Wrapping it up from Legends Field

Shelley Duncan got into the game and was 1 for 2 with another home run. He is 7 of 11 with two homers and nine RBI this season. Alas, the Yankees lost 7-5.

“He’s taking advantage of every opportunity,” Joe Girardi said. “He’s done all you can ask a man to do.”

Ian Kennedy and Joba Chamberlain were philosophical about their rough outings. “It was bound to happen and it’s going to happen again,” Chamberlain said. “This game is about failure.”

Good guy Johnny Damon gathered up some players (including Kennedy) to visit the VA Hospital in Tampa after the game.

Meanwhile, Girardi opened a care package from Mike’s Deli on Arthur Ave. in the Bronx. There were about a dozen sandwiches, some cheeses and some salami. It looked delicious.

The manager was nice enough to invite us to partake but we had to get back upstairs and get to work.

If you’ve never been to Arthur Ave., make it a point to go. Little Italy in the Bronx has a bunch of terrific places to eat and it’s a short trip from the Stadium.

Shelly is the next David Ortiz. He has closed the holes in his swing over the offseason and will be hitting in the 3 hole by the end of May. Count on him for .320/40/125 – you heard it here first.

  2. Rob March 5th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

(Shelley) – typing mistake in my last post – sorry.

  3. Don V. March 5th, 2008 at 5:12 pm

How close is it to the stadium?

  6. JDnotDrew March 5th, 2008 at 5:14 pm

Did anyone know Giambi had those ups? Wow and that bullet to third from the Melkman, special delivery.

  7. Salute !!! March 5th, 2008 at 5:15 pm

If Crazy Eddie were still around he would say, ” Italian Ristorantes on Arthur Aveue are ….. IN-SANE “!!!!!!

  8. emobacca March 5th, 2008 at 5:15 pm

Ahhhh it must be nice to be the Yankee manager

  9. Jeteupthemiddle March 5th, 2008 at 5:15 pm

Ok, last time I promise. I just felt it would be better to be at the top of the comments instead of buried at the bottom of a dead discussion.

If anyone would like to participate in a Joba Chamberlain community projection (where you predict his stats for the 2008 season), please do so at my blog.

    http://jeteupthemiddle.blogspo.....-2008.html

My goal is to get a bigger sample size than I did last year.

I don’t care how you come about your numbers, just please try and make them realistic don’t predict 270 innings in 30 starts and 0 earned runs.

  10. gayle March 5th, 2008 at 5:15 pm

Jennifer it is VERY VERY far away you really dont want to go there.

  11. SJ44 March 5th, 2008 at 5:16 pm

After every Yankee afternoon game I go to, I end up at either Mario’s or Dominick’s on Arthur Ave. after the game.

Top it off with a Cannoli from the pastry shop next to Dominick’s and its a winning day.

  12. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! March 5th, 2008 at 5:16 pm

I just looked and saw it was far. Is it in a bad neighborhood?

  13. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 5th, 2008 at 5:16 pm

I’m going to the City on Saturday, will have to check it out.

  14. gayle March 5th, 2008 at 5:17 pm

Just joking it is relatively close about 5-10 minutes by car the restaurants are amazing. I did not discover it until last year and couldnt believe that I had never been there. Living i n Northern NJ will never make the trip into the city for Little italy again just go to the Bronx much closer and just as good.

  15. Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 5th, 2008 at 5:18 pm

    test….

  16. Joe M March 5th, 2008 at 5:18 pm

It’s not in the best of areas but it’s not terrible. Fordham University is about five minutes away

  17. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 5th, 2008 at 5:19 pm

    Will try this again.

Am headed into the city on Saturday, will have to check it out.

  18. gayle March 5th, 2008 at 5:19 pm

SJ I am with you go there after Saturday games Dominicks is amazing shame they dont take reservations so the wait can be bad but it is worth the wait for sure.

  19. Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 5th, 2008 at 5:19 pm

    Hello?

  20. Joe M March 5th, 2008 at 5:19 pm

  21. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 5th, 2008 at 5:19 pm

    hola?

  22. Rebecca March 5th, 2008 at 5:20 pm

Hey, guys, this blog doesn’t want to let me post.

