Although I don't want anyone to get hurt, I can understand a young kid trying to make it in the big leagues. This is his shot. You have to go all out. Nobidy wants to see an injury but that is part of the game. I disagree with Joe.

Ron - I think there is a difference between "intentionally harm[ing]" a Rays player and plunking one in the middle of the back. It sounds like SJ is recommending the plunk, which will hurt, but won't run the risk of having someone out of the game for 10 flipping weeks. It can be done just like Joba did, by throwing over the head, which sure won't hurt any one. It doesn't sound like SJ is recommending an eye for an eye here (or a wrist for a wrist); just a little chin music to avoid the Yankees from turning into the punching bag for a team they play 19 times a year.

SJ44: Tell it - every time the differential between Red Sox hitting Yankees and vice versa has been shown, it's been huge. Red Sox pitchers (and pitchers for other teams) have been able to do so secure in the knowledge that, for the most part, Yankee pitchers will not retaliate. Notwithstanding Roger Clemens' other issues, it was good having someone who didn't hesitate to protect his teammates (e.g., against Toronto last season). And whatever the reason for Joba's two wild pitches against Kevin Youkalis, it's revealing that the Red Sox stopped hitting Yankees after that. You don't have to be a proponent of beanball wars to believe that this has been long overdue. Target practice is OVER . . .

SJ44, Elliot Johnson was not trying to intentionally hurt Cervelli, yet you are foaming at the mouth to intentionally harm a Rays player. Do you realize that their could be repercussions against the Yankees by MLB especially going after a star Rays player? The fact that you are so intent about intentionally injuring a Rays player (especially after Cervelli said that the collision at home was part of the game) shows that you may have some extraordinary anger issues. The way to handle this situation is to go hard at the Rays catcher if the situation presents itself, but only if the Rays catcher is fully blocking the plate before the ball arrives like Cervelli did. I don't like the whole running into the catcher thing anyway, but I think the best way to prevent it is if the runner would automatically be ruled safe if the catcher blocks the plate before the ball arrives.

Sorry, I disagree. First off, Zim isn't going against his manager publicly. Its not surprising where he falls on this. He works for the Rays.

Second the player in question isn't going to make the team. Plus, it doesn't matter if he is or isn't. Its just not a play that's made in spring training.

Teams talk about this all the time in the spring. I don't know of a team, other than Joe Maddon yesterday, who actually condones that kind of play in spring training.

You just don't do it. They did it, now its time for payback.

You can't worry about your own guys getting hurt during payback. If you do, then you are just a punching bag and the rest of the league will take advantage of it.

Need proof? The last 6 years, the Red Sox have made Yankee hitters target practice. All the while, it went unretailated by Yankee pitchers.

Mainly, because Torre didn't want to make waves.

It took a 21 year old kid to throw a couple of 99 MPH heaters over Youkilis' head to put an end to it.

How many Yankee hitters got drilled by Red Sox pitchers after Joba threw those pitches? I believe the number is zero.

Two wild pitches stopped 6 years of target practice and it took a kid to do it.

If the Rays want to play blood and guts baseball, that's their right.

Its also the Yankees right to do something about it.

Hopefully, that something occurs on Wednesday.

sj44 "The #1 goal in ST games is to not hurt anybody"

that's the #1 rule for guys who've already made the team. the #1 job for a guy trying to make the roster is to make the roster and thats what the guy was doing. sure girardi said it was wrong, but zim whos been in the game 50+ yrs said the opposite.

if joe wants no collisions, tell the catchers not to block the plate, then the runner will just slide.

all of you people thinking about who's gonna retaliate against whom should calculate the damage done if the retaliation winds up with arod's hand being broken buy a pitch as the payback.
