    Randy Keisler is still pitching?

  2. Paolo March 5th, 2008 at 10:07 am

Randy Keisler…there’s a blast from the past. How long’s he been with the Twinkies?

  3. Lori March 5th, 2008 at 10:07 am

What time is the intrasquad game and who is playing in that one?

  4. pat March 5th, 2008 at 10:12 am

    Alex DHing?

  5. whozat March 5th, 2008 at 10:13 am

    “Alex DHing?”

They do this all the time. It gives them a chance to look at a guy like Betemit out in the field. They played Shelley in RF the other day while Abreu DHed. It’s normal.

  6. Jax March 5th, 2008 at 10:14 am

I remember when Randy Keisler first came up with the Yankees and showed Jeter up cause he made an error behind him. Long time coming.

  7. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 5th, 2008 at 10:14 am

I think the intrasquad game is going on now?

I’ll miss a lot of this game (thank you @#$# midterm, but with luck I’ll be able to catch the second half)

  8. whozat March 5th, 2008 at 10:14 am

“What time is the intrasquad game and who is playing in that one?”

    I think it’s like…now.

I suspect it’ll be all minor leaguers.

  9. pat March 5th, 2008 at 10:17 am

    Whozat

I guess I just don’t ever remember it happening with A-Rod or Jeter.

  10. Lori March 5th, 2008 at 10:17 am

    Good luck Rebecca!

  11. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 5th, 2008 at 10:29 am

Thanks Lori! I’m more worried about tomorrow, as I’ve three tomorrow (X_X), but have to get through today first.

  12. Ross March 5th, 2008 at 10:29 am

    Exciting lineup and pitching today!

The game is on two Sopcast feeds if you want to check it out:

    Enjoy!

  13. The J Train March 5th, 2008 at 10:35 am

didnt we trade mike lowell to the marlins for Keisler?

  14. The J Train March 5th, 2008 at 10:36 am

or was that the other bust yarnell?

  15. Patrick March 5th, 2008 at 10:46 am

Yanks entire starting lineup today should be on the opening day roster. The four pitchers also all have a good chance to be with the big league team in april. Should be a fun game to watch, luckily before I left for work this morning I set up my tivo to record it :)

  16. saucY March 5th, 2008 at 10:51 am

i should have set my tivo. i guess they’re replaying it at 11 tonight. too late for me to watch the whole thing…

  17. whozat March 5th, 2008 at 10:58 am

“I guess I just don’t ever remember it happening with A-Rod or Jeter.”

How much attention have you really paid to the positional lineups for Spring Training games in the past?

  18. NYY Stadium Insider Nick 2 Slick March 5th, 2008 at 11:08 am

Nice lineup, and the pitchers scheduled to pitch today are guys to be excited about seeing!

pat clearly you hadn’t paid attention. Even if there was really something to be concerned about I doubt they’d be just sending our 300 million dollar investment into the lineup, don’t you?

  19. jmo March 5th, 2008 at 11:12 am

you can program your tivo online cant u? do u have it set up with a wireless modem or a phone line?

  20. Max March 5th, 2008 at 11:15 am

    Pete:

Just an FYI, it is Kevin Slowey not “Matt”. As a Twins fan seeing this irked me. The Evil Empire won’t be messing up his name too much longer.

BTW: Tell “Big Stein” that we enjoy his luxury tax money each year. Thanks much.

  21. Bad Scooter March 5th, 2008 at 11:19 am

    Max,

You enjoy the luxury tax money? Sorry, that’s your very cheap owner who pockets that. Too bad he doesn’t put it back into the team.

  22. CB March 5th, 2008 at 11:20 am

“BTW: Tell “Big Stein” that we enjoy his luxury tax money each year. Thanks much.”

Wasn’t enough to keep Santana now was it?

  23. McLovin March 5th, 2008 at 11:21 am

Finally Joba pitching to real players.

  24. saucY March 5th, 2008 at 11:21 am

jmo, no wireless phoneline or modem or anything for me. (directv thinks i live in jersey)

  25. longtime March 5th, 2008 at 11:23 am

Max we enjoy our 26 championships, who would you rather have “The Steins” or that wealthy cheap owner you have now?

