Live-blogging the Phillies-Yanks game

Welcome to Legends Field. There’s not a cloud in the sky, it’s 76 degrees and it’ll be Andy Pettitte against Cole Hamels.

George Steinbrenner, who has been around a lot this spring, is watching the game from outside his suite. Big Stein looks pretty good.

1:16 and we’re underway. Jimmy Rollins pops to second on the second pitch.

Here’s the Philly lineup:
Rollins 6
Werth 8
Utley 4
Burrell 7
Feliz 5
Pascucci DH
Taguchi 9
King 3
Coste 2

Werth walks on a full-count fastball that was up.

This game is on YES and WCBS, by the way. But feel free to chime in here if you’re watching from home.

Utley 6-4-3. Just what Pettitte wanted.

MIDDLE OF THE FIRST
Another big crowd here at soon-to-be-Steinbrenner Field. The Yankees are in their pinstripes and the Phillies in their BP jerseys, which look like softball uniforms.

I hear from sources that Anthony McCarron of The Daily News is live-blogging this game as well. Two things on that: McCarron is just showing off for his wife and adorable daughter, who are down in Florida with him. Plus the bum is about to leave on a 10-day vacation. What kind of baseball writer gets a vacation in March?

As for the bottom of the first:

Damon: grounds to second
Jeter: flies to left
Abreu: singles to right and steals second
A-Rod: walks
Giambi: A bomb to right field deep into the new patio deck. 3-0 Yankees.
Posada: grounds to third

TOP OF THE FIRST
Burrell: Grounds to second.
Feliz: Singles then is picked off by Pettitte. Giambi chased him down.
Pascucci: Strikes out looking.

That should be it for Andy Pettitte: 2 1 0 0 1 1

BOTTOM OF THE SECOND
Cano: Grounds to second
Lane: Homer to left. 4-0 Yankees.
Cabrera: Walks
Damon: K
Jeter: K

TOP OF THE THIRD
Steven White now pitching for the Yankees

So Taguchi, Brennan King and Chris Coste had singles to cut the lead the lead to 4-1. White then got Rollins to ground into a 4-6-3 double play. Werth then flew to center.

BOTTOM OF THE THIRD
Fabio “I’m not Fidel” Castro pitching for the Phillies.

Abreu: hard single into right
A-Rod: Fly to center
Giambi: ropes an opposite-field double to the gap in left. Abreu scores. 5-1 Yankees.
Posada: Flies to left
Cano: Strikes out.

TOP OF THE FOURTH

Utley: Singles
Burrell: walks
Feliz: Fielder’s choice to short, Burrell out at second, Utley to third.
Pascucci: Walks to load the bases.
Taguchi: Grounds over the third-base bag. Nice play by A-Rod to throw the runner out at first as a run scores.
King: Sharp grounder that eats up A-Rod and goes into left as two runs score.

5-4 Yankees. Steven White is finished and Scott Patterson is coming in to pitch.

Clubhouse time. Pettitte is available. We’ve played 4 and the Yankees lead 6-4.

  6. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 2nd, 2008 at 1:21 pm

…It’s not a Pettitte start without a DP. And I should stop hogging the comments, I know.

  9. EY March 2nd, 2008 at 1:24 pm

Surprisingly, it’s actually sunny here in midstate New York…but the temperature outside is still freezing.

Unfortunately, I am at a friend’s place and he has no cable! What sort of blasphemy is that. I want to watch Yankees baseball…

  10. yanks61 March 2nd, 2008 at 1:25 pm

Has anybody seen anything lately from Green Beret7? I don’t remember seeing anything for quite a while.

GB7, if you’re out there, I hope that you’re doing better. I know that you’ve been ill and just wanted to let you know that I miss your posts. Keep fighting the good fight, sir!

  11. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 2nd, 2008 at 1:26 pm

Last time I made a comment about it being sunny in Syracuse I was rewarded with about six inches of snow in the next hour.

