He did the right thing

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Mar 04, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Spike Lee was at Knology Park. I wanted to ask him about his use of Bruce Springsteen’s song The Fuse over the end credits of 25th Hour but I never got the chance.

Probably just as well for Spike.

Pete: I saw Bruce in Hartford Thursday night. He opened with “So Young and in Love” which was a total shocker, and a wild, incredibly energetic performance, with Bruce coming out without guitar and just dancing around the stage and swinging around and around the mike stand like a deranged monkey. Great show. And no sign of Pat Riley or Al Leiter at the show, so that was nice, too.

25th Hour was an over rated piece of crapola IMO. You want a good countdown movie check out Day Zero – way better.

  3. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 4th, 2008 at 5:54 pm

Never seen a Spike Lee movie.

  4. saucY March 4th, 2008 at 6:05 pm

Me neither, Rebecca… (I wasn’t sure, so I had to look at his IMDB page)

  5. JBRO March 4th, 2008 at 6:09 pm

Mm, so speech makes me think of commencement speaker and our commencement speaker is bob woodruff.

Yogi would have been so much cooler.

  9. Dee March 4th, 2008 at 6:18 pm

I liked 25th Hour. I heard Do The Right Thing is a classic but I haven’t seen it.

The mention of Spike on a Yankees blog reminds me of when Jeter walked over during a game to give autographed bats to Spike Lee’s son and Brad Pitt’s son. Have to admit I liked Jeter a little bit less after that.

  10. east side yankee March 4th, 2008 at 6:20 pm

The 25th hour is a fantastic movie…Ed Norton, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Barry Pepper are fantastic.

The last movie he directed with Denzel, Clive Owen and jodie Foster – Inside Man was also good.

when you get a chance you should watch 25th hour

  11. east side yankee March 4th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

    Dee

why would you think less of Derek bc he gave a child a bat?

  12. S.o.S.27 March 4th, 2008 at 6:23 pm

We were talking about nick names for Phil Hughes last week. How about picking up where Pedro left off.

    HUGHES YOUR DADDY

  13. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 4th, 2008 at 6:26 pm

Hughes Your Daddy is actually kinda cute. Would make a good t-shirt.

  14. Ranting Guy (stop whining) March 4th, 2008 at 6:28 pm

SOS that is pretty funny ya know …

  15. Dr. Cox March 4th, 2008 at 6:28 pm

25th Hour wouldve been better if it was written and directed by Guy Ritchie

  16. MikeEff - Shelley at First March 4th, 2008 at 6:28 pm

    summer of sam

  17. Doreen March 4th, 2008 at 6:31 pm

    Y’s Guy -

I wish I knew the Lou Gherig Story was on. I ALWAYS watch it whenever I can. I know it’s corny, but it’s great. And I always marvel at just how much Gary Cooper resembles the real Lou.

  18. S.o.S.27 March 4th, 2008 at 6:34 pm

Wasnt Andrea looking for a shirt to get her French friend? Maybe?

    Hughes Your Daddy(front side)
Phil is. Deal with it!!(back side)

  19. Andrea - anti-anti March 4th, 2008 at 6:36 pm

yeah, Dee, I was gonna ask, how can you like Jeter less for giving bats to kids? I realize they’re celerikids, but still…

  20. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 4th, 2008 at 6:37 pm

S.O.S. I’d totally by that shirt, btw.

  21. Andrea - anti-anti March 4th, 2008 at 6:37 pm

SOS: if that were a tshirt, that would be great! French people love puns, and inside jokes. He would love having to explain that to the people in France. That’s why my friend loved “Buck Foston” so much. She loved that she got it, and she loved explaining it to everyone back in France.

  22. S.o.S.27 March 4th, 2008 at 6:39 pm

My favorite Spike Lee movies. Michael Jordans GOTTA BE THE SHOES. Oh wait those are commercials. Still theyre my favorite.

25 hour slow like the end though
    Inside Man average

  23. S.o.S.27 March 4th, 2008 at 6:41 pm

    Andrea,
Have someone make it, not hard and would totally draw attention. Or go back to a Pavano kick me shirt.

