Fractured wrist for Cervelli

Peter Abraham
March

The Yankees just announced that Francisco Cervelli fractured his right wrist and was placed in a cast. No timetable for his return.

Keep an eye on Wednesday’s game against the Rays.

That stinks. It wasn’t Cervelli’s day, was it? First hit by a wicked pitch, and then the collision at the plate. Let’s hope he’s a fast healer so he doesn’t miss much time.

Now, what will the Yankees do with regards to their catching situation? They can’t just have Molina and Posada for the duration of spring training, can they? Especially with Posada not 100%.

  2. Elizabeth----FarnsWORTHIT

    Thanks ever so much, Rays.

  3. Rhapsody in Blue

    Terrible news.

  4. Scott

That really sucks and should make for an interesting game on Weds.

Pete – any chance they recall Montero from the minor league camp?

  5. MikeEff - Shelley at First

doreeen, they still have anson and a couple of other guys…

  6. YANKEE BIAS

I’ve watched the play a bunch of times now and the most amazing thing is that he was able to hold onto the ball. It’s very unfortunate, however.

  7. pat

    Doreen

I think I remember Pete saying Montero and Romine were sent back to the Minor League side but there should still be 2 or 3 other minor league/non roster catchers still in camp.

  8. YANKEE BIAS

    Dorreen and MikeEff,

P.J. Pilittere is also at camp.

  9. Jeff NJ

    the Rays will pay.

  10. Doreen

Thanks, guys. I don’t even try to keep track of who’s there! :)

  11. Jeff

Someone has to pay. Hopefully we go 19-0 against them. They aren’t called the Dirty Rays for nothing.

  12. Wander

This game is going to be a heated one.

  13. Phil Hughes is Saved!

    That sucks

  14. Jane

    Well crap.

While I do agree that it was fair play, I FULLY endorse a full-on retaliation, preferably during the regular season, preferably a play at the home plate against their starting catcher.

There’s no sense in getting back during spring training. I hope Girardi does a “Toronto Blue Jay” type retaliation. Act like it’s ok in your next meeting and then hit them hard when they least expect it. Do it, Joe. I got tickets to that game.

  15. pat

The Yanks have had a really healthy camp so far and the last thing they need is to get players hurt with payback. Everyone needs to keep their head about them when they meet again.

  16. Rhapsody in Blue

I’ve felt we’ve lacked intensity playing the Rays the past few years, maybe something like this could ignite a flame.

  17. Russell W

“There’s no sense in getting back during spring training. I hope Girardi does a “Toronto Blue Jay” type retaliation. Act like it’s ok in your next meeting and then hit them hard when they least expect it. Do it, Joe. I got tickets to that game.”

    That’s hilarious.

  18. Russell W

I say recruit Chuck Norris as a pinch runner for a play at the plate.

  19. CaptainsCorner

Absolutely disgusting!! Hopefully he gets better quickly. He will be out 6-8 weeks. The Yanks won’t forget that and they shouldn’t.

  20. Guiseppe Franco

As I said on the earlier thread, you could tell that both Cervelli and Girardi knew this injury was serious.

It’s a shame something like that has to happen in a ST game.

I guess we’re gonna see Girardi’s brand of old country hardball sooner than expected since most of us probably thought the first dose would be against the Red Sox.

  21. Fran

Girardi was really angry. I am sure that the Yankees won’t forget this. I feel bad for Cervelli. Didn’t he get a broken right hand in winter ball?

  22. NY

    Yankees Bias,
Where can i see video of the hit….i am in Miami and I do not get the YES Network??

  24. vinny-b

cervelli, is a very highly regarded prospect. At least, by me and several others.

could this threaten his career ?

  25. Stan

Next Wednesday and next Saturday vs. the Rays. Stay tuned.

  26. LCâ„¢

    wonderful

  27. EY

How dare such a lowly team as do Rays injure one of our players.

Joe G should have Farnsy/Joba pitch and start Shelley at 1st base. Run some guys down.

  28. ryanloghry

Does anyone have a link to the video? Please post it.

  29. Dee

“With the time that I had there, the instinct was to slide and be out, or hit him and see if I could pop the ball loose,” Johnson said.

This was reported on the MLB site. It was an intentional hit on Johnson’s part. I consider this a dirty play especially during ST.

