Live blogging the Yankees-Phillies game
Welcome to beautiful Bright House Field in Clearwater. It’s sunny and 71 degrees and there’s a huge crowd on hand to see the Yankees play the Phillies.
We’ll update you on the game until we have to head down to the clubhouse. Once the regulars leave the game, we talk them right away as most of the guys head home before the game is over.
FIRST INNING
The national anthem was played by a guy with a violin. I love spring training.
They always announce the game-time termperature. It’s up to 74.
Brett Gardner: Single through the first-base hole into right field.
Derek Jeter: Grounds to short, Rollins steps on the bag and throws to first for the double play.
Bobby Abreu: Singles to left center.
Alex Rodriguez: Singles to right.
Shelley Duncan: Crushed the first pitch into the patio area in left field. 3-0 Yankees.
Morgan Ensberg: Struck out.
BOTTOM OF THE FIRST
Rollins: 4-3. Nice play by Woodward going toward the middle and a nice scoop by Shelley to nab the speedy Rollins.
Victorino: Grounder to Duncan.
Utley: Pops to second. 9 pitches/6 strikes for the Wanger.
TOP OF THE SECOND
Jose Molina: Grounds to short. Out by a step. OK, more than that.
Greg Porter: Grounds to first.
Chris Woodward: Singles to center. Tell you what, he’s going to give Nick Green a run for his money for that backup infielder spot. Woodward can do a lot of things.
Gardner: Strikes out looking. Swing the bat, kid.
BOTTOM OF THE SECOND INNING
Ryan Howard: Damn, he looks huge at the plate. Doubles off the wall in left on a 1-2 pitch.
Pat Burrell: Wang strikes him out looking on a 3-2 pitch.
Jenkins: Grounds to second. Howard to third.
Dobbs: Grounds back to Wang.
That’ll complete the day for CMW. 2 1 0 0 0 1 — 24 pitches/15 strikes. Five more of these and he’ll be ready for Opening Day.
TOP OF THE THIRD
Chad Durbin now pitching for Philly.
Jeter: Double to the base of the wall in center. A rocket.
Abreu: Single to right. Jeter stops at third.
A-Rod: Strikes out. Abreu steals second.
Duncan: Who needs A-Rod? Shelley doubles to right and two runs score. The throw beat him to second by five feet but he somehow slid in safely. 5-0 Yankees.
Ensberg: Strikes out again.
Molina: Grounds to short again.
BOTTOM OF THE THIRD
Darrell Rasner pitching for the Yanks.
Snelling: Grounds to first.
Sources say that Anthony McCarron of the Daily News is live-blogging the game as well. He’s pinch-hitting for beat writer Mark Feinsand, who is home for the weekend. A-Mac is a good dude, we rode to the game together and listened to “Deep Tracks” on XM Radio. If he does a better live blog, he can get his own ride home.
Ruiz: Singles to right.
Rollins: Grounds to second, Ruiz takes second on the play.
This live blog brought to you by Roadrunner DSL. That fastball by Rasner was 107 miles an hour. How about that?
Victorino: Draws a walk.
Utley: RBI double to left. Victorino stops at third.
Howard: Walks to load the bases.
Burrell: Flies to left to end the inning. 5-1 Yankees.
TOP OF THE FOURTH
Porter: Flies to right
Woodward: Flies to left
Gardner: Strikes out.
BOTTOM OF THE FIFTH
Billy Traber pitching.
Jenkins: Grounder to second. Traber makes the putout at first as Shelley took an ill-advised dive at the ball.
Dobbs: Flies to center.
Snelling: Also flies to center. Good inning for Traber.
TOP OF THE FIFTH INNING
Clay Condrey pitching for the Phils
Jeter: Draws a walk. What intangibles.
Jeter steals second. What a leader.
Abreu: Strikes out.
Jeter picked off second. Forget what I said before.
A-Rod: Homers deep to left center. Now we know why Jeter was picked off, it just to deny A-Rod the RBI.
Duncan: Grounds to short. Yankees lead 6-1.
BOTTOM OF THE FIFTH
Chris Britton pitching
Eduardo Nunez at short, Marcos Vechionacci at third and Jason Lane in right.
Ruiz: Double to center.
Rollins: Grounder to second, through the legs of Woodward as Ruiz scores. 6-2 Yankees.
Victorino: Pops to third. Nunez deked Rollins into sliding and he was doubled off second.
Utley: Lines out to Duncan at first.
TOP OF THE SIXTH
Ensberg pops to left.
Molina: Grounds to first, pitcher covering.
Woodward: Grounds out to the pitch. 6-2 Yankees.
BOTTOM OF THE SIXTH
Heath Phillips pitching, Jesus Montero catching, Austin Jackson in center, Jose Tabata in right, Wilson Betemit at first.
Howard: Singles to left. He may be the greatest Howard since Ken or Mo.
Clubhouse is open. The live blog is closed. Catch you later.

FYI..The game is carried by the Phillies station on mlb.com
What’s the reason most regular players are off today?
wtf the phillies radio website wont pla ythe game?!?!
I’m listening to it on radio =D
i’m getting MLB TV—–FOR FREE for SOME reason. ( i’m not complaining )
sorry folks it looks like the phillies radio station’s website is not carrying the game
anyone know where to listen to this game on the interweb?
Game doesn’t start until 1:05, maybe it’ll work by then.
And its normally free during spring training.
Okay, I lied. ooops.
Let’s Go Yankees
its only free if u pay for reg season package
According to MLB restrictions, no radio stations streams games live on their website. However, if you subscribe to the MLB Gameday Audio service(just $15 for the entire pre/post/season), then you can listen to the Phillies broadcast on the MLB website.
but i haven’t paid them anything josh.
The game is coming in on the internet!!!!!!
Nice lead off single for Gardiner!
Lead off triple by gardner. I like this guy’s speed!
LOL, the Phillies announcer told what the Yankees were wearing, and thankfully, no use of the word interlocking.
what a ripoff by MLB TV here I thought free access I click it tells me to subscribe today, I going to rip them on sports radio
Well, Jeter picks up right where he left off last season, GIDP…
Nice hit for Abreu.
single*
Sorry, can’t type. *embarrassed*
If you have a subscription from last year on MLB.TV the spring games are free
i’m watching it on WPSG.. philly local channel
3 run bomb..
Brandon, only the radio is free during the spring.
yeah shelly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Big Shelley with a 3-run shot!
shelly crushed it… absolutely crushed it..
3 run shot for Shelley!
3-run HR SHELLEEEEEY!
