Notes: Consolmagno is from Staten Island. Must be a thrill for him to play against the Yankees. … Sanford is USF’s closer. He has six strikeouts in 4.1 innings this season. … The Yankees last played the Bulls in 1982.
I’m headed down to the field to watch BP. The game is at 1:15 and I’ll live blog as many innings as I can.
UPDATE, 1:03 p.m.: The Yankees have Army paratroopers landing on the field. They always put on a show here.
UPDATE, 1:12 p.m.: They’re introducing all the assorted Yankees coaches and instructors. Yogi Berra received the biggest cheer.
UPDATE, 1:18 p.m.: They actually had a flyover after the National Anthem. Only the Yankees. Joe Girardi is at the plate with the lineup card. Baseball is imminent.
UPDATE, 1:21 p.m.: Goose Gossage threw out the first pitch. Joba motioned him to the rubber and he threw a strike to Posada. He still throws hard.
TOP OF THE FIRST
The USF kids are using wooden bats in case you were wondering. The Yankees don’t want anybody getting hurt.
Joba vs. Consolmagno: 2-1 pitch, fly ball to right.
Joba vs. Lockwood: First pitch, grounder to second.
Joba vs. Marusak: 0-2 pitch, popped to Damon behind shortstop. 8 pitches/6 strikes.
BOTTOM OF THE FIRST
Damon: 1-1 pitch, lines to right.
Jeter: Hit by a pitch.
Abreu: Single to right. Jeter to third.
Rodriguez: Sac fly to right, 1-0 Yankees.
Giambi: Fly to center.
END OF THE FIRST, 1-0 Yankees
Joba vs. Hobbs: Strikeout on three pitches.
Joba vs. Manz: Popped to third on a 2-2 pitch.
Joba vs. Rey: Struck out swinging on a full-count slider.
MIDDLE OF THE SECOND
Now pitching for USF: Zach Pietrzyk, a freshman right-hander.
Posada: Doubles to right.
Cano: Grounds to shortstop, Posada to third.
Duncan: Walks.
Cabrera: Sac fly to right, Posada scores sliding on. 2-0 Yankees.
Damon: Walks. Duncan to second.
Jeter: Groundball to left side … through into left field for a base hit! Duncan rounds third and will score and the Yankees lead 3-0.
Abreu: Here’s Bobby Abreu, the 18th batter of the game. This pointless statistic brought to you by the 18th Street Bar and Grill.
Abreu walks to load the bases for A-Rod.
Rodriguez: Base hit to left, two runs score. 5-0 Yankees.
Giambi: Fliees to center to end the inning. Four runs on three hits and no errors. Two left on.
TOP OF THE THIRD
Now pitching for the Yankees: Ian Patrick Kennedy
The line for Joba: 2 0 0 0 0 2 — 22 pitches/15 strikes.
IPK vs. Cleveland: Line drive to first on the first pitch. The Big G snaps it up.
IPK vs. Angelberger: Struck out swinging on a 3-2 pitch. The first base umpire punched him out on the swing. The perfect game lives.
IPK vs. Koscso: Grounds to third on a 2-1 pitch.
MIDDLE OF THE THIRD
Now pitching for USF: Redshirt freshman Matt Stull
Posada: Flies to center.
Cano: Single to left.
Duncan: Flies to left.
Cabrera: Infield single to shortstop. Cano to second.
Damon: Lines to left to end the inning. End of three: 5-0 Yankees.
This live blog brought to you by Benihana. Hideki Matsui may be rehabbing his knee but you don’t have to rehab your appetite. Check out your area Benihana Steakhouse.
TOP OF THE FOURTH
IPK vs. Consolmagno: Base hit to center for the kid from Staten Island. Good for him. The perfect game is broken up. The crowd gave him a big cheer.
IPK vs, Lockwood: Grounder to second on a 3-1 pitch. Consolmagno to second. Kennedy is struggling with his control and Posada just visited the mound.
IPK vs. Maruszac: Grounder to third.
IPK vs. Hobbs: Struck out swinging on a 1-2 pitch.
MIDDLE OF THE FOURTH
Stull still pitching
Jeter: Grounds to shortstop.
Abreu: Draws a walk.
Rodriguez: Draws a walk.
Giambi: Grounds to first, A-Rod out at second. Abreu to third.
Posada: Two-run triple to right.
Cano: E-6. Posada scores. 8-0 Yankees. Cano goes to second somehow, I had to take a call and missed it.
Duncan: Single up the middle. Cano scores from second. 9-0 Yankees.
Cabrera: Single to right. Duncan to second.
Damon: Infield single to load the bases.
Alberto Gonzalez hitting for Jeter: Grounds to second to end the inning. 9-0 Yankees.
TOP OF THE FIFTH
Phil Hughes now pitching
Hughes vs. Manz: Strikeout on four pitches.
Hughes vs. Rey: Strikeout on four pitches.
Hughes vs. Cleveland: Diving catch in right by Colin Curtis.
Massive changes for the Yankees. Posada stayed in to catch Hughes and Duncan is the DH. Everybody else is out. New players: Justin Christian (LF), Alberto Gonzalez (SS), Colin Curtis (RF), Cody Ransom (3B), Morgan Ensberg (1B), Nick Green (2B), Austin Jackson (CF).
MIDDLE OF THE FIFTH
I’ll have to head down to the clubhouse soon. But I’ll update this until then
Colin Curtis: Double to the gap in right. Nice day for him so far.
Ransom: Grounded to second, moving Curtis over.
Ensberg: Popped to short. Bad piece of hitting there with a runner on third.
Jorge Posada: Popped to left. 9-0 Yankees after 5.
TOP OF THE SIXTH
Kei Igawa and his sunglasses pitching for the Yankees. Austin Romine is catching him.
Angleberger: Fly to right. USF still has had only one man get on base.
Koscso: Walks on five pitches. Only Igawa could walk the No. 9 hitter on a college team with a 9-0 lead. What were the Yankees thinking when they signed this guy?
Wild pitch moves the runner to second.
Consolmagno: Draws a walk.
The clubhouse is open. I have to run. Thanks for reading. Back later with some notes and audio.

Ticketmaster sucks
I hate ticketmaster
Dude, part of me wishes I was on the South Florida team, but seeing that Yankees line up, part of me…doesn’t.
Bryan: agreed.
How’d you like to go from facing Joba’s heater to Kennedy’s pin-point control on off-speed/fastball combo. Man, that would suck.
Hey, I might have missed a link to the game earlier, but is there a way to catch it on radio?
rebecca i looked on wcbs 880 website. doesn’t look like they will be broadcasting the game today
Rebecca:
Last thread, third post
Joba slated for 2 innings work today?
PS – If he gives up a couple runs his first exhibition outing it’s no big deal. So, if you tend to post irate comments questioning talent, management, coaching, preparation, and existence in general when a prospect goes to a 3-1 count for the first time, try not to comment until spring training is over.
rodg12: Danke danke
thanks rodg12
Ticket master is a ripoff!! $8.00 in fees for one ticket!! I paid almost $40 for a tier reserved ticket!!
Jennifer – don’t complain, that’s the CONVENIENCE fee you’re paying! lol.. at least you found tickets.
A $5 Fujifilm game tickets costs $13.65 with TM charges.
it’s a crime that the ticketmaster monopoly is allowed to commit highway robbery the way they do
I wonder if the college radio station will broadcast the game online….
Their closer is starting the game? Must be showcasing him for the league. There’s no way he gets in the game otherwise.
Their closer might be just a little stoked.
Please help!
When I try to reserve fujifilm and ConEd games online, the full price shows up. What am I doing wrong? Should I buy at the quoted price and expect the refund?
How did you guys get the fuji film tickets to be $5?? they are comming up at $14 for me w/o the charges?? helpp
I know we like to complain about TM, but which is worse: The overpriced service charges or a using a different ticket service that crashes every 2 minutes because they don’t have servers like TM’s?
I honestly don’t know. I guess I’d rather go in knowing I’ll get screwed on service charges instead of watching someone else’s server go down at 10:01.
Bryan it’s not Ticketmaster..its the Yankees with all the ticket plans and premium lotteries and all the other bs that hardly leaves any tix for the general sale.