  30. Will

The plate was blocked and the kid (Johnson) did what he had to do to try to score. That’s what baseball players do. If he didn’t hustle, he’d be getting an earful. It wasn’t a dirty play; he was doing his job. It was bad luck that Cervelli got hurt on the play. Unlike a beaning, there was no intent to injure; he was just trying to score. If the Yankees’ pitchers start beaning Rays hitters, the pitchers and Girardi should be promptly suspended.

  31. Jax

Devil Rays suck and they’ll once again have a top 5 pick. Losers!

  32. Andrea - anti-anti

Winning the game isn’t what’s of the utmost in Spring Training. Girardi said that if this were the regular season, he’d understand, but it’s Spring Training. There’s no reason for that crap in ST.

  33. Jane

Hold on people. It’s fair play. It’s within the rules. If that Johnson guy was on the Yankee roster, we would be defending the play.

It was somewhat stupid and overzealous. And Yanks should be allowed to get back – send a message that they have to be careful. 1 solid beaning or hard slide to 2nd or over the homeplate should conventionally be allowed and would be enough. Repeated beanings will definitely warrant a suspension.

  34. The Central Scrutinizer

If you want to see the hit go to mlb.com click on multimedia guide click on 400K A next to NYY vs TAM line and you can watch the whole game. You could also drag the player bar to about the 3 hour nine minute mark and get right to the hit.

  35. Doreen

    Will -

He was hustling, but barreling into the catcher in a ST game is overkill. I didn’t like it when Pete Rose did it in an All-Star game, and I don’t like it here.

Now, from another point of view, the “Rays” are a team that have not had much success, but are in a position this season to show they’re now a team to contend with. They are coming out of the shoot ready to go, and that’s commendable. They are making the statement that they are to be taken seriously. That in itself is not inherently wrong. It is a matter of degree, however.

  36. Mike R. - The Anti-Anti

I want some serious retaliation. I want Evan longoria to take 95 MPH heat to the ankle. I want blood!!

  37. anti-mussina

evan longoria 101 mph heater to the head from farnsworth. i want him to have a career ending concussion.

  38. Andrea - anti-anti

“Hold on people. It’s fair play. It’s within the rules. If that Johnson guy was on the Yankee roster, we would be defending the play.”

Statements like this are made all the time, and in this situation, and many others, I really don’t think a Yankee would do something like this. Maybe Shelley Duncan might hurt someone, but I don’t know if that would be intentional ;) .

But seriously, I don’t think a Yankee would barrel into a catcher like that.

  39. Joe from Long Island

A couple of points about the Cervelli injury:

    1. Joe Girardi has been in professional baseball for twenty years or so, and has an apparent reputation for being straightforward. I would think he knows the appropriate “etiquette” for spring training games, at least a lot more so than fans (I’m including myself in this category). Therefore, the fact that Joe is upset about this says a lot to me.

    2. The fact that Joe Maddon didn’t want to talk to the reporters says a lot, also. One of my mentors once told me “Don’t do anything that you’ll be embarrassed to talk about in public.” One of his peers has issues with his style. Why doesn’t Joe Maddon want to talk about this, and answer the questions? Isn’t the injury of a young player, even on another team, worrisome?

  40. Andrea - anti-anti

wait. Is his name really Evan Longoria?

  41. Doreen

Oh, man, I meant out of the “chute” not “shoot!”

  42. Dee

I think it was dirty and disagree with those who say Johnson was doing the right thing to win a spot.

It’s uncalled for b/c it’s the 9th inning of a ST game when the Rays already had the lead. Also, based on his own quote, Johnson knew he couldn’t get there in time to score a fair run so he decided to hit Cervelli to knock the ball out. If he wanted to show his manager he has enough skills to make the roster, try running faster. He wasn’t trying out for a defensive tackle spot.

  43. Doreen

    Andrea -

    Yes, but no relation. :)

During the regular season, I sure hope a Yankee player will try to score like that!

  44. Guiseppe Franco

evan longoria 101 mph heater to the head from farnsworth. i want him to have a career ending concussion.

Don’t be an idiot. Retaliation is fine as long as Johnson gets drilled in the @ss with a heater and be done with it.

It sucks that it happened but it’s not like they were headhunting and hurt A-Rod or Jeter.

  45. Whitey Fraud

They are DEVIL Rays! A pox on their house. Voodoo on their doodoo!

  46. vinny-b

is there a doctor in the house ?

the important question is, is this a threat to Cervelli’s career ?