How can I listen or watch. Please help!!
Give that man a job!
Nice to see Shelley pick up where he left off
SHELLEY!!!!!!
WOW that was crushed
Well, Shelley also just picks up where he left off ;o).
someone post the video link please
someone post the video link please
Eaton is just awful.
It’s my first time seeing live baseball this season- I’m psyched!!!
sorry, im watching on telley here in philly but its on the phillies radio network you might be able to find it somewhere on your dial
Blackaccord – thanks for the WPSG heads up! I am in Philly, but not a native of this area, so never would have thought to look there. I had figured it was CSN or nothing.
Anyway, just tuned in, I’m bummed I missed 3 runs…but it’s Adam Eaton, so there should be more runs to come!
is it cn8 by any chance?
BBB- not to worry, shelley will hit a few more out for ya
No, channel 57
Why can’t the greatest team in the world broadcast every single game?
maybe 1230 from wildwood, nj or 1490 atlantic city?
NICE CATCH SHELLEY!!!
MLB.tv I lied, but the game wasn’t on the radio station I thought it was on, and apparently someone renewed my subscription without telling me. (Thanks, Dad!)
1490 is spanish, 1230 I think is a westchester station. BOo
Jennifer you should be able to get the game on mlb radio. I haven’t signed up for it this year yet, and I’ve got it on.
UGH THIS STINKS!!
Nice start for the Yankees, and it’s good to see Shelley doing some damage against a right-hander. Hopefully it will be a good omen.
Sopcast is up. It’s slow loading up, but anytime Wang pitches, you’ll find a feed.
http://www.myp2p.eu/broadcast......art=sports
sopcast won’t load.
Some help a fellow blogger out!!
mel which one should I click?
Drew I never had it before. I should call my friends husband and get his password.
I’m getting his message on mlb
LERT to Returning 2007 Customers: If you are a returning 2007 subscriber seeing this message, it means that we were unable to process the credit card that we have on file – your subscription has not been renewed for 2008. If you would like to watch LIVE baseball this season, please purchase one of the products below. You will not be billed twice.
Shelley Duncan!!!!! Hooray Beer!!!!!!
jennifer,
They’re both the same channel. If you hover over the link, it gives the channel. Mute it unless you want to learn Chinese.
Never mind, it’s futbol.
I hate to sound stupid, but do I have download something in order to use this?
“I’m getting his message on mlb”
They automatically renew your subscription from year to year, which means that they charge your credit card again. If you’ve canceled the card you used last year, they won’t be able to auto-charge you again, so your subscription will not be renewed.
Thus…people who seem to be getting the MLB.tv or MLB.com radio feeds for “free”…actually, they just charged you again for the upcoming season, and the spring stuff is all included in that package.
For those who are looking for the game on the radio, the only advice I can think of is have you tried WIP 610 AM? Those of you in the Northwest Jersey area may be able to get it to come in, I think it is broadcasted near the NJ/Easton border.
Woodward or Green for backup infielder? I doubt it, probably Alberto Gonzalez
Jennifer, try setting up a user name and password for mlb and access it that way.
Those 2 were strikes to Gardner? LOL. Yea, SURRRRRRRRe.
No go with 610 WIP, they are talking about the Eagles now
jennifer,
Yes, you have to download sopcast, but they have soccer so sense doing it today.
Sopcast covers a lot of live games and some current movies.
I bought the mlb.tv package monthly last season, so I’m in and there’s actual real live baseball on tv. Well on the computer.
Wow. I bought MLB TV when I was a junior in college 2 years ago and I just typed in the username and password and it worked!
must be a glitch. But go yanks.
Wang needs to keep that ball down against big power lefties like Howard.
Peter, I’m not so sure there is a backup infielder job for either Green or Woodward to win. What about Betemit, especially if Girardi is serious about getting Giambi a lot of at bats at first base? Seems like a waste to carry someone who can’t hit and is only a backup infielder (considering A-Rod, Jeter, and Cano play all the time) when Betemit is there. I’d rather carry Ensberg as a pinch hitter or even another outfielder who can steal a bag, personally, but I suppose Girardi may have other ideas.
Oooo. That strike 3 on Buerle was purty.
If anyone would like to follow the game after Pete has to leave for the clubhouse, I’m live blogging the game as well over at my blog. The link is below:
http://mybaseballbias.com/2008.....-phillies/
‘atta boy Shelley!
I hate to admit it, but the YES Network continues to disappoint. Right now on WB11 in NYC, you have the SNY team covering the Mets/Dodgers game. (Turn to it to see Torre in Dodger blue!)
SNY has become my new favorite station–from its news desk, to it’s Daily News panel, even a frequent edition of Mets Hot Stove. Meanwhile, turn to YES and you’ll find reality TV series, another Yankees “classic” from 2007, some lame TV series from the 70’s (White Shadow), and ‘Yogi and a movie”!
All I want is updated Yankees news. They don’t do enough to satisfy this. YES’s Yankee Hotstove airs with no regularity at all.
Pick it up YES! SNY is kicking your butt! (Except when it comes to documentaries, classic games, reality TV, and TV shows from the 70’s).
Peter Rabbit: Yes, but see, as the Mets don’t play in October, SNY has extra time to come up with stuff
I agree, YES is really disappointing, there should be live updates from Tampa every day, a live Yankees spring training show every day, and more broadcasts of the minor league teams once the season starts.
Anyone know the pitching plan for today?
Wang looked great after the Howard double! I think he wins another 19-20 games this season!
Yay Jeter! Take that UPenn geeks!
1210 am has the game and i am in central nj
Damn, Jeter smoked that. Just missed a HR.
“Peter, I’m not so sure there is a backup infielder job for either Green or Woodward to win. ”
Well, it’d be useful to have an infielder who’s actually a decent defender. Betemit is basically a lefty power bat on the bench and a tolerable utility IFer.
I think there’s sort of two spots to assort among Duncan, Betemit, Ensberg, and Woodward/Green. Gonzalez will be playing everyday in the minors to see what his bat’s going to be.
for the people getting ‘free’ mlb: i think they have an option in your mlb account to have it automatically renewed from last year. so if you had an mlb subscription last year, they may have renewed it. not sure if this is true, but if you did subscribe last year i’d look into. hate for you all to find a surprise 100 dollar bill on your credit card statement.
Nice hit Bobby. 1st and 3rd no one out for A-Rod.
Da-yum. For those of you not watching, Jeter looks 5 years younger. Scooped a 2-1 pitch off the wall for a stand-up double. He almost went to third. lol.