Ticket master must be in the pockets of the govern’t. Why doesn’t the govern’t do soemthing a little usefull like looking into why ticket master can charge $3.00 more than a ticket costs! UGH!!
Make sure it’s a Fuji game (I did the Tigers game), then make sure you’re only asking for Tier Reserved or Bleacher seats. They came up as $5 for me. Good luck.
Drew, so true and i think its soo wrong. Does anyone know why that happened to me?? DO u need a code, if so please tell.
Yea i did, on the ticket specials page but its not working for me….uhhhhh
offer explicitly states that all tier reserved, tier box, tier mvp and bleacher seats will cost $5. So how can they try to sell me a tier mvp seat for $65?
By the way, I sat behind the plate at PNC for the last two games of the 2006 season, and paid $22 for the privilege. I know the Pirates and the Yankees are worlds apart, but the fact of paying $65 bucks for an upper deck seat is galling. No offense to lovers, and I am one, but the Stadium is a dump. I can’t wait until 2009, when we’ll being $80 for the privilege to sit in the upper deck.
tier BOX mvp are 65 bucks. it’s not the same as tier mvp
thats the same problem im having with the bleachers. I really do hate ticket master. I think my left button on my computer is going to wear out ive clicked it so many times for these tickets..
why are the bleachers comming up 14 on mine…is my computer just messed up or something??
I am a retard who has had this same problem for the last 4 years. In fact, as I was typing, I remembered!
Thanks
Bleacher seats ARE $14, I think?
Ashley: Bleachers cost $14.
A tip for the fuji $5 games: They don’t really sell out right away. Not last year anyway. If you have a chance to go to the Stadium, just go and get the tickets that way. Then you’ll have your choice of seats, and you don’t pay the fees. Then they’re really $5 games. That’s what I did last year. I bought a bunch of $5 games on opening day.
I’m a moron. This isn’t the first year I’ve had this problem.
Woo hoo! Got my tickets (for a random game on June 30th) I have never seen ticketmaster move that slow, and yes I can’t stand the fees. But I’m in TN and taking my 3 kids for their first (and last) trip to the stadium ever, and first trip back for me since 2001 before I moved down this way. The stadium is very special to me, as I am sure it is for all of you, and can’t wait to share with my kids. Anyway, I am VERY excited…hoping for a victory against the Rangers that night!! Go yanks.
Rebecca, Yea but not with fuji film dates they are $5 there.
Re Ticketmaster:
I always have them send me tickets via email. They CHARGE $2.50 per ticket. So I paid $7.50 for an email! This monopolistic behavior is criminal. The problem is the demand for tickets is so high, the prices on the secondary market will be much higher than any convenience charge.
This has been your baseball economics lesson for today. Thank you.
Mike, I decided to go with just the tier box seats which are right next to Tier Box MVP for $20 bucks less. The only difference I see other than being cheaper is not being as closer to homeplate…still pretty good seats as far as I am concerned.
Is there any point in continuing to search for tickets at this point, or is it likely they are all sold out? I’ve been searching since 10am on the dot and nothing…
If anyone is interested, I was just able to get 2 sets of 2 tickets for the final friday game at the stadium against the orioles, so there might be a pair left. theyre up in the nose bleeds, but its still the final friday night game so its pretty cool.
If anyone is interested, I was just able to get 2 sets of 2 tickets for the final friday game at the stadium against the orioles, so there might be a pair left. theyre up in the nose bleeds, but its still the final friday night game so its pretty cool.
agreed jashell if you can get the ones right next to them. i got a couple of day games lasy year right next to the mvp and loved them.
and yeah. i’m thinking you’ll get to see the yanks smash the rangers. i’m hoping to go either july 1st or 2nd
MikeEff,
Yeah I was able to land about 2-3 sections down from the tier mvp, which shocked me that I was able to get that close. I was also hoping that a Monday night game in June would not sell out in minutes. Good luck finding some for another game, gotta go no matter what.
My suggestion for those unable to get tickets: Bite the bullet and look for single seats.
Knowing that I just wanted to be in the building, I was able to get singles for three 4th of July weekend games vs Boston, plus the Sunday Mets game.
Wow Stephen, you did good.
That was smart and very lucky of you!!
i usually get tickets from my cousin who sends a list of available sunday games from his plan that he doesn’t plan to use, via email.
didn’t get an email from him yet. hope putting all my eggs in one basket doesn’t come back to haunt me. he sends that out every year.
When the season gets underway, more tickets go on sale. They hold on to some for the various ticket packs. Michael Kay announces on broadcasts when more Red Sox games have become available and such.
For those who didn’t see the USF radio link in the other thread
http://cbsplayer.streamtheworl.....IGN=WQYKAM
Damn I wish I had speakers on my computer
Good Morning! Today’s the first day of baseball. Never mind that other teams have been playing for a few days. lol.
Couple of things. Steve Phillips is still a moron. I guess he missed the tips on how to pronounce Japanese names. Absolutely butchered Kuroda’s name. He’s drinking the Torre Koolade (good luck to him, btw).
Jennifer, I absolutely love Tiffany Blue. Especially when it’s wrapped around something special.
I hope that the Yankees do well but don’t embarrass the college kids. And for heavens sakes, take care of the ball!
Go Yanks!
ticketmaster is the worst but at least you can download the yankees schedule to your calendar now at http://www.mysportscal.com.
If the 1010 sports link doesnt have the game you can also sign up for USF BULLS live stream of the game here http://www.gousfbulls.com/
stepehen:
that is exactly what i did. i got awesome first row of the upper deck single seats for the 3rd of july and the 5th of july against the sox. i have seats to the 4th with a friend.
i mentioned this before, but i love going to the stadium solo. i love meeting the folks around me and have a great time bonding with other yankee fans
rich:
i totally agree. the red sox should be ashamed of the way they behaved against those college guys. show some sportsmanship for christ sake
Jennifer: see if you can steal headphones from someone in your office!
Joba is trash talking.
There’s already some trash talk going on here. Joba Chamberlain spoke at a U.S.F. banquet recently and said he’d buy dinner if the leadoff man gets on base. What if he gets a hit? “That ain’t gonna happen,†Joba told The Tampa Tribune.
I just put it on, I am getting sound out of my tower. I’ll try it and see if it works.
“i really hope the yanks don’t play hard, unlike those unclassy red sox- 27 walks? c’mon, they coulda let the college kids get a few strike outs, right? they coulda dropped a couple flyballs!
sounds ridiculous, right?”
They could have been swinging the bat however instead of taking 27 walks. Especially when they’re already up by 20 runs.
saucY-
Can you get me on your cousin’s email list? Jk
Thanks for giving the link to the game from the last post.
buddy I was thinking the same thing.
I’ve got the stream on now but I have to leave in a little bit =(
Is it on now?
have we determined which radio stream the game is going to be on?
http://cbsplayer.streamtheworl.....IGN=WQYKAM
It should be coming on now.
yeah it’s spring…. yeah nobody cares what the final score is… but as a Yankee fan and a UCF student… a win over USF is just grand lol
ok thats the one i have on…thanks!!!
ME too. woo hoo. I just hope no one complains to be about it.
I think my stream is 10 minutes or so behind
well the game isn’t on yet…at least it isnt on my computer yet
JoeT: My brother, a UCF student, will agree with you as well
A lot of these horrible ticket prices and available problems are due to that terrible decision to make ‘scalping’ legal. Now ticket agencies buy up all the tickets the second they go on sale and re-sell them for outrageous prices. You would think with the stadium selling over 4 million tickets a year, they would be easy to get.
If they would repeal that law, everything would change.
Talk about robbing from the poor to give to the rich!
The game doesn’t start until 1:15
Some car commercial just came on.
Tickets cost that much because you are willing to pay. Its pretty obvious to teams how much you are willing to pay, because Stubhub is basically an open market situation and they can see the sales. Sucks, but it comes with the sport being popular.
trying to see if I’M still on the list, buddy.
last year, i guess he lost my email, but luckily it got forwarded to me from my dad…
this station has more commercials than cbs radio
they are streaming it live!
they just advertised the game coming on!!!
Crazy amount of commercials, but the game is coming on now
‘The bulls step out of conference’
Understatement?
