  2. Raya March 3rd, 2008 at 9:15 am

I thought duncan was sent to minor league camp?

  3. Ross March 3rd, 2008 at 9:19 am

Between Lane and Ensberg we’re going to have a great bench of former Astros.

  4. steve March 3rd, 2008 at 9:19 am

eric duncan was sent to minor league camp. shelly duncan is at DH today

  5. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge March 3rd, 2008 at 9:20 am

Eric Duncan was. Shelley Duncan is likley going north with the team.

  6. whozat March 3rd, 2008 at 9:20 am

Eric Duncan was. Shelley Duncan wasn’t :-)

  7. whozat March 3rd, 2008 at 9:22 am

Hey, guys…I think Eric Duncan was sent down, but Shelley Duncan is still with the team. Is that true? Can someone clear that up for me? I’m not really certain if that’s what happened. Maybe someone could post about whether Eric Duncan is with the team, and what happened to Shelley Duncan?

    ;-)

  8. steve March 3rd, 2008 at 9:24 am

    wow..tool

  9. Brian March 3rd, 2008 at 9:32 am

now i’m not POSITIVE, but i’m pretty sure that Eric Duncan was sent down and Shelley Duncan is playing DH today.

yeah ok i took it too far.

  10. painttheblack23 March 3rd, 2008 at 9:33 am

This is the game that I wish was on YES instead of yesterdays game. Would have been nice to see Jackson, McCutchen and Melancon…………….

  11. DMan March 3rd, 2008 at 9:35 am

I’m interested to see how Edwar does today.

  12. Bronxbyte March 3rd, 2008 at 9:36 am

It’s good to see that Mark Melancon will get an inning today.
Many feel that he’ll be very valuable in July as he builds up his arm strength.

  13. DMan March 3rd, 2008 at 9:37 am

I also hope we see Moose go three innings…

  14. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge March 3rd, 2008 at 9:39 am

The comments got stuck that is why it is posted like 10 times.

Anyone know if I can listen to the game on the web or if xm now allows you to sign in and listen on the net?

  15. Drew March 3rd, 2008 at 9:48 am

I hope you found Kissimmee. We went there for a game in 2000. Mapquest sent us in the wrong direction, to a housing complex that was being built.

Yes, I am man enough to ask for directions, which is what we had to do. El Duque started against Doc Gooden, who was trying to make the Astros at the time.

    Good times, good times.

  16. pat March 3rd, 2008 at 9:54 am

    jennifer

This is the link for Astros radio broadcasts

    http://www.790kbme.com/main.html#

They have live streaming so it should be on there.

  17. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge March 3rd, 2008 at 9:54 am

At least you didn’t have tom tom turn you onto a rail crossing and do it. I actually heard someone followed what he said and did it.

  18. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge March 3rd, 2008 at 9:58 am

Thanks pat, hopefully they wills stream on line.

  20. Patrick March 3rd, 2008 at 9:59 am

Jennifer – Like in The Office when Michael turns right and drives his car into a lake when the Nav tells him to bear right?

  21. Buddy Biancalana March 3rd, 2008 at 10:04 am

    whozat-

Eric Duncan was sent down or rather across the street.

  22. Y's Guy March 3rd, 2008 at 10:06 am

jennifer i dont think its going to be that easy. teams dont webcast thier game broadcasts (they’re not allowed to) and xm also doesnt run its baseball games online. mlb.com has exlusivity im prett sure.

  23. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge March 3rd, 2008 at 10:07 am

:( too bad. I wish xm would replay the games at least.

I’ve never seen the office, I’ll have to check it out.

  24. Y's Guy March 3rd, 2008 at 10:08 am

im thinking the reason karstens and moose are throwing on the same day is that jeff is the backup plan in case mike shows his august form in ST. I’m hoping they both do well and karstens gets the long relief job.

  25. whozat March 3rd, 2008 at 10:09 am

“Eric Duncan was sent down or rather across the street.”

Yeah, I know. There were three posts all saying that (one of them mine!) and I was just making a little joke about that :-)

  26. vinny-b March 3rd, 2008 at 10:10 am

yes. I like xbox. However, prefer to play MLB 08 on ps2, rather then 2k8 on 360.

  27. desiyankee March 3rd, 2008 at 10:10 am

So that Sprint Modem is being put to good use eh PETE?

  28. Y's Guy March 3rd, 2008 at 10:11 am

if u have an xm reciever im pretty sure its on. they should be running the houston broadcast. im listening to xm on my comp now so i cant get xm 75 home plate or id check it for you.

