  8. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex") March 1st, 2008 at 4:47 pm

Shelley you sound like you slacked off running, Joe will see this

  9. CB March 1st, 2008 at 4:50 pm

Shelley came close to being a minor league free agent last year. If they hadn’t brought him up and put him on the 40 man roster he would have been able to leave the organization.

His father was already planning on that when the yankees didn’t bring him up when he started the season out so hot.

Fortunate thing that they wound up taking a chance on him.

He’s done nothing short of what they’ve asked him to do.

I hope he gets regular playing time this year at first/ DH.

At least Igawa doesn’t have the worst Spring Training ERA.

  14. MikeEff - Shelley at First March 1st, 2008 at 5:02 pm

    i like Zito’s 108.00 ERA Poor Guy.

makes I gawa Iook good. well i exaggerate.

  15. CB March 1st, 2008 at 5:06 pm

“makes I gawa Iook good. well i exaggerate.”

Igawa was only a waste of $46 million!

  16. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! March 1st, 2008 at 5:08 pm

Okay I know pitchers are trying to get their stuff together. But something is really wrong with Barry.

  17. Kat March 1st, 2008 at 5:11 pm

He gave up 8 runs in .2 innings? How is that possible??

  18. Rich March 1st, 2008 at 5:12 pm

CB – Yes, but at least he isn’t a waste of $127 million. Zito is.

  19. SJ44 March 1st, 2008 at 5:12 pm

Again, another example as to why buying pitching is a crapshoot.

128 million dollars for an under 30 year old starter. He has stunk with the Giants.

All the warning signs were there with Zito and the Giants still overpaid. Amazing.

The smart teams are developing their own starting pitching (so they get the first and often best 800-1000 innings from the pitcher) supplement it with some bullpen help from the outside, and go from there.

Its so easy to get caught up in the hype and, “We MUST have this guy or that guy”.

Every pitcher who has signed a 90+ million dollar contract has not held up. Not from an injury standpoint and not from a performance standpoint.

No one guy, who only plays once every 5 days, is worth it. The Giants are learning that painful lesson as we speak.

Many years ago, I had a hamster named Zito.

“Many years ago, I had a hamster named Zito.”

my favorite comment of the week

  22. MikeEff - Shelley at First March 1st, 2008 at 5:17 pm

and Zito was supposed to flourish. remember he was going over to the “easy” NL

sound a little familiar? lets see what happens in Queens over the next 3 years…

  23. CB March 1st, 2008 at 5:21 pm

Long term contracts always seem like a good idea to the team before hand but then reality sets in.

The Giants are finally starting to rebuild after denying the need to do so for years.

But Zito is only going to be a bigger albatross around their neck as the years go on. He still has 6 years on that contract! So during a good chunk of Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain’s careers Zito will also be there as a $20 million dollar waste year after year.

It’s amazing but year after year teams do it. C.C. Sabbathia is the next guy this coming on the market this year. He’s going to want 7 yrs $140 million and someone will magically give it to him despite his enormous size and poor conditioning.

We’re very fortunate the yankees decided to focus the organization on young pitching when they did. Without this pipeline of talent this team would be an old club with mediocre free agent pitching and limited flexibility going forward.

  24. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 1st, 2008 at 5:21 pm

MikeEff: On that note, I’m curious to see what Willis does in the AL.

Is it me or do NL pitchers have an easier time adjusting to AL? Why is this, given that the AL is usually considered the better league?

  25. MikeEff - Shelley at First March 1st, 2008 at 5:24 pm

well you are right about beckett adjusting to the Al for sure. there are others of course as well.

the thing about dontrelle is that his numbers have been declining for three years. i’m sure he’s bummed to be on a losing team, but 3 years is a large sample size.

    i hope he bombs..

  26. MikeEff - Shelley at First March 1st, 2008 at 5:25 pm

i know Yahoo has pictures of the games, but do any of you know of other sites with good game day pix?

  27. Phil Hughes is Saved! March 1st, 2008 at 5:25 pm

    Whoa Zito. Yikes!

“He gave up 8 runs in .2 innings? How is that possible??”

reminds me of a young Tom Glavine…o wait, no, that reminds me of the last game glavine pitched…but he only lasted .1 innings

“makes I gawa Iook good. well i exaggerate.”

There’s no exaggerating in Baseball!!!! :)

Many years ago, I had a hamster named Zito.

Poor hamster…..did it run away? lol

  31. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 1st, 2008 at 5:52 pm

Mark Alan: No, but there was one in Britain the other day.

  32. MikeEff - Shelley at First March 1st, 2008 at 5:55 pm

yeah, wasn’t that strange to hear of an earthquake in England?

  33. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 1st, 2008 at 5:59 pm

MikeEff: The reactions were kind of funny. They went something like:

Friends in England: OMFG THE EARTH MOVED

    Friends in California: Shuddup newbies.

  34. MikeEff - Shelley at First March 1st, 2008 at 6:02 pm

    LOL

i’m off to make phone calls to people in Texas for Barack Obama!!

    wish me luck!

PS if any of you are interested in helping out check out barackobama.com

  35. Bronxbyte March 1st, 2008 at 6:26 pm

They’ll always be teams that believe a marquee, high-dollar pitcher will be the difference maker and make the move to sign him with the hope that his numbers haven’t peaked out.

  36. Mark Alan March 1st, 2008 at 8:37 pm

Will the Barack Obama fellow be any help in the bullpen? For the purposes of this blog, that is probably still the main concern.

Make him a late non-roster invitee, see what he can do. The other guy, Mariano Rivera, is a little old and experienced, after all. Maybe it’s time for change.