  26. Ken Phelps March 5th, 2008 at 11:25 am

Mike Lowell was drafted by the Yankees 6/1/95 then traded on 2/1/99 to the Florida Marlins for Mark J. Johnson, Ed Yarnall, and Todd Noel (minors).

Randy Keisler was drafted by the Yankees 6/2/98 in the 2nd round of the 1998 amateur draft. He signed July 21, 1998. Keisler was then released on 2/5/2003.

He has bounced all over the place since and recently was signed by the Twins this off season and invited to camp as a non-roster invitee…

  27. ItalianGreco March 5th, 2008 at 11:25 am

    Max, you are a tool.

Much not be enjoying it all that much considering the Twins just traded Johan because they didn’t want to pay him. I guess they use the money to sign the Livan’s and Craig Monroe’s of the baseball world. lol

  29. velocity March 5th, 2008 at 11:28 am

Lol Kevin Slowey is a nice prospect, but come on Max. In a matchup between the Yankee lineup and Slowely, the Yanks have the advantage. Slowey is comparable to Kennedy but allows more home runs. Hes not a pitcher that any team is going to be trembling over facing for the next decade. Liriano on the other hand, is someone you make a comment like that about.

  30. saucY March 5th, 2008 at 11:29 am

max, we hope you enjoy your roofless stadium once it’s built. good luck with that and playing those “if-necessary” make-up games in the fall…

  31. jashell2000 March 5th, 2008 at 11:30 am

I’m really looking forward to seeing Albaladejo pitch today. I’m rooting that he goes north I keep hearing he throws hard with decent command…should be good stuff today.

  32. Clay Bellinger March 5th, 2008 at 11:30 am

Who is to say that the Twins arent using the money for scouting? We don’t know…

  33. Steve Balboni March 5th, 2008 at 11:30 am

    Yeah. What saucY said. ;-)

  34. raymagnetic â„¢ March 5th, 2008 at 11:32 am

    They draft horribly.

  35. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex") March 5th, 2008 at 11:34 am

    hmmm Mar.4th

The Yankees prospects were at it once again on Day Two of minor league camp. Getting their workouts in before the rain, Jesus Montero helped bring it down with some light-tower shots during his batting practice session.

  36. Andy Hawkins March 5th, 2008 at 11:35 am

Hey, I pitched a no-hitter in Old Comiskey Park and lost while with pitching the Yankees. Remember me?

  38. Jim Leyritz March 5th, 2008 at 11:38 am

Hey man – sorry Andy. I dropped that fly in left allowing 3 runs to score. Whoops. They shouldn’t have had me out there anyway, I’m a catcher. Hey, but if you didn’t walk all those guys, we’d only lost by 1 run, not 3.

Great news about Murcer. That’s fantastic

  42. Terry Ryan March 5th, 2008 at 11:42 am

I think we’ve done a heck of a job over the years drafting fine talent. Our Minor Leagues have always been top 10 year in and year out. We just can’t keep them once they become stars.

  43. keith March 5th, 2008 at 11:42 am

Well, they don’t pay over-slot money for anyone.

  56. The J Train March 5th, 2008 at 11:57 am

if I recall correctly, Keisler had somewhat of a decent season with the A’s not too long ago.

Had my fantasy draft last night(it was ridiculously early)…but I have a beast of a team….might be the greatest fantasy team ever….I cant believe how some of these guys fell to me…I had the 7th overall pick.

    C- Russell Martin
    1B- Justin Morneau
    2B- Chase Utley

    Bench- Juan Pierre

  57. ItalianGreco March 5th, 2008 at 12:01 pm

J-Nice offense, but that pitching is not that great. Still a nice team though.

  58. longtime March 5th, 2008 at 12:02 pm

hate to burst your bubble but for al/nl ( which is like shooting fish in barrel) that’s really a pretty poor team especially that pitching staff

  59. MikeEff - Shelley at First March 5th, 2008 at 12:03 pm

    thats’ a helluva team dude…

  60. frits March 5th, 2008 at 12:04 pm

fantasy question – if you had the third pick, who would you take? i’m not sure who’s going in front of me, but i’m sure one of the guys is a-rod. if you were me, who would you target?

  61. Chris -Iowa March 5th, 2008 at 12:04 pm

How many teams are in your league and what is the format?? May need to make some moves for pitchers….