  29. steve March 3rd, 2008 at 10:12 am

I’m sorry, but MVP 2005 is still the greatest baseball game ever made

  30. MikeEff - Shelley at First March 3rd, 2008 at 10:13 am

nothing happned to shelley; eric duncan was sent doen.

SJ, i woke up late, but i loved how you laid it our for those guys.

why…why do red sox fans feel the need to come to a yankee blog and try to prove that their team is better. why is it that they still have an inferiority complex? yankee fans don’t troll their blogs; we don’t sit around obsessing over their players. they can’t even brag that they beat us last year as we beat them head to head. it would have been even more decisive had our rotation been close to intact early on. let them go shoot their mouth off at an indians or rockies blog ( if there are any)

  31. painttheblack23 March 3rd, 2008 at 10:15 am

Jeff Karstens is garbage. It will be a shame if he makes the roster and takes a spot away from a young guy who actually has some potential.

  32. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge March 3rd, 2008 at 10:19 am

Yeah I don’t get the sox fans coming on here. I certainly don’t go on any red sox blogs. I could care less about them. I am concerned about my team and how they will do.

  33. matt March 3rd, 2008 at 10:21 am

Hey peter I hope you can watch Melancon closely and let us know how he looked today

  34. DMan March 3rd, 2008 at 10:21 am

    painttheblack23-

Karstens is a young guy.. Hes only 25.. And he definitly has some potential.. He pitched well his first time out this Spring, and he dominated for team USA over the winter.

  35. Y's Guy March 3rd, 2008 at 10:25 am

karstens pitched quite well in 06 and last fall. He is still young but probably on his last go-round as horne, white and others are about to pass him by. Yanks cant put any of thier younger starters into the long relief role (which will help alot on innings limits), so karstens (or rasner) are the naturals for that spot. im hoping moose grabs the rotation spot and jeff does well when needed and hope hes not needed very much.

  36. stef March 3rd, 2008 at 10:27 am

Jennifer — I think you mean you couldn’t care less about those Red Sox! ;)

  37. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge March 3rd, 2008 at 10:30 am

stef I always get those confused.

  38. painttheblack23 March 3rd, 2008 at 10:31 am

Dman, I know all about Karstens and realize he’s somewhat of a young guy. That’s why I said it would be a shame if he took a spot away from a young guy with potential. He has no potential. He is what he is…mediocre, if that.
“Pitched well this spring and dominated in the winter”….all that is is a small sample size warning.

  39. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 3rd, 2008 at 10:32 am

Won’t get a chance to catch today’s game so I’m sending waves of optimism, hoping everyone pitches/plays well!

  40. Y's Guy March 3rd, 2008 at 10:33 am

so paintheblack, who do you want to see in long relief?

  41. painttheblack23 March 3rd, 2008 at 10:34 am

I prefer Rasner over Karstens. At least he knows how to keep his fastball low and has a decent curve.

  42. Wolf In Pinstripes March 3rd, 2008 at 10:34 am

“Hey, I’m blogging from the car (no, I’m not driving)”

That was funnier than anything I saw in the comics section of the paper this morning. :D

  43. MikeEff - Shelley at First March 3rd, 2008 at 10:35 am

have a good day today rebecca…we’ll miss you

  44. TurnTwo March 3rd, 2008 at 10:36 am

Karstens provides exactly what you need from a long-relief type pitcher… can come into a game, work quickly and efficiently, and most importantly eat innings for your main bullpen guys and THROW STRIKES!

you dont need upside from a long relief guy.

guys with upside, like for example Marquez or Horne, right now should remain in the AAA rotation until they are ready or needed for the MLB rotation, or show they can not handle the rotation at an upper level in the system.

  45. SJ44 March 3rd, 2008 at 10:36 am

Yeah, let’s declare somebody is “garbage” before they even throw a pitch this year.

Why should Girardi use a guy who may be able to help him this year? That would be “crazy”, wouldn’t it?

Spring training is for trying guys out in various roles. the Yankees need a long guy. If Jeff Karstans can win that job, how is that a bad thing?

    Mike,

Its something I never understand. I have never gone on SOSH in my life and have no desire to so.

If I did, I especially wouldn’t couch it in some passive-aggressive tone to get conversation going.

This whole, “our team is better than your team” is just nonsense.

You wanna talk baseball? Fine by me. You wanna spout nonsense, then you are going to get called on it.

I have a lot of respect for the Red Sox. After decades of falling over themselves, they seem to finally have it going in the right direction.

That makes the rivalry even better. It does NOT put the Yankees in the rearview mirror.

For years, despite the cries of Red Sox fans, this WASN’T a rivalry. It was the hammer (the Yankees) to the nail (the Red Sox).