YEAH!!
i’m going home for lunch now….
and to see if i can find me a set of headphones!
you’re not kidding about all those commercials!
Rebecca – I was LMAO at that comment. Yeah, “waaaaaaaaay out of conference”.
CBS usually has a lot of commercials at the beginning of the game too…probably cause they can’t guarantee when they’ll have commercials during the game, you know? Especially with guys like the Red Sox drawing 27 walks.
Is anyone else hearing the “passing gas” commercial?
Oh my god please tell me I am not hearing a commercial about passing gas
That was a…erm…nice commercial?
Derek Jeter and Robbie Cano at 2nd?
Couldn’t that get a little crowded? I know the slash writers would love it, though…
Well, apparently Jeter and Cano are both playing second today…
whoo hoo just what i wanted more commercials
So great to hear some baseball- thanks for the link!
I heard that commercial, too. It’s for stopping smoking, but a pretty juvenile way of getting attention for it.
And apparently both Jeter and Cano are playing second base…
Is this game inaccessible via Gameday? Boooo!! Boo mlb.com, BOO Ticketmaster! That wait this morning was waaayyy too much for my ADHD!
Also, ? for my fellow MLB audio users…I got an email from them a while ago saying they were going to auto-charge my credit card for this year’s subscription. Did they do that yet or do they wait till after ST? My better half handles all the finances so I wouldn’t know from bank statements if the new subscription has begun yet. Also, do they reset your password or is it the same as last year?
Bulls must have all LH pull hitters if Yanks are playing Cano and Jeter at second.
I guess that’ll help Jeter get to more balls hit up the middle.
Let’s see what those UPenn guys say now.
You know, I would like to hear one pitch before I have to go…
I AM SO FIRED UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whoops, disregard my prior audio question…I should have read all the posts first haha. Thanks for the radio link Rebecca!
BBB: We’re all listening here
http://cbsplayer.streamtheworl.....IGN=WQYKAM
BBB–
same password they usually charge after sp
me too drew. it’s kinda fun doing the live blog thing here while we listen…
I LOVE THE YANKEES!!
Or maybe Jeter’s playing on the 2nd base side because he goes to his right much better than to his left.
YAAAAY YANKEE BASEBALL!!! I’m excited!!
And today is the first day my kitten Joba gets to see (er, hear) his namesake pitch! w00t!
Wow sounds like theres a lot of people there.
it’s just ST but Juan Gone has hit a 3 run shot off Johan
raymagnetic
You beat me to that one.
Brandon maybe that will shut a few people up.
So, guys, why did I tell my adviser i could meet him at two today?!
I could have put it off till four…
GOOOSE!
BBB – I use MLB.tv, but I assume they charge at the same time. I called and they told me that my card will be auto-charged on March 7. If you want to be sure about yours though, you can call their customer service at 866-800-1275.
1 down, thanks bobby
Yeah, the radio stream is a little behind.
Anyway, I’m off, because Henry Tudor needs some lovin’
Can somebody help me? Trying to get some tickets. I click on the little green T on the schedule. I follow the prompts and get stuck on the security check page. It says “Type both words separated by…….”. No words are coming up to type in. Does that mean it is busy.
Any other way to get some tickets today?
Thanks
If Michael Kay or John Sterling were announcing this game, that ball would have been hit DEEEEEEEEP to right field and… caught.
.471? Wow haha.
looks like the radio stream is a bit behind the live pete blog
Pete do they have a certain number of pitches they have to reach? or is it just two innings?
JoeT…as a UCF alum I agree!!
MAN!!!Its baseball time!!! Woo hoo!!
so true Jenn but he isn’t going to be that bad, you can tell he won’t be super Johan but he’ll be good.
I still have no regrets
P.S. thanks guys for the 1010 link
I like this announcers! I vote for them to replace sterling.
no strikeouts joba? he must be rusty.
say it aint so:
you’re SO right…expecially sterling. he can give you a heart attack
me too Jenn
Thanks for the clarifications on MLB Audio guys. 3/7 would be a good date for them to charge, I want to catch most of these spring games especially @ Virginia Tech.
Nice 1-2-3 for Joba! Man I missed typing that! Fun times to listen to these radio guys discuss his epic greatness.
SONOFAB****
Clutch HBP! hahaha
Charge the mound, Jeter!
BBB: The VA Tech game will be on YES. Don’t know if you get YES.
hit jeter. CLEAR THE BENCH!!!!
BBB: that was stupid of me to say. If you got YES you probably wouldn’t subscribe to mlb tv.
you know bobby will walk
Yeah Bobby!!!!
i love the hit and run!!!!!
nice hit n run Joe
A hit! Woot!
Man, not a good idea to hit the captain! Oh well, hit and run!
Come on a-rod, show us the $$!
lets see an abomb
Andrea: I don’t get YES but I do get Sopcast!
I have used it for less than a year tho, so I don’t know if they broadcast exhibition games.
Jeter is in midseason form. Does anybody get HBP more than Jetes?
nice sac fly Alex
nice sac fly Alex
big G flies out….
OK so bobby got the first hit of the year.
Booo, why does everyone seem to hit Jeter?
AND he got the last hit last year ( homerun in 9th )
nice palindrome !
hey guys u can listen to the game on the radio at:
http://www.1010sportsonline.com/
I don’t know if I’m late on this, but here’s a link to the radio broadcast from the Tampa sports station:
http://cbsplayer.streamtheworl.....IGN=WQYKAM
It’s Friday afternoon, the Yankees are on the radio, and I’m in a great mood! Have a great weekend everyone!
man they started replaying the 1st inning by mistake, I felt like Desmond on Lost.
K!
3 pitch k for joba!
K! Joba pwns.
BBB: I have NO clue how sopcast works. but if it’s on YES, I assume you’ll at least be able to see clips somewhere.
K for Joba
a-rod gets the pop-up!!
Alex caught a pop up!!!!
Lol, they have a guy named Chris Ray…can A-Rod pls hit a walkoff grand slam against him?
i wish they would call what kind of pitches he was throwing
These announcers are pretty good, but I wish they could tell us what the pitch selection has looked like..
Dman: EXACTLY. give us something.
Mike they are he said struck him out on a a 3-2 slider
maybe they can’t tell what kind of pitches they are, but surely they could see the difference between a FB and a slider…
Yeah they were starting to be more descriptive w/pitch selection in the 2nd. 1st inning they gave us nothing!
So who’s next, IPK?
posada lost the ball too lol.. thats gonna happen a lot with joba this year on that slider…
only 1 K per inning? cmon joba u can do better
i missed that, thanks brandon
not on all of them though
YAY JORGE!!
HIP HIP….JORGE!
HIP HIP !
Hip hip Jorge!!
robbie being patient at the plate…i like it
Thank you very much to everyone who posted the radio feed.
I wonder if the announcers KNOW what kind of pitches they’re throwing.
c’mon shelley!
I like the get-em-on, get-em-over, get-em-in thing they’ve got going on. I hope Shelley continues.
http://cbsplayer.streamtheworl.....IGN=WQYKAM
Broadcastin the yanks game 2day
Nice discriminating AB for Shelley
Yay small ball!
jorge chugs home!!
I love when Posada slides, it’s so messy. Like no one ever taught him how.
Thaks Uke. We’re all over it.
*thanks*
that was an interesting tidbit on Johnny
Maybe this is a good opportunity to play small ball for them. Lord knows they need it.
ok c’mon cap! split their outfielders
yeah i didn’t know that about JD either.
No problem, thought I’d share the wealth for those who didnt see it further up
Finally yankee baseball has begun
did i call that???!!
Pete doing his best Michael Kay impression.
if you want to listen to the game go here:
http://cbsplayer.streamtheworl.....IGN=WQYKAM
At work and the radio is blocked, what did they say about JD?
A grandslam for Arod here would be a nice way to start the season =]
we got that sean, but thanks!!
ok lets see that A-Bomb
Im sitting in Contracts class hearing about Expectation Restitution and Reliance damages and the 18th street bar and grill joke made me laugh out loud… lol the professor asked if I was alright. I tried to play it off as a cough, dont think anybody bought it though.
