the relationship that Andy has built with the young guys is exactly why it was a great idea to bring him back to NY.

of course, the guy is going to give you everything he has on the mound, and help give the team quality innings and a chance to win every game he takes the ball… but he’s also a leader in that clubhouse who has been through the NY ringer himself as a young developing pitcher, and it’s great to see Hughes, Chamberlain, IPK, and others take advantage of his knowledge and experience.

Pete, nice article on the big 3. They’re not the future THEY’RE THE PRESENT. oh thats so right. good line as always. enjoy your day.

  3. Jim PA

There’s a college of pitching knowledge in that clubhouse for those kids, with Andy, Moose and Mo. AND…all three are eager to share their experience. Take notes, boys.

    Great column, Pete.

(Inveterate? Let’s not make a habit of using these big words, OK?)

  5. Chris

Anyone know how i can watch this on my pc here at work? I remember using sopcast a tiny bit the end of last year but i totally forgot how or which site to get it all from.

  6. hmmm

hey Pete, what gives? according to this article, Joba will not be making the minimum this year:

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/03052008/sports/yankees/matsui_could_sit_for_10_more_days_100572.htm

“Joba Chamberlain’s contract was renewed by the Yankees yesterday. Chamberlain, who made a pro-rated $380,000 ($116,105) last year when he accumulated 55 service days, will make in the area of $420,000 this season.

… Cashman did say the Yankees used the same system with Chamberlain that they have for years which affixes a dollar for every day of big league service and that total is added to the minimum salary ($390,000) this year. “

Looking forward to watching today’s game and seeing Kennedy and Joba pitch.

    This from the Post article:

“Robinson Cano didn’t make the trip due to a dentist appointment where Girardi anticipated Cano getting “more than one” filling.”

Does Gene Monahan have flossing classes for the young foriegn players?

  9. YanksAngel

Didn’t Cano miss some time last year with dental problems, or was that someone else?

  10. Big Apple Salute

I concur with TurnTwo. Andy Pettitte gives back to the game. Many veteran pitchers would never consider taking the time to be up before the sun rises, be at the ballpark just after 8:00 AM, and show some eager young pitchers the correct ways to condition themselves toward betterment of their careers.

So if Sean Henn doesn’t make the team out of camp, we risk him signing with another team since he is out of options.

Is there anyone else in camp that this would be the case for?

  12. Bronx Liaison

I two agree with TurnTwo. Sox fans can hate on Pettitte all they want, his true colors shine through quickly and genuinely. Having him to tutor the trinity will be a great blessing.

  13. Mark Alan

    saucY…

Maybe Pavano. (Wouldn’t that be sweet?)

  14. CountryClub

The great thing about the workouts is that even when Pettitte is gone; at least 2 (if not all 3) of the kids should still be on the team pushing each other. The risk of one of them getting lazy is minimal. They all know that they’ll be getting compared to each other on a yearly basis. It’s good to see Horne and Karstens joining in too.

  15. YankeesBen

saucY I think the same go’s for Bruney.

  16. YankeesBen

saucY I think the same go’s for Bruney. My guess is the last three spots go’s for Karstens, Traber, and either Ohlendorf or Veras.

  17. CB

“Is there anyone else in camp that this would be the case for?”

I believe Bruney is also out of options. If Bruney and Henn don’t make the team they will have to be traded or waived.

Most of the other guys in the pen still have options. On the lefty reliever front both Traber and Phillips both have options (though I’m not sure if they would have to take a minor league assignment).

Also, I think they signed Bruney to an $725,000 this off season. He was arbitration eligible as I remember and they basically had to sign him or waive him then.

I hope that issues like Bruney/ Henn running out of options or Bruney’s contract don’t influence the yankees decision making for the pen.

They need to get out to a strong start and if those two don’t perform during spring training I don’t want the yankees to yet again give them a shot or see what they can do to start the season.

