Today in training camp

Plenty o’ good blog fun yesterday with the intrasquad game. Such will not be the case today.

The Yankees have a 100-minute workout scheduled. Joe Girardi told us yesterday that the boys will be on the field at 9:30 and off at 11:10. With the exhibition schedule starting tomorrow, it’s customary to take it easy the day before.

The plan for most everybody, including the writers, is to get an entire afternoon away from Legends Field.

But we’ll pop up a few posts today and perhaps do a brief Q&A with somebody.

Hang in there Pete, the warm weather will be back tomorrow.

Really enjoyed the live blogging of the intra-squad game. Thanks.

Remember last year Pete said that a Legends Field security guy yelled at Cash’s parents.

I wonder if this is the guy. Scroll down to the videos there is a guy on a segway.

Lucky for Osama bin Laden that he never did HGH or steroids because if he had he would have been found and hauled before Congress by now.

  6. long time February 28th, 2008 at 8:56 am

    Roy Hobbs

Great line that’s the best that i’ve regarding the HGH and steroids. Now let’s start talking baseball. What a surprise Steve Philips on Mike and Mike this Morn has Yanks missing the playoffs

  7. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge February 28th, 2008 at 9:01 am

I’ll say one last thing (well maybe not) How come Steve Phillips gets off scott free when he has a drug dealer working in his clubhouse? I cannot stand Steve Phillips, he stunk as a gm and he talks about the problems other teams have? IF that isn’t a joke I don’t know what is.

  8. Fran February 28th, 2008 at 9:06 am

Steve Phillips not picking the Yankees to make the playoffs is good news. He is never right!!

  9. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge February 28th, 2008 at 9:06 am

And another thing, for being the largest media market in the country (or one of the largest). We have pretty crappy morning sports programs. The two down the dial of insufferable, and the one who wishes he played sports is a sexist pig.

  10. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge February 28th, 2008 at 9:08 am

Fran very true. I actually like the ‘underdog’ status the Yankees have right now. Let them underestimate them.

  11. TurnTwo February 28th, 2008 at 9:09 am

i really think they keep him around because he agrees to play the role of the fool for ESPN as the ‘resident GM’…

remember, these guys are mainly paid to provide sports entertainment, garner attention for the network, and spark discussion amongst the fans to keep you coming back…. what better way to do that then to get the masses of Yankees fans in an uproar, AGAIN, over saying they wont make the playoffs, AGAIN…. they say it every year, and they figure at some point, they have to be right.

and not to back him or anything, but noone in the front office of any organization who was involved with the Mitchell Report has really been raked across the coals as of yet…

  12. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge February 28th, 2008 at 9:11 am

I know, but do you see any other gm commenting non stop on the issue? I guess that would be more my point. All this garbage was going on under his watch yet he has the nerve to talk about Clemens, Pettitte et al.

  13. Fran February 28th, 2008 at 9:13 am

Jennifer – I’m with you. I kind of like the underdog status for a change. Then the Yankees can “surprise” all of the “experts”.

  14. TurnTwo February 28th, 2008 at 9:15 am

jennifer, completely agree. how is it, with what, like 9 major sports franchises in the most populated city in America, and all we have to listen to is Mike and Mike and Carton and Boomer? seriously, we cant do any better than that?

  15. TurnTwo February 28th, 2008 at 9:16 am

ah, yeah, thats a fair point, jennifer.

  16. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 February 28th, 2008 at 9:21 am

Good thing there’s nothing going on today, I’ve got three classes to get through =D

And why the heck is it -6 outside? Makes the weather in Tampa suitable for shorts and a t-shirt. Pete, I have no pity. :-P

  17. Yanksrule57 February 28th, 2008 at 9:25 am

    Jennifer,

I asked my wife one day (she knows almost nothing about baseball)to look at Phillips on the TV. I aksed her to listen to him and tell me why she thought he was on there. She said he has blue eyes that are great for tv. There is your answer.
He is consistently wrong and has an extreme bias against the Yanks. Other than that I have nothing against him. Ha! 8)

  18. just my opinion February 28th, 2008 at 9:29 am

i see that the soon-to-be Miami Marlins have lined up at the taxpayer trough for half-billion dollar gift from the citizens of dade county, florida and of course the u.s., and we’re waiting for the other half billion dollar shoe to drop in tampa this year.

but it seems there is no outrage from baseball fans about congress wasting taxpayers money on STADIUMS when there is a war to fight.

  19. Ted February 28th, 2008 at 9:39 am

    Great post, Pete.

  20. DMan February 28th, 2008 at 9:43 am

    Roy Hobbs-

    Great line you had earlier!

I realyl should be working harder today..

  21. Y's Guy February 28th, 2008 at 9:50 am

here’s an idea, the yankees could build a 40,000 seat stadium in tampa and sell it out for ST and then lease it to the Rays for the summer. That way the Rays can just hand back the Yanks revenue sharing check for rent. and all the good citizens dont have to reach into thier pockets again.

  22. Roy Hobbs February 28th, 2008 at 10:10 am

Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while, but then they’re smarter than Steve Phillips.

  23. Doreen February 28th, 2008 at 10:22 am

    YanksRule57

I am laughing at what your wife said about Steve Philips, because I said the same thing to my husband not too long ago!

  24. Southern Yankee February 28th, 2008 at 10:39 am

    My wife likes his hair.

  25. Yanksrule57 February 28th, 2008 at 10:52 am

    Doreen,

    Too funny!
Really, someone that dumb has to be getting by on looks alone.

  26. MarkCNY February 28th, 2008 at 12:03 pm

Hey, good news. We’re well underway with ST and NO HAMMIES pulled. When this club gets outta Tampa healthy and intact, we’re gonna start the season off right and not have to play catch up like last year, although that was a great comeback to make the playoffs! (tip o’ the cap to the team and Mr. Torre).
Not having to play catch up keeps things on more of an even keel for player utilization.

Jennifer – enjoying the snow in Syracuse as much as I am? I took my first ‘header’ of the year Tuesday on Madison Street. Landed more on my side than my arse, so I avoided the whiplash effect for the most part. Had to LOL at myself after the dust off and confirming all the pieces parts were still working. : )