Arod with 3 rbi’s
lets see if big G can keep it goin’
JD has most stolen bases in the last 10 years
Baseball is Back! and not soon enough in my opinion.
chamberlain looked good huh?
JimL:
they said that damon has the most stolen bases in the AL in the last 10 yrs
i’m SO stoked that baseball is BACK.
Nice thanks!
Call now for fish oil. No meat oil allowed on Fridays during lent.
Ian Kennedy in 2 pitch
I love him
Ooooooooooh, I can get a free bottle of Omegaberry fish oil capsules! But wait, there’s more! Call now and get a free bottle of youth serum!
I love Ian, hez THE MAN
IPK BIG K!
123. thank you Ian
Do I smell a perfect game?! lmao
Pete are you trying to jinx it? You know we never say the word!!
hahaha, just ask the patriots about “perfect”
robbie cano!
i’d like to see everyone get a hit…
I think IPK should groove one for the kid from Staten Island, Mike Consolmagno. He should be leading off the 4th, I think.
oh shelley
drat it
Consolmagno just got a hit good for him
Welp, if anyone had to break up the perfect game at least it was the Staten Island kid w/the name ending in a vowel!
Now THAT’S cool… that guy will be telling that story over cold beers for the rest of his life.
agreed BBB
This live blog brought to you by Benihana. Hideki Matsui may be rehabbing his knee but you don’t have to rehab your appetite. Check out your area Benihana Steakhouse.
HYSTERICAL PETER!!!! I CAN HEAR WALDMAN SAYING IT NOW
Pete you jinxed the perfect game.
truly funny pete
Am back…what I’d miss aside from the Yankees scoring five runs and picking up right where they left off?
Nice way to end it Kennedy.
it’s been fun rebecca, they handed out 3 walks to the yanks. jeter and a-rod batted them in
Great play by play Pete, GO JOBA!
MikeEff: Thanks!
my pleasure…
These college announcers are truly much better that Sterling and Waldman.
No love for Bigalow Green Tea after Torre? That’s always good for a few lives drops in the game.
Pete, you need a William Bartman Jewelers drop in the 4th inning and tell your buddy Feinsand he’s on deck for the 5th.
Its not a Yankee game unless there are 30 live drops per 9 innings!
*than*
jeeeeeesh.
bobby…back to his BB self. i love it.
Every time Abreu walks, an angel gets their wings.
hey SJ. hows it going?
BBB LOLOL
damn he was so close to having a story to tell
Abreu in a contract year is a very good thing for Alex.
HIP HIP !!!
First and only triple of the year for Jorge
Yeah Jorge!
Can we hire these announcers? Pretty please?
Jorge with a triple?! This game rocks!!
Jorge- still rolling.
Life is good Mike.
Great thing about baseball. No matter when you go, something can happen you rarely see.
Jorge hits a triple! Amazing.
gayle: don’t be so sure. Remember that time Girardi got a triple in the playoffs? Never know.
That must have been some shot if Giambi scored from 1st.
Robbie, hon, I know it’s spring training and doesn’t matter, but don’t they tell you not to swing at 3-0?
cano swinging at 3-0?
BBB –
Great hit, Jorge!
Mercy rule time. Time for the regulars to get their running in, a quick 9 holes and onto their evening reservations at Bern’s Steak House.
Sending good thoughts and wishes to Bobby Murcer.

Pat,
Not really. Jason has wheels now! lol
Cano w/ a cheapy
King Albert just rocked Duaner Sanchez’s fastball out of the park
work that count shelley!!
“Robbie, hon, I know it’s spring training and doesn’t matter, but don’t they tell you not to swing at 3-0?”
Depends. If you see a pitch you like, why not swing 3-0? I mean…the guy usually grooves one. Pick a part of the plate and a pitch, and if you get it…swing!
GO SHELLEY!!
Probably pull regulars after Phil’s inning.
Now, if we could do this against Boston on a regular basis…
SJ
Maybe its all the running in ST.
don’t worry rebecca, we will!
I hope they start pulling the regs. get Tabata Jackson and Gardner some field time in this game.
After all of the bashing for what the Sox did to BC with the 20 walks, etc- don’t guys have to start taking some cuts at 3-0 to avoid doing exactly the same thing?
the AG steps in…
Gonzo is in !
MikeEff, I LOVE the optimism!
like the Office mention…
i’m just having a ton of fun listening to this rebecca!
Posada triple – how did that happen, did someone fall down?
last year Po loped around the bases for a triple when Girardi was announcing a game, and then YES showed Girardi’s 1996 game 6 triple. Was hysterical – Posada made Girardi look like Rickey Henderson or Ty cobb by comparison
here comes Phil
time for the franchise
I missed a few minutes, who all got pulled and who replaced them? Thought I heard something about Colin Curtis?
I want to see (er, hear) Gardner…
Love the simple play-by-play Pete. Easy for me to read the important stuff while keeping up the illusion I’m actually working.
Michael Kay, take note.
Michale Lupica, take a leave of absence.
Matsui-san, take a few shots of shochu, have some Kobe beef, and get your knee better.
The Yanks starting lineup against a couple freshman pitchers isn’t fair (at least it’s not mid-season when the batters have had a few months working on their timing) but I’m sure the kids are happy to be playing against them.
K #1 for hughes
Colin Curtis is as fast as Gardner more power.
meanwhile ATL 10 LAD 2 in the 5th
but remember it’s ST
ACTION JACKSON IS IN !!!
so did everyone get a hit except giambi?
Great job by Girardi, with all the running he’s making them do Posada now can get triples.
K # 2
1 more Phil and you can call it a day
go phil!
any reading on the velocity on his fastball?
the kids are DEALING today
Who’s for striking out the side?
2 K’s, woot!
Can’t wait for an Action Jackson AB! Nice to see our old buddy Nick Green too.
Brandon i had that taping on my TV
frits:
they haven’t been giving us much regarding what kind of pitches and no radar
nice showing by our young 3
This may or may not be a stupid question, but do the college kids get to use aluminum bats?
Brandon: Thanks for the Yankees West update =D
wood bats
Flam: No.
that is a quick OF
Jackson 4.3 speed
Curtis 4.4 speed
Christian 4.3 speed
Nice hit Curtis! From their commentary his speed sounds impressive…
Woohoo! Why are we the home team?
The radar readings aren’t necessary right now.
Everybody is just beginning to get going so, you won’t be seeing guys throwing full throttle.
For the first couple of outings, its about location, working on your pitches, and coming out of each game healthy. Velocity comes later.
Thanks for the game updates, Pete. Great stuff.
Yah Curtis is a solid player.
“This may or may not be a stupid question, but do the college kids get to use aluminum bats?”
only if Mussina is pitching.
This one is for Hank and all those yankee fans who wanted a Big Trade:
Santana’s line for today
2 4 3 3 0 1 and a homer 13.50 era so far
The Big Three Today
5 1 0 0 0 5
Pete please stay to see Horne pitch!!
One thing we are seeing that’s encouraging. Productive outs.
The last couple of years, the Yankees have gotten away from moving guys over, hitting behind runners, making productive outs, etc.
Its only the first game but, it seems its something they are working on and that’s good news, IMO.
Am I right in that no Yankees have been struck out yet?
billy james: THANKS I LOVE IT
I think I got Christians speed wrong he is the quickest out of everybody in the syatem other than the S.I. kid Almonte
I should go write down Johans line for my co-worker.
i believe you are correct rebecca. igawa up. hmmmm.
it’d be nice to see igawa make a comeback…
what igawa lacks in physical strength, mechanics, and strike-out ability he makes up for by keeping balls up in the zone and inducing a lot of fly balls.
Igawa up…there goes the shutout.
Haha j/k…new year, clean slate for everyone, even the puckered face highball throwing sunglass wearer!
Better Igawa pitching now than Game 7 in october.
also, if he can’t get a guy out by inducing a fly ball, he just walks them. that way they can’t hit home runs. excellent!
ball 4. i guess that’s no surprise. if the play book goes as usual. they will hit the next one out of the park.
Looks like Igawa can’t find the plate against college hitters either.
He’ll be starting the season in the Scranton rotation.