  24. saucY March 4th, 2008 at 6:42 pm

did someone post under the name “Hughes Your Daddy” last summer?

    it is great!

  25. Jeff NJ March 4th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

I have a Spike Lee story. About 10 years ago I was walking in to California Pizza Kitchen on E60th and who do I see sitting at the table next to me but Spike, his gorgeous wife and two children. I pointed at him and said “Do the Right Thing”, he looked back and said, “I am, I’m trying to order”. I said ok and sat down. As he was leaving he came over and said hello, he’s a real dude.

  26. Joe from Long Island March 4th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

Here’s a question for the blog, if anyone knows:

I was reading Chad Jennings’ SWB blog – which is pretty informative, by the way – and he mentions the game today. Specifically, he mentions that Kei Igawa, who had two perfect innings, had 71 strikeouts vs. only 15 walks in Scranton last year. Assuming the strike zone is the same, why so much better in AAA? Is his control that much better (IF so, why?), or is it that the AAA batters swing through his high pitches, whereas in the bigs, they time them better, or whatever, and pummel them? I suspect it is the latter, but does anyone have any insight into this?

  27. S.o.S.27 March 4th, 2008 at 6:46 pm

Damn saucy, you have to do a Clinton on my parade. I didnt steal someones line. Here i thought i made it up. Whatever, it still sounds good even if someone came up with it first.

  28. saucY March 4th, 2008 at 6:46 pm

    sorry sos :(

  29. Doreen March 4th, 2008 at 6:48 pm

    Jeff NJ -

Great story. The other night he was at a basketball game (Knicks?) which my husband was watching ( I hate pro basketball), and it was great just listening to him.

  30. crawdaddie March 4th, 2008 at 6:48 pm

25th Hour is a very good film and I loved the Springsteen song during the end credits.

  31. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 4th, 2008 at 6:48 pm

Joe: My own opinion is that ML hitters are just that much better, but I’m not really the one you want to ask.

  32. S.o.S.27 March 4th, 2008 at 6:50 pm

I got another one for red sox fan.

    Daddy’s Back(front side)
Hughes Your Daddy(Back) with sox doing the duck and cover.

  33. pat March 4th, 2008 at 6:51 pm

80′s/ early 90′s Spike Lee movies were cutting edge at the time. She’s Gotta Have It and Do the Right Thing are well worth renting for those youngins’ of you who have never seen one of his movies.

  34. Fran March 4th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Dorren – probably the Knick game. He has season tickets.

  35. Andrea - anti-anti March 4th, 2008 at 6:53 pm

SOS: I really should just make the shirt. I’ve been getting better with the photoshop :)

  36. frits March 4th, 2008 at 6:54 pm

do the right thing is crazy good. off the hook. if that doesn’t capture a summer day in the city i don’t know what does.

    nice reference pete.

  37. Andrea - anti-anti March 4th, 2008 at 6:54 pm

ok, SOS, I don’t think I’m THAT good with the photoshop!

  38. Boston Dave March 4th, 2008 at 6:55 pm

I’m sticking with my nickname for Hughes of The PHranchise.

and you know you there are tons of websites that let you make your own custom shirts right?

I was gonna make one for IPK, Hughes, and Joba (dont tell MLB or the Yankees). I don’t want to testify before Congress if I don’t get a license to produce a single shirt for myself. so shhhh!

  39. Dee March 4th, 2008 at 6:55 pm

    East Side and Andrea,

Yeah I guess the fact that they were celeb kids getting special treatment had something to do with it. I know he is Jeet and can do no wrong and that’s definitely not a bad gesture, and I’m sure he does a lot for under-privileged kids too through charities, but there’s something about him going out of his way in the middle of a game that left an impression with me…I was there and watching it happen was a little odd and out of context, especially when you can see other “normal” kids watching and calling out his name. I felt a bit sorry for the other kids who didn’t get acknowledged to be honest.

  40. Doreen March 4th, 2008 at 6:56 pm

    Fran

You are probably right about it being the Knicks.