  47. Big Joe

Don’t do it during ST. Wait for a game at yankee Stadium then just plow them and bean them. We should not do in ST what we say they should not do in ST. Save it for the year when the game is on and everyone knows it. Have Joba bean one then bring in Farnsy to bean the next one. By the way every slide into 2nd the yanks make against the Rays should have “spikes up”.

I live in Tampa and Maddon is a worthless zero. He does not preach respect or accountability in his team. Thats why they had to trade Delmon and Dukes. Because Maddon has no control or respect in that clubhouse.

Hell bring in Pavano for one pitch to “lose” one right into the Rays dugout…just don’t hit Zimmer!

  48. Victor the Predictor

Watch the Rays take a coward approach and make Elliot Johnson part of roster cuts by Wednesday.

  49. Jane

Hmm.. I don’t think the kid had any intention of causing an injury. I’m not defending what happened. He did what would have been appropriate in the situation, if the game mattered.

Which it didn’t. Which is why I think it’s stupid and warrants retaliation. And Maddon is a d0uche.

  50. A Time To Kill

    I’m furious, too.

I have your home addresses, Johnson and Maddon.

  51. Fran

Maddon thought it was a good play and showed hustle. After the media spoke to Girardi and heard how upset he was they went back to Maddon and he refused to talk to the reporters.

  52. Jonathan

You have awoken a sleeping giant you scumtan rays. Now you will pay. You have hurt one of our young and now your young is going down. Get ready b/c sleepy Joe is no longer at the helm and with the new joe there will be hell to pay

  53. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! anti-anti

Victor I was thinking the same thing. How about we get Carl Crawford back for the ’stros, and the ’stros could get Johnson back for us.

And everyone is missing everyone’s point here. If it is a regular season game while I wouldn’t like it, it is part of the game. But in a st game, it isn’t the right thing to do. And if you read what Joe said, he said the same thing.

  54. big Joe

I just watched it. That play has no business in ST. None…Period! Slide in hard but no barreling into guys in ST. Terrible.

  55. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! anti-anti

He must have thought he was a football player, maybe he missed his calling.

  56. devil rays forever

HIT CARL CRAWFORD DIRECTLY IN THE HEAD AND KNOCK HIM OUT. i am so sick of him running at us at will.

  57. BBB

I posted this in the other thread but in case people are no longer checking that one…who was the Astros catcher that Crawford ran over the other day Was it Towles?

Anyway, Giambi and/or Shelley will make Elliot Johnson pay, book it.

  58. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! anti-anti

I wonder how livid Joe is, if we are this mad. He must be stewing.

  59. big Joe

Nah not crawford. They have decent backup outfielders to fill in. They have 0 depth at Catcher. Take out Dioner. A catcher for a catcher, plus that way they don’t go after Jetes. We want to end it not just turn up the heat another notch.

  60. BBB

“He must have thought he was a football player”

Kinda like Sean Casey huh? I think it’s payback time for him too this year, especially considering the team he is on now!

So, the Yankee retribution list now consists of: Crawford, Casey, Elliot Johnson, the D-rays in general, and Matt Stairs. All I can say is, it’s on!!!

  61. Lokomo69

Man… no remorse from Johnson… it’s like he doesnt care that he could have endangered a young players career in a SPRING TRAINING game… what an A$$ Hole

  62. big Joe

You can see Joe G in the video and it looks like his jaw muscles were in spasm, he was biting down so hard, trying to stay cool. He was pissed! no question.

You’re being kind, it’s actually more like fifth fiddle! I think even playing second fiddle to the Astros is too big a reach for those losers.

  69. westchester dave

One way to get revenge and make a point would be for Joe to bring only the players who will not make the team to the next ST road game at the Rays, making the point that it isn’t safe to bring the real team to play in their backyard.

  70. WangFan88

Just in case all of you angry people forgot, Cervelli is our third string catcher. It’s going to be okay.

  71. BBB

Maybe Joe should just send Great Britton, Big Bad Brian Bruney or Krazy Kyle in to pinch run the next time a Yankee reaches 3b with Elliot Johnson behind the plate?

  72. MikeEff - Shelley at First

    There Will Be Blood!

  73. angry

its not who cervelli is, its the point that they have run over and broken the wrist of OUR 22 year old backup catcher. so you are telling me if that was jorgie in there it would be kosher?

