That Phil Hughes is a tremendous young man and we wish him all the best

Peter Abraham

In the latest entry on his entertaining blog, Phil Hughes asked for suggestions about what type of posts he should do. He ended with this:

“I’ll continue with the contests and everything else but if there is something specific let me know. I’ve heard a couple people mention post-game write ups but I think our beat writers do a fantastic job with that. “

I know who I’m voting for for Cy Young this season.

No matter how he fares and how the non-trade winds up being judged as time goes on, Phil is a lot of fun to root for and watch.

  2. Yazman

    Well said, Phil.

  3. Ralph

Between your and Phil’s blog there is no reason to go to any other sites. You both do a great job of going beyond what is necessary to give to us fans and I think I can speak for all of us when I say we are very grateful.

  4. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti)

is it bad to have a man crush on a 21 yr. old SP

  5. ~Adam.

    Phil Hughes for President!!!!

  6. hughesian bias

HAHAH that must have been a shout-out to you, pete. phil is the greatest, and that’s not even counting his skills on the mound!

  7. mel

    Brandon,

    As long as it’s a man-crush. haha!

  8. mel

If the person who suggested that Phil do recaps is here, please don’t be offended when I say that they probably have other things going on after games.

They also probably want to avoid the Schilling-method of blogging. lol.

Although, going home and updating your blog is a good way to stay out of trouble and Cashman’s doghouse. :)

Can anybody name another player that has Phil’s talent, is a great human being, and makes himself so accessible to fans?

    Didn’t think so. ;)

  10. David

Got your cy young vote, huh Pete? Any chance he has a bonus tied to his contract that if he gets one cy young vote, he gets a huge bonus? We know what congress will be doing after the cy voting comes out next year :)

  11. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Wolf, you send him that mock up yet?

  12. JoeT YANKEES - fan of the anti-anti

and that’s exactly why he wrote it pete!!

haha j/k of course – u guys do great!

  13. Wolf In Pinstripes

Rebecca – I sent it to him a week ago and posted it in his blog comments the same day. I’m sure he has a ton of email and most likely hasn’t seen it. jennifer linked it again at Phil’s tonight (thanks, jen!) and I posted another comment about it.

Thanks to you and everyone else for the reminders though. ;)

I’m from Puerto Rico so Roberto Clemente comes to mind, but the fact that I had to go there speaks volumes about Phil.

  15. mel

    Joe T,

Why that would be unethical. Of course, Phil doesn’t have any Cy Young vote provisions in his contract!

  16. gdamac (formerly Grant)

Ahh, he’s just trying to make it so you guys throw him soft ball questions.

  17. whoa

    /self-promoting plug.

    j/k

  18. Clutch Is Everything

Phil is the new Gilbert Arenas

  19. Wolf In Pinstripes

Mike R – You’re dead on with Clemente, although I was thinking about current athletes. And you’re right – the fact that such a comparison had to be made does indeed say a lot about Phil.

  20. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

From what I’ve read, Clemente was a saint.

  21. JBRO

    Dare I say Curt Shilling…

Sure we hate him but the sox fans feel the same about him…

  22. saucY

    Pete,

Give Schilling a vote. Make the Sox pay!

  23. Ralph

Brandon, I think a lot of us are dealing with that particular man crush. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

  24. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

I don’t have a man crush on him.

I just plain have a crush on him. Though I think that’s actually really obvious.

  25. Nate

    Phil blogs for the fans.

    Shilling blogs for Curt.

  26. Erik

    @Brandon — If it’s wrong, I don’t want to be right. XD

  27. MikeEff - Shelley at First

i heard a guy say he’d drink hughes bath water…

i’m not sure he was kidding …

  28. Dan

I know Schilling annoys all of us, and I am certainly no Red Sox fan, but because I live in the Philly area, I know about all of the great things Schilling has done for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). He is a tireless and dedicated fundraiser for the movement to find a cure to this dreaful disease. I am all too aware of this disease and Schilling’s heroic contributions because my father died of ALS.

  29. Whitey Fraud

I think Phil ought to interview Peter.

  30. Doreen

You just have to love Phil Hughes!

  31. Yanksrule57

What’s not to like about Phil?
Fan friendly, super talented, and not afraid to say something with a little substance (Cough, Jeter, Cough).
If he has some success on the field this year, watch how quick he starts getting offers and doing commercials. He will be a media star.

  32. whozat

“I think Phil ought to interview Peter.”

If the questions were clever, that could actually be totally hi-larious.

  33. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    Mel,

someone suggested that he take a little time (you know he has it) before the game and post something. I along with everyone else ripped them a new one.

  34. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    wolf no problem :D

  35. yeah!!!

Oh! so being a nice person gives you cy young votes???… not saying phil hughes is not a great pitcher but if he has bad year dont tell your giving him votes because he is a great person???……oh now I know why those detroit writers didn’t give Alex those two votes last year… come on pete stop the stupidity.

  36. Ivy

Can anybody name another player that has Phil’s talent, is a great human being, and makes himself so accessible to fans?

Well, you can string me up, but I think Curtis Granderson is not a bad comparison.