“Yay Jeter! Take that UPenn geeks!”
??
You _are_ aware that that study made no claims about offense. At all. It was purely about defense. They didn’t claim that Jeter is the worst SS in the majors…they claimed that he’s the worst DEFENDER at the SS position in the majors. At least, during the time that their sample data came from.
DOU update. Abreu dove back to the base. 20% dirt on uni.
atleast Jetes didn’t hit that famous GIDP
This is the first time I’ve really gotten a good long look at Abreu this spring, other than Newsday’s photo gallery haha, and he does look great. Much trimmer and less bloated than he did early last season.
shelly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m watching the mets/dodgers game. This is so wrong.
Shelley!!! Epic greatness.
Alex gets his first slider since 2007 thrown for K
Shelley is raking baby.
I am watching Yankees ‘classics’ while trying to load sopcast. The game that is on, is Stinkgawa’s debut. It is an awful inning. Ugh why is he here.
shelley is THE MAN
that was a great slide!
shelley MY MAN
Whozat, I was just kidding about the study…not kidding about Penn students being oblivious geeks in general tho
Shelley missed by another 3-run jack by feet. Abreu almost running over Jeter at home. Duncan almost thrown out at 2nd.
Alex was just being unselfish there. Classy move for him to strike out and allow Shelley to drive in two more runs. It’s all good!
Shelley’s making an early statement!
Shelly 5 Phillies 0
Shelley! Shelley! Shelley!
DOU update. Shelley’s pants are filthy from that slide. 50% DOU.
I don’t know much about batting mechanics, but I know enough to know that Shelley has none. He’s our white Vlad.
Okay am I the only one not watching?
J-Dawg that must be the first sacrifice K of 08′
“Well, it’d be useful to have an infielder who’s actually a decent defender. Betemit is basically a lefty power bat on the bench and a tolerable utility IFer.”
Yes, but the issue is there’s zero reason to carry two utility infielders. Unless injured, A-Rod and Jeter will pretty much play 162 games a year. They may miss one or two due to soreness or rest, may DH a game or two, but they’re not going to be sitting much at all. Cano is pretty close to that as well. Wasting a roster spot on “maybe once a month we want someone to play because he’s a little bit better defensively than Betemit” just doesn’t make any sense. Betemit’s not a defensive wizard but he’s good enough that you really do not need to carry Nick Green or Chris Woodward. It’s just a total waste of a roster spot that could go to someone with the potential to hit well (Ensberg) or at least someone who can steal a base and pinch run for Giambi (don’t know who offhand since they probably want to give Gardner and Cristian more time in the minors rather than coming up as a pinch runner).
As far as roster makeup, if you put Giambi at first base, and figure the Yankees will carry 13 position players, that gives you the 9 starters plus Molina with definite, confirmed spots on the roster. Three open spots, and it seems pretty likely Betemit and Duncan will fill two of those, short of them getting hurt or having such god awful springs that they can’t justify being put there (and Shelley’s off to a good start with 5 RBIs off a double and home run already). That leaves one open spot only. Betemit can backup the infield, Duncan can backup first base and the corner outfields, and in the event of an emergency with Melky, Damon and Matsui can switch around to play center. So it seems to me it makes the most sense to carry someone else who can hit or someone who can run, because a defensive no hit infielder isn’t and shouldn’t be getting at bats, and the Yankees aren’t going to be replacing Jeter for defense in the late innings anytime soon.
No, Jennifer, I haven’t figured out how to get it either. Sopcast didn’t work for me.
SHELLEY!
It still says loading.
Mel which one did you click?
Time to see what Rasner has…if anything
So I’m guessing right now, in the first base sweepstakes, Shelley is coming out on top…
jennifer: No I’m shut out just like you. Is there anyway for someone in NJ to get this game?
Brandon- Exactly! I just hope that we don’t have an injury report later of anyone getting hurt from Shelley’s forearm smashes.
jennifer,
They’re both the same channel, if you hover over the link it gives you the channel. BUT, it’s a soccer match.
Rasner in.
I can’t be postitive, but I think that Snelley was going to avoid contract with Shelley on that groundout at all costs.
how does arod look this spring. last year, he came to camp alot leaner and we saw the results during the year..
he needs to stay lean… when he plays heavy, his swing is very late…
how does he look this spring compared to last?
Mel I am so lost!!
I’m not watching the game either. Just following along on the internet. Have the stinkin Mets/Dodgers game on.
I give up.
SHE-LLEY SHE-LLEY SHE-LLEY SHE-LLEY
I have the mets game on too, hoping they’ll show a little mercy and at least cut in on some of Yankees highlights… So far, no dice.
I also have to use the blog to keep up. I’m keeping up with this while listening to college basketball, Duke-NC State.
Pete are you trying to kick us off here?
Jennifer,
How do you watch the games in-season? It might be worth it to buy mlb.tv.
I’m debating whether or not to buy it monthly or the annual.
I can’t watch. I’m flipping between a replay of the abysmally pitched game by Igawa on April 7 last year (one of A-Rod’s walk-offs), and a live ST game between the Mets and the Dodgers. I just realized it was on, so no sign of Joe T yet.
ouch, dont wanna walk victorino in front of utley, howard…
rasner needs to just throw some strikes…
Jennifer,
I think he’s trying to hook A-Mac up with some of the young ladies here.
exactly right Y’s Guy!!!
I think Mark needs to be worried. Tony is doing a great job of there.
Dang, syracuse lost…I have tickets to the Big East tournament, but what fun is that going to be if Syracuse doesn’t even qualify?
I’m also thinking of getting mlb.tv this year. I used sopcast before, but it would just slow down my computer and wasn’t always that reliable. Blah!
YankeeVIP:
ARod looks as lean as last year. Jeter and Abreu also look noticeably lean as well.
I buy MLB.TV monthly…it’s a good buy.
Mel, I’m in Jersey, so I watch it on Yes.
And you could be right about hooking him up.
107 miles an hour? Amazing. I didn’t know that braking a couple of fingers on your pitching hand resulted in a 20 mph increase in velocity!
Seriously, I just imagine that Rasner is happy to be back on the mound after last year’s injury.
seen that utley/howard thing all last year, those guys are GREAT and he had victorino up with 2 outs…
Can SOMEONE explain Sopcast to me?
J-Dawg–Veintisiete en ‘08-
Maybe he had a robotic hand to replace his natural hand?
107? no wonder he walked Victorino.
That was a nice, Abreu-esque AB by Utley fouling off tough pitches in an 0-2 count. Hope to see him doing that to the Muts often this year!