  62. Clay Bellinger March 5th, 2008 at 12:05 pm

The Twins also had 4 in the Top 100 in 2007, 2006, and 2005. All I am saying is that they do pretty well with what they have considering their payroll. We don’t know where that revenue sharing goes to. It could be used on other things besides signing their own guys to bad, long contracts (Hunter, Santana).

  63. S.o.S.27 March 5th, 2008 at 12:05 pm

    Good morning to all,
I just have one question. Why is a fan of a AAAA team in here argueing about how good his team is? Shouldnt you be in a Royals blog talking about what team is going to be in the cellar this year? Its like a Clipper argueing with a Laker. This is the big leagues blog, k.c. and tampa are waiting for you.

  64. Chris -Iowa March 5th, 2008 at 12:06 pm

I’m 3 in mine and I have the same question…. may take H Ramirez, Wright, or Santana….. which is blasphemy

  65. The J Train March 5th, 2008 at 12:06 pm

its a h2h league…I dont really care about pitching, Im going to dominate in every offensive category. And besides that, my pitching staff is not that bad.

  66. frits March 5th, 2008 at 12:07 pm

8 teams, 5×5, al/nl, head to head, wins awarded per category.

its the league’s inaugural season, so if you guys have recs. on how to structure it, i’m all ears. i’ve never done fantasy baseball before.

  67. Chris -Iowa March 5th, 2008 at 12:08 pm

Yeah your offense is solid… which is all that really matters for the most part in H2H

  68. The J Train March 5th, 2008 at 12:09 pm

12 teams BA, OBP, R, HR, SB, H, RBI. W, K, ERA, WHIP, SV

  69. saucY March 5th, 2008 at 12:09 pm

i’m not a fan of h2h leagues. i was in one last year and signed up again for the same one this year. the guy who runs the league isn’t the brightest and there was no minimum innings set. the teams that made it to the play-offs and did well hardly ever used any pitchers. this year he put a 6 inning minimum in. i only play because it’s a free league.

and imo, h2h leagues really only work well in football…

  70. Chris -Iowa March 5th, 2008 at 12:14 pm

I’m playing through CBS.. our default scoring system was pretty interesting

  71. Bad Scooter March 5th, 2008 at 12:18 pm

The Twins do have a nice minor league system and I’m sure great scouts. Still the cost of that doesn’t come close to the luxury tax that Pohlad pockets each year. Not even close.

  72. Max March 5th, 2008 at 12:19 pm

A Twins fans coming to a Yankee blog talking smack.

Followed by the obligatory question, “Why”?

They have one of the 5 richest owners in baseball and he won’t spend a dime on his team.

Yet, the fools in Minnesota voted to give him 400 million bucks to build an OPEN AIR stadium in Minnesota.

That will really attract free agents! lol

Instead of talking smack in a Yankee blog, I’d pull out those DVD’s of the good old days of the Twins.

Its all you have going for you these days.

  75. frits March 5th, 2008 at 12:22 pm

one thing you can say about the twins is that they get eternal glory and acclamation for the trade of aj pierzynski. wow.

The Twins new stadium is costing 412 million. 152 million of that is paid by the Twins ownership. 260 is paid by the state. I have a feeling there is some revenue sharing money in there.

  80. Lori March 5th, 2008 at 12:25 pm

Thanks Pat. This is certainly good news.

  81. SJ44 March 5th, 2008 at 12:25 pm

The Twins farm system has gone downhill the last 3 years.

Their drafts haven’t been as productive. Especially since Terry Ryan left the scouting side to be the GM.

They also lost several of their best scouts the last two years because their owner is too cheap to pay them.

Depending on who you believe, that is also one of the reasons cited for Ryan retiring earlier than expected.

They need a good draft this year to get their farm system going again. Its beginning to fall behind and will be exposed even more now with the losses of Hunter and Santana.

  82. MikeEff-Shelley at First March 5th, 2008 at 12:27 pm

    hello everyone.

i’m excited that the twins are sending up mauer morneau and delman young. it’s going to be nice seeing how our guys do against real hitters.

  83. Max March 5th, 2008 at 12:28 pm

Fools. You wait and see. The Twins will post a better record than the Yankees this year. And I bet you the Twins win another World Series Championship before the Yankees do. How many Championships have you bought this century? Uh, zero. That’s right. There are some teery eyed soon to be 8 year olds running around the Bronx complaining their Yankees haven’t won since they’ve been alive. Waaaaa. Too bad. Money can’t buy everything.