Thus, my lips are sealed. :-x

OK, so today I’m the SOL one who isn’t getting this game on TV, can’t figure out how to find it on radio & can’t find my MLB Audio password from last year (I’m a bit hung over too, which isn’t helping haha.) Anyway….what’s happening?! Giambino homer?? What’s the score?

  31. EY March 2nd, 2008 at 1:35 pm

  88. BBB March 2nd, 2008 at 1:57 pm

So for those watching how bad is White missing spots when he misses? Sterling is no good whatsoever for providing that kind of information. I still vote that the USF commentators should get his job!

  89. Andrea March 2nd, 2008 at 1:57 pm

That’s why we love Melky :)

  90. CB March 2nd, 2008 at 1:57 pm

I think Veras is the guy to watch in this game.

Question on him is his command. Specifically, was his poor command last year due to his recent TJ surgery or is it something that’s not going to dramatically improve as time goes on from his surgery? His command in the minors was mixed before his surgery though it looked like it had settled down in 2006 before going under the knife.

He has strong stuff and of all the candidates for the pen may have the best raw stuff.

If he can throw strikes they will be a long way towards having a decent relief corp.

  91. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex") March 2nd, 2008 at 1:58 pm

    MELKYYYYYYYYYY :D

  92. Jim PA March 2nd, 2008 at 1:58 pm

  97. Andrea March 2nd, 2008 at 2:00 pm

His name is Fabio. That’s fantastic.

  98. CB March 2nd, 2008 at 2:01 pm

Steve White has been in the system a long time (He’s 27). The hope for him has always been around his velocity. He has a good fastball (92-94 ish) and they’ve been waiting for him to add complementary pitches.

Last year was the year they were hoping he was going to take a step forward but he go hurt.

He’s so far down the depth chart of arms now I think his window has closed. His future in the majors is probably relief. But that future may not be with the yankees.

He’ll start the season in the scranton rotation.

  99. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 2nd, 2008 at 2:01 pm

    Steve White in trouble again.

  126. LibertyBelle March 2nd, 2008 at 2:16 pm

Ok,the Santa-booing story is old and needs to go! Basically, it was some skinny guy dressed up in a Santa suit that they brought down to the field at an Eagles game (not at the Linc or the Vet… the one before- Franklin Field?). There’s an element of Philly fans that I can’t stand (the type of fans who treated Abreu like crap, basically, and wouldn’t know a good baseball player if he hit them upside the head), but we’re not all bad.

  127. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 2nd, 2008 at 2:16 pm

did any of you guys just lose the game?

I don’t mind Phillies fans except the ones that booed Abreu mercilessly (I once went to a doubleheader where he hit a walkoff HR in the first game, and they were booing him again by his 2nd AB in game 2!) and the ones that blame the players for the FO’s bad moves.

Mike: Yeah, two bad throws from Cano today. Hopefully he is shaking off all the rust now! Thankfully he still has Jeter to keep him in line, but I know he is missing Bowa.

Except for last year, of course, the Phillies had not won anything in a long time. Fans are frustrated, but they end up laying blame on the wrong people. The treatment of Abreu by a lot of people was just wrong. I don’t doubt your story for a second. He definitely had his fans, though (and some even followed him).

    Giambino’s arms look huge.

  178. CB March 2nd, 2008 at 2:38 pm

Signing Lane to a minor league deal was a good move for depth. They also actually need outfielders to fill in the Scranton roster, especially a veteran.

Lane got 171 AB last year in the NL and hit .171 with a .599 OPS. He’s a career .241 hitter. His last good year was 2005.

The optimal thing for the bench is if Betemit shows that the weight he’s lost he can be an effective backup middle infielder and Shelley and Ensberg lock down spots.

That would give them many more options against left handed pitching.