  41. S.o.S.27 March 4th, 2008 at 6:59 pm

    Andrea,
Any mom and pops sports shops or even a cards or signs shop can do it for you. Or do it the easy way and take Boston Daves advice. Make sure you let us see it if you getter done.

  42. Andrea - anti-anti March 4th, 2008 at 7:00 pm

Dee: I see what you’re saying, but I’ve also seen Jeter carry on conversations with kids while he’s in the batter’s box, so he just seems like a really, really personable player to me. I have only sat up close once in recent memory, but that one time he talked to anyone who yelled out his name while he was standing there.

  43. Y's Guy March 4th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

maybe jeter lost a bar bet with pitt…..very interesting possibilities there….

  44. Andrea - anti-anti March 4th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

SOS: I’d have to design it first though, no? I had a friend in college who was in a fraternity, and I helped him design the rush shirts every year. He took the design to a mom and pop type store to get them put on a shirt, but he still had to bring them the design. Or is that just him being a weirdo?

  45. up with rodriguez! March 4th, 2008 at 7:05 pm

somebody get lost on the way to the “latin american dictators” blog?

  46. S.o.S.27 March 4th, 2008 at 7:10 pm

Mom and Pops can give you design ideas(on the computer). If not. Im sure with all of the creative bloggers here, you wont have a problem coming up with something. Have a good night guys.

  47. Rhapsody in Blue March 4th, 2008 at 7:21 pm

I’ve seen all Spike’s early movies, I like “Do The Right Things” the most. Very good cast of actors.

  48. Rhapsody in Blue March 4th, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Do The Right Thing, I meant to write.

  49. Drew March 4th, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Spike was probably looking for Reggie Miller. I think Spike’s films are vastly overrated, though I have not seen that many.

  50. Springsteen Hater March 4th, 2008 at 7:32 pm

    I hate Bruce Springsteen!

  51. H is for Hillary March 4th, 2008 at 7:37 pm

  57. Matt Waters March 4th, 2008 at 7:47 pm

25th Hour is one of the best movies of the decade.

  58. Kelli in Conn. March 4th, 2008 at 7:52 pm

Joba is one class act. Taken in part from an article by Kat O’Brien of Newsday …..

And speaking of Joba, he did something pretty cool this weekend, flying in a lower-income family from his hometown of Lincoln, Neb., so that they could go to Disney World. Joba said he never has been on a family vacation because they never had the money to do that. So he asked a high school coach of his, who’s also a teacher, to “find me a family that works hard for everything they’ve got but doesn’t have anything extra.” So he flew the family — two parents and three kids — to Florida for a trip to Disney World. He met them there on Sunday, which was his first trip to Disney and first time on a roller coaster. He liked Space Mountain, he said.

  59. chris March 4th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

25th hour is also one of the top five dumbest movies of the last two centuries. That’s why only 67 people watched it.

  60. Frank Discussion March 4th, 2008 at 8:18 pm

I enjoyed the “25th Hour”, good performances by Ed Norton and Brian Cox, a great character actor. Worth watching solely for the bathroom mirror rant.

Favorite Spike Lee films are “Clockers” and “Crooklyn”.

  61. Evil Empire March 4th, 2008 at 8:45 pm

great title to post…great movie. ed nortons part where he talks to the mirror and the end of the movie are phenomenal. great cast

  62. saucY March 4th, 2008 at 8:50 pm

honestly, i’m not sure ed norton would do a bad movie, so i’m sure 25th hour is great. i’ll try to watch if i get a chance…

  63. asburyboss March 4th, 2008 at 9:37 pm

I saw spike lee going into the Springsteen “Rising” show at MSG. Thought it was odd that he’d be a springsteen…but he bumped up a few notches in my book.

  64. Jim Clark March 5th, 2008 at 4:09 am

Spike Lee used a Bruce Springsteen song in one of his films? They go together..like rats and sewers.

  65. Peter Abraham March 5th, 2008 at 8:36 am

Always good to see Jim Clark check in with a bigoted view. The same guy who is not man enough to give a real e-mail address. At least Spike and Bruce stand up for what they believe, like real men.