  84. Clay Bellinger March 5th, 2008 at 12:30 pm

  86. SJ44 March 5th, 2008 at 12:32 pm

    Oh no, another blog bet.

I guess 2000 doesn’t count as a World Championship “this decade”.

Yeah, I’ll take your bet. The Twins won’t have a better record than the Yankees this year.

I’ll step it up further. They won’t come within 10 games of the Yankees.

  87. MikeEff-Shelley at First March 5th, 2008 at 12:32 pm

i see that a whining child is here to cheer on his decimated team. i feel sorry for you max, not only because you can’t spell, but because you root for a team with a miser for an owner.

“The Twins also had 4 in the Top 100 in 2007, 2006, and 2005. All I am saying is that they do pretty well with what they have considering their payroll.”

The Twins also got players from other teams. Not players who they drafted ie. Boof Bonser and Francisco Liriano who I’m sure figured prominently on those lists.

  89. S.o.S.27 March 5th, 2008 at 12:33 pm

    SJ,
Its not worth wasting your breath on twins talk. Maybe there too damn cheap to have their own blog.

In other news, we picked up another multi talented pitcher to help our team go all the way.

Joe Girardi said Larry Hughes is as sharp as anyone in camp and likes how dedicated he is. “He’s a very focused young man, he wants it bad,” Girardi said. “He doesn’t just want to be a starter. He wants to be a top starter, and that’s good.” Hughes’ injuries last year have been the motivation for his intense winter workouts. “Last year was definitely the most disappointing time I’ve had playing baseball,” Hughes said. “That kind of drives you.” — Newsday

I WONDER IF HE’S RELATED TO HUGHES YOUR DADDY.

  90. Rich March 5th, 2008 at 12:33 pm

I’m at college all afternoon. Is this game streaming online?

  91. mel March 5th, 2008 at 12:33 pm

The Red Sox have a great farm system that starts with their scouting.

They’re really jumping in the game early, scouting teenagers. The only problem is they’re teenage girls. There’s a little piece on the mlb page at espn.com.

Will not post link as it is lewd and lascivious. Scroll through the comments, Yankee fans couldn’t resist taking shots at the “bad apple”.

  92. Max March 5th, 2008 at 12:34 pm

Another thing. Slowey will win more games in 2008 than IPK. And, Morneau/Young will combine for more HRs than ARod/Abreau. Say “hi” to “Big Stein” and tell him I said so right here.

  93. SJ44 March 5th, 2008 at 12:34 pm

Money, your taxpayer money in Minnesota, seems to have bought your 6 billion dollar net worth owner a new stadium.

For someone so consumed about how the Yankees spend their money, how come you aren’t upset at your owner, a guy worth SIX TIMES more than the Steinbrenners, needs clowns like you to vote for him to build a new stadium, open air no less, in Minnesota.

Talk about 8 year olds crying. I suspect we will see a lot of 8 year olds with frostbite after some of those April games in Minnesota when that park opens.

  94. Rich March 5th, 2008 at 12:36 pm

Max = delusional. And I thought Mets fans were dumb.

  95. Jerkface March 5th, 2008 at 12:36 pm

    Morneau – 30 HR
    Young – 15 HR

    A-rod – 50 HR
Abreu – Who cares, you just lost, sucka.

  96. SJ44 March 5th, 2008 at 12:36 pm

You #2 pitcher will win more than the Yankees 5th starter? Gee, that’s outstanding baseball analysis.

He should! lol Too bad he won’t.

I’ll give you this though, Manny’s is a great steakhouse. Best thing you have going for you after the games.

  97. Max March 5th, 2008 at 12:37 pm

SJ44 – 2000 was the last year in 20th centurty smart guy. Last centurty – last decade. Yankees haven’t won squat this centurty or decade.

  98. S.o.S.27 March 5th, 2008 at 12:37 pm

    The real question should be
Do the Yanks have as many first place finishes as the Twins have last place? Do you get used to losing(expected)or does it hurt everytime? Sucks to be you.

    Yankees 2000 Champs.

