“I was gonna put a question mark but I forgot to, I’m still in ST mode”
My point still remains…putting that leads one to believe that there are at LEAST rumors of interest on the part of the Marlins, maybe even whispers of a trade, should he come back healthy.
News outlets generate misleading headlines enough…we don’t need to start doing it FOR them.
as a jersey native, i’m kinda sad to see the team go. i’ll still root for them though. games will be harder to attend, but most likely a good move on the team’s part. it seems like people from NYC wouldn’t want to associate with a team from jersey (football aside )
I apologize for highjacking the thread with NBA talk, but I’m as giddy as a schoolgirl as they say.
Baseball. Hmmm.
*Boston putting the hurt on the JV team.
*I’m still psyched about the season and the young pitching.
*I still think Cashman’s a good GM even though he has his detractors here.
*I saw some improvement in Hank’s last comments. No foot in mouth on that occasion.
*I’m glad that Girardi’s making efforts to bring the black sheep into the fold.
ok ill throw out what i think they should do with joba and why and you can all tell me why im a moron and call my manhood into question:
start joba in exteded ST. Keep him there till mid-May. Bring him up the last week of May into the Yanks bullpen and only pitch him 20 innings in june. on july 6th, start him vs. Boston and keep him in the rotation for the rest of the season and the PS.
25 innings in may/june + 16 starts x 7innings = 137 innings. leaving approx 20 innings for the PS.
i’ve wondered that myself, rodg12. i haven’t heard anything about it, but i’m guessing no. i had a friend who worked for the company that handled the nets marketing and said they were trying to use “new jersey” as little as possible.
You got my head spinning with your calculations, but I don’t think you need to be so conservative.
IDK if this was a Torre thing or a baseball thing, but they didn’t factor the post season into IP limits when they brought up IPK. In other words it’s gravy or insignificant or whatever(ed).
Y’s Guy - So he doesn’t pitch for a month? I don’t like that idea. I’d rather he starts the year in the bullpen, pitches there the entire first half, that transitions to a starter in the second half. He should be able to stay well within his innings limits this way and provide value for the big club all year.
let me ask a question here - apart from this blog, or your very own, what is everybody’s favorite blog for yankees news, gossip, sarcasm, commentary, etc?
Red Sox Nation?” Hank says. “What a bunch of [expletive] that is. That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans. FBI starts Clemens probe
Associated Press
WASHINGTON — The FBI has opened an investigation into whether baseball great Roger Clemens lied to Congress when he denied taking steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs.
Law enforcement officials say the inquiry will focus on whether Clemens or his former personal trainer Brian McNamee lied when they testified under oath about the use of steroids.
In testimony Feb 13 , Clemens told Congress he never used either drug. McNamee testified that he injected the seven-time Cy Young Award winner with steroids and human growth hormone at least 16 times from 1998 to 2001.
The FBI inquiry was prompted by a request Thursday from the House Oversight Committee, which singled out statements by Clemens as possibly false.
my thinking is having joba in the rotation from the all-star break on, and one start in each playoff round makes them a much stronger team. you just treat it as if he hurt his non throwing thumb or some sort of 6-8 week injury and then there’re no more joba rules, just starting every 5th day. he is rated by most scouts as a top of the rotation pitcher. every inning he pitches out of the pen is one less inning he’s in the rotation.
Y’s guy I disagree. Firstly, why put him in extended spring training AND the bullpen? If he pitches the first 3 months in the bullpen then transitions to starter in late june/early july he will be at around 140 innings or a bit more by october. Relievers don’t throw 20 innings a month, what reliever do you know threw 120 innings last year?
“let me ask a question here - apart from this blog, or your very own, what is everybody’s favorite blog for yankees news, gossip, sarcasm, commentary, etc?”
I usually go to Pride of the Yankees for all Yankee news items of the day. They usually update frequently as well if any breaking news happens during the day.
For general baseball news and analysis I like David Pinto’s Baseball Musings website.
When I come across someone with a “B” cap in the crosswalk, I want to run over them with my car. Road Rage. When I see a Yankee hat, t-shirt, car sticker, or plate frame it brings a smile to my face. Serenity.
the problem with using joba in the BP then switching is that it leaves him with only about 8 RS starts.
his limit is very likey 142 IP.
since the plan is to finish with him starting (and we assums starting in the PS) you have to save 20 IP for the PS (1 start each round)
that leaves 122 innings. To transition (stretch him out) from months in the BP to the rotation will take a min or 15 innings.
that leaves 107 innings. if he pitches 12 innnigs/mo until end of july that’s 48 innings, and leaves 59 which is 8 starts in aug/sept.
I’d rather see him in the rotation for half the season myself.
If you put Joba in the bullpen for the first 3 months you can limit him to ~45 innings over that period. That leaves about 100 innings over 15 starts for the rest of the season which comes out to 6 2/3 innings per start (which is much more realistic than 7 ip/start). I highly doubt yankees management will anticpate making the world series when they schedule Joba’s workload so I can see them planning to get him 145 innings in the regular season alone. If they are fortunate enough to get to the world series I don’t see a problem with stretching him from 145 to 160-165. On the other hand if they have the division locked up early then I can see them skipping Joba towards the end to give him a little breathing room on his innings limit.
patrick, i think its clear they wont go past 150 at the max. Also, even if you’re not planning to make the WS, you might want to have him for 1 start plus 2 relief innings per round.
also you didnt account for stretching him out, it doesnt matter whether thats in the majors or minors the innings count.
Even if you only figured 14 innings for the PS, AND figured 6 2/3 per start, thats only makes 11 starts max

well, since you asked nicely, i’ll be here.
Pete you’re really making us keep up with you. Have a great day.
I have a problem with the audio, is it just me are is somethink wrong???
I am having a problem with the audio as well
It cuts out about 50 seconds in for me.
Pete, my side is killing me. You’re like Girardi, making us run like this.
Speaking of ghosts, there’s dead air in your audio. No sound for me from the 50 sec. mark.
“I have a problem with the audio, is it just me are is somethink wrong???”
For me, it goes silent after 50 sec.

