Quote of the day: Shelley Duncan

Shelley Duncan was asked today what would happen if a Tampa Bay catcher were blocking the plate on Wednesday.
“I don’t know,†he said. “That will be determined between third and home.â€
Joe Girardi said again, however, that he has told his players and will tell them again not to run over catchers in spring training. “I don’t want anybody getting hurt,” he said.

watch out rays
Oooo. Cryptic smack talk from Paul Bunyan. Anyone keeping track of quote of the days? That’s at least 2 for Shelley so far.
I heard an interview with the guy who crashed into Cervelli and he said that he wasn’t the type of player to do what he had just done (?) and then he went on to say something amorphous about Shelley being in the Yankee dugout, hinting that he thought Shelley would do something like that. Which I thought was pretty obnoxious because this guy DID slide into our catcher. This quote aside, are there any instances of Shelley doing it that anyone here knows about.
I also want to add that Bernie Castro had a beautiful slide at the plate yesterday. He artfully scored when the ball got there before him AND he managed to avoid maiming Tampa’s catcher.
Frankly, I really don’t want the Yankees to do anything stupid to retaliate. I’d rather see them do something smart, like score tons of runs against them. Perhaps during the regular season, Phil could pitch a perfect game against them. That’d show them who the superior team is.
Don’t make Shelley Duncan mad, or somebody’s gonna get in BIG, BIG trouble.
The Yankees will just get the job done on the field against the Rays. No need to retaliate and allow the Commish to step in. Who knows what Bud would do at that point.
GO GET’EM SHELLEY !!!
Actually Shelley, said the right thing. Sort of. What he said that nothing will be premeditated, but he did not say that he would follow Girardi’s pre-spring training mandate.
the Rays’ catcher won’t be looking at forearms the same after Wednesday
Hughes, Joba and Kennedy going to be on Mike’d Up tonight.
thanks Jax I will be watching that
Shelly will listen to Joe if he plans on making the trip north. IMO I think he prefers taking out second basemen and his teamates forearms anyways.
I’m getting in on this late since I spent the weekend watching my nephew plays his games in South Florida.
It was a bush league play. I don’t care about Cervelli blocking the plate or any of that nonsense. Its a spring training game. You don’t run over a catcher in a spring training game.
That kid is going to be out 2-3 months over a bush league play by a guy who has no chance to make their roster. Doesn’t seem real fair to me.
Its the second time the Rays did it this week. Carl Crawford did it against the Twins the other day.
I get the fact that Maddon believes these games matter because he his trying to instill a winning attitude with his team.
But, they DON’T matter. The #1 goal in ST games is to not hurt anybody.
If that’s the way he is going about instilling a winning attitude, then some of his guys are going to pay the price by getting drilled in retailation. As long as Maddon and his players are ok with that, they can run over all the catchers he wants in spring training.
They made their “big” stand. Next week, its time for the Yankees to make their stand on this matter.
Crawford, Upton, Longoria, you drill these guys and see what they want to do. If they want to fight, the pitches come closer to the head next time they bat.
If they don’t, Crawford takes the hit for the team in the middle of the back and you move on.
At some point, you either send a message or be happy getting your players hurt.
Girardi sent a message yesterday. Now, he has to finish this week by drilling their guys. Whining about it isn’t enough. He has to have one of pitchers nail Crawford. Preferably, Farnsworth.
Then we get a chance to see how far Maddon wants to take this thing.
My guess is, it will stop as soon as one of his players gets nailed.
I know there aren’t that many hockey fans but Rangers and Bruins playing a classic 0 – 0 game, very exciting one too.
Shelley Duncan would go to war for any teammate with the possible exception of the seldom seen guy that wears No. 45.
“I know there aren’t that many hockey fans”
This statement is not only true on this blog, but also kind of a universal truth. At least in the States:-)
Dude, guys, I’m going to Italy!
*ahem*
Shelley is the man.
congrats Rebecca !
“Dude, guys, I’m going to Italy!”
My folks are leaving on a trip over there today:-)
They’ve never been outside of north america, so it should be cool for them.
How long are you going for? And where?
Joe Maddon’s best advice to his team should be, “Watch your backs. And oh, watch your fronts also. Chin music should be seen and not heard “.
Congrats Rebecca. Italy is great and a really good learning experience.