“SJ44 – 2000 was the last year in 20th centurty smart guy. Last centurty – last decade. Yankees haven’t won squat this centurty or decade.”

    What’s a centurty?

  100. Clay Bellinger March 5th, 2008 at 12:39 pm

    Ray,

I was going off Baseball America’s top 100 of originally drafted players only.

  101. Max March 5th, 2008 at 12:39 pm

SJ44 – Slowey #2? You obviously don’t know anything about the Twins. Baker, Liriano, Bonser, Hernandez – shuffle them how you want – those are the Twins top 5. Slowey is trying to be the #5 same as Kennedy smart guy.

  102. Jerkface March 5th, 2008 at 12:41 pm

Well then he definitely isnt winning as many games.

  103. Max March 5th, 2008 at 12:41 pm

raymagnetic – its the thing that is there alongside a type-o. last i checked, this blog doesn’t have a spell checker Mr. Correct Guy.

  104. velocity March 5th, 2008 at 12:41 pm

Wow Max sure those two things are possible (unlikely but not impossible) but will they make you feel better that your team traded the best pitcher in baseball for nothing and is looking at a 3rd place finish in its division?

  105. MikeEff-Shelley at First March 5th, 2008 at 12:42 pm

max, it is a matter up for debate as to which century the year 2000 belongs. what is not up for debate is that you are a petulant, whiny brat who can neither spell nor come up with any valid reasons why your sadly depleted team will even break .500 this year.

  106. CB March 5th, 2008 at 12:42 pm

    “Fools.”

In the 2006 draft the Twins picked #20 and took Chris Parmalee, an outfielder.

In low A he hit .239 and struck out 27% of his at bats.

The yankees had the pick after Parmalee came off the board and took Ian Kennedy.

They 21 picks after parmalee they took Joba Chamberlain.

Fools. That’s a good word for a Twin fan to be adept at using.

  107. Wander March 5th, 2008 at 12:42 pm

How is 2000 the last year of the 20th century? It’s the beginning of the 21st century? Do you see the 2 followed by the 3 zeros? Yeah that signifies it’s a new century and therefore a new decade. You’re being plum foolish with that one.

How about you stop talking for you team and let each team do their own talking. The yanks and the twins play a lot this season so we’ll see who has the winning record.

  108. frits March 5th, 2008 at 12:42 pm

  109. frits March 5th, 2008 at 12:44 pm

max, if this blog did have a spellchecker that could check for typos, it would have told you that typo is spelled typo, not type-o.

  110. Kevin CT March 5th, 2008 at 12:44 pm

Hey Max, check out this little definition of the current decade:

The 2000s is the current decade, spanning from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2009.

  113. Max March 5th, 2008 at 12:46 pm

Wander: your logic is flawed by the fact that in the first century, as in the first calendar year, they didn’t start in year 0. A century is 100 years. Starting at 1 and going to 100. Not starting at 0 and going to 9. Duh.

  114. MikeEff-Shelley at First March 5th, 2008 at 12:46 pm

dearest max, i’m afraid we can’t provide you with a well needed spell-check here so i’d like to extend our most sincere apology and ask you to leave us now. recess is over and you must get back to kindergarten.

  115. SJ44 March 5th, 2008 at 12:46 pm

After that brief interlude to school an 8 year old Twins fan (is school out this week, or is he just raising the drop out rate in Minnesota?) let’s go back to talking about today’s game.

I’m excited to see the pitching lineup the Yankees are putting out there today. Good chance to see Albaladejo and Ohlendorf in game action along with Joba and Kennedy.

IIRC, Heath Phillips, if he didn’t throw in the intrasquad game this morning, may also get an inning in this one.

  116. Bryan March 5th, 2008 at 12:46 pm

Max’s real name is Millimeter Peter and he just found out everyone else isn’t like him so he is lashing out

  117. jmo March 5th, 2008 at 12:46 pm

max unless the pohlad’s are taking you out on the yacht they bought with the our money (revenue comes from fans not owners) you have no reason to thank us for the money. it certainly never gets spent on the team.

But its always nice to have the twins in the playoffs as a warm-up for the alcs.

  118. Kevin CT March 5th, 2008 at 12:47 pm

    Current Decade:

The United Nations General Assembly has declared the decade of 2000–2009 the “International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World.”[4]

The UN also noted, the Yankees own 1 world championship in the “Decade for Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World. The Twins own none.”