  221. CB March 2nd, 2008 at 2:53 pm

Hawkins said that last year he basically changed his entire approach towards pitching becoming a sinker ball centered pitcher.

Hopefully its true that he’s a different pitcher compared to last time he was in the AL east with Baltimore.

3 ground ball outs are a good sign.

Same old Farnsy of course. Susan Waldeman just went on with this 30 second speech about how it was a whole new Farnsy, better attitude and how Joe Girardi believes in him, etc, etc.

The notion that Farnsy is going to be a different pitcher because Girardi is here is nonsense. The things this organization says in order to get something out of Farnsworth is unbelievable.

Walk year of his contract – I’d buy it. But implicitly blaming Torre for Farnsworth is absurd.

    Jennifer,

Take this for whats its worth. (meaning some people may not believe it, but oh well.) Last June, My girlfriend at the time and her roommate were at Park in NYC and her roommate met a nice fellow by the name of Tyler Clippard. Tyler was there with Shelley, Ian, Joba and Phil. She said that Tyler said that Shelley, Ian, Joba and Phil had formed their own little Clique and that he felt uncomfortable around them.

I know some of them were in the minors at the time, but I guess they were in the city for something.

Again, take it for what its worth. I didnt believe it at first either, but these girls wouldnt know Derek Jeter if he tapped them on their shoulders. Then she started spouting off all these prospect names. Also, she had many pictures of her and Tyler from that night. So I started to beloieve it. Hope this answers and questions about their friendships.

I don’t remember anyone brining up politics except for G. Franco.

I did see Rebecca and I mention the Yes/Fox marriage during ball games suck.

Franco then asks that we stop brining up politics, when it was he, hmself that brought them up.

I can’t wait for the Red Sox to overpay for Manny in 7 months.

  268. Sean Serritella Yankees Daily March 2nd, 2008 at 3:15 pm

The thing is Rebecca, the Yankees need a left hander. I don’t understand why they don’t invest more into left handers with the short right field porch. I think their next 5 draft choices should be all lefty pitchers.

  269. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 2nd, 2008 at 3:15 pm

  273. Dee March 2nd, 2008 at 3:17 pm

Jennifer and CB, thanks for the info.

We’d better score some runs here. Even though it’s still only ST, would hate to see the BP giving up the lead again.

I’m just going to assume this is a joke. There’s no way in hell the Yankees should draft based on what hand a pitcher throws with. Hughes/Chamberlain/Kennedy are all right handed and all pretty good I think.

  280. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 2nd, 2008 at 3:24 pm

  284. mel March 2nd, 2008 at 3:25 pm

Henry set up the perfect opportunity for Hank to fix the damage. Hank should say that he’s humbled by the honor. And then add he’s always wanted to be president and looks forward to running in the next Red Sox Nation election.

  285. BBB March 2nd, 2008 at 3:26 pm

I too am rooting for Traber to make it as the situational lefty. Don’t remember who it was, but someone here referenced very interesting stats yesterday, that his below avg career numbers are a result of facing way more righties than lefties. His numbers vs LHBs have actually been pretty respectable.

What I wonder is, why has it not yet occurred to anyone to use him as a lefty specialist?

  286. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 2nd, 2008 at 3:27 pm

  292. Skippy March 2nd, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Rebecca: Sterling is all about the timing. That’s his bizarre genius.

I understand everyone would like to see a lefty in the bullpen, but bringing along a bad one just for the sake of having one won’t help. I’m guessing they’d like to draft some, but they must just be hard to find right now. I imagine that in the draft it would be hard to pass on a right-handed sure thing for a left-handed project.

Good heavens, Bruney is a wraith! He must be wearing last year’s uniform!

last year he was a fatty mcgee face. This year, though he still can’t pitch, atleast hes healthy.

  301. BBB March 2nd, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Yeah that was a nice pitch by Bruney before for the K. For those watching, how close was that last hit to being caught in center? Cause if Melky could have caught it, I’ll just consider it an out :)

Sterling saying Billy Wagner threw a tantrum when a college hitter tried to bunt on him…haha I hate Wagner, I hope he finishes this season with a 72.43 ERA!