  18. whozat

I think Bruney’s spot is his to lose. I think Ohlendorf goes to AAA to get more relief experience and work on his splitter, while Veras and Bruney are fighting for the other-righty-who-throws-hard slot. Neither of them has shown impressive control in his career, and I think Bruney’s contract situation gives him a leg up.

Rasner is on a minor league deal right now, right? So he doesn’t have to be waived to be sent to the minors?

  19. DMan

I think Billy Traber will make the team.. Hes pitched real solid so far, especially agaisnt lefties..

    JUST JOKING

“Andy is the kind of guy who shares what he does, and you’re crazy not to take advantage of it.”

uh oh… Andy, don’t give the HGH to the kids!!

    JUST JOKING

  21. Matt

Keeping players on the roster because they’re out of options is not a valid reason.
Joe Girardi wants the best 25 players to leave spring training and if Bruney and Henn are 2 of the 25 it will have to be because they earned the spots.

  22. whozat

“Keeping players on the roster because they’re out of options is not a valid reason.”

I think that’s a little naive. If that’s the ONLY reason, you’re certainly right.

But I think it’s valid to have it be part of the evaluation process. I mean…if you have Veras and Bruney, and their spring performances are similar…but if you cut Bruney, you lose him to another team…then what do you do?

I mean, spring numbers are nice, but far from the last word in predicting regular season performance. Both of these guys have a track records of striking guys out, walking guys, and giving up homers. If they both strike guys out and keep their walks down this spring, but Veras walks a couple fewer guys…Well, maybe he faced a few more minor leaguers, or maybe Bruney had a pair of really awful games where his mechanics weren’t right yet, or, or, or.

Point is, all other things being similar, I think it’s perfectly reasonable to keep a guy on the roster who’s out of options over a guy you can send to the minors. If he still stinks at the end of April, ship him out and bring up the guy you sent down.

  23. saucY

thanks for the responses. i read in the last thread last night that Henn was out of options, but was curious about anyone else.

and i agree that it shouldn’t influence their decision in having them make the team or not.

  24. raymagnetic ™

So even Hideki Matsui is not sure if Igawa’s pitches are good enough for major league hitters? Ouch! And oh yeah Pete, tell Tyler Kepner not to steal your line about Yogi jumping into another players arms.

“Joe Girardi wants the best 25 players to leave spring training…”

Explain why Kyle Farnsworth is a lock to make this team?

Girardi has been very vocal about his support for Farnsworth since the day he took the managerial job.

He’s essentially said that Farnsworth had success when I caught him in Chicago and I think I can unlock that secret over the course of the season.

He’s made Farnsworth his personal project. That’s his prerogative as manager but many people keep saying that Girardi will only base his evaluation of players based on performance.

There’s no evidence for this to be true. And with Farnsworth there is evidence against Girardi being this results only guy. Farnsworth has a very long and unimpressive track record. Another good spring training isn’t going to change what he is.

But he’s been guaranteed a spot on the roster by Girardi regardless of his performance.

It seems to people are projecting onto Girardi how they want the club to be run rather than what we’ve seen him do so far. Many of the people who didn’t like Torre are just projecting Girardi to be the “anti-Torre” of sorts.

By that I mean they are making Girardi out to be a guy who will never show veterans favor based on experience, will only select use guys based on bottom line results, won’t be reluctant to use young players, etc.

That could be true. But we’ve seen no evidence for it.

Now he’s just getting started. But the point is there’s no way to definitively say things like Girardi only wants the 25 best player, etc, etc.

You just don’t know. We do know however that Farnsworth is going to be on this roster and that he in no way warrants a lock on a spot on this team based on his past performance.

His contract comes into play obviously, but again Farnsworth is not going to make this team based on his performance. He’s going to make this team DESPITE his track record of performance.

And that’s going to have a great deal to do with Girardi’s evaluation.

Girardi’s basically picking Farnsworth because he knows Farnsworth, Farnsworth has experience, and Girardi says he “sees” something in Kyle.

Those are all Girardi’s prerogatives. But that doesn’t sound all that different from the way the team was run before.