Igawa makes my blood pressure go up
Christian is extremely fast. He is in the Brett Gardner range of speed.
Unfortunately, Collin Curtis is not fast at all. If he were he’d be an interesting prospect because he’s a decent hitter, but lacks power.
pitee-full as uncle jed clampett would say
damn you Igawa making Romine hit the ground
see? those last two probably would have hit homers. better safe than sorry.
Igawa.. Come on..
So far our lefty canidates for the bullpen have been terrible..
Henn and Traber had bad intrasquad games, and Igawa is walking College players and throwing wild pitches..
Nice..
its prob for the best that pete stop blogging before we all go completely irate with any more Igawa reports.
Igawa is just making it interesting.
igawa has strikeout ability – last year, 53 K’s in 67 IP. it’s what gives him some hope. can he adapt to MLB & keep the ball low is the question.
Boo Pete, I want to know about Horne!!
ALso Igawa is total garbage. One of the worst signings by Cash!! I wish he’d show something so we can get a bag of balls for him.
damn you Igawa
It may appear NY’s pitchers have been dealing but they ARE pitching against a college team. Neither side are going to risk injury at this point. They’re all working on their games … the pros and the college guys. Even if the college guys have a few games in the books already, it’s still real early in the season for them.
They’re not looking for ‘dealing’ ‘velocity’ ‘overpowering’ ‘disemboweling’ and all that fun stuff. Save that for the Red Sox.
Igawa is terrible. Walking two guys and a HBP, maybe Joe will yank him out of there. Bases loaded against a college team. Lets return him to Japan. He is all over the place.
Send igawa back to japan please…
In My best John Sterling Impression:
One thing you can say about Igawa, Susan…
He certianly knows how to keep a game exciting.
unreal
grand slam. that is just too good to be true. see what happens when he runs out of baserunners to put on?
pathetic!!! yay igawa!!!
Just gave up a grand slam. WOW. Just terrible.
Ha, GRAND SLAM…
…Erm.
Like I said, better Igawa now than in October…
this is great guys.. the worse igawa does, the better we can bury him in the minors.. ihope he fails horribly all spring
just to be clear – i mean “good” in the sarcastic, ironic sense.
LOL Igawa, showed up by a college kid.
Now, THERE’S a story….
What I would gived to see Girardi’s face right now.
Igawa…..grand slam….get rid of em!
Igawa gives up a grand slam to a college player on a 1-2 count. What’s next for this guy?
It is high it far it is FOULL no wait I dont have a monitor … Shes gone its a grand slam..
Also my Sterling impression
Holy cow. The kid hit a grand slam against the Yankees. He’ll be glowing for days.
too late to unload him now
Haha Igawa… If I see your name on a MLB roster when the Ynakees break camp I’m going to…
Well, I’m not going to do anything, but I’ll be slightly upset.
igawa is garbage.. we need to pay him to leave
garbage
HaHa…
I think it’s safe to say that Igawa isn’t going to make the team coming out of Spring Training.
Just trade him to the NL in a big yard like Petco and be done with this experiment.
It is amazing that Igawa can give up a grand slam to someone who doesn’t yet have a hit in his COLLEGE season
billy james:
igawa has got to be on the train to SWB ASAP
Can we PLEASE get rid of Igawa?
Igawa has pitched himself to AAA. No surprise.
Too funny! Igawa walks 2, hits another guy, and gives up a grand slam to a college kid, who is hitless for the season!
Thank God he won’t be on the 25 man roster.
At this point, he may not be able to make the Charleston roster, let alone Scranton’s.
With all the arms in the organization, it wouldn’t shock me if they just release. At some point, you can waste your coaching and development time on a guy that just isn’t any good.
Can we at least trade you for one baseball. Damnit you suck!! a gs against a college team!!
Do we really need to discuss Igawa again this year?
That was the first hit of the year by the kid who just hit the slam. So…. college pitchers are getting him out but Igawa can’t. Forget about the minors maybe Igawa needs to pitch against high school kids. 4 runs on 1 hit. buh bye Igawa
Breaking news, Igawa still blows!
Good for the kid though (who had gone hitless in USF’s reg. season up till now, apparently) he won’t be buying any of his own drinks for a loooong time!
This is TOO funny
Walk, wild pitch, walk, HBP, GS
Oh Igawa-san…
The kid doesn’t have a hit in college this year, but he hits a grand slam off of Igawa. That’s just terrible. I swear, the Yankees should be tested for drugs for signing this guy.
I look for the moral victory that is giving the college kids a more sportsman-like game than the Sox did
Spidur
For years…forever. I think it’s cool.
Any chance Girardi said “Hey Kei, go throw beach balls and give that kid a thrill, huh.” Maybe?
SJ you’re right about SWB …what WAS i thinking?
didn’t they get an offer from the padres for him late last year?
Has it ever been figured out who the scout was that recommended him so highly. You know Cash certainly had not seen him so he was going off of his scout/s recommendation. And if we do know is he still with the organization as I have seen nothing so far based on last year that warrants the kind of money and energy that has been spent on him.
Marcy-
Well hopefully we don’t have to discuss him because hes busy ‘working on his delivery’ down in the minors.
Igawa is a real hoot.
Igawa makes my blood boil
This is an expensive lesson to the Yannkees. Don’t buy the crap pitchers that Japan is selling.
Maybe the Yanks should send Igawa to play in Little League. Is that more his speed??!! How pathetic.
haha. I was gonna jokingly say something about Igawa allowing the score to get tied. I wasn’t that far off.
Didn’t some Single-A kid hit a homer off the Rocket last year?
I so want Igawa out of here. I don’t care how!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Igawa signing has become as much of a fiasco as Pavano’s. Let’s just pray he’s never again needed to pitch for the Yankees.
PHIL HUGHES is Saved:
don’t sweat it…we gotta just laugh it off.
i mean 2 walks a HBP and ending it all with a grand slam is just too hilarious
This reminds me a bit of last year at the start of spring training when Igawa threw his first few bullpen sessions in front of the yankee coaching staff.
The staff was befuddled by what they saw. They tried to spin it but you could tell that they were sort of shocked by how bad igawa looked – like he had no professional experience at all.
After the game their going to say Igawa is from Japan and is used to a lot of work. This year they are changing his spring training regimen, letting him do more work like he did in Japan so it’s just an issue of it being early in the year, blah, blah, blah.
At this point, throwing the ball over the plate against a mediocre college baseball team isn’t even about “ability.” You have to wonder if Igawa even believes he can pitch for a major league team.
They are going to wind up dumping him for nothing at some point this year to an NL team.
Miranda is in move back !
John in Ohio: Cameron Maybin, but the difference is that Maybin’s supposed to be amazing.
“Has it ever been figured out who the scout was that recommended him so highly. ”
I believe it was Mike Pags. (Don’t really know how to spell his last name.)
When I saw Igawa in ST last year, I thought he was the worst pitcher in the organization.
That’s not hyperbole. That’s what I thought when I saw him pitch.
I said as much in the blog and got killed for it by the statheads who kept reciting his Japanese stats to me.
Japanese baseball is AA-AAA level baseball. Their pitchers pitch up in the zone and its a completely different style of play than MLB.
I for one have never thought Igawa could adjust to MLB. He’s a RH version of Colter Bean and nothing more.
If the Yankees didn’t have millions tied up in him, I bet they would have DFA’ed him last year.
This year? I can’t see this guy ever seeing the ML roster. He just isn’t any good.
With all the good, young arms in the organization, its a waste of time to have him fill a AAA or AA rotation. You take away a spot for a more deserving candidate putting Igawa in a AA or AAA rotation.
Not worth it.
and maybin is one of the guys that the foolish tigers traded away to the marlins
Ray – I think Pags on his website said that he was bad
It was Maybin who hit the HR off of Roger but he was in the majors not a college kid who had not gotten a hit and Maybin is the real deal one of the keys to the dontrelle deal
“Didn’t some Single-A kid hit a homer off the Rocket last year?”
You might be talking about Cameron Maybin formerly of the Tigers…
But he is also one of the best prospects in the league.
Granted, it was his only homerun in his short MLB season
SJ never mind Igawa making the Charleston roster or Scranton’s roster. From the looks of it he wouldn’t even ake the college team that just rung him up.