What the heck does that mean?
who knows
Whos worse at retiring? Clemens or Farve? I cant decide. They both drag it on forever.
Roger has such a huge ego that he has to prade around Astros camp like nothing is going on. I don’t know why the ’stros owner doesn’t tell him to get lost.
Pavano to the Marlins
jennifer,
It means he’s going to eat their lunch!

Sorry. Meant conditioned. Man, im not even in condition to spell conditioned right. Time to run through the blog some more.
mel-Yes, I chose to ignore the letter. Too busy watching the NBA.
What are you talking about?
Good game tonight,Spurs play Mavs on tnt. Who wins?

jennifer,
I’m glad you were able to deal with your *issues* lol.
Andy may have been raised in Texas, but he’s a Bronx boy for sure.
Roger’s become a caricature of himself. So sad, but totally self-inflicted. He really exacerbated the problem by exposing and attacking McNamee.
I’m so disappointed how Kidd ended his stay in NJ, w/ that said Mavs should beat the Spurs tonight.
BTW Devin Harris makes his Nets debut tonight
Anybody know why the yankees are sending their whole lineup to play against south florida and 5 full innings
Brandon,
NJ made out great on the trade. I hope that Harris continues to develop and reach his potential. Sometimes it’s difficult to grow under a dysfunctional owner like Mark Cuban who is always hovering over team. I mean, literally, like in the huddle. Dirk had to tell him to back off.

Jack,
I think it’s on Pete’s audio. Unfortunately, it’s after the 50 sec. mark.
Full lineup? Just picking up where Torre left off. j/k. Makes sense, though. Serves notice.
The length? Probably continuing the “vets will not skate through ST” theme.
they’re not my Nets :(…Rebecca is a true Nets fan
me I’m looking to adopt the Nets because as soon as they reach BK or Jay-Z gets Lebron this longtime Knicks fan has been beaten and battered enough.
What kind of bats will they be using for the exhibition vs USF? Will the Yanks use wood while USF uses metal bats?
Does anyone know. Just curious.
Jack
University of South Florida is in Tampa.
mel MAgloire had Kwame Brown syndrome Kidd would throw him perfect passes he’d fumble it, and then we found out he’s scared of heights
Steve
College kids will use wooden bats.
SoS,
Uhh…Rodney Dangerfield is dead. Your Spurs are dead? j/k
Brandon,
What do you think about Kiki as possible GM? I think it’s great, even if it’s just is to fire the coach. Cuz the current GM refuses to fire Isiah.
SoS don’t get me wrong playoff series no chance in hell SAS loses to Dallas but this is a season game which Kidd will be highly motivated, the Spurs haven’t looked like thereselves this season evidence how the Knicks nearly beat them. I see Mags having a good game too, but it’s all smoke screen
does the university of south florida not have any state maps?
Kiki would never go to a situation in which he doesn’t have control, meaning if he doesn’t want Isiah and Dolan saids tough Kiki wouldn’t take that crap. He didn’t take it in Denver and he sure as hell won’t in NY.

Is it possible to get a Who Cares! answer on the Clemens poll?
Girardi just wants to test all the players. Better do it now than wait till the end of ST.
Huh! Who knew that real games were being played.
Maine got mangled in the 2nd.
Litsch got lit up.
Beckett was bootyful. 2 perfect innings. 4 K’s.
Nats swatting Georgetown 14-0.
We now return you to your regular programming.
Pete/Mel Thanks! I’ve been wondering about that all day.
JMO
in this blog we speak watever the ….. we want if you don’t like it I can direct you to Carl Pavano’s blog
Meant Jennifer
I had the same audio problems as everyone else. Cuts out at about the 50 second mark.
They still play basketball in NY? I thought the NIT was in March?

As long as the Pete doesn’t care…let it go on
Hopefully Devin Harris does well (or shows promise) tonight. I accept it, but trading away Kidd still hurts.
Well, since we’re not supposed to talk NBA here, I’ll ask a baseball question.
How do you New Yorkers feel about the Nets moving to Brooklyn and who will you cheer for?
mel if they move to BK expect a chain of fans switching their team

How do you New Yorkers feel about the Nets moving to Brooklyn and who will you cheer for?
I don’t care, I haven’t rooted for the Net’s since Rick Barry, then Dr. J left.
But I learned that Brooklyn is now called the BK.
I’m sorry, but out in real America, BK is Burger King.
wow JMO that hit me hard, nice shot
so who wants to talk hockey too

JMO, there are definitely more than 2 people on this board who talk basketball. I’ve talked it with Brandon and mel on multiple occasions.

Where in the world is Betemit? Nice article. Take notice of the weight loss:

the problem with using joba in the BP then switching is that it leaves him with only about 8 RS starts.
his limit is very likey 142 IP.
since the plan is to finish with him starting (and we assums starting in the PS) you have to save 20 IP for the PS (1 start each round)
that leaves 122 innings.
Here’s an article about Joba, Hughes, and IPK at SI.com:

I’m so bored and longing for baseball that I’m watching the Rockies and D-backs on mlb.tv

I am getting teary eyed. When you go to sleep tonight say a little prayer for Bobby.
mel-
You come with some funny stuff!
that’s tough news about bobby murcer.
Y’s guy -
If you put Joba in the bullpen for the first 3 months you can limit him to ~45 innings over that period.