I think Pete needs to get an intern to continue blogging when he has to run to the clubhouse.
Well, when Rasner’s missing he’s really missing.
yep, he shoulda gone after victorino. now he’s paying
did Rasner really throw 107 MPH? I call shenanigans.
Phil Hughes is saved— SopCast also slowed down my laptop BIGTIME when my Polish friend downloaded it to watch European soccer games. I question whether there’s something in the code, possibly malware.
I think the program is really whacked up, so I’m searching for an alternative client that can play sop files.
The game on MLB.TV doesn’t have a radar gun. What was Wang’s velocity?
Also, anyone know how hard Hughes/Joba were throwing yesterday? I know this early of the spring isn’t much of an indication because their arm strengh probably isn’t as strong, but it would be good to know.
ok well he got out of it…not something igawa can claim!!
Wow two players just collided in the Mets game.
ohhhhhhhhhh Gotay and Church just collided they are still on the ground
Watching the Mets game. Marlon Anderson and Ryan Church just collided in the outfield and aren’t getting up. It’s not good, but how many times do Mets outfielders do this? They’re they only team I see doing this.
107? That’s a little crazy.
that was bad.
The only problem I have had with Sopcast is that it is a bandwidth hog. It really uses a lot of bandwidth.
I see other people are watching.
But seriously, do ANY other teams collide lie that? I’ve seen the Mets do it at least twice in the past couple years.
Looks like a definite concussion.
Church looks like he has a concussion
M.A. IDK looks limpy
It was in no mans land, but they definitely should have paid attention to who was going after the ball.
Sopcast has been acting up on me ever since NBA season began. At first I thought it was just rebelling against showing my absolute joke of a bball team but maybe there really is something wrong with it. Anyone else been having trouble lately?
I wonder if XM Radio is a sponsor of this field. It looks like their logo is etched on the infield around the mound. It’s pretty cool.
Yikes, that did not look good. Hopefully they are ok.
Peter Rabbit-Same thing with my computer. I just got a new one and I don’t wanna ruin it or anything. Might just have to pay for the games
Lesson: call louder and call early!
those poor kids. i hope they are OK
keep us posted…
jennifer: you’d think Anderson could have slid or something if he couldn’t stop his momentum. He’d still knock Church over, but it wouldnt’ be as bad.
Now Feliciano is hurt? JEEEZ!
This Mets game is wacky
it didn’t look like either called for the ball, last time I collided was freshman year H.S. that’s why we always call I got it !! jesus the Mets brochure should just have a pic saying don’t let this happen to you
MikeEff: they both walked off the field, Anderson on his own, Church needed help. Church looked knocked out for a minute, Anderson basically just looked like he got the wind knocked out of him. He got a forearm to the chest, Church got an elbow to the head, it looked like.
It almost makes you feel bad for the Mets. Almost.
OK we need THIS lefty to do well.
Hard to tell. Maybe he could have slid, it almost looked like he tried to change his path, while Church changed his path.
For those not watching, Billy Traber in. (Where did we get him from, anyway? Picked him up off the scrap heap? He was w/Nats previously but I didn’t think he was in the T-Clip trade..)
Santana or no Santana, the Mets look like crap right now. I know it’s spring training, but they look like crap. Reyes missed a ball that Jeter would be all over on a bad day, but he’s a “terrible SS.”
lefty traber gets a lefty! nice!
shelley dove for a ball 10 feet to his right!
I couldn’t take it anymore – I went ahead and renewed my MLB.TV account a month earlier than I planned to.
Watching live now – and there appears to be 4 or 5 Yankee games being covered this coming week.
jennifer: I guess. But really, if it were that hard to NOT collide, you’d think more teams would collide more often.
BBB: I don’t think Traber was part of the Clippard trade. I think he was just Clippard for Albaladejo.
Yeah who is he? Are most of the guys pitching, ones that really have no chance to make the team, unless they knock Joe’s socks off.
thanks andrea
traber’s lookin’ good
thanks andrea
traber’s lookin’ good
i didn’t post that twice…i swear
well if shelley dove ofor a ball 10 feet to his right then that means he over played it by about 2 feet haha
Okay just looked on baseball reference. He is from the Nats. I would assume we signed him to a minor league deal.
wow, traber gets 3 lefties! when’s the last time that happened 4 the yanks?
Traber looks like a LH Mussina on the mound. Pretty small in stature and does the hop at the end.
nice inning guys.
Why did Shelley dive if the ball went to second? Will it be on the bloopers reel now?
Well you can’t judge a pitcher by one inning, but I like what I saw from Traber.
So the replay of the April 7 Yankee game is on YES and they just showed the box score. the only O who didn’t get a hit off Igawa was Miguel Tejada. He didn’t get a walk either. Igawa also pitched scoreless innings against the Red Sox.
Maybe he can only pitch against really good hitters?
Wouldn’t that be weird.
a lefty that gets outs. remarkable !
Just wanted to post this again for anyone who missed it:
If anyone would like to follow the game after Pete has to leave for the clubhouse, I’m live blogging the game as well over at my blog. The link is below:
http://mybaseballbias.com/2008.....-phillies/
It says on wikipedia that Traber was signed to a minor league deal on January 5. He was originally drafted by the Mets, selected with the 16th pick of the first round back in 2000. A lefty job is there for the taking, let’s see what he brings.
So Yay Traber!
Thanks for the updates everyone.
yeah, it was a routine grounder when he dove it was at least 6 feet to his right, sarge matthews was cracking up on the phils broadcast. No harm done.
Did anyone else just see that commercial the Mets made about Johan Santana?
Traber was released by the Nats in December and the Yanks signed him to a minor-league deal as a free agent in January.
Ouch. Lester had a rough outing for the Sox.
the Dodgers offense should be better than thjis WTF happened to them ?
did he Mel? what happened>? lotta walks?
Larry Bowa’s protesting helmets for the base coaches. I’d like to see Girardi protest being made to sit in those collapsible chairs used by soccer moms.
jeter almost could’ve stood up on that steal
Andrea, LOL, wouldn’t that be great! But sadly that Igawa scenario reminds me of Pete’s infamous “aliens will land in central park…”
Albaledejo pitches today btw
Jetes looking great on the basepaths! Whoever posted that he looks much younger than last year, right on.
Traber did look good too, and right after I finished bemoaning the fact he was coming into the game….
Da-yum. Jeter stole a base in a ST game. DOU update. 20% on a meaningless slide.
why would Bowa protest helmets?