When the Red Sox finally won in 2004, THEN it became a rivalry. Can’t have a rivalry until you win.

Since then, its been pretty much even.

This Yankee team, if it can stay healthy, is going to be more versatile and deeper than any Yankee team since the Dynasty Years.

Girardi is also a guy who will force the action. Something that has been needed here for years.

Folks forget, the Yankees won the last 4 head to head series with the Red Sox last year. Coincidently, it was after the team finally got healthy and in shape.

If not for the bugs, it would have been a helluva ALCS between the two teams.

Now, the Sox don’t have Schilling. That’s a big loss. Say what you will about Schilling but, the guy is a money pitcher. They are going to miss him, bigtime. The Yankees have their 3 young guys for a full season, with the possibility of one or two more young arms on the staff the second half of the season. Plus, they are a fitter and hungrier team.

For a lot of reasons. Not the least of which is, you have a number of guys on the last years of their contracts. Always a good motivator these days in baseball.

Its going to be a great race. Can’t wait for it to begin.

  46. MikeEff - Shelley at First March 3rd, 2008 at 10:37 am

you prefer rasner after watching him the other day? why don’t you at least watch karstens for one day this year before condemning him.

  47. stef March 3rd, 2008 at 10:37 am

Jennifer, I grew up saying it wrong until someone pointed it out to me. It just sounds more emphatic to say it the WRONG way, know what I mean?

Anyway, down with the Red Sox. I do check out Boston.com, though, to see what the enemy is thinking occasionally. They have a couple of good columnists at the Globe I like to read. But the fans? Most of the time, they’re just whining about how life is unfair to them, and how the Yankees suck. Bla. I would NEVER waste my time posting on any of their sites. Life is too short.

  48. DMan March 3rd, 2008 at 10:38 am

    painttheblack23-

Well thats true but like Y’s Guy pointed out, Karstens role if any, is to be the long-man out of the pen and maybe spot start once or twice in the season..

Why pull a prospect from pitching every 5 day in the minors, and put him in a role where he’ll mostly be sitting in the bullpen? I’m not an expert but I’d guess that hurts a prospects development.

They don’t want to just toss a guy like Horne into a long-relief role, because they do think he can be a regular starter and can develop more.

I’m not arguing that Karstens is an amazing pitcher, but for the role, hes a good fit right now.

  49. Y's Guy March 3rd, 2008 at 10:39 am

well you cant say that he’s that much better than karstens. either would be getting irregular work (6 innings one week and then 10 days w/ pitching) and mostly working in blowouts or if the pitcher gets injured. You need either karstens or rasner to fill that role, you’re not even looking for a bottom of the rotation guy, just a guy who can pitch well enough to stay in the game for 4 innings and give them a chance. i think karstns will be able to do that.

  50. TurnTwo March 3rd, 2008 at 10:43 am

FWIW, to me Karstens and Rasner are rather interchangeable… so it’s not so much the guy i think will help the team the most, but rather the role… whoever fills it doesnt matter to me as long as they remain capable of getting the job done.

  51. SJ44 March 3rd, 2008 at 10:44 am

As TurnTwo said, the long man is not for a guy with “upside”.

Its for veteran guys like Karstans or Rasner. Guys whose stuff can give you 2-3, sometimes 4 innings on a day when the starter doesn’t have it.

That’s the role. That’s not a role for young kids with upside because the down time between outings hurts them.

All I know is, Jeff Karstans was the Yankees best pitcher going into the last week of ST last year. He was lights out.

He hurt his hamstring, then broke his leg upon his return.

It was a lost year for him.

If he can somehow get back to the guy he was prior to those injuries, he can help the Yankees in the long role.

IMO, that’s his future in the big leagues. If he can do it, might as well be with the Yankees.

  52. MikeEff - Shelley at First March 3rd, 2008 at 10:45 am

SJ- i’m in agreement; the prime motivating factor in our newly formed team is the hunger you get from a bunch of young guys that haven’t won a championship before, that haven’t even played a full MLB season before. the friendship that has apparently formed between the big 3 and shelley + the cano/melky dynamic duo can only help this team win buy creating a cohesive atmosphere. the way the older pitchers and a-rod help the young guys is invaluable. ( remember a-rod is just as hungry) on top of that we have a manager who is driven to win and is a perfectionist without being a petty martinet.

it’s a great recipe for success and i haven’t been this excited about the team in quite a while

  53. dale d March 3rd, 2008 at 10:47 am

    jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge
I tried to find a Red Sox blog like this one so I could lurk and maybe learn something about the players and, well you know, kinda like what we enjoy here. I struck out. Really almost a baseball content free zone. (maybe the trolls will be nice enogh to clue me in)

  54. MikeEff - Shelley at First March 3rd, 2008 at 10:50 am

    hey dale, how’s it going?

from what i understand, there are far more yankee blogs than blogs for any other team

( sorry if i sound like hank, but it’s true)

  55. painttheblack23 March 3rd, 2008 at 10:52 am

Hey, you people want to keep believing in Karstens go ahead. All he is a guy who destroys minor leaguers on occasion but gets destroyed by major leaguers way more often than not.