  74. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti)

WangFan at 21 he was our 3rd catcher making big impressions on Girardi, he loved him, most likely could have been a call up. He is one of our top prospects and that was a sh***y move by Madden, there is no way this stays unanswered

  75. angry

wangfan grow a set of ba-ls

  76. BBB

Yeah, it’s basically an issue of respect and principle, not so much of catcher/roster depth. I’m not worried about the depth esp. since if we ever needed an emergency catcher, Shelley would do it…without equipment! :) (as Torre once comically remarked in a postgame)

Well anyway, at least we don’t have to wonder whether or not Joe G will defend his players and avenge the incident!

  77. murphydog

JMO…I can understand the kid from the Rays trying to impress his team and manager. He fouled up but was his manager supposed to throw him under the bus? Maddon has to back up his guys. Johnson wasn’t trying to fracture Cervelli’s wrist.

Maddon should, however, call Girardi and apologize ASAP for his kid being overaggressive and ask how Cervelli is doing and Johnson should call Cervelli and apologize also ASAP. Girardi can let Maddon have an earful if he wants in private but then accept the apology and let it go. If Maddon and Johnson don’t make their phone calls, then it’s on them. The old timers in the league will notice the lack of class and protocol.

As for retaliation, Girardi’s already had his say in the media and he basically called Maddon out. But it’s not like Johnson is a famous head case like Dimitri Young who ran someone over in ST a couple of years ago. That guy you do something to because he has priors. But not Johnson. And Girardi has no beef with what Crawford did to the ‘Stros, it’s none of his business. IMO Joe G needs to cool off or else everybody else will be trying to get his goat and see if they can get him to forget his game plan and go looking for fights.

  78. vinny-b

it have everythin to do, with who Cervelli is. He projected to be a jason kendall, level catcher. Excellent defensive catcher, and a very promising hitter.

hopefully, this will not adversely affect, his future.

  79. Doreen

    murphydog -

I seriously do not understand where the people here are getting the idea that Girardi will retaliate for this. I’m with you – he had his say, emphatically, in the media. This is a ST game and not a time to over-react. It is awful that Cervelli got badly hurt. It would be worse to make this into WW3.

Frankly, I’m pretty sure that the same people who are calling Johnson out for playing hard would have been applauding any Yankee player’s “toughness” if they’d done the same thing.

  80. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! anti-anti

Girardi said he was aware of the Houston play. A former Major League catcher, Girardi said he understands plays at the plate will happen during the season, but he believes they are inappropriate for Spring Training. In fact, he said one Yankees player asked the new manager about that topic before exhibition games started.

    Girardi’s response: Absolutely not.

    Spring Training
    Complete coverage >

“I’ve always known that you don’t do it,” Girardi said. “I know kids are playing aggressive and playing hard. That’s how you want them to play. But maybe if it happens too much, you should mention something.”

    http://mlb.mlb.com/news/articl.....p;c_id=nyy

  81. Westerner99

Girardi won’t retaliate…but all it takes is one player to be angry about it and the situation flares up. A pitcher takes it upon himself to throw inside, etc.

  82. pat

As I said in the last thread, Girardi will not risk a Yankee player getting hurt in some sort of retaliation.

Sometimes the fear of retaliation is worse than it actually happening.

  83. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! anti-anti

Pat don’t be shocked if a fb slips out of the hands of someone and drills someone in the ribs.

  84. Westerner99

Or the flip side is that the media blares the incident in the headlines and never lets it go and keeps instigating it and bringing it up at every turn.

  85. Scott

As much as barrelling over the catcher is a part of the game, so is kind-for-kind retaliation.

Bean someone in the back, get tossed, get it over with. It has to get done but it has to get done right.

  86. Scott

    Forgot to add:

This is not the Untouchables where Sean Connery tells Kevin Costner “He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue”. The game polices itself as long as it does not keep escalating.

Kind-for-kind retaliation. Do it and be done with it.

  87. CanIGetAMooseCall

It was a clean play. Unfortunate result, but a clean play. Stop crying.

  88. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti)

It was BUSH LEAGUE meets DIRTY, I’m thinking your not seeing this clear imagine what Molina and Jorge must be thinking.. so you mean to tell me you was going to attempt to barrel them over in a ST game ? you don’t see where this is not a clean play ! the BullS… excuse was he was trying to make an impression on the coach are you kidding me ! what player in ST makes a roster w/ a play at the plate nowadays, let alone in the AL !!!. It was cowardly and shameful and TB fans know it, we know , they know and I don’t want to hear nothing when we retaliate !

  89. kill.schill(ing)

    Maddon Needs a Killing

BTW, this is only going to degenerate because the Rays are actually going to be a good team this year. Count on them to win between 74-82 games.

