Yankees are perfect

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Mar 04, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

There you have it. Phil Hughes, Scott Patterson, Kei Igawa and Billy Traber combined on a five-inning, rain-shortened perfect game.

Yogi Berra was on hand but he didn’t leap into anybody’s arms when it was over.

The Yankees will play a short intrasquad game tomorrow morning around 10:15 a.m. to get work in for Jeff Marquez, Chase Wright, Alan Horne and Mark Melancon.

lol @ that Yogi comment, Pete. i’m seriously trying to hide my laughter at work after reading that one…

  2. Moe March 4th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

    Pete grat blog.

There was celebration on the perfect game? lol

Can you find out when Hughes will pitch next, he was probably going to pitch 2-3 innings, hope it doesn’t mess up his routine.

  3. Yankee4life! March 4th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Anyone have an update on that JB Cox? Is he pitching again? We could use him in the pen.

  4. Andrea March 4th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

I love when Pete knows stuff :)

  5. Pete March 4th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Excuse me, did I see Igawa’s name in there?

  6. SJ44 March 4th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

I am assuming both Kennedy and Chamberlain on are tap for tomorrow.

An ESPN game for those interested.

JB Cox is not in the major league camp. He will be in the minor league camp and begin his work to get back into the good graces of the Yankees.

  7. Mike R. March 4th, 2008 at 4:11 pm

I am a huge JB Cox fan. I think he could solidify the bullpen this year.

  8. The J Train March 4th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

any word on Cristian Garcia, or has that shipped sailed?

  9. MikeEff - Shelley at First March 4th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

i can’t wait to see that game on ESPN. i want Joba and Ian in HiDef!

  10. Mike R. March 4th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

J Train – According to Pinstripes Plus Christian Garcia is in minor league camp and on track to start the season. He could move fast if he can stay healthy.

  11. SJ44 March 4th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Garcia will be in the minor league camp. He’s also coming off TJ Surgery.

Not sure of his timetable. If he is healthy, he probably starts the year in Tampa.

  12. Andrea March 4th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

  13. The J Train March 4th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

anyone know if yankee road games will be broadcast in hd this season?

  14. Bryan March 4th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

    What is Kennedy’s clubhouse nickname?

Back in the good graces what did Cox do SJ?

  15. raymagnetic â„¢ March 4th, 2008 at 4:17 pm

    Andrea – Agreed.

  16. JBRO March 4th, 2008 at 4:17 pm

    3 questions

Do they do the roll call at ST games?

    Is anyone going tommorow?

And if they dont do rollcall, anyone up for one?

  17. raymagnetic â„¢ March 4th, 2008 at 4:18 pm

“Back in the good graces what did Cox do SJ?”

Had a fight in a bar and got injured.

  18. Blargh March 4th, 2008 at 4:19 pm

Yea, I don’t think I want to eat boiled crow either
    Or animal entrails

  19. Jose March 4th, 2008 at 4:21 pm

hopefully igawa can keep it up and actually do something outta the ‘pen instead of just raking in the cash

  20. Bryan March 4th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Was this recently? I thought he missed last year with and elbow injury

  21. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge March 4th, 2008 at 4:23 pm

  22. frits March 4th, 2008 at 4:24 pm

see, i knew it wasn’t fair to judge players based on their first spring training start. igawa has redeemed himself ;)

  23. Mike R. March 4th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

Bryan – That was last year. Those injuries were a consequence of the fight.

  24. Ranting Guy (stop whining) March 4th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

    A “perfect” game?
Its a new thread and there are 20 comments already.
I’m truly surprised there are no negative comments yet.
    No really I am.
    Truly.
Some of you guys are slacking.
SOMEONE had to make contact with a Yanks’ pitch.

  26. bottom line March 4th, 2008 at 4:29 pm

This probably belongs in an earlier comments section– but who would see it now? Anyway, it was not Dan Shaughnesy who first used the term “fellowship of the miserable” in Boston. It was Rick Pittino, then coach of the Celtics, talking about whiney Boston fans

  27. Mike R. March 4th, 2008 at 4:30 pm

The Yankees should hire Brien Taylor and have him give a speech to every draft class. Austin Krum, George Kontos and JB Cox might have benefited from it.

