Pettitte will skip today’s start

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc, Podcast on Mar 12, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Andy Pettitte has what the Yankees are describing as mild tendinitis outside his elbow and will not start today.

Pettitte, Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman all say that the lefty will make his next start and will be ready for the regular season.

Back in a few minutes with some quotes and audio.

UPDATE, 11:20 a.m.: Pettitte felt the pain during his bullpen session on Sunday. Girardi didn’t know about it until yesterday, an indication of how minor it is. Pettitte wanted to pitch today but was overruled. “Y’all know how it is,” he said. “They’re extremely cautious here.”

UPDATE, 11:30 a.m.: Here is some audio of Andy Pettitte talking to the beat writers about his injury:

  4. Moshe Mandel March 12th, 2008 at 11:14 am

This is Moshe Mandel from MVN’s The Bronx Block. We are starting a “Name The Three Kids” contest this afternoon. The prizes are a Yankees DVD set and the Yankees Century book. Here is the link. http://mvn.com/mlb-yankees/200.....s-tickets/

  5. Sean McNally March 12th, 2008 at 11:19 am

Is this possibly so that a member of the Scranton Yankees can mete out some Girardi-style justice against the Tampa Rays, rather than the Durham Bulls?

Tendinitis just being, like communism, a red herring.

  6. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge March 12th, 2008 at 11:26 am

I’ll still be nervous about it till he makes his next start.

  7. mel March 12th, 2008 at 11:28 am

Who gets the call? Karstens would be the spot starter, and they sent some kids down already. Pete?

  8. mel March 12th, 2008 at 11:29 am

    Jennifer,

He’s mad about it. He knows his body so that’s a good sign. But yes, it’s best to be cautious and I’ll be just as nervous.

  9. JGNYC March 12th, 2008 at 11:30 am

    Karstens time???

  10. Cliff March 12th, 2008 at 11:32 am

if this happened in season would joba get the call?

  11. Patrick March 12th, 2008 at 11:40 am

Sean McNally, Clue is a great movie.

  12. Bob Merc-The Shift March 12th, 2008 at 11:44 am

Damn birds in the backround on the Pettitte clip…where is Tripp Isenhour when ya need em?…LOL Best to rest the arm I guess…when I hear the word “elbow” it scares me.

  13. saucY March 12th, 2008 at 11:44 am

whoa, my the IT folks at my job decided to block phil’s blog

    :(

guess i’m not the only one visiting that site

  14. Bob Merc-The Shift March 12th, 2008 at 11:47 am

I forgot….Tripp Isenhour’s personalized golf bag is on sale on E-Bay…somebody removed it from his garbage. Happy bidding!!!

  15. mel March 12th, 2008 at 11:49 am

    saucY,

So are you saying you’re the only one visiting this site? I find that hard to believe. Or is this one Big Brother-approved?

  16. whozat March 12th, 2008 at 11:51 am

    “like communism, a red herring.”

    God, I love that movie.

Is it Rasner who’s been paired with Andy this spring? Igawa? I can’t remember.

    Joba/Ian
    Moose/Karstens
    Phil/Igawa?
    Andy/??
    Wang/??

I forget, because I’m a stoner. And by “a stoner”, I mean “tired”.

  17. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge March 12th, 2008 at 11:52 am

I tend not to believe the team regarding injuries. They tend down play them. And then I hear elbow and Andy in the same sentence, it scares me. When Andy is on the mound next week and gets thru it I’ll feel a lot better.

  18. saucY March 12th, 2008 at 11:55 am

mel, i had a type-o. i meant that they blocked the site, so i’m assuming others in the company have been visiting it as well.

weird because they don’t block much here.

  19. saucY March 12th, 2008 at 11:57 am

i misread your post as well. you’re right. i’d have assumed this would have been blocked first, if anything…

  20. mel March 12th, 2008 at 11:59 am

    saucY,

True, especially if your company is really anti-drug!