  56. Bryan March 3rd, 2008 at 10:53 am

I don’t know if anyone saw this yesterday on Baseball Tonight around 4:30 or so but Peter “Red Sux Lover” Gammons said:

“One of the biggest moves of the off-season was Brian Cashman refusing to trade Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes for Johan Santana. Cashman’s decision showed that the Yankees are now about developing their talent from within and THAT THEY ARE TRYING TO COPY THE RED SOX WHO HAVE USED THIS STRATEGY TO WIN 2 OUT OF THE LAST 4 WORLD SERIES TITLES.”

When I heard this I almost puked all over my CFA books. I love how every Sox lover says the Yankees buy their players and they disregard the fact that all the best players on the Red Sux CAME FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE

  57. MikeEff - Shelley at First March 3rd, 2008 at 10:54 am

yeah bryan, we went over this in detail yesterday. it was ridiculous, of course.

  58. SJ44 March 3rd, 2008 at 10:54 am

I like what they have been doing with this team the entire off-season and thus far in ST.

The Girardi hire. The request, rather the demand (no matter how much the Yankees couch it) that the players show up in shape, the re-signing of the veterans, not trying to buy a bullpen, etc. All of these moves are steps in the right direction to being a sound baseball organization again.

Spring training is showing some signs of what the Yankees will be this year. More versatile offensively, more defined roles in the bullpen (a BIG downer of the last 3 years of the Torre Era) and a real sense that “going younger” is here to stay and not a passing fancy.

Those are all positive signs to me.

The Santana trade? I would have done it in December, when they could have signed Mike Cameron as the stopgap CF until Austin Jackson was ready.

Once it dragged out and Cameron left the market, it made no sense for the Yankees to do that deal. Not for what the Twins were asking in return.

In hindsight, it may turn out to be a blessing. Mainly because, it seems Phil Hughes is Phil Hughes again.

If that’s the case, then the Yankees will look back at not making that trade and be very happy with the results.

  59. DMan March 3rd, 2008 at 10:55 am

    ESPN has just gotten ridiculous..

  60. Bad Scooter March 3rd, 2008 at 10:55 am

SJ, thanks for the insight. Love your takes.

  61. Jeff NJ March 3rd, 2008 at 10:58 am

Bryan, read the thread with the first cuts from yesterday. The Gammons topic was disected to it’s DNA.

  62. Bryan March 3rd, 2008 at 10:59 am

Sorry guys I missed it I need to stop studying and hang out on here more

  63. Y's Guy March 3rd, 2008 at 11:01 am

painttheblack now you’re just being stupid, his record proves you wrong. in 2006 in 42 innings (6 starts) he went 2-1 3.80. last year’s injury plagued 14.2 innings doesnt show much, i think he’s going to suprise people this year.

  64. SJ44 March 3rd, 2008 at 11:03 am

What’s interesting about Peter’s statement is, its factually incorrect.

The 2004 Championship team had ZERO to do with homegrown commitment.

Who on that team was “homegrown”? One player in the starting lineup….Trot Nixon.

The pitching staff? Bronson Arroyo. That’s it.

    Its a nonsensical statement.

Last years Red Sox team? More to Peter’s point.

However, as far as “copying” the Red Sox blueprint, couldn’t one argue the Yankees have simply gone back to what MADE THEM A DYNASTY in the 1990′s?

I think that’s more accurate. Especially when you look at the lineups of each team during its championship runs. The Yankees have had more homegrown players emerge as champions than the Red Sox have had. That’s not an opinion, that’s a fact.

Statments like the one Peter made last night is why many of us Yankee fans just ignore the agenda ridden nonsense coming out of Bristol these days.

He did it to tweak Hank. As “payback” for Hank’s comments.

Unfortunately, that’s what Peter has become these days. The spin doctor for the Red Sox. That’s his role in his final years.

  65. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge March 3rd, 2008 at 11:03 am

I guess Brian didn’t send the memo to Peter that he has been developing the farm since 2004 when we drafted Hughes.

  66. Skippy March 3rd, 2008 at 11:06 am

Bryan, just tell us what you’re supposed to be studying; there’s enough diversity here that I’m sure someone will be able to fill in as an instant tutor.