  28. S.o.S.27 March 4th, 2008 at 4:33 pm

    Ranting Guy,
I cant believe that the Yanks didnt suck it up and play during the pouring rain. I thought all the running in spring training would toughen them up. I think they should instead due wind sprints in the rain. Season is about to start and they have a lot to improve on. Also being that they played 5 innings they should have won by Little League mercy rule. Batting practice after wind sprints.

  29. S.o.S.27 March 4th, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Also hire David Wells on why you shouldnt go to bars. Oh wait. Didnt he throw a no hitter with a hang over?

“Please kid, grow up. I will post whenever I want regardless of what Moose does this year.

If this is so important to you, I feel sorry for you.

A little tip for you. It doesn’t take balls to post on a blog.

Its just entertainment. That’s all it is.”

If this isn’t important to you then why not put yourself on the line? And don’t call me kid because I’ve probably dated your mother.

  31. gayle March 4th, 2008 at 4:37 pm

Going back to the Mike and the MadDog conversation. As much as I do not like them,as much as I listen to them one thing I think is important when you criticize them. Their knowledge or lack thereof of baseball and Yankees, their prospects etc can easily be explained.

It is important to remember that they are a sports talk show that talk about all sports they do not focus just one sport but have to know a bit about all the sports and really cant become immersed in one team etc. That is not an excuse just plain facts and in as much as they pretend to know everything there is just no way they can. So to listen to them and take what they say as gospel about anything to be honest is a big mistake. They read the newspapers, perhaps talk to some insiders, talk to some players and that is about it they are not beat writers talking to the teams on a daily basis, they are not investigative reporters doing in depth research but I look at them more like columnists who discuss a little bit of this and a little bit of that.

I would HIGHLY recommend if you really want to get a handle on what is happening in baseball on all levels etc that you invest in XM and listen to channel 175. They have a great morning show, Charlie Steiner has a show that talks to beat writers etc around the league, they h ave a Saturday morning show called Majors and Minors that focuses on the minor leagues, they cover the draft and those players really well etc etc.

  32. Mike R. March 4th, 2008 at 4:38 pm

SOS – I don’t have a problem with players going to bars. It’s more a matter of being a happy drunk and not a violent drunk. :)

  33. Lori March 4th, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Wow. Just when there was the whole happy vibe thing going. :(

  34. SJ44 March 4th, 2008 at 4:40 pm

If you are that old, then I really feel sorry for you.

I don’t see what exactly I am “putting on the line”.

If you lose, you will just post under another name.

Not like you haven’t done that before.

I prefer to “put myself on the line” on things that actually make a difference in my life.

  41. rbizzler March 4th, 2008 at 4:46 pm

The injury that Cox suffered in the bar fight had nothing to do with his elbow injury. They were two different occurrences. Here’s hoping he gets healthy this year and can contribute next year.

Here is and update on the surgery from Mike A. at RAB:

  42. Chrissy March 4th, 2008 at 4:48 pm

from the last thread but revised

DONT PROMISE GRAMPS ANYTHING SJ!!!IN SJ WE TRUST…

Look i cant stand Moose and the attitude he brings. But if he struggles, I cant see Girardi having the patience that Torre had. So if he does well, he helps our team get to summer. If he doesnt, then someone else will come in and help us before its too late. Either way we’ll be fine.

Andrea – Welcome! You are hereby Vice-President of the Anti-Anti movement.

  50. DLev March 4th, 2008 at 4:53 pm

Yankees clinched the WS championship today! Note that the last three Yankee no-hitters, Gooden, Wells, Cone all came in years when the Yankees won the WS. Doesn’t matter who they throw out there this year. Mussina, Karstens, and Igawa can pitch 750 innings, won’t matter, the WS is in the bag.

I’m already counting this one. I’m a little worried about 2009 though.

  51. anti-mussina March 4th, 2008 at 4:55 pm

define “bombs” and i will tell you if you can add me to the list or not.