  317. Doreen March 2nd, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Was out and just turned the game on. Bruney looks physically awesome — I am impressed with how much better he looks in that regard. I didn’t see anything before the bloop hit, which was not a well hit ball. Was he just rusty?

  318. BBB March 2nd, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Andrea: He (Wagner) also talked a lot of smack about El Duque over the offseason. Saying Duque is too old to hold up in the rotation & should be put in the bullpen. Maybe he should worry less about what El Duque the 4-time champ is doing and more about all those saves he blew in August & Sept!

  319. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! March 2nd, 2008 at 3:46 pm

haha some kids are chanting we want Joba.

  320. CB March 2nd, 2008 at 3:47 pm

It’s hard to believe Bruney was implying that he got sent down last year because of the way Torre used the bull pen.

Bruney, Henn, Farnsworth just can’t throw strikes.

Farnsworth on top of that basically handicaps them because he says he doesn’t like to throw back to back games. That puts a lot of stress on the rest of the pen to make up for that.

With Joba being used in the pen by the Joba rules and Farnsworth limited usability there’s a lot the rest of the pen has to make up for.

Wasting a pull pen spot on Farnsworth for yet another year will hurt this team a lot given the innings cap joba, phil and ian have.

  321. BBB March 2nd, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Ha! Now Christian is getting the lucky bloops instead of having them drop in in front of him!

Today was “Hot Laptop Day” in Fort Myers for the Twins vs. the Socks.
Buchholz had a lousy outing ….

  325. Guiseppe Franco March 2nd, 2008 at 3:53 pm

    Exactly, CB.

Torre was looking for ANYONE to throw strikes and get hitters out. For Bruney to essentially blame him for his ineffectiveness is laughable.

The lack of quality arms in the pen was the lone reason why Joba got his opportunity last year.

The shift in philosophy to bring in as many kids as possible to compete for pen roles is the right one. Unlike Farnsworth, the kids can be moved in place of another if they don’t work out.

I think we’re going to see more kids in these roles over the next few years because signing free agents to big money has been a dismal failure in recent years.

  326. thenextandykosco March 2nd, 2008 at 3:55 pm

I wonder if anyone else thinks that the Yankees will likely announce the first reassignments from the major league camp within the next day or so. Catchers tend to disproportionately populate the first round of cuts, because Jared Greenwood cannot possibly alone catch all of the pitchers expected to be in the minor league camp. Therefore, if I had to guess, maybe Anson, Romine, and either Montero or Cervelli (depending upon the condition of his hand) might depart for the minor league camp. For pitchers, maybe Melancon at this point. Possible infield cut? If I had to guess, it would be Nunez. Whoever is cut, we can hope to see all of them with caps with the interlocking N and Y next spring, if not sooner.

  327. BBB March 2nd, 2008 at 3:56 pm

Well I won’t get too excited b/c he is only facing minor leaguers, but that was a nice inning from Veras. Mo thinks he has the most potential of all the relievers that have been sporadically called up/sent down in the past few years…

Lol, Torre’s Green Tea commerical still representin’ on WCBS…

  328. Doreen March 2nd, 2008 at 3:56 pm

Do they go extra innings in ST?

  329. CB March 2nd, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Albaladejo and Hawkins both throw strikes. I’d guess that was strong motivation for bringing them in. They have enough of these throw hard and straight and no control relief pitchers.

Albaladejo’s control is really outstanding. Hawkins also.

Veras was facing minor leaguers but it was still a good inning for him.

He has major league stuff – two plus pitches. He’s got the ability to get people out. With him it is completely going to be an issue of throwing strikes.

If he can throw strikes he can be their 8th inning set up guy. His stuff is good enough if he gets if over the plate.