  67. Y's Guy March 3rd, 2008 at 11:07 am

yanks buy talent but they consistently start more of thier own farm talent day in and day out than any above .500 team. i remember a game last year where 9 of the 12 who played were farm products and the yanks won big. they sign other talent but only teams like the pirates, royals and rays have so many of thier own players regularly, and they do it cause they’re cheap.

  68. CB March 3rd, 2008 at 11:08 am

The long man/ swing role is going to be particularly important this year because of the innings cap on the young arms.

They are going to get pulled at times after 5-6 innings or skipped starts to reduce their workloads.

That’s going to require an effective fill in from a long relief pitcher or spot starter.

They may have to decide on the last bull pen spot between a lefty specialist vs. a true long reliever.

  69. Bryan March 3rd, 2008 at 11:13 am

CFA Level II… anyone have some insight?

  70. CB March 3rd, 2008 at 11:15 am

The notion of the yankees “copying” the sox is just strange. Boston has done a nice job of developing position players over the past few years. There’s nothing that novel about that.

The team/ executive that has changed the way talent is acquired over the past few years is Dave Dombrowski.

Dombrowski, perhaps more than anyone else, was the one who became very, very aggressive about paying over slot for talent in the draft. Teams did that before – but Dombrowski read what was happenning with revenue sharing and team locking up young players long term earlier than most.

The Red Sox and Yankees have adopted a similar strategy.

I think it has become clear to many teams that the spending on the free agent market makes no financial sense. It’s just much more efficient to develop your own talent and use it on the field or in trades.

  71. dale d March 3rd, 2008 at 11:23 am

    too much blog time

I just got busted by the guys who work for me. I drug my computer down the beach and plugged in here at the surf lodge. I guess I’ve been refreshing here all morning.

“Boss, I love having you here once in awhile, I won’t feel so guilty now about playing on-line poker.”

  72. Patrick March 3rd, 2008 at 11:26 am

CB – You are right about Dombrowski and the Tigers. Isn’t it interesting though that the Sox and Yankees now get blasted for paying over slot when other teams have been doing it for far longer?

  73. Bad Scooter March 3rd, 2008 at 11:27 am

No doubt SJ. I watched the game yesterday. Damon, Abreu, Giambi, Joba and Bruney all lost weight and look great. I’m sure most of the other guys are in great shape as well, just not as noticeable.

As far as the bullpen, there are a bunch of guys fighting for a few spots and may the best men win. Mo, Joba, Farnsworth and Hawk are locks. After that you have 3 more spots and Albaledejo, Bruney, Britton, Ramirez, Karstens, Rasner, Ohlendorf, Veras, White, Patterson and the 3 lefties. There will be plenty of movement with Scranton this year with the bullpen. Then there’s Melancon. Am I forgetting anybody? The Yanks have options, no doubt.

  74. rbizzler March 3rd, 2008 at 11:30 am

    SJ,

Not to nitpick, but Bronson wasn’t even a product of their farm either. He was a minor league FA from Pittsburgh. And Nixon was hurt and didn’t get any AB’s in the postseason, while Youk bounced b/t AAA and the big club and got exactly one postseason AB.

The only reason I know this is that I use it as ammo against all of my Sox fan friends who try and play the ‘Yanks buy their championships’ card.

That being said, I enjoy Gammons but he is nothing more than a shill for the Red Sox these days.

  75. Clay Bellinger March 3rd, 2008 at 11:31 am

The 2 hour baseball tonight, LIVE from ESPN the weekend was atrocious. I love baseball tonight but that thing yesterday was unwatchable. I hope the regular broadcasts are nothing like yesterday.

Jeff Karstens aka The White Flag

  80. The J Train March 3rd, 2008 at 11:59 am

Bryan…Im pretty sure that there was only one player on the 2004 Red Sox team that was home grown…and one of them was Trot Nixon, who played about 30 games that year

I like Karstens.. i went to a ST game last year that Pavano was suppossed to pitch (so they might as well have put T.B.A.) but Karstens filled in and pitch a good few innings. I had high hopes for him last year before he got hurt, I think he’s going to be a good long man this year.

What a pitcher does for his first 3 spring training outings will never be a fair assessment of what a pitcher is about. It’s a time to build up arm strength, work on pitches, and gradually peak velocity all under the watchful eyes of the manager and pitching coach.
At this time of year the hitters haven’t quite caught up to pitchers which is another measurement to use. The 3rd week in March is when managers form real opinions for who they project to start the season and decisions take place during the final week of March. Any player on the bubble in late March has reason for anxiety.
