Taught to break up double plays... It was a stupid play by Shelly. Just causing trouble like the punk he is.

I love it that they are trying to rationalize this as hard ball, just like the Rays did with their home plate roughness. I think a fractured wrist and cleats in someones buttox is about even :)

Cmon, Pete

"But sliding at somebody with your spikes at their throat is not the most professonal thing in the world."

The lower leg is nowhere near the throat.

"What does Iwamura have to do with this?"

When there is bad blood, the infielders are the most vulnerable.

The infielders used to solve that problem by tagging the runner up by his teeth next time he slid into the base.

Jon,

I don't think it's mindboggling at all. If you prescribe to the idea that you play ST a little differently than you do a regular game, then it makes perfect sense.

If you believe that you play all games with the same intensity and give 100% every time you step on the field, then sure.

But don't act like it's a widespread, majority opinion among teams that ST is to be played as physically as a regular season game.

p.s. I personally don't like the Duncan play but "it is what it is". I would have preferred plunking one TB guy and leaving it at that. Typically you retaliate with a pitcher hitting an opposing hitter in an area where he'll feel it but won't be seriously hurt.