As far as Maddon, I say wait till the season and plunk their best guy. Then see what happens. Farnsy is the one to do it, although that 100 mph heat from Joba is pretty tempting
Brandon and KD: Thanks. I’m taking my brother–he’s never been to Europe before and he loooooovvveeees Italian food. I went last year while I was studying abroad and had an amazing time. Staying at some nicer hotels this time (My mom’s attitude is that it’s either a five star, or a dump).
Whozat: Rome and Florence with day trips to Pisa and Bologna.
HENRIK !!!!
i’d love to go to italy. i think i was way too young (and sick with a fever) to enjoy it as much as i should have the first time.
sj44 “The #1 goal in ST games is to not hurt anybody”
that’s the #1 rule for guys who’ve already made the team. the #1 job for a guy trying to make the roster is to make the roster and thats what the guy was doing. sure girardi said it was wrong, but zim whos been in the game 50+ yrs said the opposite.
if joe wants no collisions, tell the catchers not to block the plate, then the runner will just slide.
all of you people thinking about who’s gonna retaliate against whom should calculate the damage done if the retaliation winds up with arod’s hand being broken buy a pitch as the payback.
do you really think zim is going to go against what the manager of the team is telling the media?
Sorry, I disagree. First off, Zim isn’t going against his manager publicly. Its not surprising where he falls on this. He works for the Rays.
Second the player in question isn’t going to make the team. Plus, it doesn’t matter if he is or isn’t. Its just not a play that’s made in spring training.
Teams talk about this all the time in the spring. I don’t know of a team, other than Joe Maddon yesterday, who actually condones that kind of play in spring training.
You just don’t do it. They did it, now its time for payback.
You can’t worry about your own guys getting hurt during payback. If you do, then you are just a punching bag and the rest of the league will take advantage of it.
Need proof? The last 6 years, the Red Sox have made Yankee hitters target practice. All the while, it went unretailated by Yankee pitchers.
Mainly, because Torre didn’t want to make waves.
It took a 21 year old kid to throw a couple of 99 MPH heaters over Youkilis’ head to put an end to it.
How many Yankee hitters got drilled by Red Sox pitchers after Joba threw those pitches? I believe the number is zero.
Two wild pitches stopped 6 years of target practice and it took a kid to do it.
If the Rays want to play blood and guts baseball, that’s their right.
Its also the Yankees right to do something about it.
Hopefully, that something occurs on Wednesday.
SJ44, Elliot Johnson was not trying to intentionally hurt Cervelli, yet you are foaming at the mouth to intentionally harm a Rays player. Do you realize that their could be repercussions against the Yankees by MLB especially going after a star Rays player? The fact that you are so intent about intentionally injuring a Rays player (especially after Cervelli said that the collision at home was part of the game) shows that you may have some extraordinary anger issues. The way to handle this situation is to go hard at the Rays catcher if the situation presents itself, but only if the Rays catcher is fully blocking the plate before the ball arrives like Cervelli did. I don’t like the whole running into the catcher thing anyway, but I think the best way to prevent it is if the runner would automatically be ruled safe if the catcher blocks the plate before the ball arrives.
congratulations rebecca, have a wonderful time!
SJ-Well Said!
SJ44: Tell it – every time the differential between Red Sox hitting Yankees and vice versa has been shown, it’s been huge. Red Sox pitchers (and pitchers for other teams) have been able to do so secure in the knowledge that, for the most part, Yankee pitchers will not retaliate. Notwithstanding Roger Clemens’ other issues, it was good having someone who didn’t hesitate to protect his teammates (e.g., against Toronto last season). And whatever the reason for Joba’s two wild pitches against Kevin Youkalis, it’s revealing that the Red Sox stopped hitting Yankees after that. You don’t have to be a proponent of beanball wars to believe that this has been long overdue. Target practice is OVER . . .
Ron – I think there is a difference between “intentionally harm[ing]” a Rays player and plunking one in the middle of the back. It sounds like SJ is recommending the plunk, which will hurt, but won’t run the risk of having someone out of the game for 10 flipping weeks. It can be done just like Joba did, by throwing over the head, which sure won’t hurt any one. It doesn’t sound like SJ is recommending an eye for an eye here (or a wrist for a wrist); just a little chin music to avoid the Yankees from turning into the punching bag for a team they play 19 times a year.
Although I don’t want anyone to get hurt, I can understand a young kid trying to make it in the big leagues. This is his shot. You have to go all out. Nobidy wants to see an injury but that is part of the game. I disagree with Joe.