Jeter, the filthy thief.
well bobby made his first out of the season
Yeah just saw that Santana commercial too. Poor Mets still trying to sell season tickets…wish we have some yankee tickets left to buy.
“Jetes looking great on the basepaths!”
aaaand then he gets picked off, haha.
Yikes. Oh well, it was one inning:
Boston I H R ER BB SO HR ERA
Lester 1.0 2 5 4 4 0 0 36.00
Very nice Jeter
Ooops. The Captain giveth, the Captain taketh away.
MVP MVP MVP!!! (never too early for that right?
)
c ya! an A bomb…….
damn you JEtes !
Alex w/ an F-BOMB !
He was picked off because he was trying to steal.
A-Bomb!!!!!!!
Dee: I was at the game where Karstens went down (v. the Red Sox) and Igawa pitched. I was in the bleachers and the entire section groaned. But as he pitched, we were almost silent, probably out of fear. I just have to say, Igawa confuses the crap out of me.
A-Rodddddddddddddd
Yeah A-Rod!
AAAAA BOMB!
ARod…AAAAAA BOMB
Lester: ouch.
A-Rod: YAAAAY!
Jeter double plays and singles is all he’ll ever hit for the rest of his career.
How A-Rod-ian!
maybe lester and igawa can go out for drinks one night
Wow Arod + Shelly.
pete you’re wrong! arod hit that homer out of spite, just to make the captain look bad. wouldnt be suprised if he told ruiz that jeter was going on the last pitch!
For those wondering about Lester’s line. That was not one inning of work. He gave up 1 run in the 1st and served up 4 more in the second without recording an out.
Edwardo Nunez and Marcos Vecchoniachicantspellhisname in for Jeter & A-Rod respectively.
And our national hero Great Britton takes the mound…
Wow, I think that the Yankees have set a record for most pounds lost in an offseason. I thought Britton was Bruney for a second there.
not pretty woodward…
Traber was a good low risk signing. Even if he doesn’t make the major league club he’ll be a nice veteran to have in the minors.
He’s been fairly bad over the course of his career but he’s also never been given the role of lefty specialst out of the pen.
Over his career faced over twice as many right handed hitters as left handed hitters.
He also has a fairly dramatic split. Lefties only have .210 BA off of him with a .613 OPS (Righties kill him – .329 BA with a .894 OPS).
If they decide to use him strictly for lefties he may be useful.
There’s a lot of uncertainty with the pen. But there’s a lot of options, with a nice stockpile of young arms.
This is the smart way to build a pen. I don’t think it would be shocking if a billy traber type was as a good as a free agent lefty like ron mahay or affeldt this year in the lefty specialist role.
Woodward Buckner’s one
Andrea I was at that game too, with the Mike Mussina fan club. We had box seats right next to to the bleachers.
Here’s a link for regular MLB gameday of this game. It’s not MLB.TV, so u can’t actually watch the game, but it has the field dimensions, pitch location, box score etc.
http://www.mlb.com/mlb/gameday.....b_phimlb_1
nice HR by A-Rod, Shelley trying to out due A-Rod /facepalm.
damn this guy is gonna ruin the game
excellent fake by nunez, rollins looking foolish
Funky play!
nice play shelley!
Pete and I got a shout out on the Daily News blog.
2:28 p.m.: My sources (thanks yankeeschick!) tell me the Blogfather (aka PeteAbe) has given me a shout-out on his live blog of today’s action. Much appreciated!
http://www.nydailynews.com/blo.....eaton.html
Pete, McCarron calls you the “Blogfather”.
I don’tthink gameday is up to speed
Are the Yankees wearing any patches this year?
Ha HA two kids are fighting during the Mets game.
Andrea, the only Igawa game I’ve been to was his debut, on April 7. I remember feeling so completely pumped on the subway ride home thinking this year IS THE YEAR from the high off that Arod grand slam. But by the time I got home I stopped and thought, wait a minute, that’s was it for $46 mill?
Wolf, what does MLB.TV cost you and do you get the Yankees feeds (broadcasters) or some other teams? Also, how many games per year?
Mel
The broadcasters on the Phillies network could not believe the stats saying Britton weighed 275!
Anthony McCarron live blogging over at http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/yankees/ just called Pete A “the blogfather”
classic
Have they shown Torre’s face yet for others watching the Mets game? I haven’t noticed but maybe I’m just not paying attention.
Dee: they haven’t. That’s what I’m watching for!
Woohoo, can’t wait to get a look at Jesus, Action Jackson & Tabata!
The Blogfather? I like it!
ajax and tabata are in! would like to see someone hit a liner in the gap between them and watch how they do.
They just showed Joe T, he was sleeping but didn’t have tea in his hand.
dale d,
Is that his old weight? Everyone looks trim. Even Betemit dropped 15 lbs. Speaking of the devil, Wilson’s in.
Everyone taking a page out of Girardi’s book. I like it.
Shane! Maui No Ka Oi!
Andrea: me too! I’m preparing myself to get creeped out by the sight of him in that gross cartoon blue.
Right now Shane Victorino is on the Phillies broadcast talking about strong OF arms around the league. No mention of Melky, gotta love it. Good, let everyone keep forgetting and running on him!
hey Dale…hows it going?
‘
Dee: they showed Torre a lot on ESPN yesterday. unfortunately the braves creamed them
lol. “Can’t wait to get a look at Jesus…”
torre did a pregame interview with the sny crew about his adjustments in LA, whether or not he talked to willie, etc. nothing really about the yanks, donnies in the dugout too mustache free in dodger blue…
Vader:
MLB.TV is $14 a month I think? You get EVERY single game except games on Saturdays (FOX blacks them out even if the game isn’t on TV) and games that are on ESPN…which you can watch on TV anyways.
All of the home games are broadcasted by YES and most of the away games as well. You do get some of the away broadcasters sometimes though on the road.
It’s a really good buy…I have bought it the last two seasons.
Just saw Joe T! And Mattingly! I thought he wouldn’t be there??
great shot just now of torre bowa and mariano duncan (yea 1996!) chattin it up, looks like bowa is tellin jokes as usual
bowa was VERY animated yesterday
Now batting, Jesus!
Mel – I am sitting on an absolute plethora of Jesus jokes that I’m saving for when he gets called up to the big club. Can’t wait!
said that the Dodgers offense is regressing under them, the Mets are putting junk ballers out there you can’t hit them ?
leftys are good today.
Awww, I miss Bowa already!