No wait scratch that … he’s working on his stuff … right?
Ha. What stuff?
i just got in and read about igawa… omg that is just hilarious. better we know right away than get teased and dumped like pavano last year. i would have thought that it was impossible to get moved from #6 starter to maybe #13 starter in an exhibition vs. a college team but igawa coninutes to amaze!
Jeff Karstens looking good already!
Igawa’s performance today was kinda comical.
I just pray we see very little of him during the season
ooooooooooooh Justin just missed a triple :lol
Another point on Igawa – I don’t even want to see him in the Scranton Rotation.
I think that would be a considerable mistake. If the yankees don’t believe he will be even a marginally tolerable MLB quality starter for them then they shouldn’t waste a AAA rotation spot on him.
They have way too much pitching depth and kids who need development time to waste a valuable Scranton rotation spot on him.
The Igawa mistake will only be compounded if they wind up keeping a guy like McCutchen in Trenton because there aren’t enough spots in Scranton while Igawa is burning a slot for no reason.
Actually Pagliarulo was against the signing oh so he says.
The announcer says…..”The grand slam came off a legitimate major league pitcher in Igawa”. LOL
Its not a question of him giving up a HR. That happens to anybody.
Its the walks, with a 9-0 lead, the HBP and the utter inability to throw strikes.
He is what he is. A bust.
No big deal since he won’t be on the Yankees roster this year.
Just an example of how NOT to spend money. You learn a lesson and move on. All you can do.
Marquez is next
thanks for that info raymagnetic
have they fired that scout? does anyone know? SJ?
how many did hughes strike out?
hughes got 2
cmon guys dont be so harsh on igawa! this is first game! he is not in midseason form! hahaha what a joke! just like what people were telling me about mussina. please cashman cut mussina and igawa.
Whats the big fuzz he had 2 strikeout’s
Pags was the guy that lobbied for Igawa , too bad Cash actually belieeved in Pags scouting report
I almost feel bad for Igawa.
Almost.
Still, if I’m that USF kid with the grand slam, I’d be elated for weeks to come. It’s something you’ll tell grandkids.
A Yankee fan’s dream. Clear useless roster space of Igawa and Pavano sooner than later.
I almost feel bad for Igawa..
He doesn’t fit in, it’s almost mean to keep marching him out there.
I think San Diego did want to trade for Igawa, but they wanted to get him for little more than a bag of baseballs. In hindsight we should have done it just to be rid of him!
Anyone as bad as Igawa SHOULD wear sunglasses all the time.
Pags was against the signing after it didn’t work out.
It depends on who you believe. He had a deal to scout Japan for the Yankees.
Mysteriously, it ended after the Igawa disaster.
He says he was being made a scapegoat. Others say, he was the guy pushing for the Igawa signing.
The truth? Probably somewhere in the middle, like it usually is on these, “he said, he said” deals.
Supposedly, the relationship between Pags and Cashman is better now. He still isn’t (as far as I know) contracted by the Yankees to do any more Japanese scouting.
IIRC the same person who wrote the report up recommending the Yankees go after Igawa came out and saig the Yankees were stupid for going after Igawa. Is charleston our lowest level? We should stick him there.
Can we trade Igawa to the Bulls for Mike Consolmagno?
Actually upon further review it was Pagliarulo’s company who said Igawa could be a 4th or 5th starter in the US. At least according to Bill Madden.
http://www.nydailynews.com/spo.....anges.html
I honestly don’t know who or what to believe. Igawa just isn’t any good however and whoever recommended him should be banned from working as a scout.
“he is not in midseason form! ”
Nonsense, of course he is! Crappy midseason, crappy now…
thanks SJ!
Comparing Mussina with Igawa is flat out dumb.
The Yankees aren’t cutting Mike Mussina, nor should they.
One his worst days, Moose is still much better than Igawa.
Rebecca
I know that Maybin hit one when he got called up by the Tigers, but seems like a kid hit one off Rocket is an actual Single A game, when Rocket was preparing for joining the Yankees. (Maybe I’m not recalling accurately.)
sj is right on, the homer wouldnt matter it was the walks, wp and hbp that show what he is. the homer was just a fitting joke.
I like Marquez I keep thinking he’ll be better than Wang for some reason.
the difference between Mussina being not so good in intra-squad and Igawa here–Mussina wasn’t even as bad as Igawa is right now, allowing no HR, and Moose was facing MLB hitters. Igawa is facing college kids.
Did Igawa get pulled after the GS?
i wish i could actually see these young pitchers of ours
Ooops….sometimes mixing work and Yanks/LoHud can be tricky. Get a little confused on occasion.
John in Ohio: Okay, you might be right on that, but I just remember the Maybin one.
SJ, remember…don’t feed the trolls.
i miss the point where its only spring training and people already jumping on igawa! come on he can improve. i believe in him!
i’m sure david ortiz is so scared of mussina’s 84 mph fastball
That’s high praise Brandon. If it happens I’ll make sure to give you credit wherever I go.
There is a difference between Mussina and Igawa about 245 wins. Mussina has ability and is trying to get his arm slot build up arm strength etc. Igawa just plain sucks, couldn’t find the plate; walks guys hits them.
There are times when somebody has to own up to a bad deal and cut their losses. Such is the case of Kei Igawa. A lesson has been learned. If a pitcher can’t throw strikes there’s no point in wasting more time.
I am writing this as I sip a mojita. I am on day 4 of a 14 day southern carribean cruise.
Nothing warms the heart than realizing that Yankees baseball is being played again. I’ve also enjoyed checking on this blog while I’m away.
jennifer: SJ, you and I fed the troll. We suck.
who just got that hit guys?
What did Austin Jackson do in his AB?
Ransom got the hit.
jenn: That’s a great way to put it!
Clay I am with you I go on a cruise every December and checking in while during the hot stove at sea is fun
Someone needs to start a Project K29 for Igawa. Project A13 seemed to work for Alex last year.
How did Marquez do?
Do they have a seat for Igawa on the USF bus?
I’m watching Eddie Kunz aka The Joba Chamberlain of the Mets *coughs* SNY and Mets scouts should get kicked in the nuts for starting that ugly hype
thanks KB
Pete – I love the mid-inning sponsorships. U should toss in a between innings Sterling-esque live read commercial too.
You sure make spring training fun for those of us who aren’t enjoyin’ that 71 degree heat.
Hey, do any of the rookies have to caddie for Yogi on off days?
Steven
The biggest difference between Igawa and Mussina, other than wins, is control. Igawa has serious issues putting the ball where it should go.
Jenn Marquez got 3 GO
Whew!
Just got in. I was reading Pete’s game thread and was feeling really good about the three kids. And then…
Well, I gave Igawa all sorts of the benefit of the doubt last season. However, it seems to me, and I know it’s only the first game of spring training, that he just can’t put the ball where he needs to put the ball. It seems to me that with the Yankees pretty much going out of their way to accommodate Kei’s method of training as much as possible, and for him to make a showing such as this one today against a college team no less, just says volumes about the mistake the Yankees made in signing him. It’s one thing to expect someone to be an ace, and they’re not; but here, all they were expecting was a #5 and he’s not even close to that. You can’t take the chance of using him as a long man in the bullpen because he has no control. None. Zero.
Was it SJ44 who said above that they have too many good arms in their system to waste any more time here? Right on. It’s only money. And hopefully a lesson learned in desperation signings, or whatever this was.
Anyway, hurray for Joba and Phil and IPK. Sounds like it was a pretty good outing for all of them.
the thing about trading igawa now is that it’s a classic case of selling low. we bought extraordinarily high, and if we were to trade him now it would basically be a citigroup-style writedown, 2 pennies on the dollar. it doesn’t hurt to keep him in AAA and hope he recoups some of his trade value. maybe we can get a dime out of it.
I believe John in Ohio is talking about Rockets start in the class A Tampa where a kid took him deep. His name was Erik Lis.
Oops!
I wanted to say, Pete, you had me laughing like crazy with your 18th man up commercial break! Very Radio Broadcast. Very, very sterling. You could have a future in copy writing!
all the kids were great doreen. marquez as well
Since when does a girl named Jenn pitch for the yankees?