  23. Tim March 5th, 2008 at 5:22 pm

    My thoughts on the game:

    1. Phillips looked really good, he could be a legit candidate for the Loogy.

    2. Betemit and Giambi look like different players from last year, Betemit – defensively is moving much better and Giambi both defensively and going the other way a lot better offensively, if healthy Giambi will have a huge year imo.

    3. Joba, wasn’t the Joba we were used to seeing last season but he was working on several pitches, ie, his curve ball and changeup. When he comes in in a setup role he simply relies on his 96-99mph heater and the devastating slider, and he is so dominating with those 2 pitches it is understandable that many want to see him remain in the bullpen. Imo he will be more dominant in the bullpen.

    4. Duncan – what can you say, it will be hard to keep him out of the lineup this season, imo, especially if Matsui is on the DL for any extended period of time. Nice guy to have off the bench.

    5. No way Ramirez makes the 25 man squad imo, today showed why, he is just too inconsistent. When the squad expands to 40 players in September maybe, but I will really be surprised if he pitches in the Bronx until then.

    6. Olendorf is the leader in the clubhouse for the 12 spot in the bullpen imo, he is just nasty.

    7. Britton does what he always does, not flashy at all but gets the job done.

    8. And finally on ESPN, interesting take by Peter Pascorelli, he picks the Yankees to win the East, and Boston to not make the playoffs, Sutcliffe almost choked on his chowdah! “why, why don’t you see the Redsox making it? he asked increduously, Peter answered to the effect that he isn’t sold on their pitching staff, that Dice-k looked awful recently, and he said that the Yanks are waiting in the weeds and will win the division. He said that Yankee higher ups predict big things from Hughes and that Wang and Pettitte and Kennedy will be solid. Let’s hope he’s right!

  24. gayle March 5th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

Also recommend Pasquales 2311 Arthur Ave yummy

  25. Patrick March 5th, 2008 at 5:29 pm

Pete you could not be more right about Arthur ave, I go to Fordham and live on the street parallel to Arthur, we visit Mike’s on a weekly basis, the ave is packed after games with tons of Yankees fans it’s awesome!

  26. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 5th, 2008 at 5:30 pm

Tim–I actually think Toronto has a better rotation than Boston.

  27. dana March 5th, 2008 at 5:37 pm

Arthur Avenue is pretty much all old school Mafia – making it one of the safest areas in the city. You could park a brand new Bentley on the street with the keys in it & no one will touch it.

  28. Jay March 5th, 2008 at 5:39 pm

Tim, maybe you should wait before you bury Edwar and promote Phillips. It’s one inning in a spring training game. Just like Joba’s results are no big deal because he’s still working on things, the same holds true for Edwar. This guy is a dead strikeout pitcher — that’s valuable to have on your team. He has an insane changeup and good velocity (despite what people may say). He has control issues, but they can be worked on. The problem with sending Edwar back to AAA is that he has nothing to prove there anymore; he totally dominated those hitters.

Is it possible someone who’s been in New York hasn’t been to Arthur Ave.? I used to have to send stuff from there to my Gramps in Florida because he couldn’t find good Italian cheeses and sausages there.

  29. Patrick Bateman March 5th, 2008 at 5:53 pm

Make sure you gel your hair and wear a leather coat if you go to any Arthur Avenue restaurant. Many of the restaurants have no menus or prices, so if you look like you’re “one of us” you won’t get charged as much as Eli from Long Island sitting at the table next to you.

  30. Chick Stahl March 5th, 2008 at 6:04 pm

“One of us”: Patrick Bateman’s theme song.

  31. saucY March 5th, 2008 at 6:13 pm

i’ll be in the city on Saturday too.

Maybe i’ll stop in the bronx for lunch. sounds great.

  32. Gus G. March 5th, 2008 at 6:19 pm

Dont know if anyone is listening but Sweeney Murti is ripping Mike and Mad Dog about Joba. They think the Yanks are stupid for wanting to use him as a starter. Sweeney came in guns a-blazing! Good TV (and/or radio)

  33. Buddy Biancalana March 5th, 2008 at 6:19 pm

Am I the only person to watch that video clip?

  34. Buddy Biancalana March 5th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

    Gus-

Anyway to listen to it streaming?

  35. MikeEff - Shelley at First March 5th, 2008 at 6:23 pm

  36. Derek - RETIRE 21!!! March 5th, 2008 at 6:28 pm

Dissappointed guys, Pete Abe OBVIOUSLY setup a seinfeld joke here so ill go ahead and enlighten…

Do they have good calzones here like the ones Big Stein requests from Paesano’s???