  119. Kevin CT March 5th, 2008 at 12:48 pm

SJ good point. Anyone know who’s slated to throw on Saturday? I’ll be live in Tampa sitting in the new RF seats sipping on a delicious beverage..

  120. Max March 5th, 2008 at 12:49 pm

I think you are way wrong. All of you guys. Its been 8 long years for you money spending babies. Wait and see. Yankees collapse in 2008. Yanks win 83 games. Twins win 85. You shall see!

  121. CB March 5th, 2008 at 12:51 pm

The Twins are playing most of their regulars. Hopefully they stay in until Albaladejo comes into the game.

I’d like to see him facing major league hitters. I like his contro. That was the biggest problem with the pen last year.

It’ll also be interesting to see if Ohlendorf’s second pitch is coming.

On a side note, I’m amused at how there is never a year zero, like 1 BCE leads straight into 1 CE for example; so the 1st century gets shortchanged like that

  128. jason March 5th, 2008 at 12:52 pm

Any chance we can get an update on the intrasquad game? I think Horne and Melancon were among those scheduled to pitch.

  129. Max March 5th, 2008 at 12:53 pm

Kevin CT: so what. 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 – no Championships. Whipped by teams with half the payroll. DBacks. Marlins. Angels. Every year another excuse. Money can’t always buy Championship. But it sure is great when the Yankees lose.

  130. Chris -Iowa March 5th, 2008 at 12:53 pm

  138. Russell NY March 5th, 2008 at 12:56 pm

Guys, Max is not a Twins fan – he is a Red Sox fan, as evident by his posts. Posing as a Twins fan, he believes, gives him credibility in a Yankees chat… because we certainly wouldn’t respect anything he had to say if he was a Sox fan bashing… Ignore him, half of what he says doesn’t make any sense anyway.

Max thinks you can get to the playoffs in the AL with only 85 wins. Okay!

  141. Rich March 5th, 2008 at 12:58 pm

I’m not defending Max, but technically, 2000 was part of the 1990s decade. The first decade began with AD 1 and ended at the end of AD 10. So This decade decade started Jan 1 2001, and will end Dec 31 2010.

Also, since I didn’t get an answer, is this game streaming live anywhere?

    I disagree about Papelbon.

I know fans hate hearing it but, that’s culture of the game. Money is an important part of it and it comes from both sides, players and owners.

I don’t have a problem with what he said because he is talking about bettering the situation for all closers. Not just himself.

What’s more interesting to me is, what the Ryan Howard arbitration case means in the short term for the game.

You have a lot of young stars in the game whose salaries are going to go through the roof in the next 3-4 years.

Guys like Hughes, Chamberlain, Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun, Nick Markakis, Papelbon and Hanley Ramirez. Those are just a few of the guys who will see 8 figure salaries earlier than ever.

It creates a dilemma for small market teams. They play these guys early in the career because they are talented and cheap. Quicker than ever, if they are productive, they will reach salary levels previously only reached through free agency.

    What do they do?

The game is awash with cash. EVERY team is making money. Yes Max, even the Twins posted an eight figure profit last year.

Do these teams continue to cry poormouth? That will be problematic to do when the next Collective Bargaining Agreement is negotiated and the books are reviewed? Or, do they bite the bullet and pay these guys in order to keep them?

IMO, I believe its one reason why the Yankees broke tradition and gave Cano a multi-year deal this early in his career.

It will be interesting to see if other teams, mainly small market teams, follow suit.

If not, guys like Braun, Ramirez, BJ Upton, etc., will be on the trade market in the next few years.

  153. Max March 5th, 2008 at 1:02 pm

Bryan: Max = bored at work: waiting for game to start…

  154. Patrick March 5th, 2008 at 1:02 pm

I think it’s unfair to say Polahd is a cheapskate, his team operates in the red. The twins have lost money for several years. Perhaps once the new stadium is built they will make more money and the Twins will spend more. I can’t forgive them for letting Santana go, though, he’s the kind of talent you pay no matter what.

  155. Jax March 5th, 2008 at 1:03 pm

Max last time I checked this is the year 2008 NOT 1987. You sound idiot. Happy Trails….