Finally, we’ll have a reason to feel animosity for them.

  90. back bench

And the YES crew said they liked Maddon in Tampa because he was ‘a development’ manager. What’s he developing, storm troopers?

Even with all the rivalries, there is still an elegance and ritual to this sport. With two incidents in ST already, Maddon may well rue what he is sowing.

  92. filthy slider

Now you know why it took Joe Maddon so long to get a head coaching job in the majors. He plays as bush as you can. The Yanks should havew expected though, Crawford ran over the Astro catcher a few games back & Maddon said thats the way he wants his team to play, even in spring training.

  93. Guiseppe Franco

“WangFan at 21 he was our 3rd catcher making big impressions on Girardi, he loved him, most likely could have been a call up.”

Talk about a little over dramatic. Cervelli wasn’t getting a call-up until September when the rosters expand.

A broken wrist in March probably won’t derail those plans.

Hey, it sucks but it’s not the end of the world. The guy plays very good defense but he’s not a good hitter. The Yanks can find another one if need be.

I think people here are getting a little too loopy for their own good.

  96. randyhater

If runners aren’t supposed to take out catchers in Spring games then catchers shouldn’t block the plate. Both guys are trying to make impressions and both did what they’re supposed to do. It’s a shame our guy got hurt, but it’s a rough game.

That being said, Johnson needs to get one in the ribs the next time we see him. Just so the Rays know we’re paying attention.

  97. Upstate

We have a reasonable amount of money.

Here’s the scene….Rays at Yankee Stadium…late innings…Elliot Johnson steps into the batters box for the Rays…
Joe Girardi calls ‘time out’….walks out to the mound, says ‘great game’ to Farnsworth…waves to the bullpen for a righthander to enter the game….but no one saw anyone warming up in the bullpen….all is quiet…then a general buzz starts to circulate throught the Staduim….what’s Girardi up to ???

Out of the dugout…. after warming up in the underground batting cage with none other than the young and fully recovered Francisco Cervelli….. and striding to the mound with a new explosion of energy & determination….for one more inspired performance with a focus never seen before…

    …….number 22…..Roger Clemens.

Not good for one ‘Elliot Johnson’.

  98. Yazman

Well said, Murphydog. Unfortunate play, but I don’t believe there was any intent to injur.

If Betemit were tagged out at the plate because he avoided contact, we’d be killing his soft play.

But the Rays should step up and apologize for being overagressive.

  99. Ranting Guy

Interesting idea, Upstate .. have Cevelli come in to pitch to Johnson only.

Another scool of thought would be to retaliate against their catcher, whether it be next game or after the season stars.

Yet another school of thought would be to arbitrarily retaliate against someoene else’s catcher. How about Varitek just for the hell of it?

Vaitek: “Ouch. What was that for?”
Posada: “Elliot Johnson thumping Cervelli in March of course … now take your base, ya putz.”

Not a knock against Torre, but I wonder if things will be differet with the teams known for pitching NY batter high and tight in the past, now that there’s a new manager?

Whether retaliation is right or not is besides the point (it is an ‘unwritten rule’ even if it’s morally wrong) Girardi’s right in that you should expect a collision on that play in the regular season, but not in sping training.

  100. stuart

it is a fair play!!!!!!!!!!what are you talking about it is spring training!!!!!!!!

Maddon is a moron.. trying to instill the culture of winning blah blah blah, BS…

    Anti-mussina –

Were you one of those guys up in Cambridge the other day. Just shut up you idiot. You sound like “Psycho” in “Stripes” – “You touch my stuff, I’ll kill ya.”

Folks, this does point out that the Yanks lack a 3rd catcher to stash in AAA. Jason Brown – anybody seen him around? Or care to? Piliterre will be there, but I don’t think he’s ready. Nor likely was Cervelli – he hasn’t caught above A ball. Something that needs attention – there should be some options available at the end of spring, but it would have been nice to have someone in camp to work with our pitchers a little. This oversight, mild though it is, always threw me. Today just emphasizes it. We shouldn’t have to trade for a AAA catcher – they’re a dime a dozen in the offseason.

  107. nyyfaninlaaland

Interesting that Maddon was a catcher as well. Of course, he never made it out of the minors. Seems to me that Girardi might have a better sense of appropriate behavior here, but Maddon did bench coach for Sciosca, so he should have a clue as well. It’s likely that the 2 will speak – Maddon’s rep is that of a good guy. But a player might take this into his own hands – it should happen in spring, quickly and appropriately.