  21. Yanksrule57 March 12th, 2008 at 11:59 am

    (Scooby-Do voice) RUT-RO!

  22. gayle March 12th, 2008 at 12:00 pm

Oh lordy Joel Sherman is back in Yankees camp.he really doesnt know when to stop asking the same question 5 different ways.

I can already tell you his column tomorrow will be on Andy and how much is expected of him because of the innings limits of the kids and how there is so much pressure on him to stay healthy and pitch well.

  23. mel March 12th, 2008 at 12:02 pm

Big blow to the Jays. Their primary setup man from last season Casey Janssen to have season-ending surgery. He was battling Jesse Litsch for the 5th spot this spring.

  24. mel March 12th, 2008 at 12:03 pm

    gayle,

Was that Sherman in the audio asking about pressure on him because the kids are on IP limits?

  25. Andrea - anti-anti March 12th, 2008 at 12:03 pm

saucy: they may just be blocking all wordpress sites…

  26. saucY March 12th, 2008 at 12:03 pm

they probably are anti-drug… at least anti-non-prescription-drug (health insurance co.)

  27. Yazman March 12th, 2008 at 12:06 pm

Moshe, thanks for posting about the contest.

My entry suggests the Yankees have a new “Tri Young”

  28. JGNYC March 12th, 2008 at 12:07 pm

    Rasner just pitched yesterday…

  29. Sara March 12th, 2008 at 12:08 pm

    whozat…rasner pitched yesterday

  30. Dee March 12th, 2008 at 12:09 pm

To all the people who have been calling for Moose’s retirement, this is another reason why he shouldn’t. Pitchers get injured, just as players in other positions do. Having six pitchers ready to start is not too many.

  31. gayle March 12th, 2008 at 12:10 pm

    Mel

yes that was him I believe so he asked that question and before that basically asked the same question a different way

  32. JGNYC March 12th, 2008 at 12:13 pm

Igawa mirrored Hughes on Sunday, throwing 2 innings and walking 3. Karstens mirrored Mussina on Saturday, throwing 2 innings (3 hits, 1 walk).

  33. JGNYC March 12th, 2008 at 12:15 pm

Karstens on 3 days rest makes sense. In the regular season, he’s the guy who will need to be the most felxible, if he’s the long reliever in the pen.

  34. JGNYC March 12th, 2008 at 12:17 pm

Karstens mirrored Moose on Saturday, Igawa mirrored Hughes on Sunday. Both threw 2 innings.

  35. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti) March 12th, 2008 at 12:17 pm

Ralph Kiner and Keith Hernandez both don’t agree w/ what Maddon had Crawford and Johnson do. Sal Fasano brought a good point what happens if he takes out the runner instead of getting the out and Johnson gets hurt is he the bad guy ?

Jay Gibbons also doesn’t agree w/ running into catchers in ST

  36. Jake March 12th, 2008 at 12:17 pm

    Pete,

I have to agree with you the Chamberlain front. They’re are too many questions in the Yankees rotation right now and having a surplus of starters will benefit the team tremendously.

I can understand using Kennedy in long relief, but Joba is being wasted as the setup man, regardless of how good he is at it.

Now look what is going on with Pettitte…who knows whether this will turn into something worse…better to be prepared for as much than to assume it is ok.

  37. CB March 12th, 2008 at 12:23 pm

Janssen loss is a real blow to the Jays. They were really counting on him to solidify the back end of the rotation. If they now need to move Litsch to the five spot that really weakens the pen. Maybe that was the motivation for Benitez?

Janssen’s not only going to miss the season – he has a torn labrum – that’s a potentially career ending injury.

The Jays have a lot of pitching talent – but they’ve taken the opposite approach from the yankees in developing those arms in some ways.

While people have criticized the yankees for being too cautious with the young arms, I think toronto has pushed them too hard, especially with their work loads in the minors.