  156. raymagnetic â„¢ March 5th, 2008 at 1:04 pm

“Not sure what the argument is here but the 20th century was the time period lasting from Jan 1st 1901 to Dec 31st 2000.”

    In response to this:

There is considerable disagreement about whether to count the centennial year (e.g. 2000) as the first or last year of a century. This confusion is documented for every centennial year from 1500 onward, and almost certainly arises from the introduction of Hindu-Arabic numerals and the concept of zero to Western Europe in the twelfth century.

mlb.com is carrying it for the subscribers, but only the Twins broadcast. Anyone know when our Yankees announcers are getting to work?

  159. Max March 5th, 2008 at 1:06 pm

Santana was greedy. There was a respectable offer on the table that he chose not to take. It makes me ill that people think the Twins were trying to be cheap. At least in trading him away they got some pretty good talent back. The Yankees were never going to give up Hughes. That was a ploy to get the Red Sox to pull the trigger – which they almost did. Hey at least he’s in the NL so neither of us have to face him.

  160. SJ44 March 5th, 2008 at 1:07 pm

His team doesn’t operate in the red. That’s creative accounting.

His team is very profitable. Between the revenue sharing money, MLB licensing money, the XM deal, the network broadcasting deals, and one of the best local/regional TV deals in the industry, they bring in over 70 million per year.

That’s before a ticket is even sold.

    They are doing very well.

  161. CB March 5th, 2008 at 1:08 pm

“What’s more interesting to me is, what the Ryan Howard arbitration case means in the short term for the game.”

Prince Fielder certainly took note of that contract. He wasn’t very happy with the Brewers when they renewed his contract. And Boras is his agent.

It would be nice to have Prince back in yankee stadium hitting the ball out of the park just like he was doing when he was 12 and hanging out with his father at the park.

  162. rb15 March 5th, 2008 at 1:08 pm

Max – who cares? Seriously. Bitter, bitter.

Also, a century runs from 1/1/00 to 12/31/99. The first century got shortchanged, but obviously not really because the year 0000 still existed; just nobody knew it was the year 0000 at the time. They all thought it was 1 BC, except that they didn’t know it was 1 BC because they didn’t know it was BC, because they didn’t know JC was going to be born in 1 AD. It’s not like everyone woke up on 1/1/0001and said “Hey, where did that year go? It was right here yesterday!”

What were we talking about? The Twins? Right. They just aren’t going to be very good this year. Ex-Torii, Ex-Santana, etc. They weren’t even very good when they had Hunter and “Tans.”

Is someone streaming the game online? I have it set to DVR at home, but I could use some midday Joba on this disgustingly rainy and cold day in Boston.

  163. Blargh March 5th, 2008 at 1:08 pm

  164. Max March 5th, 2008 at 1:09 pm

Jax: What does the year have to do with it? The Cardinals didn’t even win 85 in 2006 when they beat the Tigers for the World Series Championship. What team did the Tigers beat again that year? You seem to have convienantly forgotten. Look who’s the idiot now…

  165. 89 March 5th, 2008 at 1:09 pm

    Yea,
I am pretty sure I read an article in the NYTimes about how the owner of the Twins is actually the #3 or #4 richest owner in the league.

Not that I blame him for not spending copious amounts of money into a market that wouldn’t return anything near the outcome of the NY Market… but it sort of, well TOTALLY, takes away the right for a Twins person to call out ‘Big Stein’.

    SJ,

You raise great points, but I’m of the school of kids should be seen, not heard.

He’s got every right to say what he wants, but it really should be behind closed doors.

Contract negotiations through the media are just a pet peeve of mine. Public grumbling after a renewal when there’s nothing you can do about it is another one.

Wang & Joba couldn’t be happy about getting a dollar a day raise over the league minimum. But you don’t hear about it. They know if they do their jobs, keep their jobs, and are loyal to the organization, their payday will come and their families will be taken care of for generations.

Papelbon? Maine? Whine, whine, whine. They have every right, but you’ll never see the great ones do it.

And Papelbon sees himself as a martyr for closers? That role’s already occupied. Mariano and the ridiculous money that the YANKEES pay him raises the scale for closer money, not Papelbon fighting for a raise in his very young career.

Not arguing with you, but airing your laundry in public like that just raises my heckles. I’ll get off my soapbox now and enjoy the game. :)