There won’t be any retaliation to Johnson during the season. He hit about .220 in AAA last year – he ain’t making the club. He’s desperately trying to hang on to a 40 man roster spot.

Yes, it was a cheap play. But the Yankees lost a Double-A catcher. There is no reason to go after one of their star players. Somebody will hit one of their guys and that will be that.

I’m amazed at how the internet makes tough guys out of cowards. Some of you should be embarrassed at what you wrote.

The last time I played baseball was in a game between Management and Sales at O’Neill Inc. in California.
We (sales) were behind 3 to zip. The Managements team had practiced for the game, and the shortstop had played semipro ball. I got on base and went from first to third on a softly hit ball to Left field. The shortstop cut off the throw in and I rounded third and thought “what the hell”. I challenged his arm and the catcher (director Europe) blocked the plate. I never even though about it. I took him out. The ball hit me in the back as we went down. We went on to Kick their butts. We all wore the crowns then given away at Burger King the the next days sales meeting. There are collisions in baseball no matter how low the level. It’s part of the game. and I’m sure everybody involved was running on instinct and not processing all the information.

    Pete – right on!

Johnson was playing aggressively, trying to win a job. Maybe not appropriate for ST, but well within his rights.

Cervelli suffered a broken bone in his wrist. Not career-threatening. He would not have made the big club out of ST anyway.

“Johnson showed no remorse”. Huh? He said he was sorry Cervelli was hurt. That’s enough for me.

Retribution? There should be some, certainly. Enough to pay the Rays back, but not enough to encite things. Next time we play, Johnson gets one in the a$$. If he isn’t playing, then their catcher does. No problem, case closed. NO ONE else should get injured. That would be bush league, and we are above that sort of behaviour.

this is such BS, im as big a yankee fan as there is but the kid had did nothing wrong! he’s trying to make the team and cervelli was blocking the plate. i love girardi but he’s out of line here.
if he doesnt want collisions in ST he should have told his catchers not to block the plate.

  113. Kill-Schill(ing)

Hey, I was just having a little fun. I can’t speak for anyone else.

“Violence is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. The old law of an eye for an eye leaves everybody blind. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding; it seeks to annihilate rather than to convert.”

Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys a community and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Violence ends by defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers.” —MLK

This is my first post here and I ‘m sorry I have to thoroughly disagree with Peter.

Sorry, Peter, but that’s a bush league play in ST and I do not understand your mentality of “oh, it’s just Cervelli, a minor leaguer). The poor kid’s career could be at stake (how do you know he’s going to recover from this? It’s obviously a bad fracture) and it is, at the very least, severely derailed. You sound like Joe Maddon……not a good thing.

  115. Ant928

I can agree that it’s a hit and these things happen but my biggest problems are with Maddon and some of the people here. As an ex-catcher YES I got hit (still feeling some in my 30’s). Johnson was trying to make the team but looking at the play it’s something that shouldn’t have been done in ST. But there are instincts and these things happen.

Maddon come off looking like an idiot for seeming uncaring and then his comments about talking politics and i-Pods with Joe G.

My other problem is with the people here saying “Cervelli shouldn’t have blocked the plate”. Uhh, excuse me…the reason people don’t block any other base is because home is the only one that you SCORE AT!!! When I was learning to catch my coaches pushed the concept of “My House”. What was basically told is you (the catcher) are going to be invaded/broken into…protect it as such. Yes the runner has possession of the base path but the catcher has possession of that base and ANY catcher who doesn’t protect it as “his house” WILL NOT make it to the majors.

Bottom line it was uncalled for in ST and Maddon looks like a a**. Just my opinion…but unlike some of the other people who posted that Cervelli was wrong…I at least played the position for six years.

Just standing up for my fellow backstops! :)

Am I the only one who finds it hysterically funny when someone named “Kill Schill(ing) states “violence is impractical because it a descending spiral…”

    LOL! :)

Why NOT ? Does the TRUTH HURT ? All the DIRT is going to come out in the wash! KEEP WATCHING THE HEADLINES FOLKS!!!I am not computer oriented as yet & may have spam ousted any POSITIVE &/OR NEGATIVE RESPONSES in error by only checking my in box e-mails since my last comment about 2 weeks ago.If possible,I would love getting an answer from ROGER CLEMENS,just to solidify my own reasonings.