I meant sad not said
Vader – 19.95/mo. and the only big drawback is the blackouts during the regular season. There’s very few of those, though. During the season, it is Yankee broadcasters, but I’m not sure how they work it in ST since this is the first year I’ve subscribed during the grapefruit games.
I think the players will really miss Larry Bowa, especially Robbie and Alex. I miss Bowa.
WooHoo. Nice action there by Jackson. So athletic. haha. Seriously, not a bad inning by Heath Phillips. Looked better than Traber to me.
i miss Bowa too. i think the guys will as well
When Montero makes the big club he absolutely has to use “Jesus Walks” by Kanye West as his AB song!
For you guys not watching, Betemit is so trim that he looks like a darker, lefty Alex at the plate. Even has the high socks thing going.
Why do the Mets broadcasts spend so much time showing fans and interviewing stupid crap?
Wolf do you have DirecTV?
thanks Mel I believe in that guy
Mel – you’re totally right. Betemit looks to be way slimmed down.
betemit is really workin’ it
Still live blogging over at:
http://mybaseballbias.com/2008.....-phillies/
Please stop by if your interested.
That was a much longer, pesky Damon-esque AB from I Want My WB than I remember him having last year.
and the minute i say that he pops out
Mel
Maui no ka oi is so 90’s
to quote Yogi
“nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded”
Mike Eff
doing great listening on MLB audio and refreshing betwen here and two live blogs
How do you guys do this at Work?
Betemit’s AB will show a popup out, but he worked it to a 3-2 count a fouled off alot of pitches. Long AB. Looking good.
Betemit absolutely needs a new AB song. “Better Man,” what he used last year, not good.
for anyone with YES, it’s at the inning where A-Rod’s about to hit his walk-off. Very soon. Oh, the excitement.
Vader – no, I have thought about it the last couple of years but haven’t pulled the trigger. My understanding is that I could get YES on there, but I just haven’t been able to justify the money yet. Sucks….at some point I’ll take the plunge.
dale d,
It’s only really crazy on Halloween night. Crazy tourists. Torre still goes there.
I am confused. How are the Dodgers playing st games in Fla?
Mel, Wolf, Mike and other guys watching the game –
Thanks for that about Betemit. What else? Would love to hear any other scraps of info. How’s Girardi looking? serious or relax? Is Hank there?
Andrea: Agreed. “Can’t find a better man” is not exactly a good message to send haha. When he was in LA, Dodger fans used to call him “Meat” so I think he should use “Meat Sandwich” by Gwar! i’m such an AB music nazi, lol…
jennifer,
It’s their last year in Vero Beach.
I’ve got a game post going on at Sliding Into Home if anyone is interested.
http://slidingintohome.blogspo.....house.html
They will have balckout restrictions too, but I know of a way around it if ever interested, if I recall you live in North Carolina.
lol @ Phillies announcer prouncing Veccionacci’s name like it’s Japanese. Bi-chi-o-na-chi.
Okay, the Phillies announcer is definately not Italian.
Shouldn’t it be Vek-ee-oh-nah-chi?
Dale: i’m not at work…
Nevermind. He’s not Italian. must be the most Italian sounding name for a non-Italian ever.
Jason/Yankee Bias,
Sorry didn’t see your post about your game thread… didn’t mean to step on toes.
Greg
1:15 tomorrow and we wil all be able to see Girardi in action on YES…if you have YES and the time to watch a ST game.
Dee: they haven’t shown girardi much, but when they did he looked nice and relaxed. i think he has to be pleased with what he’s seeing. jeter’s missplay on the basepath and woodward’s blooper were the only minor mistakes today
Mel
I left Maui in ‘92. Still have good friends living there. They complain of hour long traffic jams and the like.
My traffic story of the year was I got side swipped by an ox-cart!
In the third world internet is key.
I’ll be interested to see how Albaladejo looks…
Mets broadcast just showed Joe T. Surrounded by a bunch of other old men in cartoon blue. It looks weird.
he;s not italian rebecca? well whatever he is, they didn’t do a good job pronouncing it
Veccionacci is from Venezuela. Big season for him this year. He has to start translating his tools into results. The yanks have been waiting on that for a long time.
It’s most definitely an Italian name, but there are a lot of foreign names in South America.
Now I’ve confused myself. I’m flipping between a 2007 Yankees game, with Joe Torre as Yankee manager, and a 2008 Dodgers game, with Joe Torre as Dodgers manager.
Weeeeird.
dale d,
Cool. Never been to Maui myself, but I follow all the local players. Nicaragua, huh? Wow. Far out.
I dub Alba Jonathon Abba-Dabba.
alby looked good
Albaladejo looked very good! I think I’ma take him in the first round of the “who will make the bullpen out of ST” draft.
Good 1-2-3 inning by Albaladejo.
K swinging on a nasty slider and a K looking on a 3-2 count with nice movement.
OK mel Abba-Dabba looked good. especially that breaking ball for the strikeout
Dee,
Girardi’s there and as I mentioned they’re forced to sit in those collapsible chairs. Just put a freaking bench out there.
One funny thing though. They showed a ball girl sitting in one of those offensive chairs and she was workin on her tan.
BBB,
Remember the draft we had on who would be mentioned in the Mitchell Report? God, are we dorks or what?
Agreed, CB. If he doesn’t start showing some results this year, the organization’s attention is going to turn to Hilligoss, Suttle, Laird, etc.
“You said it mang. NOBODY EFFS WITH THE JESUS!”
yesssss
mel: at the Mets game, they’re sitting on those plastic white lawn chairs. Joe T and his old man posse look like they belong on a front porch in Brooklyn.
This game isn’t on tv, is it?
WOW Montero opposite-field HR!!
JEEEEEZ!!!
Jesus Christ!
jesus with the bomb!
Montero just went yard. Opposite field.
Jesus, maryandjoseph, that was wonderful.
Mel
I’ll go with abba dabba too. The warning track out had me cringing
Jesus hits a homer! Praise be to God
There’s another Yankees Classics on. I’m such a dork. I can hear the role call.
Oh, I’m getting antsy for live Yankee Baseball.
Mel: I remember, I didn’t get in on that one but that is where I got the idea to do the bullpen draft with my family, haha. We should do one here too…hooray for dorks!
PRAISE THE LORD JEZUSSSSSSSSSSSSSS !!!!!!!!!!!
Jesus Christ Future Superstar!
Say It: no, it’s just on MLB.tv for those lucky enough to subscribe.
Jackson walloped that ball. Future looks bright.
How long until some one puts the Jesus bomb on the web?