“I like Marquez I keep thinking he’ll be better than Wang for some reason.”
What??
A guy with a K:BB a little over 2:1 in AA, with a WHIP of 1.35? Why would you EVER think he’ll be better than Wang? Sure, Wang’s K:BB is also low, but he’s done it for two years in the Majors, with a WHIP better than what Marquez has put up in the minors.
Marquez is doing it at a younger age and his last playoff game gave me a good impression
Anyone know what A. Jackson has done today?
LETS GO ACTION !!!
no one wants a piece of crap like igawa. i would rather have fat old irabu than igawa.
go nyr ?
Doreen: Spot on.
MikeEff -
Thanks for that info! Is the game over yet?
I’ve heard rumors that Cashman is on the phone trying to trade Igawa to Warner Robins, Georgia for the rights to Dalton Carriker. That kid is clutch! I am very excited.
Brandon,
You know that Kiki was talking to the Knicks about the GM job right? If Isiah is gone the summer of 2010 is gonna look real glorious for the Knicks.
KB AJ is at bat with the bases loaded
“I like Marquez I keep thinking he’ll be better than Wang for some reason.”
so you think everyone in the farm is going to be cy young caliber? you’re dreaming
but AJ just popped out KB
doreen it is not over. the top of the 8th is up next
if you want to listen , here is the link
http://cbsplayer.streamtheworl.....IGN=WQYKAM
I think it’s Horne’s turn now
Mike R: LMAO
Doreen: Not yet, listen here:
http://cbsplayer.streamtheworl.....IGN=WQYKAM
Scranton rotation roughly looks like this:
Steve White/ Alan Horne/ Jeff Marquez are basically locks, unless on the off chance Horne or White make the major league team on the pen (not likely).
Then there are a plethora of other arms who the yankees probably want to keep as starters right now:
Chase Wright/ Karstens/ Rasner/ Dan McCutchen.
On top of that Humberto Sanchez should be up in AAA once the weather warms up. He’ll start in Tampa probably to throw in the warm weather but he’s going to need a spot in the AAA rotation in the not too distant future.
Igawa may have more trade value if they keep him as a AAA starter. I’d guess that’s what they’ll do. But I don’t like him clogging up a spot when there are so many other arms who should be at the AAA level.
“Marquez is doing it at a younger age and his last playoff game gave me a good impression”
Doing what? Playing averagely in AA? So? Marquez’s numbers are unimpressive for a starter, and his stuff is good but not great. He’s your garden-variety sinkerballer, which is certainly useful. Wang, however, throws hard AND has a killer sinker. Marquez is most likely a back-of-the-rotation guy or a reliever, MAYBE a 7th-inning type guy.
c’mon alan , throw a strike!
Rebecca,
Thanks. I had just scrolled up to find the link! I’m listening right now.
Thanks, MikeEff, too.
i love him getting out of a 3-0 jam
For a second, I thought tomorrow was the game that was going to be on tv against the Phillies. Oh, how sad I am that I have to wait until Sunday
I swear to God, if Kei Igawa is ever in the Bronx this year or any other year going foward, Im becoming a Devil Rays fan
whozat I get it you don’t see Marquez that high, I do. You can call me out on it midseason or at the end of the year if I’m wrong.
Perhaps, I’m the lone dissenter, but I’m not prepared to give up on Igawa just yet, certainly not before Spring Training ends.
I’ve written this before and I’ll write it again. If the Yankees can re-condition Igawa to stay between the belt and the knees in the strike zone, he’ll be an effective major league pitcher.
He’s a lefty, always an asset in YS, and his changeup has impressed when he can command it. That game against the Sux in April last year was NOT a total fluke. Watch it again if you have the opportunity and observe where the ball is in the strike zone. He had 6 SOs that day, including one of Manny.
The problem thus far is that Igawa, for some reason, hasn’t learned to repeat the delivery Eiland taught him that will keep the ball low in the zone.
Nice inning from Horne, especially positive to see him come back and get that first guy.
Thanks MikeEff- no Tabata today yet?
I don’t think Marquez will be better than Wang, but give Brandon a break. The guy expessed an opinion. He didn’t state it as fact or in an arrogant way.
so far all the young guns – no runs and what..one, two hits maybe.
igawa- a joke
if my eyes are right, anti-pettitte just kind of implied that Wang is a Cy Young caliper pitcher… WOW!
is sunday’s game on YES?
Igawa gave up the grand slam, right?
we haven’t seen tabata today. ( have we? )
Thanks NYR
Erik Lis it was.
Kill Schill, I hope you’re right about Igawa. He could be a force if he can put it all together. I do however have my doubts about him.
saucY I caught that too
i don’t think you’ll have to worry J-train
agreed that it kind of sucks to have Igawa clogging a spot in AAA. what would be even worse is if he ends up starting for SWB on June 7th…
youngtimer – yep, who else? :\
“If the Yankees can re-condition Igawa to stay between the belt and the knees in the strike zone, he’ll be an effective major league pitcher.”
isnt that what they spent all last season doing? Sounds like everyone else did fine though.
Mike most likely Tabata won’t play today, he’ll probably be in the lineup vs Philly
Marquez isn’t in the same league as Wang.
Wang throws a 96 MPH sinker. Very few guys in the game throw that pitch.
Jeff is a nice arm whom I hope pitches very well this spring.
They can then trade him (and others) to the Pirates for Damaso Marte.
Put Marte in the bullpen and this team has no weaknesses.
Its going to take a combo of Marquez, McCutcheon and/or Horne to do that deal, IMO. The Yankees have been sniffing around the Pirates recently.
Marquez’s best value to the Yankees will come in a trade. Provided of course, he pitches well.
Too many other guys in the organization with higher ceilings.
Its not 2002 anymore. If this was 2002, Marquez would have Hughes-type hype by the Yankees. Right now, he isn’t even in the Top 6 arms in the organization.
Hughes, Joba, Kennedy, Horne, McCutcheon, Brackman and Betances are have higher ceilings.
He can pitch in the majors, IMO. Just not for the Yankees.
Me too Ray. Me too.
Kill Schill -
It’s just not too encouraging that so far he’s shown very little ability to stick with the better mechanics, or repeat that motion.
I think Chase could be our lefty bullpen option this year. He pitched pretty well last year with the exception of those four homers that nobody will let him forget.
Mike R. -
What four homers?????

i think we’d much rather keep horne than marquez, right?
your right SJ but instead of Horne how about Ohlendorf, Gonzo and Marquez for Marte instead of that proposed deal, while we’re at it throw in Igawa
You know, these announcers are more complimentary to the Yankees than their own announcers are!
“give Brandon a break.”
Why? We’re here for rational discussion, right? I have data that directly contradicts his opinion. I’d like to see him substantiate his point of view.
I’ve never understood where this point of view that opinions are incapable of being incorrect came from.
Kill Schill, miracles are nice, but, I mean, c’mon. You’re a Dolphins fan.
I think Wright can contribute from the BP better than Henn IMO
Doreen – It happened during the strike shortened 2004 season. You probably don’t remember because there were no playoffs that year.
You can’t take one, fluky outing against the Red Sox and use that as a springboard for Igawa.
His other 15 appearances were God awful. Everybody can catch lightening in a bottle once.
Here’s the problem with “re-conditioning” him.
For his entire life, he has pitched up in the zone. That’s how Japanese pitchers are tought to pitch. Its not easy to change 20 years of work. Its especially tough when you don’t possess a plus fastball.
In other words, if he misses, he gets hammered.
He just isn’t good. He’s like just about every Japanese pitcher who has come to the majors. VERY overrated and over-hyped.
At some point, the Yankees are either going to have to DFA him or deal him to anybody for spare parts.
There are too many outstanding young arms at every level of the organization now. You can’t waste a spot on Kei Igawa because if he has ANY upside (and that’s highly doubtful) he’s at least two years away from showing it.
For an organization loaded with young arms like the Yankees, its a waste of time to use your resources to work with Igawa.
was that Johan Santana pitching, or Kei Igawa…I really couldnt tell
c’mon chase, lets close this out with a K
“was that Johan Santana pitching, or Kei Igawa…I really couldnt tell”
LOLOL
Mike R –
Aha! That’s why I don’t remember!
theeeeeeeeeeee Yankees win!!