  54. Doreen March 4th, 2008 at 4:58 pm

    Gayle,

I like the idea of talking to all the beat writers, but I sure wish it didn’t have to be Charlie Steiner. He is a bit repetitive – the same schtick to each of his guests. I also don’t like how imperious he sounds when talking about the Yankees – as if he rose above them after his stint with them.

I like listening to Dibble and Kennedy when I get the chance, too.

A lot of people with a lot of in depth knowledge of the sport are available to listeners. It’s a great investment.

  55. saucY March 4th, 2008 at 4:59 pm

    sos, yup! :D

less than 8 wins and an era over 6

  58. CB March 4th, 2008 at 5:02 pm

“I cant see Girardi having the patience that Torre had.”

People have said this a lot about Girardi and I just don’t see what it’s based on. There’s this notion that Girardi is only going to make decisions based on competition, etc.

That might be true but I don’t see any specific evidence for it.

In fact, so far we’ve seen the opposite I think.

Case in point – Girardi has been a huge Farnsworth supporter. He’s the one who has made Farnsworth his personal reclamation project. Based on what – he caught him when they were both with Chicago?

Girardi has also pushed playing Giambi at first base. We’ve seen that movie before.

Mussina is basically a lock for a spot int he rotation.

He’s seems to be high on Karstens.

I don’t think any of these moves are wrong per se – but they are exactly the same thing the yankees tried under Torre in the past.

Again, I’m not saying that things haven’t changed under Girardi – they have. Players coming into shape has been a big thing. And the Mussina issue is probably more related to need and his contract.

But I think people are making a bit too much into how he’s evaluating players in an entirely different way than the past.

Farnsworth should in no way be on this team. He absolutely does not deserve it and will most likely be a dead spot in the pen. If Girardi wants to turn him around, more power to him.

But that’s no different than what Torre tried in the past – giving someone a chance on the team because he’s a “veteran” who has experience (this case personal experience with Girardi) rather than a high level of performance.

  59. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge March 4th, 2008 at 5:03 pm

You know, I’d argue that I never actually said that Moose would be great this year, and I actually explicitly state that he could very well be bad, but I simply stated that I wasn’t tossing him under the bus after a couple bad ST starts.

But I kind of like being told to eat crow.

    Even though it’s disgusting.

  93. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex") March 4th, 2008 at 5:32 pm

I had spelling errors hence how pissed I was

  94. Lori March 4th, 2008 at 5:33 pm

    Brandon – I think it is the anti-Mussina. ;)

  95. S.o.S.27 March 4th, 2008 at 5:33 pm

    Mike eff,
Forget i posted it. No need to worry. But if you did. Rank them from favorite to least favorite.

  96. Y's Guy March 4th, 2008 at 5:35 pm

as an announcer, steiner was too much like sterling so he had to go but suzy was a step down from there.
imagine that the greatest team in the world, has michael kay, charlie steiner and then suzy waldman in the radio booth. thats not to mention mr show tunes himself!

  97. Ranting Guy (stop whining) March 4th, 2008 at 5:36 pm

Pete – Please tell Moose to win 8 games as soon as he can.
Anti – If he’s got an ERA under 5 by the time that happens, will you please go away?

  98. hmmm March 4th, 2008 at 5:36 pm

“you’re wrong because he will have over 7 era and less than 8 wins.”

    perhaps.

and if you are right, i guess i won’t be king of the internets after all. all this work for nothing.

  99. Y's Guy March 4th, 2008 at 5:36 pm

may i just point out that anti mussina will have no use for that nickname once the season is over…

  100. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex") March 4th, 2008 at 5:37 pm

Lori it’s amazing how that guy is so cocky just because they have Johan…oh man please get me some KARMA over there

  101. Upstate March 4th, 2008 at 5:44 pm

Is there a website that lists the “line” on each pitchers’ separate outings ???

    EX: 05.05.2007 5 IP – 4 hits – 2 k’s – 1 bb
    05.11.2007……………..
    05.18.2007……………..

  102. JimDC March 4th, 2008 at 5:46 pm

Don’t look now but ex-Nat lefty Billy Traber is quietly making a case for himself to be in the bullpen this year. He does everything Sean Henn doesn’t do … he pitches with velocity and he throws strikes.