Thanks Mike. How did Wang look? Relaxed too?
Andrea, agree on the Torre double vision. It will take a while for me to get used to it, but I’m SO excited about Girardi. Can’t believe there still isn’t any #27 jersey for sale, it’s March and he’s been signed for months for crying out loud. I already saw Santana Mets jersey all over Modell’s weeks ago. Think I’ll go ahead and do one of those custom jerseys.
I’m SO excited about the game on YES tomorrow. Going grocery shopping for hot dogs and nachos.
never heard of this dude giese
Brandon you better trademark that before Sterling can get his hands on it,
We are going to have so much fun with these jesus jokes, aren’t we?
Good thing I’m Jewish.
wang was mostly very good. he left a couple of them up. and howard connected on one of them for a double
Uhh…did my eyes just play a trick on me or are they using Hooters Girls as ball girls down the lines?
Vader thanks for the heads up
It’s still very early, but Montero could be a very special player.
His hitting tools are otherworldly. Of all the prospects the yankees have he has, by far, the highest ceiling. Now guys like Tabata and Jackson are much further along, but for his age, Montero is in another class.
Whether he fulfills that potential is another matter. But the talent is immense.
If he can stick behind the plate he will be a unique player. Getting that kind of power production from behind the plate is an asset few teams can match.
This year’s low A Charleston team is going to be fantastic to follow. Montero, Betances, Zach MacCallister, the list goes on and on about the talent they will have.
But this year Montero is going to be the player to watch. We’ll get a sense of whether he can catch long term and how fast he may come. At this point settling on a position for him may be the thing that slows him down the most. His hitting approach is so advanced for his age. Position problems set back BJ Upton a year, maybe two.
Hopefully montero sorts that out this year. The good ones come fast and he could be on that track.
Peter:
I would like you to consider providing details of the game in lieu of leaving because clubhouse is open. I think a lot of people would prefer to hear about the play of the rookies more than how the regulars are feeling today. Just a suggestion.
Mel, LOL about the ball girl.
Nice catch Action Jackson!!
Nice shoestring catch by Austin Jackson.
Nice scoop by Jackson.
ACTION JACKSON
CB,
Thanks for the info. I thought I read that Montero’s size might be an issue for backstop? If he doesn’t settle there where do you see him playing? 1B?
what’s the score?
CB – in your opinion, do you see Montero staying behind the plate long-term? I know a lot of people have said he may end up at 1B because of his build. Obviously it’s early, but I’m curious about your gut feeling.
The possibility of Montero moving to 1b (tho I don’t know how big a possibility it is) is why I’d be hesitant about picking up Teixeira in FA. Jesus has too much potential to be blocked and besides Posada and possibly Damon will have to play some games at 1st down the line anyway. Plus, this team needs more Shelley Duncan, not less.
“I would like you to consider providing details of the game in lieu of leaving because clubhouse is open. I think a lot of people would prefer to hear about the play of the rookies more than how the regulars are feeling today. Just a suggestion.”
Pete has a job to do. He’s got to write a story and to do that he has to get to the club house to talk the players. He’s going to have to write up how Wang felt out on the mound. I don’t think the players stick around too long after spring training games. I’d guess the reason why they open the club house before the game is over so the veterans can leave quickly.
Rata – Good guys winning, 7-3
oops – mel and I thinking the same thing, but the melster is much quicker on the draw typing than I am.
I Want My WB!!!
this is such a better way of enjoying baseball than just listening or watching alone.
Anybody know of any way we can group chat in real time. What I mean is not haveing to refresh every play?
I’m on a V-Sat so I lag behind.
I have to admit to being very excited about the minor league players coming up
BBB : i completely agree with everything you said. as great a player as tex is, we just have too many older guys headed out to 1st let alone what we might have in shelley duncan.
i guess we’ll know a lot more on that by september
Rick Belles: it’s Pete’s job to write for the paper, which involves interviewing players. So while your suggestion is nice for the blog, I don’t think it would work for his actual job.
7-3.
In response to Montero and his catching abilities: look at Joe Mauer for the Twins. He’s no small fella.
thanks BBB
The Mets just won their first ST game by a walk-off HBP.
Well. This is a nice opening ST game for the Yankees.
and betemit crushes it
…so much for small ball.
I miss Flash. I feel bad that things haven’t worked out the way he wanted.
Betemit looks very good at he plate. Last year he flailed at the plate. Me thinks he’s been working with Kevin Long.
Betemit just hit a bomb. 9-3
Joe Torre should be ashamed of himself, how the hell you can’t score a run w/ that team vs the Mets junk ballers
Gordon hasn’t been the same since Mr. T abused him.
LOL Rebecca !!
Dale , you’re so right; it;s just great chatting away while we watch. it’s easier when its on the TV and you don’t have to shuffle between browser windows. especially on this laptop
BET !!!
BET !!!
dale d – I have a chat room on my forums. Anybody is welcome to come over there and chat during games or whenever else they like. Of course, they have to be registered on the forums, but that’s no big deal. I would like to get some live chats going during the games this season – it would be a lot of fun.
you’re right about mauer adam, but he did have a bunch of leg problems last year. they say he will move to first or outfield sooner rather than later.
wow what a catch by taguchi
What a catch by So. Too bad Robert Kelly was in the clubhouse.
Mike Eff: Fortunately I think Cash would agree with the 1b logic also. Everything he has done since 10/05 has been about giving the team more roster flexibility, so I can’t imagine him being in favor of giving Tex a long contract. Hopefully he (Cash) gets that extension!
It’s almost a shame cause I absolutely love Tex’s game, but with our current situation at 1b, it just doesn’t seem to me like he was meant to be a Yankee.
Guys,
I think that person was joking with Pete about staying and live-blogging. I mean he had to be, right? That had to be a joke.
Mike Eff
amazing how the worry now is FA players might block the up and comers already in the system. Very much a “new” Yankee philosophy.
I love this stuff !
Good move by the Phils to remove Flash mid-inning. With his age and fragility, and Lidge being out (and mentally weak even when healthy) they really can’t be too careful with him.
there is always a possibility that shelley could end up in right field if abreu leaves in 09
indeed dale, a new era. tex however is a really special player; i’d hate to pass on him.
it’s going to be a tough call either way. but i guess lets get this season in the books first
I’d be okay with getting a ring for the old mercenaries and then letting them go. Then have all the young kids fill the roster around Jeter, Alex, Mo, and Jorge. What better way to open the new stadium? Out with the old, in with the new.