  37. saucY March 5th, 2008 at 6:29 pm

i’ll be in the city on Saturday too… maybe i’ll go early so i can check it out and maybe get lunch…

  38. Doreen March 5th, 2008 at 6:31 pm

    Gus G -

I’m sorry I didn’t stick around to hear Sweeney. I had them on in the background and caught bits of the “the Yankees have no idea what they’re doing with Joba” conversation and switched to the ‘Showtunes’ channel. I’m glad Sweeney laid into them! They have no idea what they’re talking about. And are so positive about it, too. What exactly did Sweeney say??

  39. saucY March 5th, 2008 at 6:32 pm

    hello!?!

  40. Fran March 5th, 2008 at 6:42 pm

I love going to Arthur Avenue. I had lunch there today at Ann and Tony’s. Pasquales that Gayle recommended is also good and they have a parking lot around the corner. Parking can be difficult around there.

  41. Hideki Balboni March 5th, 2008 at 6:51 pm

“[Duncan] is 7 of 11 with two homers and nine RBI this season.”

What, the season has started already???!!!

  42. Gus G. March 5th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Not sure about the streaming… I have a TV in my office so I never had to worry about it.

Yeah, they were going on about how he’d be a waste as a starter because hes special in the 8th inning. Sweeney came in talking loudly and shortly and essentially said, he’ll be a great starter, hes a waste in bullpen, and that you both are idiots (ok, he didnt say that but you could tell he just wanted to shout it.)

  43. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! March 5th, 2008 at 7:45 pm

I am listening to Sweeney on Mike and the Mad Puppy. Does Mike ever shut up? Sweeney is trying to answer questions and he keeps interrupting him. I don’t understand why Mike and the rapid puppy doesn’t understand why they are stretching Joba to begin with.

  44. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! March 5th, 2008 at 7:46 pm

Why would you waste a guy like Joba in the pen, as an 8th inning guy. When he has the potential to be an ACE!!

  45. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! March 5th, 2008 at 7:51 pm

Wow Mike is an idiot. You can’t compare minor league numbers to major league numbers. They never saw him before that is why he had such a low era.

  46. Doreen March 5th, 2008 at 8:00 pm

You have to wonder how much actual baseball those two watch. There’s got to be something else that YES can air in the afternoon, can’t there be? They are so infuriating. But, they do have an audience.

  47. Kelli in Conn. March 5th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

I hope that nobody wrecks my day by posting that Carl Pavano is frequently seen on Arthur Avenue.

  48. Onkel Bob March 5th, 2008 at 8:53 pm

The frau is an Italian but she never leaves the Upper East Side. In her defense she’s also a research scientist who works in the lab 80 to 100 hours a week(!) so she doesn’t get out at all much.
Anywho… a friend of ours went to Arthur on a weekly basis so I’d get her to pick up food and stuff for us. (I do the cooking, I learned how from my life traveling the world and from mamma Selleri, the frau mom.) Unfortunately she’s since moved to Texas(!) as the hubby got an appointment at M.D. Anderson. I guess I’ll have to start going myself…

  49. SJ44 March 6th, 2008 at 8:56 am

The problem with Francesa is, unlike Russo whose whole sctick is an act and he knows it, Francesa actually believes his own BS.

Phil Mushnick outing him for the fraud that he is weekly in the Post is required reading. He did another great job of it this past Monday.

Unfortunately, sports talk radio has become a wasteland for idiots. Its void of any substantative conversation about sports. Its just screaming proclaimations from clueless talk show hosts to miserable fans. It jumped the shark 10 years ago.

Francesa also spent an entire football season telling anybody who listened that Eli Manning was, “not a leader” and, “not a winner”.

When Eli won a Super Bowl, Francesa then told the world he “always knew Eli had it in him”.

He should just put clown makeup on and do his show. He would have more credibility than sucking down 20 Diet Cokes a shift and getting frustrated with callers who have the nerve to question his authority.

He doesn’t have the foggiest idea of what he is talking about on virtually every subject he tackles. Especially the Yankees.

Glad Sweeney finally stepped up and said his piece instead of letting both those clowns trample his segment with their nonense.

Some may think it makes for “great” radio. All it really does it make people who are actually tuning in for Yankee info change the station.