  103. Andrea - anti-anti March 4th, 2008 at 5:46 pm

Can we go back to talking about the perfect game that Hughes, Patterson, Igawa and Traber had?

  104. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 4th, 2008 at 5:48 pm

    Hughes
    Patterson
    Igawa
    Traber

One of these is not like the other…

  105. S.o.S.27 March 4th, 2008 at 5:51 pm

    Over under

    1.Hughes 15 game winner
    2.Giambi 275 avg.
    3.Duncan 16 homeruns
    4.Melky 12 assists

Who has the highest batting average on the team this year?
    Arod
    Posada
    Jeter
    Cano

    I go with Jeter.

  106. Mike R. March 4th, 2008 at 5:54 pm

    SOS – 1 – Under
2 – Under. (Not by much)
    3 – Over
    4 – Over
6 – I’m going to say Robbie by a nose.

  107. Blargh March 4th, 2008 at 5:59 pm

Upstate: Baseball-Reference actually has that info; you can check one year at a time

I am shamelessly plugging my blog.

I am doing community projections and am wondering if anyone would like to participate.

If you would, please leave your projections in the comments section.

I am currently working on a Chamberlain projection.

    Thanks. :)

  109. Y's Guy March 4th, 2008 at 6:02 pm

1 is under (hughes wont start more than 23)
2 is under (giambi wont hit the other way)
    3 is over
4 is under, (ppl will run less and less on him)
batting avg will be canoe, then jeter, matsui, arod and then jorge.

  110. Y's Guy March 4th, 2008 at 6:15 pm

    joba 140ip 150k 10-3 2.85

  111. S.o.S.27 March 4th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

    Y’s guy
Ill go under on e.r.a for Joba.

I cant believe you dont believe that Hughes will win 15 games in 23 starts after his no hitter today.

    1.even
    2.under
    3.over
    4.under
    Jeter,Arod,Cano,Posada

  112. Ranting Guy (stop whining) March 4th, 2008 at 6:25 pm

    SOS –

If I was betting money, it would be:

1: Hughes will fall just short of 15 wins.
2: Giambi will not hit the other way enough to hit 275.
3: Duncan will get his 16HR if he gets 400+ at bats.
4: Melky will not get 12 assists because base runners will have learned not to test him.
5: Batting averages (in order) will be Cano Jeter (Abreu)(Damon) A-Rod (Matsui) Posada (Melky) then the three-headed mutant playing first base.

It would be nice if Posada could hit 290, which would be one of his best years. The other guys will hit for better averages. A-Rod’s career avg is right below 310, Jeter should do a little better, but Cano’s going to whip it out this year.

But I don’t bet money so how does Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, and all 4 guys you mentioned will hit between 320-350 sound?

  113. JoeT YANKEES - fan of the anti-anti March 4th, 2008 at 6:27 pm

I think Mussina has a decent year, especially for a #5 starter (which he will be eventually), yeah he doesn’t have an “out” pitch right now (evident by all of the 2 strike hits) but he’s a real smart pitcher and he’ll get people out

  114. JoeT YANKEES - fan of the anti-anti March 4th, 2008 at 6:28 pm

I’ll take Cano for the batting average lead.

  115. S.o.S.27 March 4th, 2008 at 6:30 pm

But I don’t bet money so how does Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, and all 4 guys you mentioned will hit between 320-350 sound?

Sounds like Happy Drunk time celebrating #27. Cant argue with your real picks either, but Happy Drunk sounds better.

  116. Rich March 4th, 2008 at 6:45 pm

Comments on Phil’s blog just hit 1000.

  117. Y's Guy March 4th, 2008 at 6:47 pm

rantin guy, you and i agreed on everything!….
    everything except mussina that is…

  118. McLovin March 4th, 2008 at 7:09 pm

Jeter will only be able to hit for Avg.And for Giambi is that with or without Steroids.

  119. Derek March 4th, 2008 at 9:37 pm

See? Igawa took the shades off in the overcast day and went 6 up n 6 down…. told you…