RF belongs to Tabata don’t get in his way
(don’t have the game, sigh…)
I’ve also heard that Montero isn’t long for catcher.
About all the potential Jesus catchphrases–when I was in Nepal, there were lots of little airlines offering flyover tours of Everest. One was called Buddha Air. Doesn’t it seem like that should be the safest and most peaceful flight? If there was Jesus Air, what would the competition be like? Could you imagine the marketing?
sounds like a plan Mel!!
i know it doesn’t matter, but boston has caught up with the twins. i just love to see them lose. dang
Well this game is pretty much in the book.
one pitch, one out
Mike,
HaHa! Wouldn’t that make Gammons roll in his grave. Wait, he’s not dead.
Ollie’s in. Let’s see that sinker.
he may not be dead, but he’s certainly preserved, if you know what i mean…
Crowd got that last pitch right.
I’m so jealous! I wish I could see Ohlendorf!
Great game
ollie looked good. great game…
aaand that’s the ballgame. Very nice showings from Alby, WB and Jesus today…and of course Shelley is a beast!
Fun chatting with you guys today, enjoy the rest of your Staurday everyone!
HaHa. Betemit throwing off balance ala Jeter. It was ugly but got the out.
yes, you too BBB
loved that throw by wilson Mel…
Where Montero winds up playing really is a central issue for the organization as a whole.
I know that may sound crazy given that he’s only 18 and hasn’t played above Gulf Coast rookie ball. But a lot of dominoes fall from what happens to Montero (Romine, weems, cerevelli, even a miranda possibly)
He’s the highest upside guy in the system and the yankees will wind up moving other players and change the development program for those players depending on what happens with Montero.
I don’t think anyone knows where he’ll end up playing but a few thoughts:
The yankees are going to do everything possible to keep him behind the plate. Everything. Montero has 80 power. The number of catching prospects who have ever had that type of power is very, very small. The value Montero represents over the replacement level catcher most teams will have is enormous.
If he fulfills even 80% of his potential behind the plate, he would potentially contribute more wins to the yankees than any other postion player on the team. He would be so much better hitting than nearly all other catchers he would be a very unique player. Even Matt Wieters, who’s considered the best catching prospect in baseball (and is a great prospect) doesn’t have 80 power. Now, I’m not saying Montero will be the overall hitter Wieters is, but his power is unique.
For those reasons he is much more valuable to the yankees behind the plate than any other position. You can find a Texeira type on the free agent market to play first. You won’t be able to find a Montero type on the market to play behind the plate. So his value as a catcher is very big.
His size is a major issue. If he gets much larger then it becomes less likely he sticks. But we just have to see. He’s already 6′3 so hopefully he’s done getting taller.
At the same time some of the thinking about catchers and size has been changing. This issue came up big time with Joe Mauer who is 6′5. Wieters is around 6′5 also if i remember correctly. With Mauer it’s worked out great. So I think people are less prone to just rule out a prospect catching long term because of size.
Baseball America was pretty down on Montero as defensive catcher. They do not profile him to catch long term. They think he’s going to be at 1b.
I think it’s too early to just give up on him as a defensive player. He wasn’t very good at throwing guys out last season, but that’s not unusual for a young catcher. He may never be great behind the plate – but he doesn’t need to with that bat. He only needs to be passable.
The yankees will do everything to develop him as a catcher – his value is so enormous at that position. I think this is a major test of the organization’s position player development (assuming he doesn’t grow to like 6′6 280 or something).
If it’s just a matter of teaching him footwork, throwing mechanics, etc and not size then it’s going to largely depend on coaching and development.
The yanks have done amazing things with developing pitchers. People forget but coming out of college Joba had a very good fastball but it was in the 92-94 range. It was Nardi conteras who worked on Joba’s mechanics and literally added 4-6 mph on his fastball.
They need that same kind of strong develpment to keep montero behind the plate.
Mike Eff,
Don’t tell anyone, because that’s how rumors spread, but I heard he gets his HGH from the Red Sox towel boy.
Mel we’ll keep it between you and me
In case you missed the late innings, I live blog of the entire game can be found here:
http://mybaseballbias.com/2008.....-phillies/
ok no one hate me, but you know who I miss?
Wil Nieves…
Andrea – why?
Fran: He was always happy and glad to be there!
And I’m watching the Yankee Classics from April 19, and he caught Rasner that game. I realize Molina is a vastly better catcher than Nieves, but he was such a fun guy. I wish he could stick around as like, a cheerleader or something.
Will da no thrill has a groupie ?
Will da no thrill has a groupie ?
Baseball America has virtually no insight at all into the Yanks.
Brandon: he sure does! I even have a Wil Nieves tshirt!
:blank: ……………….
Andrea – I agree. He was happy to be there and supposedly an all around good guy. But he really was not very good offensively or defensively. Jose Molina is a huge upgrade at back-up catcher.
Is Nieves on another team?
Brandon: there was a game v. the Angels in May that Wil Nieves was 2 for 2 with a walk, or something, an had 2 RBI. And those 2 RBI were the only 2 runs scored in the game. My friend (from France. So I guess she had an excuse and didn’t know any better) and I decided that day to start the Wil Nieves fan club. We got some of the people in the seats around us to join in!
Fran: Molina’s with the Nationals. I think he’s got a minor league contract with them. He and T-Clip can keep each other company. And Colter Bean I guess.
I wasn’t denying that Molina’s an upgrade. He’s DEFINITELY an upgrade. I just miss Wil’s attitude. I am watching this game, and they showed up, and I just missed him a little. He’s just so small and happy!
Fran: I meant Nieves. Nieves is with the Nationals.
………
j/k well I think he’s in Scranton but I could be wrong. He calls a good game but everything else ehh actually I wouldn’t be surprised if a NL team picks him up.
“Baseball America has virtually no insight at all into the Yanks.”
They ranked Phil Hughes as the best pitching prospect in baseball last season and ranked Joba as the best pitching prospect in baseball this season.
John Manuel one of their top editors also said Chamberlain was the best pitching prospect he’s seen since joining BA – better than Josh Becket and Mark Prior.
BA also had 4 yankees amongst their top 50 prospects this year.
If you want to complain about Alan Horne, fine. Or that they’re biased for the Sox, well ok.
But they do a very good job over there with prospects.
jesus montero 1-1 with a homerun – great start for him. Im excited to see what montero will do this spring along with a number of other guys who havent really played with the major league club.
can some tell me what are they planning for joba? Is he going to start the season as a starter and convert to relief or vice-versa? At some point, he should def be a starter or its a real waste of one of the best arms on the team.