“They can then trade him (and others) to the Pirates for Damaso Marte.”
I thought that, when last they checked, the Pirates wanted position player talent for Marte. I mean…if it gets out that they’re willing to trade him, won’t all sorts of teams be in on it? The Pirates already have a pretty young rotation, no? Would they want solid-but-not-amazing AA/AAA starting pitching?
Nice game. Now I’m gonna go make pasta.
thanks guys, that was a LOT of fun listening together, wasn’t it?
They are also fairly knowledgeable.
ahhhh and Action caught the last out all is back to normal
what was the final score? (couldn’t find headphones at lunchtime…)
bring the Phillies tomorrow on YES !
brandon, Sunday on YES
saucY: 11 to 4.
Brandon: You mean Sunday?
SO basically we pitched well, with the exception of stinkgawa.
I had heard a few months ago the Pirates wanted IPK for Marte…obviously ridiculous, and I think even Marquez/McCutcheon/Horne is too much. I do want Marte too tho, have since last year, but I don’t want to bend over for Pittsburgh unless we’re sure there is no lefty to help from within. I think Igawa & Henn are hopeless, but I still haven’t written off Chase Wright yet. Has anyone heard anything, though, about what kind of future/ceiling they realistically see for him? (Wright that is.)
SJ-
I saw Igawa out here against the Giants where he shut them down, and contributed with small ball on offense. To my eyes, it didn’t look like a fluke. I think it was a matter of temporary confidence and facing an inferior lineup. This is probably why NL West teams have expressed some interest.
I would overpay a bit (in terms of prospects) to get Marte.
The Yankees now have enough depth in the system to do so.
I don’t mean trading Kennedy and Tabata, the offer the Pirates made to the Yankees in December. Obviously, that would be dumb.
I mean 2 or 3 of Horne, Marquez, McCutheon, Wright, Ohlendorf, Curtis, Christian, perhaps a catcher such as Pellitere, Gonzalez and White.
For example, give the Pirates that list and tell them to pick either Horne or McCutcheon, then one or two others, depending on what you get back, other than Marte.
If they can get Marte without giving up Jackson or Tabata, Betances, Brackman or any of the big 3 (obviously, that’s a given), I say they have to do that deal.
You put Marte in that bullpen and this is one, tough ballclub.
Now, are the Pirates going to be logical or stupid? That’s a whole different discussion.
We are talking about an organization who asked the Marlins for Miguel Cabrera when the Marlins talked to them about Jason Bay.
We aren’t talking about rocket scientists in Pittsburgh.
Final score 11-4

Every Yankee pitcher did well except Igawa — heck even Pavano didn’t hurt himself today
!
jennifer…we pitched VERY VERY well. except for that thing.
[/begin sarcasm]
You know, you guys got it ALL wrong on Igawa. He is a HERO. They plunked OUR shortstop, he plunks theirs. He was sticking up for his Captain, and you guys dog him…man…
[/end sarcasm]
Hideki “Fat Toad” Irabu could turn a stomach but Igawa does it faster.
Hughes, Joba, Kennedy, Horne, McCutcheon, Brackman and Betances are have higher ceilings.
If you are going by pure ceiling I think you have to include Humberto Sanchez, Jairo Heredia and Christian Garcia as having higher potential than Marquez.
+ all the regulars had a hit except for Big G
dammit it is on Sunday
SJ44 – Maybe I should have taken the time to read that article in Sunday’s NY Times about the “new, improved” management at Pittsburgh!
watching the dodger game on my dvr (delayed) and hiroki kuroda who went 12-8, 3.56 with hiroshima last year is just about to start. i am in agreement about the japanese pitchers, thier stats have no relevance. i dont think you’ll see a $50M posting for a pitcher again.
I think Igawa is the 21st century Puss filled Toad. Just horrible. Who scouted this clown?
Well, Igawa and his walks aside, pretty solid day for Yankee pitchers..
Glad to see Wright pitch a solid inning.. Hes the only left hander to pitch well so far.
chase wright is downright awful, he’s not even a prospect, forget about him as the lefty out of the pen.
well if it were me no way in hell would I trade top tier for Marte, it just makes no sense he is 34 we can always wait it out. Guys like Garcia, Betances, Heredia and Sanchez I’d be pressed to let them go.
Ohlendorf on the other hand if he lands us hitting prospects we can then trade that to Pittsburgh, the Phillies and Braves would be interesting options get hitting prospects swing that to Pitt
To me the thing about the Pirates is, they’re almost always stupid, but you never know which side of stupidity they’re going to err on in negotiations. Are they going to screw themselves with their idiocy, the way they did including Oliver Perez as a “throw in” to the Mets, or are their delusions going to go the other way with demanding way too much, as they did with the Indians in Bay discussions?
I wish the Yankees could overhype a not-great positional prospect the way the Braves once did with Andy Marte, and then package him with a pitcher like Marquez. Then maybe throw in someone like White on top of that? Would that be too much or not enough? Haha, I’d make a lousy GM…
General MacArthur wouldnt have signed Igawa
The J Train-
I wouldn’t say hes downright awful.. He could be a solid reliever in a season or two.
Heres what MVN had to say about him.
http://mvn.com/milb-yankees/20.....se-wright/
Dman- maybe I was a bit rough with my comment on Wright, but he is not very good nor is he a prospect. I highly doubt he will ever have success at the major league level.
Trading any top tier prospects for Marte would be insane for the Yankees. The guy is 34 years old. Maybe an Eric Duncan or a Brett Gardner. That is who we should be talking about. Marquez and Horne will be 4th and 5th starters in a year. Mussina will be gone. Pettitte will be gone. The Yankees need these blue chip prospects. Tabata and Jackson will be stars within two years.
I don’t think I give up a starting arm like Horne for a reliever like Marte.
There’s no way on earth or any of the other planets that the Pirates are getting 2 from the group of Marquez, Horne and McCutchen for Marte.
Hank just ripped RSN and ESPN hahha. he is the man

I LOVE HANK STEINBRENNER!#%@^
“Dman- maybe I was a bit rough with my comment on Wright, but he is not very good nor is he a prospect. I highly doubt he will ever have success at the major league level.”
So…someone whose got a lot more experience evaluating talent than you disagrees with you, but you’re _certain_ that this guy is a bum? Have you even looked at his lefty splits? Looked at how he does the first time through the order?
“I don’t think I give up a starting arm like Horne for a reliever like Marte.”
Depends…do you think this team is a setup-man away from the series? Do you think that Horne’s control will regress, destroying his shot as a “starting arm”? Do you think that Horne could turn out to BE that setup arm?
Based on Horne’s track record of control problems, and what I’ve read about his arm action that leads to his control problems…I personally think that trading high on him would be the best move, unless they decide to turn him into a 1-2 inning power arm right now.
We’ll see if Marte gets moved. It is not a given as his salary is only 2 million for ’08. The problem is that he has a 6 million dollar option for ’09 (250k buyout). If the Pirates keep him and let him walk, they should be in line for Type B compensation. The Yanks would conceivably have to offer a package that Pittsburgh felt was equal to or greater than the sandwich round pick they would get.
As has been mentioned before, there is no way to tell what the Pirates F.O. will do. I know that it is a new regime there, but they don’t have the greatest track record as an organization.
here we go with the ridiculous, usueless stats that some people seem to think replace actual scouting….let me guess, Chase Wright is 11-3 with a 1.86 era at the high A level against left handers the first time through the order when he eats kraft macaroni and cheese 3 hours before a night game when the Blue Jays are on the road and the Mets are wearing their black jerseys against the braves at shea with the wind blowing due east and the temperature between 77 and 81 degrees on weekdays where there is rain in the upcoming weekends forecast and he watched the series finale of Mash on laser disc.

Yes. I can’t possibly see how success against left handed batters would predict that a pitcher would be useful as a left-handed specialist.
What is the password for fuji film game? I can’t get pass the password page. Thx.
Very nice recap, who needs YES when you have Pete.
I don’t normally comment on on this type of website. I did however enjoy reading the primary post. I will browse the rest of the website. Thank-you