In 2005 Janssen threw 50 minor league innings at the age of 22. The next year he threw 148 innings!

Now I don’t know what his workloads were like in college but the Jays literally increased his innings pitched between two years by over 300%.

That is a recipe for a disaster. This is exactly what the yankees are avoiding at all costs (also this is why Joba needs to be in the rotation for the part of this year – otherwise he’ll never extend himself to 150 IP)

And the Jays have done something very similar with Dustin McGowan and Jesse Litsch. What they did with McGowan in particular is especially bad because he has so much talent. Gustavo Chacin has also already had serious elbow injuries for which he’s missed large chunks of time.

I get the sense that Toronto wanted to start getting returns on their investment in these young pitchers sooner rather than later and in the end made them throw too man innings too quickly.

It’s great on the part of the jays to say we’re going to build internally and avoid the free agent market but if you do so by trying to rush young arms through the system to make up for the void it’s going to come back to hurt you – can’t think long term and short term like that at once.

Yesterday mike and the mad dog grilled cashman about “babying” the young arms saying these innings limits were ridiculous.

Tell that to the Blue Jays young pitchers.
You need a transition and that’s what the yankeees have been doing.

    CB,,

Agreed re: Janssen. He was durable and had great stuff. Very tough on the Yankees for stretches of last year.

From the last thread re: Brackman.

My nephew faced both Price and Brackman last year. Hit 2 doubles off Price and said he was very, very good.

    Brackman? Downright nasty.

First off, he felt like he was two feet away from him by the time the ball left his hand. He’s a righthanded hitter and that’s what it felt like to have a guy Brackman’s size throwing to him.

He was “only” throwing 94 that day because, as Brackman told him after the game, his elbow was hurting him.

As good as his fastball was, his curveball was even better. Struck him out on the curve the first time up and he swore the ball was going to hit him before it broke. That’s how nasty it was.

Got a single the second time up on a fastball Brackman left out over the plate. Third time up, he popped out on another good curveball.

He said that Brackman was the best pitcher he faced all last year. Couldn’t believe, injury or not, he fell to the Yankees.

Oh, and in addition, I need to sign up my 12 year old:

    - Her room: Yankee stadium mural (4 feet x 6 feet) over her bed; signed Jeter “the Dive”; signed Joba lithograph; signed YES network announcers baseball; multiple bobbleheard, bulletin board covered with newspaper clippings about the Yankees; Yankee comforter and pillow throw; Yankee throw blanket; Yankee sheets; Yankee bean bag and a life size Jeter cardboard cut out(get the picture)
    - 12 Yankee hats in assorted colors
    - 12 (at last count) Yankee jerseys and t-shirts
    - knew the line up, their back up and how each was doing by the time she was 9
    - once the season starts, will not watch any other network other than YES
    - checks out yankees.com every morning before school and after
    - threatened not to go to camp this year in case we were able to get All Star tickets

    I’ve raised her well! :)

    3. Yankee History of team uniform picture on wall-check
    4. Multiple articles of Yankee clothing-check
    5. MLB Season Ticket Package (I only watch YES and Yankee road games)-check
    6. Subscription to Yankee Magazine-check
    7. Attending ST and RS games-check
    8. Passed addiction on to offspring-check

    Yup, I think I have a problem…

  69. Vivianna March 12th, 2008 at 2:17 pm

OK, besides the typical stuff – clothes, hats, 2 pairs of yankee sneakers, go to ST and regular season games, I do the cell phone thing, take the day off work opening day, and days off during the postseason…. here’s what I spent the morning doing?

I used a number system to rank betemit, ensberg, woodward and gonzalez including Fielding and batting statistics from spring train…that result–no freaking new insight…gonzalez has no shot and the others are still neck and neck…except that Betemit and ensberg are more versatile than woodward (unless you count his outfield time, which was minimal)

I also back tracked and figured some pitchers for today since no one had it posted: giese, henn, britton , ohlendorf, patterson
