Peter Abraham
February

Here is how the Yankees will line up their pitching for tomorrow’s game against South Florida:

Joba Chamberlain (2 innings)
Ian Kennedy (2 innings)
Phil Hughes (1 inning)
Kei Igawa (1 inning)
Jefff Marquez (1 inning)
Alan Horne (1 inning)
Chase Wright (1 inning)

Hughes has one inning because he’ll be starting on Tuesday.

except for hughes (already #4 starter) and Karstens/Rasner (battling for long relief job), is that starters #5-10?

  2. saucY

    baseball :D

  3. Patrick

People keep talking about the “long relief job” but I don’t see that there is such a thing available. If Joba comes out of spring training as a starter then mussina will be in the bullpen. If that happens whats the point of having karstens or rasner? On the other hand if Joba is in the bullpen to start the season your bullpen will look like:
Mariano, Farns, Hawkins, Joba, , ,

There are so many guys competing for those last three spots, do you really want to waste one on Karstens or Rasner? Just how the yankees say they don’t want to take a lefty just to have a lefty, I don’t think they should take a long reliever just to have a long reliever. However, if you want to say Karstens or Rasner are guaranteed a long relief spot you have to include Igawa in that competition.

  4. ian

Anyone know the rotation for spring?

  5. rbizzler

What an awful way to line up the pitchers for that game against overmatched college guys. We now have Clueless Joe part II! Kidding people, kidding.

But, I can’t wait for people to complain about this somehow.

  6. wood is good

Why o why isn’t this on TV?!?!?

Seeing this pitching lineup gave me my first real “baseball is coming!” shivver. Goosebumps….

    wood is good:
Unfortunately intrasquad games aren’t on TV because networks can’t get ad revenue for games like this. Whenever you see a game on TV, the network pays the league and/or team a fee to broadcast the game. The network sells advertising time to cover that broadcasting fee. If the fee is greater than the ad revenue, the network won’t broadcast the game.

Also with YES its difficult to fit those games into the schedule. The network is contractually obligated to repeat Nets games from the night before in the morning, and then Mike & the Mad Dog is on all afternoon. They’ve also got other shows that are part of their programming schedule. So there’s not a priority to fit meaningless games into the broadcasting day.

  10. JBRO

Probably was asked a bunch of times but, Is this game on MLBtv?

  11. Yankees Mobile

This game should be an easy one for the yankees but the last 2 innings don’t sound too great.

  12. TurnTwo

Patrick, Moose is not pitching in the pen to start the season… Girardi already said he’s in the rotation, and that he favors a long man to be available in the pen.

  13. DMan

To me, it seems like Girardi has decided to take the 3 best BP pitchers to fill the remaining 3 spots..

I think he’s said that he won’t nessacarly take a lefty specialist unless someone really steps up..

I’m not sure if the same would go for a long man.. But maybe..

  14. Jay

Why did they have to include Igawa and ugly up that rotation? Take Mr. Sensitive Eyes out of it and you have the top four young pitchers in the system and two decent ones. A prospect-fan’s dream come true.

  15. Bronx Cheer

I think Abraham reported it in his article today.

Wang, Pettitte, Moose, Hughes, Kennedy (w/ Joba pitching piggyback with Kennedy early in the spring).

  16. rodg12

    Pete:
Which position players are playing in the game? Most/All of the regulars?

  17. joe

will tomorrows game be televised ?

  18. Josh

joba, phil and ian ni the same game.. i CANNOT BELIEVE I CANT SEE IT :( :(

does anyone have the YES television schedule for the spring?

  19. saucY

    it will be blogevised

  20. CountryClub

Horne was the EL pitcher of the year last year and will most likely pitch for the big club at some point this year (probably out of the pen).

  21. Glenn

A long reliever makes sense to take the strain off the bullpen in using a series of short relievers when those days happen (and they do) of a starter having a bad outing early in the game. The days of bullpen burnout are over with.
A long reliever can also be used as a spot starter.

  22. mel

    saucY,

    Happy Hour?

Congrats to Rutgers’ Vivian Stringer for joining the 800 Win Club.

I hope that Don Imus sends his congrats.

  23. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

I am very curious to see how Jefff Marquez & Alan Horne do.

Pete please make sure to watch them pitch. :D

  24. DMan

Well if they do go for a long man, I think Karstens has the best shot at that spot.

  25. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex")

Isiah sends Vivian Stringer his congrats :D

  26. mel

    Glenn,

I agree. This year, more than ever, we need someone reliable because of the funky rotations.

Joba to be on schedule to pitch the same days as Ian. I though Ian had the most IP? Mussina is lined up as the #3 right now, but if he’s not hitting the high 80’s, I’d like to see Hughes go in that spot.

  27. playballnyy

thank god they are putting igawa in there. we’ll need him to stop the bleeding.

  29. saucY

mel: we need to make happy hour every hour ;)

and congrats to c vivian! always liked her.

  30. Y's Guy

yankees mobile, you cant bee too big a fan if you don’t want to see alan horne pitch. He had the best season in the organization after joba and ian last season. He will pitch for the yanks this season barring injury. maybe pitch alot of innings before its over.

  31. Andrea

    Josh: Spring Training TV schedule:

    http://joblogchamberlain.blogs.....on-tv.html

  32. Andrea

Whoops! Didn’t notice someone already posted it!

  33. Elizabeth

If Joba comes out of spring training as a starter then mussina will be in the bullpen.

That seems to contradict everything else we’ve been told. Most likely, IPK would be sent to the bullpen or, more likely, AAA

  34. Josh

    thansk for the schedules guys

  35. Travis G.

and i was going to ask why is Hughes going just one? you know your readers Pete.

  36. NJ in Tampa

Obviously I’m looking forward to the big 3 but I’m really excited to see Horne. I think this kid is going to be very, very good for us. I’ll be at the game tomorrow :)
