Girardi: Roster won’t be shuffled

Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman said the suspensions would not influence how they select the roster. Melkay Cabrera and Shelley Duncan will just sit it out and the Yankees will play three games with 23 players. That’s a two-man bench.

“It is what it is and you move on,” Girardi said. “We’ll still start the season with who we were going to start the season with. There’s still competition, there’s still two weeks of spring training. … Obviously we’re hurt missing two guys for three games. You got to deal with that.”

Girardi said he had no idea why Cabrera was suspended. “I don’t know (what he did),” he said.

Meanwhile, it started raining again in the 10th inning. It goes down as a 7-7 tie.

If no one has any clue what Melky did including Melky I am sure they will appeal and someone (MLB) will have to show something as to why he was suspended.More than just the word of the Tampa Rays.

Lets see where this one goes.

Duncan IMHO should not appeal just be deonw with it. Melky as I have said I just dont get how this came out of the blue.

7-7 tie. Gotta love spring training.

I agree with Joe G., just deal with it and move on; if it was a turned ankle requiring a couple of days, no one would notice.

It will give us some insight if they appeal Melky’s suspension. If they truly don’t know why Melky was suspended, they might appeal it.

After watching both Duncan’s and Johnson’s slides from multiple angles on Youtube I’m convinced more than ever that Johnson’s slide was MUCH worse than Duncan’s slide.

Johnson barrels head/helmet first into Cervelli who isn’t even blocking the plate and breaks Cervelli’s wrist. It was totally an unnecessary play and if Johnson tries a regular slide he would have been safe by a mile.

Duncan slides into 2nd base with his knee bent mind you and barely scrapes Iwamura’s leg. Now if Duncan’s leg had been outstretched at the point of contact then I wouldn’t feel this way. However Duncan wasn’t trying to hurt Iwamura. If he wanted to seriously hurt him he definitely could have.

Johnson on the other hand went full-bore into Cervelli for no reason at all.

I thought that when a team had multiple suspensions they could be served consecutively rather than concurrently. Not sure that’s always the case, but I know it has happened that way. Any input form anyone here?

Now this decision I disagree with. I don’t see why they don’t let Brett Gardner play, I certainly don’t think that the experience would *hurt* him, if anything the kid may pleasantly surprise you. But whatever, we’ll only have this short handed roster when we’re facing the Blue Jays, a team against whom pitching is really more important than hitting anyway.

No one seems to know what Melky, Meecham or Long did. Maybe if Melky ran accross the field to tackle someone, he only would have been hit with 2 games. With this and the Mitchell Report, it is clear NY is in the crosshairs this year.

I love having Duncan as the enforcer. Every team [at least in the AL] knows that if they mess with anyone, the Yankees, led by this giant, corn-fed maniac, are going to respond in a big way. Remember when the Orioles would instantly send four guys to keep Strawberry under control and he would still find a way to punch somebody?

This situation highlights something than needs to be addressed. Umpires no longer allow the proper amount of gamesmanship that has effectively kept players in check for years. This whole garbage about warning both sides after one batter is hit. ONE BATTER. And I can’t believe the Yankees pitcher was thrown out for grazing the guy in the first inning of that game. If he hadn’t been thrown out, the pitcher would have appropriately hit a batter later and the issue would be over. No problems. Umpires are out of control.

    I love this game.

    “Corn-fed maniac”…”Duncan the enforcer”…classic!

Translation: I am loving this too. Shelley for Prez!!!

You can see the video of Melky’s “punch” here. Total bs. He did not throw a punch at anyone. If what Melky did gets 3 games, everyone on both teams should get 3 games.

UPDATE- Here’s a video of the incident from ESPN. If you skip through and watch the clip at 3:11, you can definitely see Melky (#28) running in and throwing an arm in there. The Melk Man Cometh.
